The San Domenico is run for three-year-olds under set weights and penalties conditions, with most horses that have lofty spring aspirations kicking off their three-year-old campaign in this race. Since the inaugural running of the race in 1980, the race has been run at Randwick, Warwick Farm, Rosehill and Kembla Grange. The San Domenico Stakes began as a Listed Race, but from 1986 to 2004 the race was run as a Group 2. From 2004 onwards the San Domenico has been classified as a Group 3. A number of Golden Slipper winners have returned as three-year-olds in the San Domenico and have been defeated. The last Slipper winner to return and win the San Domenico was Tierce in 1991. Notable winners of the San Domenico Stakes include Exceedance (2019), Graff (2018), Star Turn (2016), Foxwedge (2011), Gold Edition (2006), Testa Rossa (1999) and Show County (1989). 2023 San Domenico Stakes Betting Odds Markets for the 2023 San Domenico Stakes are currently unavailable. Chad Schofield said post-race that he was full of confidence, suggesting that the Annabel Neasham-trained galloper was over the odds. Schofield had this son of Deep Field in a perfect position before the home turn, and after he worked his way into the clear, Sweet Ride lengthened nicely and took off with the prize, recording an easy two-length victory over Nettuno ($6) and Swiss Exile ($15). Race favourite Best Of Bordeaux ($1.95) was trapped wide and got into a bumping duel with Spacewalk ($8.50) as they both tried to run on from the back of the field, but ultimately they were no match for the winner. 2021: In The Congo goes all the way in the San Domenico Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott took just one runner to the Kembla Grange meeting, but that didn’t stop them taking out the 2021 Group 3 San Domenico Stakes with all the way winner In The Congo ($7). Tim Clarke, who was able to lead and dictate on the Snitzel colt, held off the late closing Paulele ($1.95). Clark left nothing to chance with his front-running ride on this colt, and even though it appeared that Paulele and Captivant ($17) were going to run over the top of him with 200m to go, he kept finding and held on to record a gutsy win. 2020: Speedy Anders emerges as Everest contender Anders ($2.80) was in a league of his own, burning his rivals early and sustaining his sprint to score a commanding 3.75 length win over the previously undefeated Peltzer ($2.80) in the San Domenico Stakes. Ciaron Maher headed to Rosehill suspecting Anders might be the ace in his pack and the colt proved him right, making a one-act affair of the Group 3 contest. Golden Slipper placegetter Mamaragan ($6) was an eye-catching third after settling last. 2019: Exceedance makes a big spring statement The Hawkes Racing-trained Exceedance ($4.80) lived up to the hype to win the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill. Godolphin’s Bivouac was the $1.35 favourite for the San Domenico but in the end proved no match for the brilliance of Exceedance who had two lengths to spare on the heavy track. In a small field, Anaheed ($9) led the field around the home turn, but had Bivouac and Hugh Bowman breathing down his neck. However, once Tommy Berry pushed the button on his colt, he glided straight on by and revelled in the heavy conditions to produce one of the better wins of his career to date.
