Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted August 7, 2023 Journalists Posted August 7, 2023 In Sunday's GIII La Jolla H., Maltese Falcon (Ire) (Caravaggio) collected not only his first graded stakes victory, but it was also his first career win at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. As the 3/1 tepid favorite and carrying 118, the 3-year-old bay gelding sat a perfect ground-saving trip along the rail into the first turn and up the backstretch. As the field turned for home, Maltese Falcon held his position and with a sixteenth left he swept up for the win over Panic Alarm (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}). The final running time was 1:44.20. Lifetime Record: 7-1-2-2. O-Red Baron's Barn LLC and Rancho Temescal LLC; B-Sir Robert Ogden (Ire); T-Leonard Powell. MALTESE FALCON (IRE) ($8.40) a maiden no more after he slipped up the rail and won the $150,000 La Jolla Handicap (G3) at @DelMarRacing. @Leopowellracing trained this 3-year-gelding with @JJHernandezS19 in the irons.
