Mike Moroney already has one eye on a big spring target with Bankers Choice ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben Cup.

A recent inductee to the New Zealand Hall of Fame, the Kiwi horseman revealed his Caulfield Cup plans with the five-year-old son of the 2015 winner of the race, Mongolian Khan.

“He’ll race in the Caulfield Cup and he’ll qualify because it’s a handicap and really now it would be ideal for him,” Moroney said.

“Honestly, it’s all about finding the right one, usually Queensland the lesser weight-for-age horses stay quite strong.”

As for Saturday, Moroney is relatively unfazed by drawing barrier 12 in the 13-horse field for the 2000-metre contest, more concerned by the Brisbane weather in coming days.

“He gets back a bit anyway, so he’s not really one to use draw,” Moroney said.

“The barrier draw will be a little bit tougher for him but look he hasn’t been far off them, we’re hoping that this rain will be better off later in the week for us.”

After Saturday, Moroney is looking ahead to the Q22 (2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 10.
