Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted May 15, 2023 Journalists Share Posted May 15, 2023 Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has today confirmed the calendar for the 2023/24 racing season, which will include a schedule of 1,301 race meetings. Victoria’s regular schedule will remain at 25 race meetings per week, consisting of two metropolitan level meetings, 13 Provincial meetings and 10 level 3 meetings. GRV reviews the racing schedule every year in consultation with a range of stakeholders, clubs and wagering partners to: ensure it is best able to achieve optimum wagering turnover and revenue outcomes through placement of key meetings in the best performing timeslots; take account of current and future racing population trends to provide maximum field sizes and racing opportunities for greyhounds and participants to compete on a regular basis; enable clubs to conduct feature meetings, carnivals and major events which have the best opportunity to maximise attendance, promotion, wagering and best quality racing; and enhance our regional racing product by bringing premium racing to the regions. Key elements of the new season’s calendar are: Ballarat will become the permanent venue for Saturday morning meetings throughout the year, providing improved consistency for participants, clubs and staff. Saturday morning meetings will continue to be capped at 10 races. The 2024 Ballarat Cup will move from a busy Easter period to Friday 31st May 2024. Victoria will host the GCA Nationals with the Sprint and Stayers Finals to be held at The Meadows on Saturday 26th August with the Nationals Straight series to be held at Healesville on the same date in the Morning Timeslot Sandown Park will conduct a Speed Star race meeting in August 2023. The Sportsbet Dream Chasers Festival returns for a second year with the Sportsbet Melbourne Cup to be held on Saturday 2nd December 2023 Sale are expected to return to racing in September 2023 following the completion of an expansive track upgrade Cranbourne will not host race meetings during the 2023/24 season with the 2023 Cranbourne Cup to be held at Sandown Park in late October. Details regarding the minimum prizemoney schedules for Group & Listed races and other feature events will be announced in June, following completion of the 2023/24 GRV budget process.
