Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted July 4, 2023 Journalists Share Posted July 4, 2023 Canterbury Park Racecourse is one of the many tracks owned and operated by the Australian Turf Club and is considered one of the most family friendly environments in NSW horse racing. Known for the Friday night racing summer series in Sydney, the evening racing scene would be virtually non-existent without the operation of Canterbury Park Racecourse, which underwent redevelopment in 2020. Canterbury racecourse provides racegoers with free entry for these events and with plenty of activities for people of all ages – including live music, food stalls and a carnival atmosphere to boot. The racing produced at Canterbury continues to thrive and improve, with quality Listed races scheduled throughout the season to go along with regularly scheduled mid-week racing every year. The innovation of Canterbury Racecourse to adapt to the likes of Moonee Valley in Victoria has provided a new avenue for horse racing in NSW and now finds itself a major hub for the more fun side of the industry. It has a circumference of 1,567m and has a short straight of 308m to the winning post. The course proper has multiple chute positions, usually reserved for the 1550m start nearest to the winning post, and the sprint trips over 1200m and 1250m also utilise a chute before finding the main running rail. Major races held at Canterbury While the quality of racing at Canterbury Park isn’t always the highest, it still does play host to a couple of Listed events. These are reserved for the sprinters in the Canterbury Classic (1100m) and the PJ Handicap (1200m).
