Metropolitan racing heads to Rosehill Gardens on Saturday for a blockbuster 10-race program kicking off at 11am AEST. The Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup is the feature event, and with plenty of quality fields set up around the meeting, it’s sure to be an exciting card for punters to sink their teeth into. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and with an ideal forecast heading into Saturday, we should be racing on a genuine Good 4 surface.

Lord Mayor’s Cup: Spirit Ridge

It’s a wide-open edition of the Lord Mayor’s Cup, which is why we’re happy to take a throw at the stumps with the Annabel Neasham-trained Spirit Ridge. He’s set to resume from a short 87-day spell on Saturday following strong performances in Tasmania, running third in both the Group 3 Hobart Cup and Launceston Cup. He was forced to take a sit from some awkward gates in those races, meaning we simply didn’t see the best of this battle-tested veteran who loves to lead. He comes to this race with residual fitness on his side, and with an ideal barrier draw, we can only see this son of Nathaniel putting in a bold front-running effort. You know exactly what you’re going to get from Spirit Ridge now, and if he can put himself in a forward position turning for home, he’s going to be a hard galloper to chase down.

Best Bet: Rediener

Since returning on March 22, Rediener has found some consistency in his racing, even finding a much-deserved win on April 25 at Randwick-Kensington. It was an enormous effort from back in the field, powering over his opposition to score a one-length win. The form out of that race has seemingly stacked up nicely, with the second placegetter, Semana, producing a subsequent win, while Rediener himself almost picked up back-to-back wins, running into third last start at Gosford on May 6. This son of Redoute’s Choice meet some key rivals much better at the weights, courtesy of apprentice Jaspar Franklin and his 3kg claim. He draws to find a much more economical run throughout the 1500m, and provided he’s in striking distance on Saturday, Rediener should prove too good in the finish.

Next Best: Tradition

We’re confident we’ve found Tradition at the ideal time as he looks to find his first win of the campaign. He’s now third-up for trainer James Cummings and all signs signify this is the time you want to be backing this gelding by Frankel. He won third-up in his previous preparation after runs over the 1300m and 1500m, profiling in a very similar manner to what he’s produced since resuming on April 15. Both his runs so far have proved to be well short of his perfect trip, and alongside the unsuitable wet conditions he was trying to overcome, it’s not hard to be forgiving of this progressive three-year-old. Tradition could have some work to do from barrier nine; however, with a Good 4 surface likely and the step up in trip to 2000m, we trust Chad Schofield can slot in for a midfield sit turning for home. If he does, Tradition will be hard to hold out.

Best Value: Devil’s Throat

Devil’s Throat is a four-year-old gelding set to make his return after a 147-day spell for the Peter & Paul Snowden yard, and we think he’s a cracking each-way bet. His form last preparation is all around the BM78 level, and now coming here with an excellent barrier trial behind Doomen 10,000 winner Giga Kick, we think he can start to progress through the grades. Apprentice jockey Reece Jones gets 1.5kg off the back of Devil’s Throat, and from barrier two this guy should get every opportunity to find his fourth career win. This son of Snitzel has plenty of upside, and we think it all starts this weekend.
