Australia’s highly accomplished rider, Jimmy Orman, achieved a momentous feat in Queensland racing as he secured his 100th metropolitan win for the season at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

This accomplishment elevated him to the prestigious ranks of the metropolitan centurion club, alongside renowned jockeys Chris Munce and Jeff Lloyd. Although the victory had a narrow margin, its significance was monumental for Orman, who felt an immense sense of relief.

While Orman has yet to claim a coveted Group 1 victory, he expressed his delight at surpassing the 100-win milestone for the first time. Only the exceptional James McDonald has ridden more metropolitan winners this season, solidifying his position as Australia’s leading jockey with a national tally of 179 wins.

Orman admitted that he would have preferred the milestone to be kept quiet until it was achieved, but he acknowledged the sense of release that came with its realization. Reflecting on his journey, he commented, “It felt like a long time coming, so I’m glad I held on during that photo finish. Reaching this milestone is certainly a significant achievement.”

In 2017, Jeff Lloyd became the first jockey to reach 100 metropolitan winners in a season, followed by Chris Munce in 2012. Prior to their accomplishments, Mick Dittman took 33 years to break Bill Briscoe’s record of 86 winners in a Brisbane season, finally achieving an admirable total of 97.5 winners in 1979-80.

Orman humorously acknowledged the changes in competition over the years, stating, “To be fair to those guys, the competition isn’t quite what it was back then. Nonetheless, it’s pretty cool to be part of their club, considering they are exceptional jockeys.”

Jeff Lloyd’s record of 137 metropolitan winners during the 2016-17 season remains untouched, standing as a testament to his exceptional talent and remarkable success.
