The new NT racing season kicks off in the Red Centre with the Alice Springs Turf Club hosting a five-race meeting on Saturday. A host of horses are backing up from the Darwin Cup Carnival; they’ve either returned home to Central Australia, or they’re having a final hitout in the NT before heading back south.

We last raced at Pioneer Park on July 30 and it rained the following day (0.2mm) – the first time since July 5 (0.2mm). The final heats of the Red Centre Winter Series take place this weekend before the $40,000 final on August 25. Sunny conditions and light northerly winds are forecast for Saturday, with a top temperature of 29C. The rail will be in the true position and Pioneer Park will be a good dirt surface.

BEST BET: BROAD OUTLOOK

This former NSW galloper might be stepping up in grade, but he is aiming for a fourth-straight win. The son of No Nay Never had 28 starts in NSW for four wins and six minor placings and proved highly competitive when he raced in the Hunter Region and Mid-North Coast. A first-up second over 1600m on June 18 was followed by his hat-trick over 1400m, 1600m, and 1400m. Eureka’s Victory and Valley Prince will keep him honest, but Broad Outlook is racing well and can deliver the goods.

NEXT BEST BET: SQUARE CUT

Square Cut had eight starts in Victoria for Mornington trainer John McArdle and Cranbourne conditioner Julien Welsh without posting a win. The five-year-old gelding managed a third on debut at Sandown against fellow two-year-olds in February 2021 and another third in a 1000m maiden at Yarra Valley in January. He couldn’t have started life in the NT any better, scoring a debut win over 1000m on June 4 before running second over 1100m on July 9 and again at 1200m two weeks ago. He goes up in weight but is definitely a major hope.

BEST VALUE: TOFFIATO

This guy had gone 20 starts without success before producing an impressive last-start win over 1200m a fortnight ago. A 10-year-old gelding these days, Toffiato raced in Victoria and South Australia before settling in the Red Centre in November 2018, where he’s had 53 starts for seven wins and 19 minor placings. The son of Toorak Toff ended a winning drought that stretched back to July 2021 on July 30 and was quoted at $6 during the week for this race. He is certainly in the mix if he’s at his best, despite taking on Family Ties and Boy Big – both last-start winners.
