Just two weeks to go before the start of the 2023 Darwin Cup Carnival and not only has this weekend’s meeting attracted 60 acceptors, but there is an element of evenness in all seven races which should make for an excellent day’s racing.

It’s the last significant hitout before the $75,000 Darwin Guineas (1600m) on Day 1 of the carnival on July 8, so best to keep an eye on the three-year-olds in races two and seven. Kaonic and Smuggling, respective Darwin Cup and Palmerston Sprint prospects, line up in the feature – a $22,500 Benchmark 76 over 1300m.

There has been no significant rain in Darwin since April 27 with 0.2mm falling on June 14. Although there is a five per cent chance of rain on Saturday, sunny conditions and a 15-20km/h breeze from the NE are forecasted with a top temperature of 32C. The rail will be in the true position and the track will be a good surface.

BEST BET: LAMOREE

Formerly trained in Adelaide by leading pair Richard and Chantelle Jolly, the four-year-old mare returned from a six month spell to finish second over 1000m (BM60) at Morphettville Parks on February 18 before returning to the same venue to finish fourth over 1000m (Class 1) on March 18. More than respectable form, so if the daughter of Headwater can adapt to the Fannie Bay dirt she will take some stopping. The wide gate in the nine-horse field is a slight concern and the mare has never raced beyond 1050m, but she has decent form after a spell (6:1-1-1). Lightly raced since debuting in January 2021 (15:1-3-3), Lomaree’s only win was in a 1050m Oakbank maiden in January last year.

NEXT BEST BET: FRACTION LATE

This guy has impressed this prep since returning from a spell. Two narrow seconds behind Global Wonder over 1100m (0-58) on April 14 and Zip Lane over 1100m (0-58) on Anzac Day were followed up by a win over 1200m (Class 2) on May 20 before a last-start second behind Pop Magic over 1000m (0-58) three weeks ago. The four-year-old gelding made his debut during the Darwin Cup Carnival last year and in five starts his best effort was victory in an 1100m maiden in his second appearance after a first up fifth behind First Crusade against fellow three-year-olds over 1100m at Benchmark 66 level. The opposition was too hot for the son of Sooboog back then, but he has since proven highly competitive.

BEST VALUE: ALL HARD WOOD

A veteran of 76 starts, which include seven wins and 19 minor placings, this eight-year-old gelding has done little wrong since arriving in the NT from the John Hickmott and Carrina Riggs stable at Murray Bridge. A sixth over 1200m (BM54) on Anzac Day was followed by a third over 1300m (0-70) on May 6. The son of All Too Hard was third behind Taipan Tommy, a star during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival, in the Tennant Creek Cup (1600m) before a fifth over 1600m (0-58) back at Fannie Bay. All Hard Wood is backing up after finishing 6.3 lengths adrift of Hettinger over 1600m (0-58) last Saturday, so he will keep three-year-olds Fierce Legend, Field Commander and Tubthumper honest.
