Recent Up And Coming Stakes results

  • 2022: Kibou dominates his rivals in Up And Coming Stakes
Gai Waterhouse trained her sixth winner of the Up And Coming Stakes as Kibou ($3.50) used his fitness advantage to lead throughout in the Group 3 contest for three-year-olds. Ridden by Regan Bayliss, Kibou defeated Golden Mile ($16) by 2.25 lengths, with Basquiat ($4.80) a further 3.5 lengths away in third. The three-year-old son of Maurice jumped and found the lead within 200m, and from then on, he didn’t look back, as he careered away in the home straight to record his third win at his fifth career start.
  • 2021: Tiger Of Malay arrives just in time
James McDonald produces a peach of a ride to win the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes on Tiger Of Malay ($2.90). After settling on the rail behind the leaders, McDonald went for a needle eye opening on the rail to burst through and nab Coastwatch ($6.50) on the finish line, while the fast-finishing Construct ($7) rounded out the placings in third. The Michael Freedman-trained galloper went into the race first-up off an eight-week freshen, but he still carried the massive weight of 61kg to kick off his spring campaign in fine style.
  • 2020: North Pacific is the real deal
North Pacific ($1.90) jumped as an odds-on favourite in the 2020 Up And Coming Stakes and he duly saluted, winning by a massive 5.25 lengths. The Hawkes Racing-trained colt by Brazen Beau had only raced twice previously but had much too much class for his rivals. Strong finisher Bazooka ($26) ran second ahead of Marsannay ($11) to fill the minor placings. James McDonald had the raging favourite in the box seat behind the leaders until the home turn, before letting North Pacific go through his gears and run away with as dominant a win as you will see.
  • 2019: True Detective wins in the stewards room
James McDonald and True Detective may have run over the line in second place, but later on in the piece, they would claim the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes after successfully protesting the result. True Detective, who started the $2.30 favourite, defeated Superium ($8) and Lucicello ($5.50), after stewards ruled that the interference caused by Superium over the concluding stages cost True Detective the race.
