Racing returns to Newcastle on Thursday afternoon, with eight competitive races set for decision. The rail is out +7m for the entire circuit, and with some clearing days predicted on the radar, we’re expecting a significant upgrade from the Soft 7 surface currently declared. The race is set to get underway at 12:40pm AEST.

Best Bet at Newcastle: Global Empire

Placed twice out of three starts this campaign, Global Empire has produced some quality efforts without winning. The son of I Am Invincible takes a significant drop into provincial company on Thursday after racing in town, drawing ideally (2) to give jockey Rory Hutchings all the options throughout the 1200m journey. Whether he leads or takes the one-back position on the rail, this looks like Global Empire’s best chance to chalk up a much-deserved victory.

Best Bet

Race 6 – silks#2 Global Empire (2)

4yo Gelding | T: Joseph Pride | J: Rory Hutchings (59kg)

$2.40 with PlayUp

Next Best at Newcastle: Devon County

Devon County got a pass on his return from a 24-week spell at Kembla Grange on July 27. He got every conceivable chance on that occasion when storming home up the inside rail, beaten less than a half-length by Crewman. Devon County will take a lot of benefit out of that effort, and the John Sargent barn appears to have found a suitable race for the four-year-old gelding to break his maiden status.

Next Best

Race 3 – silks#1 Devon County (8)

4yo Gelding | T: John Sargent | J: Keagan Latham (60kg)

$4.00 with Dabble

Next Best at Newcastle: Silvanito

Godolphin is only sending one galloper to the races at Newcastle. Silvanito comes third-up into the preparation after a strong closing effort at Canterbury on July 26, finishing 3.5 lengths away in fifth behind Silentsar. The margin wasn’t flattering for the gelding by Shooting To Win; however, his closing splits were exceptional in a slowly run race. He should sit much closer to the speed this time, and provided they go quick enough, Silvanito should lengthen to score.

Best Value

Race 8 – silks#3 Silvanito (5)

4yo Gelding | T: James Cummings | J: Jean Van Overmeire (59kg)

$6.50 with Pendlebury Bet
