Racing heads to Hong Kong on Sunday afternoon for Group 1 action at Sha Tin Racecourse. The 11-race program is headlined by the Champions & Chater Cup over the 2400m, with Romantic Warrior looking for back-to-back Group 1 victories. The rail is in the A position the entire circuit, and with clear skies forecast for race day, we expect a Good 4 surface when proceedings get underway at 12:30pm HKT (2:30pm AEST).

Champions & Chater Cup: Romantic Warrior

It’s simply too hard to be against Romantic Warrior in the 2400m feature. This son of Acclamation has been up for a long campaign since resuming on November 20 but has just continued to thrive with every start. He had a jaw-dropping win in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup on December 11, producing a career-best performance in the process. He then ran into the Hong Kong champion Golden Sixty in his next two starts before finding more Group 1 success over the 2000m in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup on April 30, dispatching the likes of Dubai Honour and Prognosis in a dominant two-length victory. He now gets to the 2400m for the first time in his career and has given every indication that the trip will be no issue at all. Zac Purton takes the reins for the first time and from barrier eight of nine will need to bustle his way in for some cover throughout the journey, but if he does, you’d have to imagine Romantic Warrior will prove too classy.

Best Bet: Moduleconstruction

If there’s a horse due some luck in Hong Kong, it must be Moduleconstruction. He’s now a five-start maiden and on every occasion has finished in the minor money — either finding one better to get him beat, or simply being a victim of horrid circumstances. You can say both for his latest effort at this course and distance when running into second behind Simple Hedge on May 7. He drew barrier 12 and went forward to be cast wide throughout the 1200m journey, missing out on the win by a half-neck on the line. It was still a very encouraging run behind an ultra-talented type, and now with the benefit of barrier two, we’re convinced this son of Overshare can bag his first career win. Vincent Ho can trail behind the leaders this time, and when asked for an effort turning for home, we expect Moduleconstruction to oblige.

Next Best: Simple Hedge

The John Size-trained Simple Hedge scored an impressive victory at Sha Tin over the 1200m on May 7, as mentioned above, and did so on a deteriorating surface from a wide barrier. He powered to the line under jockey Zac Purton, leaving the impression this son of Sebring had plenty of upside moving forward. He gets a 2.5kg penalty for the win and this is a much tougher task for Simple Hedge; however, with the step up to 1400m a major factor, we’re confident that he’ll take a power of beating.

Best Value: Sauvestre

Sauvestre is set to return from a lengthy absence since October of last year, and although he’s clearly lacking race-day fitness, we love what we’ve seen from this five-year-old at the barrier trials. His latest jump-out came at the Conghua all-weather circuit on May 18, when this gelding by Hinchinbrook led all the way to score under his own steam. It’s a terrific sign for a horse that is known for his early speed. Sauvestre looks to be the natural leader here, and if they leave him alone for a cheap sectional or two, he’ll be kicking away at the top of the straight. He’s going to look like the winner at some stage, and with online bookmakers tipped to offer a good each-way price, we’re happy to take the risk with Sauvestre.
