The annual Swan Hill Racing Carnival commences on Friday afternoon with an eight-race program to kick off the long weekend. Following consistent rain in the region and more expected in the lead-up, we are anticipating the track to be in the Soft range come Friday, with a potential to end up Heavy. The rail sticks to the true position throughout and racing commences at 12:15pm AEST.

Golden Topaz Top Tip – Diamonds

The Golden Topaz (1200m) worth $150,000 is the feature event on Friday’s card, and the Chris Bieg-trained Diamonds should prove a class above as she steps back in grade. The five-year-old mare was well held two runs back in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes but was much better back in Group 3 company in the Proud Miss Stakes at Morphettville when beaten less than three lengths by Snapped. She has been back to the trials in the lead-up to this event when scoring nicely at Murray Bridge, and despite needing to lug 60kg under Dean Yendall, she is the clear class horse in the race. Diamonds has a strong turn of foot and if she brings her best, she should be striking gold.

Best Bet at Swan Hill – Netanyahu

In the closer, the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Netanyahu returns from a four-month spell looking to pick up where he left off. The five-year-old gelded son of Alamosa was nothing short of consistent last campaign, posting two wins and three minors from six runs. This bloke has a win and two minor placings when fresh, and considering he has two wins and two seconds from four goes at the 1200m, he looks perfectly placed. From barrier six, look for Brad Rawiller to hold a spot around midfield with cover, and if Netanyahu can gain a tow into the race, he is going to take a power of beating.

Next Best at Swan Hill – The Ballet Dancer

The Ballet Dancer was a smart winner at the Pakenham 1600m on May 18. The four-year-old mare enjoyed the step back from the 2025m back to the mile on that occasion and took her record to three wins and a minor placing from six runs at the trip. From barrier six for this assignment, Daniel Stackhouse will look to have this girl in a prominent position throughout the 1600m journey. With even luck in running, The Ballet Dancer should prove a touch too good for this lot in the second leg of the quaddie.

Best Value at Swan Hill – Sellente

The David O’Prey-trained Sellente has been quite a consistent stayer this campaign – if you want to rule out his below-par effort at Echuca last time out. He was simply in the worst part of the track that day and, with the race set up for the backmarkers, was always going to find it tough to feature in the finish. The four-year-old gelded son of Redente produced a strong turn of foot over 2000m at Wodonga three runs back to score and did the same again to win at Kilmore on May 11. He steps up to the 2400m for the first time in his career, and if he gets a cosy run in transit around midfield, he has a finishing sprint over 2400m that a few of these will not be able to match. Sellente looks a great each-way play with online bookmakers.

Best Value

Race 5 – Silk #6 Sellente (11)

4yo Gelding | T: David O’Prey | J: Logan McNeil (60kg)
