Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted June 10, 2023 Journalists Posted June 10, 2023 Stonestreet Stables' CLAIRIERE (m, 5, Curlin–Cavorting, by Bernardini) became just the fourth female in the history of the GI Ogden Phipps S. and the first in 15 years to successfully defend her title in the race when reeling in Search Results (Flatter) in a driving finish Saturday afternoon at Belmont. Clairiere was content to drop out to the rear of the field as longshot Gamestonks (Blofeld) took over at the head of affairs from GI La Troienne S. winner Played Hard (Into Mischief), who set the early pace while racing well off the inside down the backstretch. Still conservatively ridden by Joel Rosario despite a pedestrian pace that saw the opening three-quarters go up in 1:13.85, Clairiere was produced down the center of the track and she whooshed home to score cozily. Search Results, who took the GI Acorn S. on this program in 2021, tackled and passed a resurgent Played Hard in upper stretch and pinched a big break, only to be run down in the dying strides. Clairiere's dam took this race back in 2016 for Kiaran McLaughlin and it was a fourth Phipps in the last five years for Steve Asmussen, who won with Midnight Bisou (2019) and She's A Julie (2020).
