The Lakeside track at Sandown is the destination for an eight-race card on Sunday afternoon. The Grand National Hurdle (4200m) is the feature event on a track rated a Soft 5, with the likelihood of being downgraded to a Soft 7 due to forecast rain in the lead-up. The sticks to the true position, with the action getting underway at 12:15pm AEST.

Grand National Hurdle: Coriolis

The Kathryn Durden-trained Frankenster has been beaten by the barest of margins at both of his last two starts. With just 64kg on his back and young gun Campbell Rawiller on board, he will be given every chance to see out the 4200m of the Grand National Hurdle. He went stride for stride with Count Zero at Casterton last time out when just missing, but he can turn the tables here. Look for Rawiller to have Frankenstar midfield with cover before looping his rivals to cause somewhat of an upset.

Best Bet at Sandown: Naval Academy

Naval Academy was beaten less than a length in fourth by the classy Exploring at Flemington on July 15. The third-placed runner that day, Ouroboros, has since gone on to win at Caulfield, so the form looks solid. From barrier two, Luke Campbell should have no issue in finding the lead, and with 58kg on his back following the apprentice hoop’s claim, Naval Academy should be running his rivals ragged in the opener.

Next Best at Sandown: A Votre Sante

Patrick Payne’s A Votre Sante was a dominant winner at the Echuca 2100m on July 17. The six-year-old mare put 3.25 lengths on her rivals following a sustained run and simply never looked like getting beaten once mobile. She stays at the trip and draws to gain a beautiful run in transit from barrier four under Harry Coffey. If she can gain a tow into the race at the right time, A Votre Sante will prove too hard to hold out.

Best Value at Sandown: Castillian

Kimberley Pearl made an eye-catching return at the Lakeside 1200m on July 12 when finishing fourth, and she looks a nice betting prospect on her return to the track and trip. The four-year-old mare gave her rivals too much of a start on the back of a slowly run race, so to be beaten by less than three lengths was pretty impressive. The Guava, who finished third in that race, has since come out and won. If Kimberley Pearl is near her best, it should be more than good enough for BM64 grade.
