It might be the start of a new racing season in the Northern Territory on Wednesday, but it’s also Day 6 of the Darwin Cup Carnival at Fannie Bay with 63 runners accepting for the seven-event card. Headlined by the $40,000 Jaytex Construction Cup (1300m), it will be the calm before the storm with the $135,000 Palmerston Sprint (1200m) on Saturday followed by the $200,000 Darwin Cup (2050m) on Monday.

It hasn’t rained in the Top End since April 27 (0.6mm), with sunny and breezy conditions expected on Wednesday with a top temperature of 32C. The rail is in the true position and Fannie Bay track will once again be a good dirt surface.

BEST BET: GREAT DIVINER

This guy performed admirably in four starts in Alice Springs in April and March – his best effort was a third over 1100m. The five-year-old gelding hasn’t put a foot wrong since arriving in Darwin, managing two wins, three seconds and a fifth. Those victories came over 1200m in June and over 1300m on July 8. The son of Shamus Award was a last-start second behind stablemate Wolfburn in the Bridge Toyota Cup (1600m) at 0-76 level on July 19, so he is clearly in good touch. He hasn’t drawn an ideal gate after jumping from the inside barrier in his past four starts.

NEXT BEST BET: ENVENOMATE

This former Victoria and NSW galloper debuted in Alice Springs in February and was victorious over 1200m in Class 2 company. The five-year-old son of Anacheeva had a further four starts at Pioneer Park with his best effort a win over 1200m in April during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival. After a two-month spell, Envenomate was a first-up fourth when finishing 2.8 lengths adrift of Throw At Da Stumps over 1200m, before winding up impressively from the rear in the home straight to finish 2.8 lengths behind Hettinger in third place over 1600m. Dropping down in grade is a bonus.

BEST VALUE: GLOBAL WONDER

This guy has been a model of consistency in six starts since March and was desperately unlucky last start over 1300m on July 22 after leading comfortably with 200m to go before going down narrowly to the fast-finishing Lady Tucan. The five-year-old gelding was victorious over 1100m in April before a third over 1100m behind Canton Kid in May and another third over 1300m behind New Roman in June. The son of Hinchinbrook has four wins, six second and six thirds in 27 starts at Fannie Bay. Global Wonder only has to repeat his last-start performance and he will be hard to stop.
