Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted June 13, 2023 Journalists Share Posted June 13, 2023 What Sandown Races Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171 When Wednesday, June 14, 2023 First Race 12:25pm AEST Visit Ladbrokes Racing will return to Sandown Racecourse this Wednesday afternoon for a competitive eight-race card on the Hillside course. After racing on this track on Saturday in the Soft range, we expect to see it stay in that same region for this meeting. The rail will be pushed out another 5m to the +10m position for the entire circuit, with racing set to kick off at 12:25pm AEST. Best Bet at Sandown: Tasman Park We will have to wait until the penultimate race of the day for our best bet, but the Mike Moroney-trained Tasman Park should be worth the wait. The four-year-old gelding was very good first-up over 1300m on this same track on May 27, running home from worse than midfield to finish fifth – only beaten 1.45 lengths by Cardigan Queen. This son of Ocean Park settled too far back to really challenge the placegetters, but considering he was first-up off a 20-week spell, the Moroney team would have been very happy with his return run. On Wednesday he will drop back from a Saturday Benchmark 78 to a midweek Benchmark 70, so he will have to carry a big weight; however, Moroney has engaged Wiremu Pinn and his 3kg claim, which see him only carry 59kg. If Pinn can navigate the sticky barrier draw (14 of 15) and find a nice position off the rail just better than midfield, Tasman Park should prove very hard to beat. Best Bet Race 6 – #5 Tasman Park (14) 4yo Mare | T: Mike Moroney | J: Wiremu Pinn (a3) (62kg) $4.20 with Bet365 Next Best at Sandown: Mr Mojo Risin’ The Andrew Forsman-trained Mr Mojo Risin’ has had two starts in Australia since making the trip across the ditch from New Zealand, with his last-start second behind Cardigan Queen at this track and trip on May 27 being his best of the two. It is clear to us that Forsman has a high opinion of this three-year-old gelding, as he entered him in the Listed Wanganui Guineas on debut and then in the Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas at his third start as a maiden, where he finished second both times. This son of Deep Field didn’t get to lead or sit on-speed at his last start but made ground along the rail to take the lead before being beaten by the eventual winner, who was in the much better going out wide. Wiremu Pinn will take the ride on this gelding once again, and with his 3kg claim he will only have to carry 56.5kg and should be able to find the lead from barrier one. Pinn should be able to find the lead inside Do You Reckon, and if Mr Mojo Risin’ settles and shows that finishing burst that he showed last start, he will go very close once again. Next Best Race 6 – #12 Mr Mojo Risin’ (1) 3yo Gelding | T: Andrew Forsman | J: Wiremu Pinn (a3) (59.5kg) $6.50 with Ladbrokes Best Value at Sandown: King Couver The last race of the day looks to be an open race, with only three runners marked in single figures with most online bookmakers, so we will be siding with the Greg Eurell-trained King Couver who was a bit unlucky last start at Mornington over 2000m on May 31. As a runner who likes to sit on-speed or lead, it’s not ideal to miss the jump by two lengths, but that is what this four-year-old gelding did last start. He picked himself up to settle in fourth behind the leaders; however, he over raced and didn’t settle for the first 600m of the race. Even though this son of Vancouver had these factors against him, he hung tough and battled all the way down the home straight to finish fifth only beaten by 2.15 lengths. On Wednesday, he will drop back to 1800m from 2000m, and Dean Yendall will take the ride from barrier four, where he also appears to be the only leader. If Yendall can get King Couver to jump and take up the lead, we should see him pick up the tempo with 600m to go and use his fitness to get most of his rivals off the bit early and make it a true staying test.
