What Gawler Races
Where Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club – Barnet Rd, Evanston SA 5116
When Saturday, July 8, 2023
First Race 11:32am ACST

Visit Ladbrokes

For just the second time this year, metropolitan racing in South Australia heads to Gawler on a Saturday afternoon. The track has come up a Soft 7, and with showers forecast in the lead-up, it is hard to see the track receiving an upgrade. The rail returns to the true position for the first time since April 25, while racing commences at 11:32am ACST.

Best Bet at Gawler: Exalted Fire

Michael Hickmott’s Exalted Fire was beaten less than a half-length when resuming at the Murray Bridge 1400m. Having led the field up, he was headed early in the home straight but kept finding under pressure to suggest he was worth following wherever he went next. The five-year-old gelding has two minor placings from three runs second-up, so he clearly takes great benefit from a fresh run. Campbell Rawiller’s claim gets the weight down to 59.5kg, and if Exalted Fire can gain an economical run just off the leaders, he should be winning.

Best Bet

Race 7 – Silk #1 Exalted Fire (4)

5yo Gelding | T: Michael Hickmott | J: Campbell Rawiller (a2) (61.5kg)

Next Best at Gawler: Capulet

Placing in all three starts this campaign, Capulet strikes a winnable two-year-old race and looks the classy one in the field. The Extreme Choice filly’s best performance came when taking a sit off the speed and running on late, and from barrier six we expect Madison Lloyd to land her in a trailing position. With just 56kg on her back following Lloyd’s claim, Capulet should be finishing the best and bringing up a deserved maiden victory.

Next Best

Race 1 – Silk #5 Capulet (6)

2yo Filly | T: Tony & Calvin McEvoy | J: Madison Lloyd (a2) (58kg)

Best Value at Gawler: Silent Don

Silent Don has strung together some nice efforts over the last six weeks, including a win and two minor placings. The five-year-old was game in defeat at Morphettville last time out when forced to travel wide and ultimately being nabbed in the shadows of the post. That effort and his win prior came on rain-affected going, so we have no doubt he will handle what is in front of him. Ben Price’s claim gets Silent Don in with just 52.5kg, while the step back to 1700m from 1800m is far from a deterrent.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silk #8 Silent Don (4)

5yo Gelding | T: Will Clarken & Nikki O’Shea | J: Ben Price (a1.5) (54kg)

$8 with PlayUp
