Amerman homebred ENDLESSLY (c, 2, Oscar Performance–Dream Fuhrever, by Langfuhr) upped his perfect record to three-for-three as he made 4-5 odds look like a gift in Sunday's GIII Zuma Beach S. at Santa Anita. The bay donned cap and gown over a mile at Del Mar July 30, and returned over the same course and distance Sept. 10 to annex the GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. by another daylight margin. Getting a spin around the same trip as the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Nov. 3 this time, Endlessly settled into a midpack spot as his stablemates Ngannou (Mendelssohn) and Formidable Man (City of Light) sat first and second through a half in :46.27. The favorite began to creep closer approaching the quarter pole with Florida invader Grand Mo the First (Uncle Mo) revving up to his outside, made his move up the fence as that foe swung wide and then tipped one off the rail to overtake Ngannou while bumping with the tiring Formidable Man. Once able to fully level out, he asserted his superiority and ran up the score to some 2 1/2 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:34.52. Ngannou held second from Grand Mo the First. Jody's Pride, a 10 1/2-length debut winner in an off-turf event upstate Aug. 9, enjoyed the same surface switch here and the result was similar. Off towards the back of the pack, the dark bay quickly picked off rivals down the backside and uncorked a three-deep move around the bend to take command under her own power before a half posted in :45.93. She found no challengers from there on in, and cruised under the line a dominant victoress from last-out New York-bred stakes fourth finisher Tricky Temper. A Primera Vista, second in the Minnesota-bred Northern Lights Debutante S. at Canterbury last out, was third. “I broke a step slow and I asked her to get herself into the race from there,” said winning pilot Flavien Prat. “Once I hit the turn, she just swapped leads and naturally on her own took me there. I didn't want to take anything away that came easy.” Trainer Jorge Abreu said, “The main thing I like about her is that she relaxed a little bit today. That was my worry. When she ran the first time [going] 5 1/2 [furlongs], you know how they can be mentally, especially the fillies–they want to be a little keyed up and stuff like that. The first day we galloped her after the race, she looked like she was going to go the other way, but then she's got a pretty good, level head, that filly.” As far as what could be next, the conditioner said, “My goal is to make it to the Breeders' Cup with her. I think she's that kind of horse. [Which race] is something we have to sit down and see. We'll see how she comes out in the morning and take it from there. I would rather go a mile. A mile on the turf. My first preference is turf.” Pedigree Notes: Jody's Pride is her sire's 35th Northern Hemisphere black-type winner, and would be his 19th grade/group winner should the original grade of this race be reinstated after review. She is the 27th Northern Hemisphere stakes winner out of a Scat Daddy mare. Mackinnon, the multiple stakes-winning juvenile who was third in the 2021 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, is bred on this same American Pharoah–Scat Daddy cross. Steve Weston's Parkland Thoroughbreds and trainer Jorge Abreu also campaigned the winner's dam, who was a $250,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling and won both of her starts in turf sprints against fellow New York-breds. Jody's Song's prior foal Empathy (Uncle Mo) broke her maiden going seven furlongs on the Belmont grass in July. A half-brother to MGSW/GISP Make Mischief (Into Mischief), Jody's Song has yearling and foal full-brothers to Jody's Pride. She most recently visited Epicenter. Good Samaritan Colt Pulls off Bourbon Shocker
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in The Rest of the World
DJ Stable LLC and Cash Is King LLC's CAN GROUP (c, 2, Good Samaritan–Blue Gallina, by Street Sense) rallied from last to first at 27-1 in Sunday's GII Castle & Key Bourbon S. at Keeneland to narrowly stamp his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Last-out Sapling S. scorer Noted (Cairo Prince) came out on the wrong end of a tight photo, while Pepsi Juvenile Sprint S. winner Vote No (Divisdero) rounded out the lucrative trifecta. The winner was third in a pair of dirt sprints at Ellis to kick off his career before breaking through in visually impressive fashion going seven panels on the Kentucky Downs sod Sept. 2. He builds on a strong month-plus in Kentucky for his young sire (by Harlan's Holiday), who was also represented by the $1-million GIII Big Ass Fans Music City S. winner and $1-million Dueling Grounds Oaks runner-up on the same weekend Can Group earned his diploma. Heavily-favored NATIONS PRIDE (Teofilo {Ire}), an impressive winner last-time out in Germany, battled from a stalking position to drive past pacesetter Royal Champion (Sharmadal) in the late stages and take the GI Pattison Canadian International S. Second best nearly the entire way around, the 2-5 choice had to be asked into the lane but reeled in the leader with every stride to win going away. Lifetime Record: 14-9-2-1. Juddmonte homebred IDIOMATIC (f, 4, Curlin–Lockdown, by First Defence) continued her ascent to the top of the distaff division Sunday with a dominant and fitting front-running tally in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S., a “Win and You're In” qualifier for next month's GI Breeders' Cup Distaff. Backed at even-money to repeat rival Nest (Curlin)'s 4-5 odds, the Brad Cox trainee took clear command from the outset, doled out splits of :24.49, :48.31 and 1:12.24 and never faced an ounce of pressure all the way to the wire, which she crossed five lengths to the good. Le Da Vida (Chi) (Gemologist) was second, while Bellamore (Empire Maker) rounded out the trifecta. Nest could only mount a mild late bid and settled for fourth. The final time was 1:49.82. After methodically moving through her allowance conditions at Turfway Park at the start of the year, Idiomatic made her stakes debut a winning one in that venue's Latonia S. in March. She was a well-beaten second in Belmont's GII Ruffian S. in May before putting them back-to-back in the GIII Shawnee S. at Churchill in June and GII Delaware H. the following month. Idiomatic was last seen defeating the accomplished pair of Secret Oath (Arrogate) and Nest in a sloppy renewal of Saratoga's GI Personal Ensign S. Aug. 25. This is the second Spinster title for Juddmonte, which began sponsoring the prestigious race in 2005. Emollient (Empire Maker) carried the famed green and pink to victory here in 2013. Lifetime Record: 11-8-1-2. O/B-Juddmonte Farms Inc (Ky). T-Brad Cox. Still a maiden off a pair of seconds in turf sprints at both Ellis and Kentucky Downs, Committee of One jumped up into stakes company and rewarded his backers at 7-1 with the narrowest of wins in the Indian Summer S. Racing in the back half of the field after a bumpy beginning, the Steve Asmussen trainee stayed wide and in the clear up the backstretch run in pursuit of Riparound (Uncle Mo) through a :21.40 opening quarter. As the group fanned across the track passing the quarter pole, Committee of One produced a strong outside bid, hooked up late with Amidst Waves and dueled that rival to the line in a head-bobbing result that had to be decided by the judges. “I had a very nice trip,” said winning trainer Steve Asmussen. “I knew there was a lot of speed in the race. I was very confident with him and comfortable where he was traveling. As soon as we passed the three-eighths (pole), I asked him to pick it up, and he picked it up beautiful. Down the lane he just kept coming, and he got the job done.” The fifth stakes winner for Mendelssohn, Committee of One is out of a half-sister to MGSP Saint Vigeur (Smart Strike) and GSP Victory Way (City of Light). This is also the family of champion 2-year-old filly Sweet Catomine (Storm Cat) and MGISW Life Is Sweet (Storm Cat). The winner has a yearling Mastery half-sister and a weanling half-sister by American Pharoah. Sweetest Sound visited Girvin for 2024. by Don Rae Behind The Breeds is a new series where breeding enthusiast Don Rae takes a deep dive into the pedigree of some of today’s trotters and pacers. In today’s third edition he casts his eye on the trials in Mid Canterbury. Among a raft of blueblood qualifiers at the Ashburton trials, there were three standouts from a breeding perspective, all from the trotting ranks. Matty Williamson’s filly Majestic Lady was the first to qualify by running second in the 2YO Mobile Trot. By Majestic Son from the Holdonmyheart mare Love Hate Revenge, her grand-dam is the 9 win Gee’s Pride and her third dam is the 17 win Gee Du Jour who was in turn the sister of the dam of I Didn’t Do It who won 16 races in Australia. More directly, Majestic Lady is a half sister to Majestic Man who has in Australia alone won two Dullard Trotters Cups, an Australian Trotting Grand Prix (2240m), and the Aquagait Equine Centre Trotters Mile (1609m). In New Zealand he has won three Waikato Flying Stakes [or equivalent race name], a New Zealand 2YO Trotting Championship, and has placed umpteen times in Group races in New Zealand and Australia, having 95 starts, 24 wins, 27 seconds, 13 thirds, and lifetime earnings of $811,470. Another half brother has been Sol Invictus (11 wins). Could she be another of a seemingly endless string of fine trotters emanating from Oamaru with the Williamson name attached? Next up was the qualifying trot which saw all three starters qualify, and all of whom are bred in the purple. Lynn and Justin Smith’s 3c Shoemaker, (Father Patrick – Accumulate) who won the trial, is raced in partnership with Ms L M Fallow, and traces directly through Look via Someday to the 1963 Light Brigade mare Passive. So does the Nyhans’ 3f Knowing Me (Majestic Son – With Intent), who ran third a nose behind Michael Howard’s 2g A Reason To Fight (Father Patrick – Jaw D Nancy). (We’ll look into A Reason To Fight’s antecedents in the next article.) The dam of Shoemaker, Accumulate, who was out of Speculate out of Look, was unraced while her mother Speculate (a full sister to Some Direction and a half sister to Total Perception) won nine times and has left two winners to date including the capable Lookslikeatrooper (6 wins). The dam of Knowing Me, With Intent, who was out of Total Perception (7 wins) out of Look, was a very good mare who won 13 races for Denis Nyhan and has so far left one winner from four foals, the capable mare It’s So Easy, who races in the familiar black and white hooped Nyhan colours. The first common ancestress of both Schoemaker and Knowing Me is the 1983 Gekoj-Someday mare Look, who won nine races for Denis Nyhan. Perhaps just a hair off top-class, Look’s best finish in a Major Race was second for driver Colin de Fillipi in the 1986 New Zealand 2YO Trotting Stakes behind Rod Bowker’s Felicia. She also ran fourth in the 1987 New Zealand Trotting Derby with Mike de Fillipi driving in behind Kami, Game Nian and Bellam. She was certainly a fine juvenile but her importance is as a wonderful broodmare for breeders Mrs D A Nyhan, Mrs H H Pope and Mrs L A Smith. From 12 live foals she left 10 winners, 6 of them fillies, who won 66 races between them. Some Direction was the best with 26 victories but Speculate (9), Now Another Look (6), Perfect For Now (5) and Geeky Looking (4) were also among the good contributions to Look’s most impressive tally. Look was by Gekoj out of Someday by Light Brigade out of Passive by U Scott out of Violet Wrack by Wrack. This is a family from which breeders Denise Nyhan, Helen Pope and Lyn Smith, who are all daughters of the late Bill Doyle, have had tremendous success. (Bill bred and trained a great many winning square-gaiters from his Doyleston base.) The three daughters have collectively bred dozens and dozens of good to brilliant trotters, some of their best being noted in this article, many tracing to Passive, more on whom below, others to the U Scott mare Circlette. Someday (6 wins) included the Great Evander mare About Now (25 wins, $101,745) among her progeny. At three, About Now ran second in the New Zealand Trotting Derby and third in the Northern Trotting Derby while as an aged horse she secured an Ordeal Trotting Cup, two wins and a third in the Bank’s Peninsula Trotting Cup, two wins and a second in the Canterbury Park Trotting Cup, two seconds in the New Zealand Trotting Championship and two thirds in the Dominion Handicap. Among her contemporaries whom she raced against and sometimes beat were such great horses as Stormy Morn, Basil Dean, Sir Castleton, Hano Direct, Pointer Hanover, Alias Armbro, Scotch Tar and Tussle. Someday also left the unraced entire Some Evander whose 34 winners won 98 races and earned $389,906 in New Zealand. Lady Andelle and Roman Guy both won seven, Boy Castleton and Karina Lee won six while Some Event won five. Some Evander mares left good winners too: Andrew Eyre (14 wins) and Chiola’s Dragon (10 wins) top that list. Another Someday mare was Some Pride who won four times but more importantly was the dam of the Gee Whiz II mare Natural Glow, who won 12 times for Peter Wolfenden’s stable. She ran third, fifth and first in successive Northern Trotting Breeders Stakes from 1998 to 2000 and ran second in a Greenlane Cup off 35m behind Bold Kamwood, beaten a neck. She in turn left Extasia (9 wins) and Murcielargo (6 wins from just 20 starts) but sadly this branch of the family peters out from here on. The U Scott mare Passive won four times and left 8 winners from 10 live foals, all of whom had their share of class, some of whom were top class. When (19 wins, second 1962 Dominion Handicap, first 1962 New Zealand Trotting Free For All, first 1965 Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup, dam of 7 winners) and Asia Minor (15 wins, first 1963 New Zealand Trotting Derby and 1967 New Zealand Trotting Championship, unplaced in Interdominion Trotting Final) were the best of these. When left 7 winners including Now (8 wins) and Now Charles (6 wins), with Now going on to leave champion trotter and handy stallion Call Me Now (24 wins, $423,685, including two New Zealand Trotting Free For Alls, an Interdominion, a Dominion, an Ashburton Flying Mile, an ATC National Trot and a Cambridge Trotters Flying Mile). There are literally scores of winners featuring Passive in their pedigree and no doubt there are many more in store as her descendants breed on. Going further back, Passive’s dam Violet Wrack won six and left just three foals including Passive and another filly in Kowhai. As outlined, Passive was a champion broodmare but Kowhai didn’t do too badly either. She won four and from six live foals left four winners including Grand Charge (8 wins) and Johnny Kowhai (6 wins). Springfield Yankee (10 wins) was among Kowhai’s descendants. Returning to Some Direction, she won the 2006 Canterbury Park Trotting Cup and the 2007 Ordeal Cup for Lynn and Justin Smith while being placed a further six times in major races, always with Justin Smith in the bike. She was known as a particularly brave mare and it’s a treat to use HRNZ’s Infohorse facility to search Some Direction and use the Race Starts feature to drill down to her videos. My favourite is the 2007 Canterbury Park Trotting Cup where she works up three wide from back in the field and grabs the lead with a round to go only to be nabbed in the shadows of the post by Whatsundermykilt after fighting back when headed at the 100m. That run was a particularly brave performance which I’m sure the connections and some punters remember well albeit for different reasons. Interestingly, the stats show she did well in both spring and autumn, unlike some mares who wait until summer and autumn to show their best. Some of the family have followed that preference. Of course, several mares have been good enough in spring in November to win the Cup; Adore Me, Mainland Banner, Blossom Lady, Bonnie’s Chance, Armalight and so on… meaning one can interpret stats in many ways. Some Direction has at stud often been a shy breeder but she has managed to leave 5 winners from 8 live foals. Unfortunately, none have managed to match her class but perhaps her fillies and mares that are still racing may yet reverse that trend. Her full sister Speculate certainly did well however. She won a decent 9 races and $136,673 in stakes and counted the 2009 New Zealand Trotting Free For All among her wins. In a terrific spring of 2009, she also recorded second placings in the Ordeal Cup, the Canterbury Park Trotting Cup and the Ashburton Flying Mile. Watching the replays of these three races is like watching replays of her sister Some Direction; in the Flying Mile, she is just pipped at the post by Springbank Richard after trying to lead from go to whoa, while in the 3200m Canterbury Park Trotting Cup she takes the lead with a round to go, is headed by a horse with the better run at the 100m but fights back to go down by the barest margin on the line. In both cases she fights back when headed and cuts the margin to a whisker. Let’s hope Schoemaker is just as brave. To finish, there’s a story behind Gekoj too; in the late 1970s and early 1980s the Norwegian Captain Odbar Andersen brought out four French stallions to stand at stud: Beau Nonantais, Gekoj, Iguassou and Jet d’Emeraude as well as the Norwegian horse Inter Du Pas. Jet d’Emeraude left only 2 winners from 54 live foals, and only 4 winners were derived from his broodmares yet one of these, Paul Corkran’s superlative broodmare Nakura, became the ancestress of all the ‘Moment’ trotters, (as well as Stig – more on him below) and left the great Take A Moment (39 wins, $1,164,356). Iguassou left 15 winners including the capable Le Duc (15 wins, $86,350) who in 1988 won the New Zealand Trotting Derby and Hambletonian Classic while Beau Nonantais’ singular achievement apart from siring 8 winners seems to be leaving La Finale, who left 5 winners for the Burgesses of Leeston. Inter du Pas left one good horse, Ricky Allen’s Rua Kenana (12 wins, $100,158, including 1989 New Zealand Trotting Championship and second in 1988 Northern Trotting Derby) but unfortunately his mares didn’t amount to anything. Gekoj was the best of these European imported stallions; he stood at stud for just four seasons and left 17 winners from 83 live foals. The giant trotter David Moss was the best of these; he won $490,275 from 89 starts, 31 wins, 9 seconds, and 4 thirds. David Moss managed to win two Dominions (1993, 1994), two New Zealand Trotting Championships (1993, 1994) and the 1993 ATC Rowe Cup while also winning in Australia the Australasian Trotters Championship Final and the V.L.Dullard Cup both at Moonee Valley. Gekoj also sired Drott Moss (13 wins, $111,685) who won the 1990 Cambridge Trotters Flying Mile, placed second in the 1989 New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All and third in the 1990 Rowe Cup. Gekoj’s mares have left 27 winners of 146 races in total who have earned $1,804,035 in stakes in New Zealand alone. Among their offspring have been the marvelous Stig (22 New Zealand wins, T1:55.2 Trotting free-for-all, Dominion Handicap, National Trot, Rowe Cup/one AUS win, T1:57.2, heat Great Southern Star) and the classy Sundon mare Some Direction (26 wins, $307,804), before mentioned.. Gekoj remains at times a potent outcross presence four or five generations back in the pedigrees of a growing number of trotting horses. It will be very interesting to see how this continues to evolve in future. French blood has certainly become much more common in recent years, most notably through champion sire Love You but also through the numerous other imports secured through Haras de Trotteurs. It’s important that New Zealand breeders keep being able to access new outcrosses that are needed to continue to keep our bloodstock fresh and competitive. View the full article

Now that many of the very best horses are coming out to play we are regularly updating what’s happening at the trials right around the country. Here’s the latest installment. Pukekohe Workouts Saturday 7th October Weather Showery Track fast Merlin (3c Art Major – Imaginary Bet) In his final hit out before heading south, the class 3yo trailed stablemate Sooner The Bettor (who trailed the galloping pacemaker), both popped out at the 400m, Merlin widest of all, and the two Purdon/Phelan runners could not be separated at the line, MR:2:02.9, 800m in 57.8, 400m in 27.1 This heat was run the Addington way of going. Kiss (2f Always B Miki – Weownthenight) The Purdon/Phelan trained runner trailed stablemate Ultimate Racy Girl until the 400m then finished best (officially a head) over that runner in the straight. MR:02.3, 800m in 57.1, 400m in 27.2 Kiss has been crucified by the preferential draw in recent starts but there is no doubting her class when at her best. The other runner, Coastal Babe, trailed third and was never asked for an effort over the final stages in the hands of her trainer Steven Reid, finishing full of running at the line. All three fillies now head to Addington for the big money and all three are going to be very competitive in a very open age group. Cambridge Workouts Saturday 7th October Weather Overcast Track Fast Le Major (2g Art Major – Le Girl) Talking of those going to Addington for the big money, the Donnelly trained 2yo has been a ‘big mover’ in the last month and he had little trouble outfinishing stablemate Mr President in a MR:2:03, 800m in 57.1, 400m in 27.4 in what was just a ‘quiet run’ to keep him ticking over. He looms as a ‘major’ player in the 2yo specials coming up. Wyndham Workouts Saturday 7th October Weather Fine Track Fast Dawson (2g Sweet Lou – Speights Girl) The Stratford trained 2yo trailed throughout then got the better of the pacemaker in the last 100m. The half brother to Bubbled Up was a $35k purchase by astute trainer Graeme Anderson at the 2022 Auckland yearling sale with his ‘liking’ of the stock of Sweet Lou well known. He has gathered some high profile ‘mates’ to join him in the ownership and on this day, they saw their charge rush home in 56.2, 400m in 27.5 in an unqualified pace. The track spies would have put him straight into the black book. Da Vinci (3g Art Major – Rockin Cullen) The Ferguson trained runner (winner of 4 from just 11 starts / 3 as a 2yo) strutted his stuff in impressive fashion running his last 800m in 57.2, 400m in 27.3 to outfinish Flying Ellie by 3/4L He has always been highly regarded by his connections and throughout his career he has been pitted against quality opposition. He won’t be afraid to come to Addington and we all saw what Wagstar did to the opposition last week Flying Ellie heads to Addington this week for the 2yo fillies Harness Million race for those sold through the yearling sales and is yet to taste defeat on raceday. Manawatu trials Thursday 5th October Weather Fine Track Fast Stealer’s Wheel (2g A Rocknroll Dance – Miss Sunshine) The Doug Gale trained 2yo qualified this day all by himself MR:2:02.8, 800m in 59.9, 400m in 29.2 Noteworthy because of the solo effort, he is also a half brother to four in better than 1:55, the best being Mattgregor who won 18 in Australia, won $190k and took a time of 1:50.6. This is a family developed over a long period of time by Graham Pearson (of Under Cover Lover fame) and is the immediate family of present day ‘superstar’ Millwood Nike North Otago trials Wednesday 4th October Weather Fine Track Good Huzuni (3f A Rocknroll Dance – VC Windermere) The Matty Williamson trained runner impressed clearing out from her two rivals winning by 3L, MR:2:01.0, 800m in 58.8 (time honours for the day) Former Central Otago trainer Geoff Knight has a share in the half sister to Mufasa (10 wins mainly in Queensland) and her dam won 4. Huzuni qualified back in May and has been given time to strengthen up and that patience could be rewarded sooner than later. Winton Workouts Thursday 5th October Weather Overcast Track Good Mach’s Back (9g Mach Three – Dream Angel). The Forbes trained 9yo boomed to the front from the outside of seven and kept going too well to hold his rivals at bay MR:2:03.2, 800m in 56.5, 400m in 27.8. The winner of nine and nearly $100k was not disgraced when fourth last time behind the promising Captain Tom and he would seem to be on a ‘cushy’ rating (R55) in the deep south. He might think he is only 5 years old ! Montage (3g A Rocknroll Dance – Shamrocks) The Hunter trained runner went to the front and spent most of the heat out on his own by 5-8 lengths from his 4 rivals, looked home until Craigsyde (who ran 2nd throughout) nabbed him via the passing lane in the last 30m. MR:2:03.3, 800m in 58.4, 400m in 28.4 Interestingly, he qualified way back in January but he has real size about him and the connections have obviously been patient. Still a work in progress but one to paste away. Now that many of the very best horses are coming out to play we are regularly updating what’s happening at the trials right around the country. Here’s the latest installment. Invercargill Workouts Friday 29th September Weather Showery Track Easy Miki Knows (4g Always B Miki – Who Knows) The Douglas trained winner of three (from only 9 starts) raced third of four in indian file mostly but was back to last at the 400m peg when ‘tailender’ Joe’s Rock improved to challenge pacemaker Raklou (2yo filly), came stylishly down outer to grab those two runners but less than 1L covering the four horse field and all runners looked to have something in hand. MR:2:02.8, 800m in 58.4, 400m in 29.5 Raklou looks on target to come north to Addington for the Sires Stakes heat this coming week Miraculous (2g Bettor’s Delight – Kelly Maguire) The as yet unqualified Nathan Williamson trained, Breckon owned 2yo looked quite ‘green’ leading but was doing his best work over the final 200m in holding out his three rivals by nearly 2L, MR:2:11.2, 800m in 60.8, 400m in 29.3 Buckie Dundee (2c Net Ten Eom – Tact Ruby) paced roughly in the early stages but put in a determined run wide out on final turn to push the winner Flying Ellie (2f Art Major – Hi Ho Silver Lining) The unbeaten filly (two wins from two starts) trained by Nathan Williamson missed the start (mobile) by 5L, recovered to attach herself to the five horse trial in indian file, ran on under her own steam in the straight to finish officially 4th. MR:2:07.6, 800m in 60.3, 400m in 28.7. The weather was particularly bad for this heat and her sectionals would have been at least the equal of the winner Takeitout. ‘Ellie’ is well staked for the upcoming 2yo filly specials. Pukekohe Workouts Friday 29th September Weather Showery Track fast Merlin (3c Art Major – Imaginary Bet) The class 3yo trained by the Purdon/Phelan partnership sat third in the three horse trial then exploded around the 400m and literally ‘zoomed’ up to take control over the final stages for Zac Butcher. While obviously not race day, observers had to be impressed with his work MR: 2:03.5, 800m in 57.2, 400m in 28.3 Whispering Artist (4m Art Major – Serena’s Whisper) The Hughes trained winner of six (from only 11 starts) led her two rivals from the stand (Old Town Road raced third of three from 10m behind) and when that rival attacked inside the final 400m, kept up a strong run to be only a head away in the hands of Tony Herlihy. MR:2:07.4, 800m in 56.8, 400m in 27.6 She hasn’t started since May when she strung 4 wins together to end her last campaign. The patient connections should reap reward when asked to compete against her own sex. Bettor Knuckle Up (2c Bettor’s Delight – Bare Knuckle) The Purdon/Phelan runner trailed stablemate Duchess Megxit throughout then outfinished that runner as they came away from their three rivals from as far as 800m out. Both impressed in a MR:2:02.5, 800m in 57.5, 400m in 28.3 Bettor Knuckle Up debuted back in April for 4th and looks to have strengthened up during his spell. Mum won 8 & $106K (mostly in Australia) and took a best mile time of 1:51.5. He is her first foal. Cold Chisel (2c Always B Miki – Shezaball) In the fastest heat of the day, the Purdon/Phelan 2yo sat last of five in indian file, was still last starting the final 600m before improving through the middle for driver Zac Butcher and was seen doing his best work over the concluding stages without being extended. MR:2:00.4, 800m in 57.6, 400m in 28.6 Given time to get over a tough trip fourth in the Cambridge Sires Stakes heat, he now heads south to Addington to lock horns with the best of his age group and a potential place in the Cup day Sires Stakes final. Invercargill Trials Friday 29th September Weather Showery Track Easy Cochise (3c Father Patrick – Rae Galleon) The Ferguson trained trotter trotted solidly in front throughout and was far too good, winning by some 9L. It was a qualifying heat but he had got his ‘ticket’ back in the beginning of May. He has plenty of breeding to suggest he can win races and his 2:10.5 MR would be good enough to be competitive in most maiden trots down south. His debut is keenly awaited from a stable kicking many goals. Cambridge Trials Thursday 28th September Weather Overcast Track Good Its Nae Or Never (2f Art Major – Juice Brogden). The first foal from Juice Brogden (9 wins + $147k in stakes) was an impressive qualifier trailing two and three deep before letting loose in the home straight to power away from her two rivals, winning by 3L. MR:2:02.2, 800m in 60.8, 400m in 29.5 Trained by Nicky Chilcott, she looks to have inherited some of her dams ability on this effort and would be one to paste away for future reference. The Addington Trials Wed 27th September Weather Raining and cold and windy / Track Easy Patani (2c Father Patrick – Sagan) The Hope trained 2yo trotter trailed before improving to lead 1000m out, extended nicely last 300m and in the end 4 1/2L clear of rivals. MR:2:07.9, 800m in 61.9, 400m in 29.1. Only the two race day starts so far but did win on debut back in May then struck Wilma’s Boy when a resuming sixth, some 11L from winner. Should be further improved next up and from a stable that does well when placing its trotters. Ohara (3f Always B Miki – Paula’s On Fire ) The Howe trained filly trailed before popping out at the 400m to challenge in her qualifying heat run in trying conditions, too good for her two rivals in the straight, winning by 4L, MR:2:03.9, 800m in 62.5, 400m in 30.6. This filly comes from the immediate family of Hot N Treacherous and The Orange Agent so has a few things going for a potential race career. A Fine Patrick (2g Father Patrick – Harriet Of Mot) The Edmonds trained 2yo again showed why he is so highly regarded by his connections while the time did not set any records. Driver John Dunn bided his time back in the field before launching wide out on final bend, picked up his rivals with ease over the final stages without being extended. MR:2:14.4, 800m in 63.2, 400m in 30.6 Conditions again were not conducive to quick times but he will be at cramped odds when he makes his debut this season The Quiet Pirate (2g Captaintreacherous – Silence Is Golden) The Purdon trained 2yo broke briefly when crossing to lead just after the start but came down pacing in the hands of Mark Purdon and kept going to be way too good for his rivals MR:2:05.5, 800m in 60.4, 400m in 28.7. He was a $60k purchase at the 2022 Auckland Yearling Sales and is from the Auckland Reactor family that Purdon has had considerable success with in the past …. there must be a story behind that name ! We Walk By Faith (2g Bettor’s Delight – Wicked Nights) Another Purdon trained 2yo with plenty of breeding. He trailed mostly then used the passing lane to win in good style MR:2:03.6, 800m in 60.4, 400m in 28.7 Qualified back in June, owned by the Dunfords who have had much success with their ‘faith’ horses. Zara Tindall (3f Vincent – Royal Impression) The Robbie Holmes trained filly boomed off the gate, steadied midrace before coming home sharply, 400m in 27.8 (on an ‘off’ track) to win well She has placed four times already in just eight raceday starts including a meritorious second to the capable Treacherous Miss back in June, freshened, she should be one to follow in races restricted to Non Winners F&M. Kawhi (3g Andover Hall – Miss Lovalot) The Tom Bagrie trained runner is a full brother to the well performed Harold Smith (6 wins) and after 400m led for driver John Dunn, cleared out from the 400m and officially 8L clear of his rivals at the line. MR:2:04.9, 800m in 59.3, 400m in 29.0 Already the winner of one from 12 raceday starts and good enough to place twice as a 2yo, has not raced since May, but good enough to build upon his record at short notice. Millwood Nike (3f Captaintreacherous – Alburquerque) The star Purdon trained filly (14 starts for 14 wins) took time honours on what was quite a miserable day. She settled 4th of seven in indian file, received a nice 1×1 cart into race by a game Sweet Diamond at the 400m, not pushed to get over the top of her rivals, MR:1:59.7, 800m in 57.2, 400m in 27.2. With a number of her 3yo rivals hardened by recent racing and with the filly specials looming, one imagines that this hit out was much needed and her trainers would have been smiling post race. Her unbeaten stablemate Vessem (5 starts for 5 wins) set the pace and fought strongly when challenged to just hold second from the above mentioned Sweet Diamond and Celtic Spirit (trail) close up Piccadilly Pete (2g Sweet Lou – Piccadilly Princess) The Purvis trained 2yo is yet to qualify but proved too good for his six rivals, winning by a comfortable margin in the hands of his trainer, MR:2:08.7, 800m in 58.9, 400m in 27.8. His dam, of course, won 17 races and some $760k for the same connections and he is the first live foal from the mare. Needless to say, he looks to have inherited a fair amount of the family ability. Ashburton trials Tuesday 26th September Weather Fine Track Fast She’s Tough (6m He’s Watching – Cullen’s Mercy) The Mowbray trained mare started off 20m behind but soon trailed third of five in indian file, out to attack 400m out and kept up strong run to come away from rivals final stages MR:2:06.3, 800m in 56.8, 400m in 26.7 While a natural fast track in good fine conditions, the seven win mare put plenty of dash into her work in the hands of Matty Williamson Lime In A Bottle (2f Imperial Count – Gina) The Williamson trained 2yo raced third of four before being set alight by her trainer inside the final 600m, led around final corner, cleared out by 6L at the line MR:2:12.2, 800m in 58.7, 400m in 28.6 She qualified in early May but has yet to make her raceday debut. She is a half to some handy types including Time In A Bottle (9w and $101k) The Vixen (3f Always B Miki – Pocket Of Jewels) High strike rate trainer Laurence Hanrahan produced a handy qualifier in the hands of Rick May, soon led and kept going too well for her rivals, 3 1/2L clear at the line MR:2:06.7, 800m in 58.0, 400m in 28.4 The filly has a bit of breeding behind her and the ‘Miki’ fillies have proven good racehorses, one to watch when the astute trainer elects to take her to the races. Wyndham Workouts Sunday September 24 Weather Fine Track Fast Cormac Leo (3g Sweet Lou – Athena Matai) The Craig Ferguson trained 3yo settled third off five in indian file before improving midrace to take control and kept going strongly to win impressively, last 800m in 55.6, 400m in 27.5 Taken all the way to Addington for his debut where he duly won earlier in the season and then placed fifth in the Group 2 Southern Supremacy at his last start back in April (from only four race day starts), he looks to have come back stronger this time in and will be one to follow in the coming weeks Pukekohe Workouts Saturday September 23 Weather Overcast Track Good Chimichurri (4h Bettor’s Delight – Saucycullen) The Telfer trained entire missed away from the 2500m stand but quickly recovered to assume control after 600m from Bolt For Brilliance (T) who had stepped nicely. Kept up a strong run to hold out Old Town Road. The latter settled last of five then took the short way home inside the final 600m, was giving leader 4L at 400m and got within a neck at the line. Winners last 800m in 58.1, 400m in 27.1 Bolt For Brilliance sprinted sharply from the trail to be a 1/2L away in third and trainer Tony Herlihy would have been super happy with the effort against open class pacers Yourdoinamazinsweety (2g Sunshine Beach – Alesandra Ambrosio) The Herlihy trained 2yo raced last of five before improving to sit parked last 800m, fought strongly for his third, less then 1L from winner Lenny Lincoln who trailed then came along inner to just get up. MR:2:04.7, 800m in 59.7, 400m in 27.7 He won a heat of the Young Guns earlier in the season but being a big type he has been given time and should show the benefit from the patient approach once he reappears on raceday Minjee (2f Bettor’s Delight – Western Confidential) The Hollis/Robertson filly only had one rival but showed plenty of dash after leading throughout and coming clear by some 5L, running her last 400m in 28.3.Her breeding would suggest she will just get better as she gains further experience. One to paste away. The McGowan stable produced 3 workout winners who all showed enough to be followed when they resume. Lucky Mum (2f Father Patrick – Girls On Film) Already placed behind The Moonstone earlier in the season, she trailed against her two rivals then showed plenty of dash to clear out by 5 1/2L, 800m in 62.7, 400m in 29.3 Castana (3g Quaker Jet – Rosemaryz Luck) Already the winner of two from nine starts, he trailed last of four before improving to lead 600m out, he cleared out in the straight to win impressively, last 800m in 60.3, 400m in 28.4 Broken Promise (5g Sweet Lou – On A Promise) Settled third of five in indian file before improving to sit parked inside final lap, kept going strongly to win well, MR:2:05.1, 800m in 57.9, 400m in 28.1. The trainers must have some faith in him as he has raced only 5 times over 2 seasons and now nearly 6yo! Cambridge Workouts Saturday September 23 Weather Overcast Track Slushy Diamonds Are Forever (3f Always B Miki – Three Jewels) The Neal trained filly was good enough to place behind Millwood Nike at Group 1 level earlier in the season. In this trial she trailed throughout, elected to come out on the home turn and without too much effort finished best over her 3 rivals. MR:2:03.3, 800m in 58.8, 400m in 28.6 She would have have derived much benefit from the outing as she prepares to take on the best 3yo fillies in the coming weeks The Rangiora Trials Wed September 20 (Weather Fine but windy / Track Fast) Tinkerbelle (2f What The Hill – Belle Galleon) The Mark Jones trained half sister to top trotter Stent led and then did enough to hold out Bounce N Beyond with 24L to the rest. MR:2.10, 800m in 60.1, 400m in 28.6. The latter was good enough to beat Wilma’s Boy in a recent Rangiora trial and that runner came out and won a 2yo trot by 9L at Addington on the 15th September. Tinkerbelle qualified way back in early March where she dead-heated with High Step, now winning in Australia for her connections at Group level. All these references add up to her being a major player in the upcoming 2yo specials. Its fair to say that the current crop of 2yo trotters is collectively one of the strongest ever ! Heart Throb (3c Sweet Lou – Justalittlebettor ) The Bob Butt trained colt was highlighted in this forum recently and put in another eye catching trials performance behind the explosive Rakero Rocket (another to be highlighted previously). The latter left a trailing spot a lap out to take control then turned the race into a procession winning officially by 18L, last 800m in 55.5, 400m in 26.8. Heart Throb was only officially fifth but was last and some 15L from the runaway pacemaker at the 250m, brought to the outside, he made up many lengths to be in a photo for the minor placings, under little urging from his trainer/driver. Masterly (4g Love You – Brilliant) Formerly with Paul Nairn (4 wins from 14 starts) but now with part owner Bob Butt, the Love You gelding stepped beautifully and was soon in front then had little trouble holding his rivals at ‘arms length’, MR:2:08.7, 800m in 59.5, 400m in 29.4 Remembering he won the 3yo Sires Stakes championship at Alex Park by nearly 7L at Group 2 level and competed at Group 1 level against the best of his age, this fellow has a touch of class and with another year on him, could be a big mover amongst the Canterbury trotters. Krug (5h Bettor’s Delight – Champagne Princess) The Dalgety trained runner began well off 40m (2600m) to tag on to a four horse heat (Sweet Diamond made a mess of the stand and took no part in the trial) before being asked to improve a lap out, unfortunately pacemaker Celtic Spirit elected not to hand up and Krug was forced to race parked for the final 1200m, On a quick half (800m) in 56.5, MR 2:03 (off the front mark), he fought on strongly to be 2L from the pacemaker/winner and now after 2 trials, he looks primed for his raceday resumption at Addington next week. Lets remember that Krug at his best is a sub 1:50 miler ! Borrisokane (3g Sportswriter – Tristar Brigade) The Regan Todd trained 3yo has won two from 10 raceday starts and on this day ran 3rd in the R50 & faster trial, 1L from winner but when the winner is Akuta and the runner up Self Assured, last 800m in 56.8, 400m in 27.8, one takes notice especially as he was making ground solidly over the final stages under his own steam. The stable keeps kicking goals and this bloke did run a sub 1:55 mile earlier in year at Wyndham and former trainer Bruce Negus thought enough of him as a 2yo to debut in the Group 2 Sapling Stakes. Not to be underestimated wherever he travels in the coming weeks. Akuta led and was too good but Self Assured caught the eye coming on stylishly in the straight and was not pushed to get within a length of the winner. Posh Painter (2f Terror To Love – Hanover Glory) The Robbie Close trainer filly raced 4th in indian file before improving to lead 600m out and kept giving to win nicely, last 800m in 57.8, 400m in 28.5. The head wind was quite strong down the back at this time and this qualifying effort looked full of merit. The trainer also has a share in this one. Winton Workouts Thursday 14th September (Weather Fine Track Fast) Raklou (2f Sweet Lou – Raksbet) The smart 2yo, a winner of three from just four starts, was back from her spell running fourth in behind Captain Tom (R35 to R66 pace) who led over the final lap and stayed on too well for his rivals in a 2:03.4MR, 800m in 59.0, 400m in 28.6. Raklou was not pulled out in the run home by trainer Peter Hunter after racing back in the six-horse field and looked to have more to give. Based on what she showed in her first campaign, she will be ultra competitive in the 2yo filly specials coming up over the next few months. Mallory Maquire (2f Art Major – Miranda Maguire) Trained by Alister Black, the unqualified filly raced in a learners heat but it was the way she finished that suggested she might have a future when she gets to the races. ‘Mallory’ trailed early but lost her place as a couple of runners went rough in the running, well back starting the last 500m, she came very wide on final turn then collared the leader in the final 50m under her own steam for young driver Riley Black. 800m in 59.6, 400m in 30.3 She is a 3rd foal half sister to a nice maiden in Lewey Maguire (trained by Telfers) and Sonny Maguire now the winner of three in Queensland. Pukekohe Workouts Friday 14th September (Weather Showery Track Slushy) The Surfer (2g Downbytheseaside – Styx On) Another of the Telfer 2yo fillies Seafield Rose in the hands of Alicia Harrison sped out to lead and kept going too well for her rivals, nearly 3L to the good at the line. 800m in 58.2, 400m in 28.4 The only runner to make any headway over the final 600m was the Donnelly trained The Surfer (3rd) who made up good ground from well back for driver David Butcher. He also qualified back in April where he ran a 2:02MR at Cambridge and has some quality breeding behind him as well. Wyndham Workouts Saturday 16th September (Weather Fine Track Fast) Falcon’s Watch (4g He’s Watching – Touch Of Rose) The Ross Wilson-trained one race winner trailed three deep mostly before mounting a challenge around the final bend and was able to finish strongly and clear of his rivals at the business end, cutting the 2400 mobile out in a 2:02.8MR, last 800m in 57.2, 400m in 28.8. Formerly trained by Nicky Chilcott where he was a winner at Alexandra Park, he has been given a good spell and this run suggested he could turn the poor formline around at short notice. Motukarara Workouts Saturday 16th September Weather Overcast Track Firm (Grass track) Quinn (2g Downbytheseaside – Vengance) Word is that trainer Bruce Negus thinks a lot of Quinn and it was the trainer who hopped in the cart to steer his charge to an impressive win over 3 rivals, last 800m in 61.0, 400m in 27.0 He qualified way back in April at Ashburton but has been given plenty of time to fill into his frame by the astute horseman. He is definitely one to paste away as we wait for that raceday debut. View the full article

By Jonny Turner Sarah O’Reilly enjoyed one of her biggest days in harness racing when she won her fourth New Zealand Junior Drivers Championship and bagged a Group 3 Methven Cup victory with American Me. As a two-time national junior drivers premiership winner with feature wins to her name, O’Reilly had already had more than her share of highlights in the sport. But winning a Methven Cup ramped up an already incredible day. The junior driver has dreamed of winning Methven’s biggest race and on Sunday that dream came true. “I have always wanted to win the Methven Cup since I was a little kid, just because my family has done well in it before and I love the Methven track,” O’Reilly said. “I have grown up there and I basically learned to drive on the track.” O’Reilly had a plan to find a run on the pegs for American Me and she pulled that plan off to perfection before angling her charge off the inner at the 800m and then letting him down for his winning run. “He has probably just been a bit unlucky at Addington lately,” O’Reilly said, “but today he was off the front row and he took advantage of that.” “I thought getting down to the markers and getting a nice run was going to be the key to the race and it worked out really well.” O’Reilly’s Methven Cup win came after she had already sealed her fourth win in the New Zealand Junior Drivers Championship when Kennedy finished fourth in the sixth and final heat. That gave her 69 points, five ahead of nearest rival Zev Meredith. The championships started at Addington on Thursday night, before heading to Invercargill and then finishing at Methven. The reinswoman admitted she was lost for words to describe her incredible day at Methven. “I don’t know what to say really, it is quite amazing.” O’Reilly also admitted she wasn’t totally sure why she has been so successful in the New Zealand Junior Drivers Championship, but it is clear that that success is no fluke. And the extensive travel she has done in recent seasons, jumping behind unfamiliar horses in the process, has to be an asset. “With all the travelling I have done, it is definitely a help.” “You don’t get nervous, you just do what you have got to do and you don’t get worried about driving horses for the first time.” O’Reilly’s big day at Methven comes less than three months before the end of her outstanding tenure as a junior driver. She’s on track to win a third national junior drivers’ premiership at the end of December. “I couldn’t be going any better really, so hopefully I can keep it going until the end of the year.” O’Reilly could live another dream before she loses her junior tag. How far American Me moves up the rankings for the New Zealand Cup following his Methven Cup win and in his subsequent starts will determine whether the Brent and Tim White trained pacer makes the New Zealand Cup field. “We might be a bit far down the list, but it would be amazing if he was able to make it into the cup.” “Brent and Tim have done a super job with him, they have him looking great and feeling great and he is just a really happy horse.” View the full article

The trip might have been unusual, but rider Javier Castellano knew what he had under him as Fev Rover (Ire) (m, 5, Gutalfan {Ire}—Laurelita {Ire}, by High Chaparral {Ire}) captured Sunday's GI E.P. Taylor S. at Woodbine. The bay showed the way early as 50-1 Rocky Sky (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) pressured to her outside through fractions of :25.66 and :50.29. Just after the half-mile mark, Fev Rover let Rocky Sky go and dropped back to third for approximately three furlongs, only to come on again on the turn. Despite keeping her wrong lead, she held off all comers and powered home by 2 1/2 lengths, completing the 10 furlongs in 2:04.40. Favored Charlie Appleby trainee, Godolphin homebred, and MGSW/MGISP With The Moonlight (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) was second, while last year's Queen's Plate winner Moira (Ghostzapper) was third. Moira had beaten Fev Rover in their respective last outs, the GII Canadian S. Sept. 9. Fev Rover was adding her second Grade I score following a win over Gina Romantica (Into Mischief), who won Saturday's GI First Lady S. at Keeneland, in the GI Beverly D. S. Aug. 12 at Colonial Downs. O-Tracy Farmer; B-Manister House Stud (Ire); T-Mark Casse; J-Javier Castellano. #1 FEV ROVER (IRE) ($10.10) led early and was passed on the turn, but rebroke in the stretch to win @WoodbineTB's GI $750,000 E. P. Taylor Stakes! This is the second top-level success for the 5yo mare, who was ridden by @jjcjockey for @markecasse and Tracy Farmer. pic.twitter.com/wUVZdypQTD — TVG (@TVG) October 8, 2023 The post Tracy Farmer’s Fev Rover Bests Them All in E.P. Up to the Mark (Not This Time) and Master of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who finished noses apart in Saturday's GI Coolmore Turf Mile, both exited the race in good order, according to their connections. “He [Charlie Appleby] usually likes to let the dust settle a couple days after the race and then decide,” traveling lad Chris Connett said. Following the race Saturday, Appleby indicated Master of The Seas could return to Europe Tuesday or Wednesday or possibly stay here if a Breeders' Cup run is in the cards. Trainer Todd Pletcher is finalizing travel plans for his Breeders' Cup contingent that likely will include in addition to Up to the Mark, GI Darley Alcibiades winner Candied (Candy Ride {Arg}) along with GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Locked (Gun Runner). Meanwhile, Baldo Hernandez, assistant to Chad Brown, reported the trainer's three runners from Saturday's GI First Lady S. exited the race in good order with immediate plans to be determined. Brown did not commit to a next start for GI Champagne runner up General Partner (Speightstown). “I want to see how he trains a little bit, and see if we want to try two turns now in the Breeders' Cup or wait until next year,” Brown said. “At some point I will try him two turns, he relaxes nicely. He gives me the feeling that he would be able to do it, but we'll have to see if he'll be in the Breeders' Cup or not.” The Champagne winner, 'TDN Rising Star' Timberlake (Into Mischief), is likely bound for the Breeders' Cup. “He came back really good,” said Dustin Dugas, assistant to Brad Cox. “He cooled out really good. He heads back to Kentucky today. I was very happy with the way he won and Florent was happy, too. He's just a cool dude. It seems like he's one that can stretch out for sure.” Bill Mott's War Like Goddess (English Channel) and Just F Y I (Justify) both returned from their respective wins in good order. At Santa Anita, trainer Bob Baffert reported Muth (Good Magic) and Wine Me Up (Vino Rosso), the one-two finishers in Saturday's GI American Pharoah for 2-year-olds, were both doing well Sunday morning. The same was said by Mark Glatt of Chatalas (Gun Runner), winner of Saturday's GII Chandelier at 1 1/16 miles for 2-year-old fillies. Both Muth and Wine Me Up will both be pointed to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. “I don't like to look too far ahead until I see them work back, but that's the plan for now,” Baffert said. As for Chatalas: “She's in good shape,” Glatt said. “Things worked out for her yesterday. We always thought she'd be better at two turns, but I don't believe it until I see it. She proved what we thought.” The post Saturday Stakes Runners All Exit In Good Order appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. Flashy and exciting New Jersey-bred Book'em Danno took his talents out of his home state Sunday to remain unbeaten in the rained-off Futurity S., which originally carried Grade III status as well as a “Win and You're In” berth to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint before the surface change. The Breeders' Cup will conduct a review of the race Monday to determine if an automatic invitation will be extended to the winner. A 9 1/2-length debut romper against fellow state-breds at Monmouth Aug. 12, the dark bay gelding led home a 1-2-3 for NJ-breds in the open Smoke Glacken S. Sept. 9. He was further flattered when runner-up Sea Streak (Sea Wizard) ventured to Ozone Park last weekend to best a salty group of local maidens, and loomed very large here when the turf question was taken out of the equation. Away a touch awkwardly from his outside draw, Book'em Danno sat perched out wide and within striking distance as Works for Me posted splits of :22.09 and :45.27. The chalk ranged up ominously entering the straight, leveled off and widened at will. “He broke well and I had a good trip. Two horses went to the front and I was just stalking them from off the pace. When I asked him to go, he responded very well,” said winning pilot Jose Ortiz, fresh off a pair of Grade I scores Saturday at Keeneland. “I rode him like much the best and he was much the best. I worked him in the morning and he showed in the morning that he's a good horse. I was very confident. I got a great post today and he just responded very well for me when I asked him. He's a nice horse.” Despite Book'em Danno's success so far sprinting, as well as his sire's, trainer Derek Ryan said his trainee should stretch out: “He'll go as far as I want him to go. I had a horse a few years ago–[MGSW and 2009 GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S. runner-up] Musket Man (Yonaguska)–and everyone told me [about stretching out], 'he's six furlongs, he can't do that.' You train them to do whatever you want.” As for trying the one-mile Nashua S. Nov. 5, Ryan said, “We'll see what we're going to do with him. We might try the Nashua, but I don't like to over-run a young 2-year-old. Next year is a long year. I might be tempted to go a little farther, who knows.” Pedigree Notes: Book'em Danno is one of three black-type winners for his young sire (by Kantharos), and will be his first graded stakes winner should the American Graded Stakes Committee reinstate the race's original grade. It was a very productive week for the winner's dam Adorabella, whose yearling colt by Classic Empire topped the first session of Fasig-Tipton's Midlantic Fall Yearlings sale. Read more here.
