What Sha Tin Races
Where Sha Tin Racecourse – Tai Po Rd, Sha Tin District, Hong Kong
When Saturday, May 13, 2023

Visit Ladbrokes

Racing heads to the Sha Tin turf on Saturday afternoon for a jam-packed 10-race program. The rail is in the C position the entire course, and after getting plenty of rain last weekend, plus the prospect of torrid conditions again, we could be racing on a Soft track come race-day. It’s a massive day of racing set to get underway at 1:00pm HKT (3:00pm AEST).

Best Bet at Sha Tin: Beauty Eternal

Race seven on the program is the feature Class 1 Hong Kong Macau Trophy where Beauty Eternal once again finds the best bet tag on Saturday afternoon. It comes due to his off the canvas style win last time out over this course and distance on April 30. Race rival Circuit Stellar looked off and gone with the prize when running clear of his opposition while Beauty Eternal was the only one left chasing. With 200m to go Beauty Eternal showed his class by picking up the leader right on the winning post to score an epic win for favourite backers. He shows up again on Saturday worse at the weights than in Class 2 company; however, it’s a similar field to what he beat last time, and we think he can do it again. He draws perfectly with gate four and leading hoop Zac Purton will be much closer to the speed than last start, meaning the ground he’ll have to make up with the big weight shouldn’t be an issue. This guy is a future star, and we think he’s going to improve his resume on Saturday.

Next Best at Sha Tin: Flying Ace

Flying Ace is the most intriguing runner on the weekend as he looks to resume after a lengthy spell on the sidelines. We last saw the then undefeated Swiss Ace gelding go around the Happy Valley circuit back in October, suffering his first loss by two-lengths. He got every chance but was returning from a setback and the same can be said this weekend; however, we can’t dismiss his four straight wins prior to that, and his barrier trials heading into this have been excellent. The only minor concern is Zac Purton was the jockey at the barrier trials and elected to take the ride on Happy Golf, who ironically has been steered to victory twice with Hugh Bowman on board. It’s a bizarre set of circumstances, but we’re happy to stick with Flying Ace who looks to have the class to despatch his rivals on return.

Next Best Again at Sha Tin: Happy Together

Happy Together is well overdue to repay the faith and we think he’s got a cracking opportunity to do just that in the lucky last at Sha Tin. He was beaten less than a half-length on April 15 at this track and trip, going down behind Powerful Wings. The form has been franked nicely with The Perfect Peach getting the job done in his subsequent start and Happy Together looks ready to do something similar. He got caught three-wide from the barrier last time and with barrier 11 this time, the task doesn’t get any easier for Zac Purton to find a spot. His best is clearly good enough though and with some luck for a change, Happy Together followers should be rewarded.

Best Value at Sha Tin: California Voce

California Voce didn’t disappoint in his first ever Hong Kong start on April 23, peaking on his run behind Beauty Champ. His fitness gave way when turning very wide on the course, near enough to last but he kept on nicely to the line only going down by 3.5 lengths. Matthew Chadwick will have his work cut out for him again from barrier 12, and perhaps this son of Bated Breath is looking for further, but we’re going to stick with California Voce. He looks to have acclimatised well since his European arrival and we’re confident he’ll prove to be better than Class 3 company at some stage.
