The first Tuesday in November didn’t disappoint with Mark Zahra and Without A Fight combining to create history in the Lexus Melbourne Cup. After riding Gold Trip to a win last year, Zahra again found himself in the winner’s stall at Flemington, storming clear down the centre of the track aboard this year’s Caulfield Cup winner. Despite the wide gate, the pair were gifted a tidy ride in transit getting right back in the run, slicing their way through the pack around the 300m mark when a late gap appeared. From there, the race was over- the $8.50 pop finding the same turn of foot that saw him prevail at Caulfield only three weeks earlier. Trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman, the son of Teofilo joins elite company by becoming the first horse since Ethereal to complete the Caulfield – Melbourne Cup double. As for Zahra, the spring’s in-form hoop also became the first jockey to win back-to-back Cups on different horses since Harry White did so way back in 1979. Zahra’s decision to hop off Gold Trip in favour of his Caulfield Cup ride did raise a few eyebrows, but based on what he said after the race, it’s not hard to see why. “If I could have thought he’d have that run from the 1600m (mark) I would have said he was unbeatable,” Zahra told Channel 10. “He was an absolute gentleman today. Went to the rail, switched off, and I probably got to the front earlier than last year, but I just had that soft of a run.” Group 1 success is what every trainer strives for, but Sam Freedman said afterwards that his time spent up in Queensland really helped his star Irish stayer develop. Without A Fight won the Lord Mayors Cup and the weight-for-age Q22 out to 2200m, a pair of runs that set him up beautifully for the spring. “It was very important. He was pretty good up in Queensland, very impressive,” Freedman told racing.com. We saw that when he won over nine furlongs, and he backed that up with a Q22 run. He ran a good race in the Underwood, but QLD really set him up, he was fit and well. An older horse, we put him in the paddock for a week and he was running the fence, then we put him back in work.” After blowing the start, Soulcombe ran a huge race to grab second – his third top-five placing in three Group 1 starts this campaign. Sheraz was the other surprise in the race, following the back of Without A Fight to grab third. The Chris Waller gelding had struggled for runs in the Bart Cummings and Moonee Valley Cup leading in, but was granted all the favours in the run home despite jumping from barrier 22. Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's homebred Without A Fight (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) posted an emphatic victory in the 163rd running of the G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup just 17 days after his win in the G1 Caulfield Cup. It was back-to-back wins in the race for jockey Mark Zahra, who deserted last year's winner Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) to ride the six-year-old for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman. Formerly trained in Britain by another father-and-son team, Simon and Ed Crisford, Without A Fight joined the Freedman stable after finishing 13th in last year's Melbourne Cup. He becomes the 12th horse in history to complete the Melbourne Cup-Caulfield Cup double and is the second Melbourne Cup winner for his sire Teofilo after Cross Counter (Ire). “To the trainers' credit, he was an absolutely gentleman for me today,” said Zahra. “He just switched off and I was behind Alenquer. In front of him was Gold Trip and then Vauban and I thought 'I'm just going to stay here.' When it opened up I was on a horse with an electric turn of foot and he just pulled me all the way to the line and it was all over.” The post Without A Fight Lands the Melbourne Cup-Caulfield Cup Double appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Zac Purton returns to the mounting yard on Dublin Down after winning the Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington. (Photo by Reg Ryan/Racing Photos) Tony & Calvin McEvoy have kicked off their 2023 Melbourne Cup Day in the best possible fashion, taking out the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate for the third time in seven years, as Dublin Down (+900) got the better of his less experienced stablemate Blue Stratum (+300). The son of Exceedance had already been down the Flemington straight, when on debut in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial, and it was clear that the experience and race fitness gave him the edge on a few of his rivals, including the runner-up. The race favourite Admitted (+190) took up the lead from the barrier and appeared to be doing it well as the field got onto the course proper, but as soon as the whips began to crack, the McEvoy gallopers took over and settled down to fight out the finish. Outside of the top two, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Odinson (+380) was a real eye-catcher running home nicely into third place, suggesting that a step up to 1100m or 1200m would be ideal next start. 2023 Maribyrnong Plate Replay – Dublin Down| T: Tony & Calvin McEvoy | J: Zac Purton Both Calvin and Tony McEvoy were on track for the victory, but Calvin represented the stable and spoke post-race. “It is a job to get these two-year-olds up and going and to handle it on an occasion like today, both of our colts handled it beautifully,” McEvoy said. “We put out necks on the line (at the sales) and I think we’ve got a good system. “These are horses that are going to get better and the winner, he’s going to be a lovely horse. “A Guineas-style of horse next year. “Blue Stratum was fantastic. I saw that he hit the front and experience just got him beat. “He’s a nice horse as well. They’re different styles of horses and two we’re very happy to have in training.” With the big booking on Absurde in the Melbourne Cup to come later in the day, Zac Purton was very happy to start his day with a winner, and he spoke post race. “A little bit of race fitness and give in the track helped him,” Purton said. I always like coming back to Australia and Flemington’s such a lovely track to ride on, it’s always a pleasure to be here and Tony gave me the opportunity today. “Every time I come down he tries to throw me on something with a bit of a chance and obviously got it right today. “I think the pace through the mid stages helped, my bloke relaxed a little bit, came into it at the right time, just got a little bit lost on his own. “He got down and did his job again.” More racing news View the full article

Damien Oliver will get his fairytale, with Alenquer given the green light to run the 2023 Melbourne Cup. Damien Oliver will ride Alenquer in the 2023 Melbourne Cup, after the six-year-old passed a vets inspection early this morning. It had been feared, Oliver, who has announced his retirement from riding would not ride in the Melbourne Cup, because of a stone bruise on Alenquer’s hoof. But the six-year-old gelding was given the green light by stewards and now Oliver will be given the opportunity to add to his three Melbourne Cups. Also read: Flemington tips for Melbourne Cup day Alenquer is a $41 shot to win the Melbourne Cup with Ladbrokes, with Vauban remaining firm at around the $4.40 quote as race favourite. “The gelding had improved significantly overnight and as a result was passed suitable to race,” Stewards said in a statement. “Alenquer will also be inspected when he arrives on course as a precaution.” The 51-year-old Oliver, a record-holder with 151 victories in Group 1 races in Australia, had remained cautiously optimistic about Alenquer’s chances. “It’s just a timing thing. I spoke to the trainer this morning, and he’s quietly confident that he’ll get him there, but the next 24 hours will tell,” he said. “By the morning of the race, by scratching time, we’ll know whether he’s fit or not.” Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup will mark Oliver’s 32nd ride in the iconic event, which he has claimed three times in his illustrious career. Oliver previously triumphed in the Melbourne Cup on Doriemus in 1995, Media Puzzle in 2002, and Fiorente in 2013. View the full article
