Feature racing returns to Caulfield on Saturday afternoon as the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes headlines a bumper nine-race program. With clear skies forecast in the leadup, we expect to be racing on a Soft 5, despite the track coming up a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances. Sir John Monash Stakes Day is set to commence at 11:50am AEST, with the rail out 3m the entire circuit.

Best Bet at Caulfield: General Beau

General Beau ran Sigh to within a long neck at Flemington on June 17 when giving his rival 6kg while lugging 60kg himself. He gets in with 58.5kg for this, which should only aid his efforts when running on from the rear of the field. He was far from disgraced in The Goodwood two runs back and placed at Group 3 level behind Savatoxl the start prior. Three of his four wins have come at Caulfield, and his best should be good enough this weekend.

Best Bet at Caulfield: Brigantine

Brigantine comes to Caulfield following a third behind Munhamek in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap at Eagle Farm and without a doubt brings the best form into this weak BM100. Three runs back he finished 1.6 lengths off subsequent Tatts Tiara winner Palaisipan, suggesting his best performance will blow away a field like this. Ben Melham will have him stalking the speed from barrier four, and Brigantine should prove a class above in the home stretch.

Best Bet

Race 6 – Silks#2 Brigantine (4)

4yo Gelding | T: James Cummings | J: Ben Melham (58.5kg)

$2.70 with Boombet

Next Best Bet at Caulfield: Aristonous

Annabel Neasham’s Aristonous has impressed with classy wins at Newcastle and then again at Randwick on June 24. Barrier 13 is offset by the fact the four-year-old gets back upon settling anyway, saved for one last crack at the leaders. With a genuinely run 2000m event expected, the race looks perfectly set up for Josh Parr to have this bloke building through his gears approaching the home turn before putting them away.

Next Best

Race 2 – Silks#6 Aristonous (13)

4yo Gelding | T: Annabel Neasham | J: Josh Parr (59.5kg)

Best Value at Caulfield: Tokenist

The Matt Laurie-trained Tokenist has returned in fine form this campaign with a win and two minors from his three starts. Despite being well beaten last time out at Sandown, he chased home a potential star in Golden Path when finding the line nicely for third. Prior to that, he destroyed an easier field at Geelong, and he looks to be striking a race like this at the right time. Ben Melham will look to hold a midfield spot on Tokenist, who has a nice turn of foot and looks a good each-way play at double digits with the best online bookmakers.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silks#2 Tokenist (8)

3yo Gelding | T: Matt Laurie | J: Ben Melham (57.5kg)
