Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted September 21, 2018 Journalists Share Posted September 21, 2018 The Group 1 action is in Germany this weekend as Cologne plays host to the Preis von Europa. This 1-mile three-furlong contest is open to three-year-olds and upwards and has been won by some fantastic horses down through the years including Monsun (1993 & 1994), Taipan (1997 & 1998), Jukebox Jury (2009) & Nightflower (2015 & 2016). Peter Schiergen has won four of the last six runnings and he will be hoping to add to his tally with Walsingham who’s sire Campanologist took the contest in 2011. The four-year-old has yet to win at Group level but was an impressive winner of a listed race at Hannover last month. He also ran well to finish fifth behind Benbatl in the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis two starts back. The star of the race is Torcedor who is having it’s run for connections having being bought out of Jessica Harrington’s yard in Ireland. Andreas Wohler is now entrusted with training the classy son of Fastnet Rock who was last seen finishing runner-up to this season’s leading stayer Stradivarius in the Group 1 Goodwood Cup. Australian Bloodstock has bought Torcedor with a view to running him in the Melbourne Cup for which he is a current 14/1 shot. He has twice been runner-up in Group 1 races in his career but he looks sure to land this contest if running to the same form he showed for Jessica Harrington. Night Music has already had a fruitful campaign by winning a listed race and a Group 2 event at Milan. That being said the son of Sea The Stars came up short behind Best Solution in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden and a similar fate awaits him here. Windtoss finished one place ahead of Night Music in the Grosser Preis von Baden but again he may taste defeat here. He won two Group 1’s last season and if he recaptures that form he could give the favourite the most to think about. The rest of the field consists of Devastar, Veneto, Sweet Thomas and Khan.
