The North Island of New Zealand is hosting another race meeting on Saturday and it’s being held at Awapuni. The nine race Awapuni race program is being run on what will be a very heavy surface with rain forecast on the day. The first race begins at 11.30am (NZST). Here are our free Awapuni tips and best bets for Saturday, July 8, 2023.

Best bet at Awapuni: Old Town Road

Old Town Road in race seven is our best bet of the day. This 5yo gelding, by El, was unlucky last start, flying home too late on the track over the shorter distance of 1100m with the step up to 1400m looking ideal. He handles heavy going, having run 16 times in those conditions for five wins and five placings. Trainer Lisa Latta has a good record on her home track and with top jockey Jonathan Riddell doing the riding, we’re confident he can go close to getting another win here.

Next Best Bet

Race 7 – Old Town Road #3 Old Town Rd (1)

5yo Gelding | T: Lisa Latta | J: Jonathan Riddell (59.5kg)

$2.70 with Neds

Next best at Awapuni: Fabian Hawk

The next best comes in Race Eight with the Peter Didham trained Fabian Hawk looking for his third win in a row. This four-year-old gelding has excellent form and is unbeaten on the track and over the 2100m distance. In form jockey Jonathan Parkes is doing the riding and from barrier two he will be ridden forward and look to lead all the way in similar fashion to his last two wins on the track. There should be a good each-way price at horse betting sites to be found on this runner.

Next Best Bet

Race 8 – Fabian Hawk #3 Fabian Hawk (2)

4yo Gelding | T: Peter Didham | J: Jonathan Parkes (59.5kg)

$2.70 with Neds

Best value at Awapuni: Princess Ani

The Mike Breslin trained Princess Ani is our value bet at Awapuni in Race Nine. This six-year-old mare  drops a rating band here and is due to strike form. Awapuni would appear to be her favourite track having placed five times from nine starts on the course. Her best runs have come on a heavy track and there should be a decent each-way price on this horse to be found with jockey Jim Chung claiming 4kg.

Best Value

Race 9 – Princess Ani #11 Princess Ani (15)

6yo Mare | T: Mike Breslin | J: Jim Chung A4 (57.5kg)

$13 with Neds
