The Western Australian Turf Club will host nine races out of Belmont Racecourse this Saturday afternoon, with the Listed Strickland Stakes to be the feature race. The track is currently rated a Heavy 8 and there isn’t much hope for the track to get any firmer with rain forecast on Friday and Saturday. The rail will go out to the +9m position for the entire circuit, which will most likely suit on-speed runners for the first few races. The first will jump at 11:59am AWST.

Strickland Stakes Tip: Queen Alina

The Strickland Stakes will feature the Daniel & Ben Pearce-trained Queen Alina, who was very good when first-up over 1400m at this track on May 27, rattling off a very quick (34.80 seconds) last 600m to finish third. At the back end of her last preparation, this daughter of Mahuta was considered one of the top three or four runners in the Group 2 Perth Cup before she was scratched. After running so well over 1400m on her return, this mare will love the rise in distance to 2000m, where she has shown some of her best form during the early stages of her career. Chris Parnham will retain the ride after riding her last start, looking to keep his solid record on her intact, with two wins and a third from three rides so far. There will be a fair amount of speed in this race and Queen Alina will drop out the back, but with only seven runners she won’t be giving them much of a start and she will be flying home late.

Best Bet at Belmont: Category Three

After receiving a ‘10 out of 10’ ride from William Pike last start at this track over 1200m, Category Three from the Adam Durrant yard took her record to three wins and four placings from nine starts. This daughter of Xtravagant appeared badly held up approaching the 200m mark, but somehow Pike found a needle eye gap and this four-year-old mare burst through to put up a winning margin within 50m and held on to win first-up. After constantly finishing as the bridesmaid last preparation, it was very good to see this girl run through a gap and attack the line, even though she appeared as though she was waiting for her rivals once she hit the front. With the benefit of a run under her belt and Pike sticking with her for this race on Saturday, she is a clear on top selection for us in this race, and if she gets even luck in the final 300m, Category Three should be winning.

Next Best at Belmont: Ginger Baker

The final event of the day will feature the Vernon Brockman-trained Ginger Baker will be seeking a hattrick of wins, after claiming victory in his last two starts at this track and distance. At his last start, this son Gingerbread Man led from start to finish to claim a one-length victory over the fast-finishing Knot Secret in a Minimum 70 Handicap. However, on Saturday he will step up in grade to a RTG78+, but with that he will drop 2.5kg to carry 57.5kg on a Heavy track – conditions in which he has shown liking to – with a record of one win and a placing from two starts. With a few speed influences drawn around him, we expect Brad Parnham to jump positively and look to take up the lead unless another runner wants to go on with it and go too hard. With his superior wet track and recent winning form, Ginger Baker should play a prominent role in the finish and give us a great sight for our money.

Best Value at Belmont: Ruby Noir

Our value play of the day will be the Summer Dickson-trained Ruby Noir who will be competing in the One Metro Win Graduation Handicap over 2000m seeking the third win of her career. This four-year-old mare has been getting back in her races this time in and running on nicely, but constantly running out of time in the concluding stages. At her last start, this daughter of Blackfriars settled near the rear of the field and made a searching run, but ultimately faded in the final 100m, which suggests to us that she will enjoy the drop back in distance from 2100m to 2000m on Saturday. This mare will also get Paul Harvey taking the reins again, who has a good relationship with her, recording a win and two placings from four rides.
