The Brisbane Racing Club will host its annual Tattersall’s Tiara Day out of Eagle Farm Racecourse this Saturday afternoon, with the final Group 1 of the Queensland Racing Carnival highlighting the nine-race program. The track is currently rated a Good 4, and with no rain forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to be racing in the Good range all day. The rail has been pushed out slightly to the +6m position, and the first race will jump at 11:43am AEST.

Race 1: Listed Tattersall’s Stakes (1400m)

A small field of six two-year-olds will open the meeting at Eagle Farm, with the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Zoukerette looking to return to the winners circle after she finished fourth in the Listed Oxlade Stakes last start. This daughter of I Am Invincible was made to sit three-wide outside the two leaders for the entire 1300m trip in the Oxlade Stakes, so she had every right to fade out of the race and finish outside the top four. However, she boxed on well and was only swamped by a few runners that got much better runs than her in the final 100m. In a smaller field, we expect to see John Allen push forward again and settle outside Infancy, before kicking clear in the home straight to record her second career victory.

Race 2: QTIS 3YO Fillies Plate (1200m)

Ekaterina will be dropping back from the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes last start to run in a QTIS 3YO Fillies Plate on Saturday, where if she can produce a similar run to her last start seventh in the Dane Ripper, she will be extremely hard to beat this weekend. Although she drops in grade from the Group 2, this daughter of Russian Revolution will only rise 2.5kg in the weights, as the race is run under set weights conditions. The clear danger will be the current favourite Chinny Boom; however, with her being first-up coming off a lacklustre 13th of 14 in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate at her last start, we are happy to side with the Robert Heathcote-trained filly who will have a fitness and form edge.

Race 3: Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2400m)

The first of the Group races at Eagle Farm will be the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup, where the Kris Lees-trained Luncies has opened as an even money favourite and looks very hard to beat after his good run in the Group 2 The Q22 last start. This six-year-old gelding wasn’t given much of a chance by most bookies in The Q22, going around as a $21 outsider, but as he made his run around the outside of the slowing leaders, it was clear that he was going to run a big race and play a role in the finish. This son of Iffraaj will drop 4kg for this race on Saturday, which gets him into the race with the equal bottom weight of 55kg. Although the even money odds for a horse that hasn’t won since May 2021 appears to be unders, this race would be the weakest race that he has contested in some time, and he should be winning.

Race 4: Battle Of The Bush (1200m)

The final of the Battle Of The Bush will see a full field of 16 runners who haven’t won a metropolitan race in the last year clash at Eagle Farm over 1200m. We will be siding with the Toni Schofield-trained Grand Palazzo who has won her last four starts, including her last start win in the Battle Of The Bush Qualifier by 2.75 lengths at Barcaldine on June 10. This five-year-old mare is in the best form of her life, with four of her eight wins coming in the last two months. Matthew Gray will follow this daughter of All Too Hard to Brisbane for the ride, seeking his fifth win in a row on the mare.

Race 5: Listed Tattersall’s Mile (1600m)

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Osmose has been good without winning since making her debut in Australia, with her last two starts seeing her finish third and fourth in the Group 3 Pam O’Neill Stakes and National Classic Fillies & Mares. After getting stuck behind the slowing leaders last start, this daughter of Zoffany had to wait for a gap to appear on the inside and once it did she let down with a strong finishing burst. On Saturday, this four-year-old mare has drawn a wide barrier, so we expect to see Tim Clark settle toward the rear of the field and come down the outside with a big run. If Osmose gets more luck and is within 3 lengths of the leaders on the home turn, she will play a prominent role in the finish.

Race 6: Listed Tattersall’s Gold Crown (2137m)

After producing a massive run in the National Classic Fillies & Mares last start, Thalassophile is a deserved favourite for the Listed Tattersall’s Gold Crown this Saturday afternoon. This four-year-old mare finished fourth in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup over 2000m two starts back, where she was only beaten just over half a length by Bois Dargent. With her stepping up in distance from 1600m to 2137m, we aren’t worried about the big jump from race-to-race this Saturday. If this daughter of Not A Single Doubt can perform at the same level as she did last start, she should prove to be the better stayer in this contest and find her way back into the winners circle for the fist time in four months.

Selections:
  • silks1

    THALASSOPHILE

  • silks13

    NOAH ‘N’ A DEEL

    PRETTY AMAZING

  • silks4

Race 7: Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m)

The 33rd running of the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara appears to be one of the more open editions of the race that we have seen in some time, with only three runners under double figures with most online bookmakers. Opal Ridge has opened as the favourite at $3.30, closely followed by Ruthless Dame at $5. Will one of the three fillies take out the feature race of the day, or will one of the mares reign supreme in this year’s Tatts Tiara?

Race 8: Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m)

The Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted-trained Contemptuous will go into the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes second-up after he finished third behind Prince Of Boom in the Group 2 Moreton Cup on his return to the racetrack on June 3. This son of Rubick has only missed the placings once when second-up and at the track and trip, while his record at 1200m is very solid (7:4-1-1). After being beaten by two rivals that had a clear fitness edge over him, Contemptuous will have derived a lot of benefit from his first run this preparation, and with the 6kg weight swing in his favour against Prince Of Boom, he should go very close to winning. Jaden Lloyd is riding in great form at the moment, and if he can navigate an economical path from barrier 12, Contemptuous will give us a great sight at double figure odds with most online betting sites.

Race 9: No Metro Win Handicap (1200m)

The Annabel Neasham-trained Swiss Exile brings the best form lines into this race after running second last Saturday behind Chairman at Ipswich. Before that start, he finished 3.5 lengths off Hawaii Five Oh in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic and then 3.4 lengths off Yellow Brick in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas. This No Metro Win Handicap will be the weakest race that he has contested his fourth career start, when he contested a Maiden Handicap at the Sunshine Coast on April 29 in 2022. This son of Pariah has only been contesting three-year-old races, but when you consider that he hasn’t been far off the best three-year-olds in the country, his form is far superior to most of his rivals in this race.
