It is South Australian Derby Day on Saturday afternoon at Morphettville, where a capacity field of 16 three-year-olds have accepted for the Group 1 staying event over 2500m. Accompanied by the Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes and some big fields throughout the day, we are set fair for a competitive day of racing throughout. The track should be in the Good 4 range with a perfect day on the weather front expected, while the rail comes out 3m the entire circuit and racing commences at 11:37am ACST.

SA Sires Produce Stakes Top Tip: Harley’n’rose

The Group 3 SA Sires Produce Stakes may lack in quality compared to recent years, but it looks a perfect race for Harley’n’rose to bounce back in. The two-year-old gelded son of Holler managed to finish a length off Treasurway in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes last time out when forced to come from the rear (albeit in a small field) in an on-pace dominated affair. The run suggested that 1400m fourth-up in a second campaign would be ideal and from barrier three under Todd Pannell will be given every conceivable hope to see out the trip at the first time of asking. He has chased home some nice horses so far this campaign and we expect Harley’n’rose to get his moment on Saturday in Group 3 company.

Best Bet at Morphettville: Platinum Wolf

The Kristi Evans-trained Platinum Wolf has won three of his last four starts, including two of his three runs this time in and we expect he will keep that form going on Saturday. The Puissance de Lune gelding won convincingly in a similar race to this at Murray Bridge on May 3 and we expect he will prove too good for his rivals once again. Teagan Voorham has a superb record aboard this bloke winning twice from as many rides and despite drawing barrier 11, we are confident he can absorb the speed in the race and flash home down the heart of the track with just 55kg on his back.

Best Bet

Race 3 – Silk #4 Platinum Wolf (11)

4yo Gelding | T: Kristi Evans | J: Teagan Voorham (55kg)

Next Best at Morphettville: Party Princess

We were with Party Princess in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks a fortnight ago where she finished eighth and we expect she will bounce back to form in Saturday’s Listed Port Adelaide Guineas. The three-year-old filly was ridden much closer to the speed than usual and simply didn’t go on with it, despite seemingly having plenty to offer approaching the home turn. From barrier 13 on Saturday, look for Jason Holder to have the So You Think filly settled back to towards the rear as per normal. With a blistering turn of foot on the back of a genuine tempo, Party Princess is going to take a power of beating in the penultimate race on the card.

Next Best

Race 8 – Silk #10 Party Princess (13)

3yo Filly | T: Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas | J: Jason Holder (55.5kg)

Best Value at Morphettville: Shooting For Stars

Shooting For Stars is another we willing to give another chance to despite being a little ordinary since arriving at the Will Clarken & Nikki O’Shea barn. The three-year-old filly loomed up as if she would just destroy her rivals at Oakbank first-up, but faded horribly, before going on to be well beaten at the Morphettville Parks 1000m on April 22. She has been back to the trials since and we expect a much more improved effort for this third-up assignment. Alana Livesey hops on board claiming 3kg and with just 54.5kg on her back, we’re expecting Shooting For The Stars to take a sit off Sghirripa and with a strong weight advantage run straight past the leader with 100m to go and in doing so, salute at a big price with online bookmakers.

Best Value

Race 1 – Silk #10 Shooting For Stars (7)

3yo Filly | T: Will Clarken & Nikki O’Shea | J: ALana Livesey (a3) (57.5kg)
