Racing on Saturday the 1st of July in the Central Districts of New Zealand is being held at Hastings with 10 races carded on a track that may improve slightly from its current heavy status as there is no rain in the immediate weather forecast. The first race begins at 11am (NZDT)

Hastings Best Bet: Carignan

The last race here on Saturday is where the best bet is found in Carignan who has put the writing on the wall, that another win isn’t far away with three consecutive second placings, the most recent being on his home track at Whanganui nearly a month ago. By race 10 it will be a real slog out there and the 1400 metre journey will feel more like a mile. The wide draw will be a bonus and he certainly deserves a winning turn.

Best Bet

Race 10 – Silk #2 Carignan (11)

3yo Gelding | T: K T Myers | J: L Sutherland (59.5kg)

$4.40 with PlayUp

Hastings Next Best: Tavis Court

Tavis Court has raced as though he has needed each of his three runs back from a spell. His last run was particularly disappointing as he was among the first to be put under pressure. He is much better than that and the drop back to 1200 metres could be the key to him finding his best again. The 3 kilo claim will come in handy and he should put himself right on the pace from his inside gate. We are giving him one more chance.

Next Best

Race 7 – Silk #1 Tavis Court (1)

3yo Filly | T: A M Clement | J: L Douglas (60.5kg)

$10.00 with Neds

Best Value: Dawn Jessie

Dawn Jessie found the step up from 1300 metres to 2200 metres last time out a bridge too far and after leading up at Awapuni she knocked up down the home straight. She will be at her peak on Saturday and the four-kilo claim from improving apprentice Jim Chung will be a real assist. She has won three times on the Hastings track and copes with any track condition. She can take them all the way.

Best Value

Race 4 – Silk #2 Dawn Jessie (7)

8yo Mare | T: P W Lock | J: Jim Chung (57.5kg)

$7.50 with Unibet
