Ipswich racing preview

What Ipswich Races
Where Ipswich Turf Club – 219 Brisbane Rd, Bundamba QLD 4304
When Friday, June 30, 2023
First Race 11:32am AEST

Visit Ladbrokes

Racing heads to Ipswich this Friday afternoon for a very competitive nine-race program kicking off at 11:32am local time. With no rain on the forecast for Thursday and Friday, we expect to be racing on the current track rating of a Good 4 for the entire meeting. The rail will be in the +4.5m position for the whole circuit, which should favour on-speed runners in the shorter-distance races.

Best Bet at Ipswich – Paienbara

After back-to-back wins in Maiden and Benchmark 68 grade, David Murphy threw Paienbara into the deep end by entering him in the Group 2 Gunsynd Classic last start. Even though he finished second last, he was far from disgraced as he was beaten by the likes of Rediener and Yellow Brick by six lengths. Dropping back to 1350m – a distance he has won at twice – in a 3YO Benchmark 65, we expect this three-year-old gelding to settle behind the speed from barrier two and prove too good in the concluding stages.

Best Bet

Race 9 – Silks#2 Paienbara (2)

3yo Gelding | T: David Murphy | J: Justin Huxtable (59.5kg)

Next Best at Ipswich – Sir Warwick

The Jake Capewell-trained Sir Warwick is dropping back from the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at this track on June 17, where he finished 11th of 16 – albeit only beaten three lengths. Before that, this five-year-old gelding ran very well at Eagle Farm in a Benchmark 85 over 1200m on June 3, finishing third behind Legal Esprit and Fleetwood Maca in a driving finish. Now that the son of Written Tycoon drops back from 1350m to 1200m, we expect him to perform much better given four of his six wins have come at the distance. With a race-fit horse underneath, we expect James Orman to push forward and take up the lead as Sir Warwick proves too good.

Next Best

Race 4 – Silks#4 Sir Warwick (1)

5yo Gelding | T: Jake Capewell | J: James Orman (59kg)

Best Value at Ipswich – Keeta

Although Keeta, for the Belinda Mair stable, was first over the line last start over 1200m at the Sunshine Coast on June 11, the five-year-old gelding lost the victory in the steward’s room afterwards. The run was deserving of the win, after he carried a massive 62.5kg and was very strong in the final 100m. This gelding now drops back to 1100m and takes on a Class 3 field, and he will only have to carry 56.5kg with the aid of Minonette Kennedy’s 1.5kg claim. From barrier six, expect Kennedy to search for a sit on the rails, a couple of pairs behind the leaders, and look to replicate last start’s finishing burst over the final 200m.

Best Value

Race 7 – Silks#2 Keeta (6)

5yo Gelding | T: Belinda Mair | J: Minonette Kennedy (a1.5) (68kg)
