Elite Power Noses Out Gunite In Vanderbilt, Keeps Win Streak Going

He needed every inch of the Saratoga stretch to do it but Eclipse champion male sprinter ELITE POWER (h, 5, Curlin–Broadway's Alibi, by Vindication) pushed his win streak to eight with a victory over a game Gunite (Gun Runner) in Saturday's GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. Trying an off track for the first time, the Bill Mott trainee stayed back in the pack while Dean Delivers (Cajun Breeze) did the dirty work up front with Gunite coming alongside to pressure into the turn. Elite Power had to swing out wide from fifth past the quarter pole and just squeaked by Gunite in the shadow of the wire after a sustained stretch run. The field covered the six furlongs in 1:09.22.
