Hong Kong racing returns to Sha Tin on Sunday evening for a massive 11-race program set for decision. History could be made with jockey Zac Purton looking to break the record for the most wins in a season, chasing win number 170 to surpass Joao Moreira.

The rail is in the C+3 for the meeting and we should be racing on a Good 4 surface with the weather map looking favorable for race-day. The first race is scheduled for 4pm HKT (6pm AEST).

Sha Tin Best Bet: Helios Express

Helios Express should be undefeated since arriving in Hong Kong and picked up a much-deserved win last start on June 25. It was an incredible three-length victory for this son of Toronado dismantling his opposition and smashing the clock in the process. He got a perfect steer by Zac Purton on that occasion and now cops a 4.5kg penalty for his trouble; however, we don’t think that’s going to hinder this progressive three-year-old. He draws barrier four to gain a soft run in transit and provided Zac Purton finds clear air turning for home – it’s going to take a very good horse to stop Helio Express picking up his third career win.

Next Best at Sha Tin: Courier Wonder

Courier Wonder has been competing in the top-quality sprinter contests in Hong Kong and now finds a much easier task on Sunday afternoon. He finished fourth behind Lucky Sweynesse last start in the Group 3 Sha Tin Vase on June 4 and chased home gamely to be beaten less than three lengths. He comes back into Class 1 company for the first time since March 5 where he should’ve saluted with an ounce of luck, and we’re hoping he gets more of that in this small field of six runners. Courier Wonder hasn’t picked up a win since May 2021 and if he doesn’t find the winners enclosure this weekend, you’d be hard pressed to back him again moving forward.

Next Best

Race 2 – Silks#1 Courier Wonder (1)

5yo Gelding | T: John Size | J: Hugh Bowman (61kg)

Next Best Again at Sha Tin: Lapras

Lapras is a first starter for the Douglas Whyte barn, and we’ve seen enough to suggest he can be more than competitive in his Hong Kong debut. He’s had three barrier trials leading into the weekend with his two Conghua turf jump-outs particularly catching the eye. We powered through the line under his own steam in both trials before heading to the all-weather circuit for another minor effort gallop. It’s always interesting to see trainers produce untested horses late in the Hong Kong season and we’re convinced Lapras has plenty of ability heading to the races for the first time.

Next Best Again

Race 4 – Silks#5 Lapras (6)

3yo Gelding | T: Douglas Whyte | J: Lyle Hewitson (58.5kg)
