Lawrence Stakes is a 1400m event held at Caulfield Racecourse under Weight For Age conditions. First run in 1965, the PB Lawrence Stakes has a purse of $300,000. Lawrence Stakes result 1st – Mr Brightside ($4.00)2nd – I Am Superman ($1.90)3rd – Buffalo River ($4.20) Recent P.B. Lawrence Stakes results 2022: Mr Brightside makes WFA statement Fresh off winning the Doncaster Mile in the autumn, the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Mr Brightside made an emphatic weight-for-age statement when saluting first-up in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes. As Buffalo River ($17) booted clear on the home turn to establish a handy break, jockey Craig Williams produced Mr Brightside ($4 fav) at the right time and he chased hard to run down the leader, while also holding off the fast-finishing I Am Superman ($5) to score. Mr Brightside is set to follow former stable star’s Better Loosen Up’s 1990 spring path, with a start in the Feehan Stakes up next, with a golden ticket into to the Cox Plate on the line for the winner. 2021: From the Mildura Cup to Group 2 glory Not many horses go from winning a country cup to Group 2 glory at their next start, but Sierra Sue did just that in the 2021 P.B. Lawrence Stakes. Having struggled for form since winning the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes in the spring of 2020, trainers Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young opted to send their star mare Sierra Sue to the Mildura Cup in a bid to gain confidence ahead of a big spring campaign. The move paid immediate dividends with Sierra Sue thundering home to claim the $300,000 Group 2 feature at Caulfield at her next start following a confident ride from John Allen. 2020: Savatiano arrives in time Godoplhin’s Savatiano has arrived in time to claim the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes against a star-studded field. Up against the likes of Mystic Journey, Arcadia Queen, Streets Of Avalon and Cascadian, the mare had her work cut out for her. However, aided by a gun ride just off the leaders’ heels, Mark Zahra gave Savatiano every chance to claim Group 2 glory. Once the sprint went on with 300m to go, Zahra peeled off the leaders’ heels and managed to wear down the fit Sircconi, who sat outside the lead throughout in the shadows of the winning post. 2019: Mystic Journey makes spring statement Tasmania’s favourite mare Mystic Journey made an emphatic statement when saluting as favourite in the 2019 Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes. Trainer Adam Trinder had stressed in the lead-up to the Lawrence that Mystic Journey was vulnerable on any turf surface not rated good so the soft (5) ground also posed questions. Like many good horses, Mystic Journey overcame those issues to reel off a final 400m split of 22.39 seconds to get the better of her rivals by three-quarters of a length. Leader Cliff’s Edge fought on determinedly for second, with Hartnell, unable to match the instant acceleration of Mystic Journey, strong through the line for third, a further long neck away. P.B.
