  1. Blitzburg winning the 2025 Group 3 Canonbury Stakes. Photo: Bradleyphotos.com.au The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Blitzburg ($4.80) has claimed a dominant victory in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, with Tyler Schiller making every post a winner aboard the son of Snitzel in the two-year-old feature. The pair pinged the lids from barrier two and never looked in any danger of fending off his fellow colts and geldings, producing a slashing turn-of-speed to take full advantage of on-speed track conditions. The favoured pair of Burma Star ($2.50) and Tropic ($3.80) both got perfect runs in behind the speed, however, both appeared to be flat-footed when asked for the ultimate effort turning for home. The Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald-trained first starters, Hillier ($18.00) and Peleus ($15.00), both hit the line well to be potential black bookers for the future, filling out the minor money and putting some value in the exotics with horse racing bookmakers. It was all about the winner in the end, however, with Blitzburg pressing clear to assert himself as a potential Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) contender in the autumn. Click here for full Rosehill race replays. Gerald Ryan was on course at Rosehill to break down the win but suggested the Golden Slipper may be a bridge too far for the talented two-year-old. “I’ve been very confident with him since he came home from Queensland,” Ryan said. “He wasn’t right up there, I wasn’t happy with him. I spoke to the stewards about him. They couldn’t scratch him because he was second emergency and he ended up not getting a run and I treated him, so when they changed it to Friday night, I couldn’t run him anyway as it was within seven days. “So they let me scratch him and we brought him home and since he’s been home, he hasn’t missed a beat. “He’s only two once and we’ll just see where he ends up but the Black Opal might be his go. We’ll just pick our races with him and if he’s flying at Slipper time, yeah we would perhaps go there but at the moment I don’t think he’s a Slipper horse.” Tyler Schiller was delighted with the performance and suggested the step back to 1100m suited the lightly raced colt. “He’s not the best looking colt,” said Schiller. “He’s nice and compact, but he’s just not very big and strong, but he’s got a big motor and he tries hard, which is the main thing. “He jumped out very sharply, I thought he travelled a lot better in the winkers. It helped me just get him to be on the bridle instead of chasing him, and probably 1100m made a little bit of a difference too.” If connections do elect to head towards the 2025 Golden Slipper, Blitzburg is currently a $34.00 chance with Neds. 3. Return To Conquer (inside) keeps his perfect record intact in the Colin Jillings 2YO Classic. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Te Akau Racing’s million-dollar colt Return To Conquer delivered again in Saturday’s Group 3 Colin Jillings 2YO Classic (1200m) at Ellerslie, improving his unblemished record to four trials and two raceday appearances. The son of Snitzel was bought by David Ellis for $1.3 million as a yearling on the Gold Coast in January of last year. He built up plenty of pre-debut hype with three impressive trial wins between August and October, then romped to victory by two and a half lengths as a $1.20 favourite in the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe on November 23. The third placegetter in that race, Vega For Luck, went on to finish second in last Saturday’s Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m). Trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson held Return To Conquer back from the races for the next 10 weeks, keeping him up to the mark with a trial win against older horses over 1000m at Matamata on January 14. Saturday’s $120,000 Colin Jillings Classic marked his eagerly anticipated return to action, and Return To Conquer lived up to his red-hot $1.20 favouritism with horse racing betting sites again. The early part of the race did not go to plan for the boom colt and his jockey Wiremu Pinn, who found themselves posted three wide without cover after the first 200m. Pinn had no choice but to press forward, sliding up alongside the front-running Cashla Bay coming up to the 800m mark. Return To Conquer cruised past Cashla Bay and took command early in the run home. First-start fillies Tajana and Vittoria quickened well in the straight and ate into the margin, but Return To Conquer still had half a length up his sleeve as he crossed the finish line with his ears pricked. 2025 Group 3 Colin Jillings 2YO Classic Replay – Return To Conquer https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Ellerslie-2025-Group-3-Colin-Jillings-2YO-Classic-01022025-Return-To-Conquer-Mark-Walker-Sam-Bergerson-Wiremu-Pinn.mp4 “He’s just a very good horse,” Pinn said. “David’s one of the best judges in New Zealand, and I think he’ll get every cent back from the A$1.3 million he paid for this colt. “The team wanted this to be a learning experience today. He jumped a length in front of them, but I tried to pull him back from there and get a bit of cover. There wasn’t anywhere I could get in, so I decided to slide back up outside the leader. I probably should have made that decision a little bit sooner. “But he relaxed really nicely and kicked well. I think he would have found a fair bit more if someone had really challenged him.” Raced by the Te Akau 2024 Stallion Breeding Syndicate, Return To Conquer has now had two starts for two black-type wins and has banked $132,250. “It didn’t all go his way today,” Bergerson said. “He went back, then had to go forward again. It looked like he loafed around a little bit when he got to the front in the straight. “He’s a lovely horse going forward. Fair play to David, going out and buying these types of colts on spec. It’s not cheap. “But he’s a beautiful animal who has it all in front of him. He’ll take plenty of improvement from this and will strip a lot fitter next time.” Horse racing bookmakers now rate Return To Conquer a $2.50 favourite for the Group 1 Sistema Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on March 8. Bergerson mentioned the $550,000 feature as a potential target, with a likely lead-up run in the Group 3 Matamata Slipper (1200m) on his home track on February 15. However, there is also a possibility he could venture across the Tasman. “There’s options like the colts’ race at Matamata and then the Sistema, or he could even head across to Australia,” Bergerson said. “We’ll see how he pulls up from this and then have a good team talk with Mark and David and take it from there.” Saturday’s 2YO Classic was formerly run at New Plymouth, but was this year relocated to Ellerslie and named in honour of Colin Jillings. The Hall of Fame horseman, who died in 2022 at the age of 91, played a key role in David Ellis and Mark Walker’s career development. “It’s such an honour to win the first running of an event which has been named after a true legend,” Ellis said. “Colin was one of my very best, life-long friends. I greatly treasured his advice, loyalty, wisdom and friendship over many decades from the time he met me as a young man. In fact, he actually introduced Karyn (Fenton-Ellis) and me at the Trentham races. “Mark also looked up to Colin, who always freely shared his training expertise and experience with him.” Horse racing news View the full article

  6. By Michael Guerin Showmethetanlines was more than just a super impressive debut winner at Addington on Friday night. He was living proof of the money that can be made by getting on the front foot with early season two-year-old racing. The first two-year-old race of the season saw trainer Ross Houghton provide the trifecta, two them owned by Dancingonmoonlight Farm, where he trains his horses. The winner was way, way too good, bolting in by four lengths with a 57.9 second last 800m to suggest this won’t be his last win. But it is already worth way more than the winning stake as Robert Famularo, who owns Dancingonmoonlight Farms, gets $12,000 worth of bonuses for both breeding and owning Showmethetanlines. “When you look at the bonuses these two-year-olds get it makes sense to have them going early when plenty of other stables don’t have them racing,” says Houghton. “The bonuses are a great initiative and shows how keen HRNZ and Entain are to get two-year-old racing up and going earlier.” Houghton says while the winner is good he expects third placed Burt to be an improver next time they race. “He is a couple of weeks behind the other two and it sounds like Addington are keen to programme a two-year-old race every second week so these horses will get their chances.” Houghton says he has four more two-year-olds to join Friday night’s trio next month so he could be the new early season king of the babies. “I really enjoy the young horses and there has never been a better time to train them.” Houghton’s trifecta was the performance of the night but there was plenty to like about the win of Next Level in the main pace. Trainer Steven Reid had told HRNZ readers Next Level could be a run short but the sharp four-year-old was still too good for his rivals, driver Blair Orange staying out of the early burn before heading forward and wresting control of the race. Later in the night debutant three-year-old Crunch Time looked a smart horse when he won courtesy of a 27.8 second last 400m for trainer Hayden Cullen. View the full article
  7. It’s two months to Cambridge’s Night of Champions – and already the night is shaping up as a trans-Tasman classic. The slot holders for both the $1m Race by betcha and the $600,000 TAB Trot on Friday, April 4 were released last night. While the final make up of the races will depend on form and availability the two races will feature the best pacers and trotters from Australasia. The Race is likely to feature the likes of Leap To Fame, Merlin and Republican Party while Inter Dominion champion The Locomotive, Muscle Mountain and Oscar Bonavena are all set to be among the starters for the Trot. 2025 will be the fourth edition of The Race, with the previous winners being Merlin, Copy That and Self Assured while last year’s TAB Trot was taken out by all conquering Australian Just Believe. It’s something we want and really need to do with him. “We’re in no rush to retire him, but he’s six now and this could be his last full season of racing. He’s right in his prime and it’s a great race for him.” It would also add significantly to Leap To Fame’s stallion value if he could an NZ major to the 11 Group 1 races he has so far won in Australia. “Having been to NZ Cup Week and seen the passion the New Zealanders have for harness racing and great horses, we’re excited at the prospect of showing them our champion in the flesh. “He’s given Kay (Seymour’s wife) and the most amazing ride. He’s the horse we’ve waited 50 years in this great game to find.” Any enquiries to dave@cambridgeraceway.co.nz, or by calling Dave on 027 202 7778. View the full article
  8. My Wish gives Luke Ferraris his most important Hong Kong win. Photo: HKJC Bristling with emotion, Luke Ferraris has jubilated in My Wish’s Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) triumph for trainer Mark Newnham at Sha Tin on Friday, prompting the young South African to reflect on Sweet Orange’s success in the same race in 2012. Trained by Ferraris’ father David, Sweet Orange’s victory 13 seasons ago remains one of Ferraris’ most vivid memories from his childhood in Hong Kong. Now 23, Ferraris joined his father – who saddled 461 winners in Hong Kong and trained champion Vengeance Of Rain – on the Hong Kong Classic Mile honour board with a perfectly judged ride to fend off Francis Lui-trained pair Divano (Blake Shinn) and Parking Hermod (Zac Purton) in 1:33.98. Jumping away cleanly from barrier eight, Ferraris settled the Flying Artie gelding in fourth place, one off the fence and, approaching the home turn, angled into clear running before staving off a charging Divano, who rocketed from last on the turn in a race-best sectional of 21.98s. 2025 Hong Kong Classic Mile Replay – My Wish https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sha-Tin-2025-Hong-Kong-Classic-Mile-31012025-My-Wish-Mark-Newnham-Luke-Ferraris.mp4 Reflecting on Sweet Orange’s victory under Weichong Marwing, Ferraris said: “I remember it like it was yesterday. Weichong was three-deep without cover the whole way, loomed up on the bend and fought off Fay Fay at the furlong (200m). “There were a few flashbacks which entered my mind today when he (My Wish) had to get game at the furlong and he did. He is 990 pounds of pure heart and he hasn’t been the easiest customer, so big credit to Mark and his team. It really shows the calibre of trainer he is. He improved with each and every run and it’s good to get one on the board. “Tonight, when I sit down it will kick in when I get the messages from my family. Watching this race as a child and now this – it’s surreal. I’m pretty grateful to Mark and his team.” With his fourth win from eight starts, My Wish gave Ferraris and Newnham their most important success in Hong Kong and the first leg of the HK$52 million Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which continues with the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) on March 2 and the HK$26 million Hong Kong Derby (2000) on March 23. Newnham was elated to have overcome My Wish’s appetite and temperament issues as the smallest horse in the field held sway. “His appetite’s improved, so as he’s raced on through the season, he’s toughened up a little bit. We all know he’s only a small horse, but gee he’s got a big heart,” Newnham said. “The horse is very game, Luke’s done a great job with him and my team at home has done a super job because when he first arrived, he was a high-energy horse and wasn’t easy to handle. “He has been troublesome at times, but today he paraded better than he ever has, he went to the start nice and settled and once he got into that position, it was just a matter of whether he was going to be good enough or not. “The way he raced today and the position he put himself in and the way he settled, I think he’ll give himself every chance (over 1800m). If he learns to settle and conserve his energy, he’s going to be hard to beat. It’s pretty special.” Horse racing news View the full article
  9. Chancheng Glory becomes a Group 3 winner. Photo: HKJC Chancheng Glory (130lb) posted the biggest win of his career on Friday afternoon in the HK$4.2 million Group 3 Centenary Vase Handicap (1800m) at Sha Tin. Placed at Group 2 and Group 3 level before Friday, Mor Spirit gelding Chancheng Glory was tenacious from barrier nine in denying Winning Dragon (115lb) and Ensued (125lb) at odds of +600 with , clocking a time of 1:46.67 under Hugh Bowman for trainer Francis Lui. “I was fortunate to get the opportunity to ride him. I get limited opportunities in these races with the weight conditions but it is what it is. I thought his run last start had a lot of merit against the highest quality of horses,” Bowman said. “Today when he jumped out well and travelled – I was always very confident. He was aided by a nice genuine speed set by Sword Point and his class showed over the final two furlongs.” Sword Point (131lb) led the race until the 250m mark. Chancheng Glory raced in second throughout the contest before denying Winning Dragon by three quarters of length. 2025 Group 3 Centenary Vase Handicap – Chancheng Glory https://horsebetting.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Sha-Tin-2025-Group-3-Centenary-Vase-31012025-Chancheng-Glory-Francis-Lui-Hugh-Bowman.mp4 Bred in the American state of Iowa, Chancheng Glory led home a first three for the Americas. The two-time Group 1 winning Winning Dragon hails from Chile, while Ensued is an American foaled son of the late Lemon Drop Kid. Chancheng Glory is now an eight-time winner from 23 starts, boasting earnings of HK$19.66 million for his connections the Chancheng Racing Syndicate. The five-year-old placed second behind Galaxy Patch last term in the HK$4.2 million Group 3 Lion Rock Trophy Handicap (1600m) by a nose. “He’s a Group 2 and Group 3 handicap horse, of course, if it is a Group 1 then maybe on his day. He’s (Hugh Bowman) a top jockey. I don’t have any worry about him,” Lui said. Friday’s success is Chancheng Glory’s first this season. He came into the event following consecutive sixth placings in December’s HK$36 million Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) and January’s HK$13 million Group 1 Stewards’ Cup (1600m). Lui will plot a path towards the HK$24 million Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) on April 27 at Sha Tin for Chancheng Glory. The trainer won the FWD Champions Mile in 2021, 2022 and 2023 with champion Golden Sixty. Chancheng Glory will also take aim at the HK$13 million Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin on February 23, the second leg of Hong Kong’s Triple Crown, says Lui: “I think he’ll go for the Gold Cup, 2000 (metres) suits him better than 1400 so he’ll go for that.” Bowman won the 2023 Centenary Vase with Senor Toba, while Lui previously scored in 2021 with Glorious Dragon. 18. Last year's recently crowned 2-year-old champion Citizen Bull (Into Mischief) will kick off his 2025 season in the GIII Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, one of three GI Kentucky Derby preps on tap Saturday. The 2024 GI FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner will take on just four rivals, including a pair of Bob Baffert-trained stablemates and last-out maiden winners–'TDN Rising Star' Rodriguez (Authentic) and the rail-drawn Madaket Road (Quality Road). Rodriguez romped in his two-turn debut at second asking at Santa Anita Jan. 4, good for a field-best 101 Beyer Speed Figure. Madaket Road, second on debut in the GIII Bob Hope Stakes Nov. 17, went one better cutting back to six furlongs on the opening day program in Arcadia Dec. 26. All three are owned by the high-powered partnership headed by SF Racing, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables. “The Bull, he's a horse that may need a race or two,” Baffert told colleague Bill Finley earlier this week. “I'd rather race them than just train them, train them, train them. You have to get races into these horses.” 'Rising Star' Ferocious (Flatter), a troubled fifth behind Citizen Bull in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, headlines the GIII Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Last term's GI Hopeful Stakes and GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity runner-up adds blinkers for trainer Gustavo Delgado for his sophomore debut. “The horse has a lot of talent. If you take a look at the numbers, he's one of the most qualified horses in the race,” assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado, Jr. said. “My dad is of the opinion that the horse is still between 75, 80 percent ready for this race, but it's a start. You don't want them to peak at this moment.” The field of seven also includes speedy Mucho Macho Man Stakes winner and 'Rising Star' Guns Loaded (Gun Runner), who makes his first start around two turns for trainer Jose D'Angelo; and the highly regarded Tappan Street (Into Mischief), a debut winner for Brad Cox going seven furlongs at Gulfstream Dec. 28. “It's a strong field and every horse is still improving,” D'Angelo said. The downgraded 1 1/8-miles Withers Stakes attracted a field of seven, led by 5-2 morning-line favorite and 'Rising Star' Captain Cook (Practical Joke), a runaway maiden winner at second asking going seven furlongs in the slop at the Big A Dec. 28. An eventful sixth in his debut for Norm Casse at Churchill Oct. 27, the bay brought $410,000 from St Elias Stable out of the Estate of John Hendrickson dispersal at the 2024 Keeneland November Horses of Racing Age Sale. He is trained by Rick Dutrow, Jr. Global Steve (Bucchero) brings a perfect two-for-two record to the table for trainer Butch Reid following a win in the Parx Future Stars Stakes Dec. 30. Reid upset last year's Withers with Uncle Heavy (Social Inclusion). Mo Quality (Mo Town) enters the Withers off a runner-up finish in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Jan. 4. Points on the road to the GI Kentucky Oaks will be on the line in Saturday's GIII Fasig-Tipton Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream and Sunday's GIII Fasig-Tipton Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita. The deep field of 11 for the Forward Gal is topped by the Saffie Joseph, Jr.-trained duo of 16 1/4-length debut winner and 'Rising Star' Rojo Rita (Volatile) and 2024 GIII Adirondack Stakes winner The Queens M G (Thousand Words); and the turning- back Cox pair of Tempted Stakes winner Stunner (Girvin) and GII Golden Rod Stakes third Eclatant (Into Mischief), respectively. Tenma (Nyquist), last year's GI Del Mar Debutante Stakes and GII Starlet Stakes heroine, is the 2-5 morning-line favorite for the five-horse field in the Las Virgenes. Graded action this weekend also includes Saturday's GII Santa Monica Stakes, GIII Megahertz Stakes and GIII Thunder Road Stakes at Santa Anita; and the GIII Endeavour Stakes and GIII Tampa Bay Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. The scratched-down field of four for the Santa Monica features GI La Brea Stakes upsetter Kopion (Omaha Beach). The post Champion Citizen Bull Returns in Robert B. 19. A New York Racing Association (NYRA) executive confirmed on Friday that the massive-scaled, $455-million rebuild of Belmont Park is on schedule for its planned grand opening in the fall of 2026. Glen Kozak, NYRA's senior vice president of operations and capital projects, provided a construction update during the Jan. 31 meeting of the New York State Franchise Oversight Board (FOB), which is the governor-appointed entity that represents the interests of New York State in the real estate at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course. “At this point 95 [to] 98% percent of the demolition and crushing is complete on the [old] building,” Kozak said. “They're going right now with the excavation [for] the basement of the entire new facility. Half of the concrete has been poured for the western portion of the facility. [There are] two simultaneous contractors that are working, one doing the [civil site work], another one doing the concrete that will be [the] superstructure here. “What helped us was that one contractor was very familiar with the property doing all the [civil site] work for the arena and also the retail village on the state property here, so they hit the ground running and really got a good jump start on the project,” Kozak said. Despite some recent cold weather, Kozak explained, “because of the soils that we're working on over here, the contractors have been able to continue with the work that's required here. The two contractors positioned us very well for where we're at this point, so we're on track schedule-wise, for sure,” Kozak said. “If you're looking at the site, half the deck is already going in for the first floor, [and] they're working from west to east at high level. We're looking to get the deck, the concrete, and the structural steel done by this fall to [the fourth quarter of 2025] to try and get this thing dried-in” by the first quarter of 2026, Kozak said. “The next big milestone for us is with the crushing complete and a bunch of the utility work that's already been in place, is using that crushing to set up a tracking pad for the crawler crane that will be positioned here. That's going to be a substantial piece of equipment that'll be here for quite some time to be able to set all the steel for this building,” Kozak said. “As far as the contracts that have been awarded, I believe it's right around 65% of the contracts that have been awarded for the works,” Kozak said. Kozak said that obtaining industrial items that take a relatively long lead time to procure, like boilers, chillers, escalators and elevators, plus steel for the superstructure, are also proceeding according to schedule. “The other big-ticket item is the curtain wall for the glass enclosure,” Kozak said. “Because as you all are all aware, we are on a tight timeline for this [to] stay on track. “The other two [big] items are the roof and the generator,” Kozak said. “A generator lead time for this size facility is trending almost a year's time out. So those are the big components that are being procured right now.” Kozak said the jobs to be contracted for interior items like paint, drywall and finish work are still in “active” negotiations. The target date for completion of all Belmont Park construction is Sept. 11, 2026. This would dovetail with the conclusion of that year's Saratoga season, making fall 2026 the first full race meet at the new facility. NYRA, however, is keeping open the option of running the 2026 GI Belmont Stakes back downstate at the new facility instead of at Saratoga like in 2024 and 2025. If the race does get moved from its temporary home in Saratoga in 2026, it would be under a festival-meet scenario in which all four Belmont racing surfaces (dirt, synthetic, two grass courses) would be ready, but the grandstand and clubhouse might not be fully finished. 22. The first reported foals for multiple group winner Lusail (Ire) have arrived, Al Shaqab Racing revealed on Friday. A filly out of Evertogether (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was the initial arrival and was bred by Haras de Castillon. She is from the family of group performers Mind Of Madness (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and Dragon Pulse (Ire) (Kyllachy {GB}). SCEA des Prairies welcomed a filly out of War Story (Fr) (Sunday Break {Jpn}), who is a stakes producer. Breeder Thomas Jeffroy said, “War Story's Lusail filly is splendid. Given the mare's previous production, Lusail has brought the desired attributes: substance, a strong physique, and good bone.” The stakes winner and multiple group-placed Baileys Showgirl (Fr) (Sepoy {Aus}) foaled a filly at Haras des Trois Chapelles, while Shalfah (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a daughter of Group 1 performer Rjwa (Ire) (Muhtathir {GB}), produced a filly, as well. Also placed in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes and G1 Prix Jean Prat, the son of Mehmas (Ire) stands for €5,000 at Haras de Bouquetot in 2025. 23. When Mo Quality (Mo Town) failed to meet his reserve as a 2-year-old, Gary Broad's Walmac Farm opted to race the colt in their own silks and send him on to trainer Chris Davis. Looking back now, Davis is just fine with how it all played out as the son of Mo Town is set to start in this weekend's Withers Stakes at Aqueduct on the road to the Kentucky Derby. A $50,000 Keeneland September purchase for Walmac, Mo Quality didn't get much action when he was offered at last year's OBS June Sale, but as soon as he arrived at Davis's barn at Turfway Park, the trainer liked what he saw. “Walmac typically buys colts for stallion prospects and some well-bred fillies and they'll run a few of them through the sale, but if they don't meet reserve they will just keep them,” explained Davis. “I think he kind of fell under the radar a bit, which is lucky for me. He was always just a dude, I mean a straightforward, classy horse. He actually came together quicker than I thought he would for being a big, strong horse. Once he started working, he got fit fast.” Davis didn't initially intend to debut Mo Quality at Keeneland last fall, but the colt was training so well in the mornings that he called an audible. After brushing a rival at the gate, Mo Quality dropped back to eleventh in the 6 ½ furlong contest but then closed late to place second behind Touchy (Nyquist), who was already stakes placed in the Tremont S. earlier in the year. “I didn't think he would make up that much ground first time out,” said Davis. “He's not a horse that I really geared to have ready to win first time out because I think he wanted to go two turns.” After breaking his maiden a month later at Churchill Downs, where he was able to race closer to the pace, Mo Quality stepped up to stakes company in the Smarty Jones Stakes on Jan. 4. Davis said that while the race didn't play out quite as hoped, the colt still showed plenty of potential in his runner-up performance behind multiple stakes winner Coal Battle (Coal Front). “I think we should have let him go a little bit quicker, have the pace a little bit more honest, and he was still just a little bit green down the lane,” Davis admitted. “It was his first time routing and he was kind of late changing to his right lead. Then once he did, he galloped out really well. He really wasn't tired post-race. He cooled out in about five minutes, drank half a bucket of water and was done. I think with a little bit of a more honest pace, we would have been right there.” That performance at Oaklawn gave Davis the confidence to send his trainee to another Kentucky Derby challenge series event. The winner of this weekend's Withers Stakes will receive 20 qualifying points. “I don't think the distance will be an issue,” said Davis. “He's proven around two turns already. Timing wise, it's a little quick back, but if he wins this he'll have 25 points and then I can just let him relax and give him six weeks before either the Jeff Ruby or the Blue Grass or maybe come back for the Wood Memorial.” Kendrick Carmouche gets the mount on Mo Quality for the Withers, which drew a field of seven. “I think the horse is going to break a little bit sharper than he did at Oaklawn,” reported Davis. “I'm not going to tell Kendrick to send him to the lead or take him back, but let the horse get into a comfortable rhythm and see wherever that puts him.” Mo Quality arrived at Belmont Park earlier this week and will be the second horse to race at Aqueduct for Davis, who launched his career at Arlington Park in 2016. When Arlington closed, Davis shifted his base to Turfway. Last year marked a career-best season for Davis when he amassed 38 wins. Richard Perkins homebred Windy Walk (Munnings) accounted for seven of those victories, including a score in the Rampart Stakes at Gulfstream. Politicallycorrect (Violence) was another stable star last year, claiming the Bashford Manor Stakes and placing second in the Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes. After a winter layoff, the 3-year-old colt co-owned by Walmac Farm, Five Fillies Stable and Ryan Ritt is set to return to training in the coming weeks. Politicallycorrect scores in the 2024 Bashford Manor Stakes | Coady Walmac Farm has been a steady supporter of Davis's stable since owner Gary Broad, who is based in California, purchased the historic Walmac property in Lexington in 2018 and expanded his racing stable to Kentucky. “Gary was like my second or third client,” recalled Davis. “They were transitioning from California and for whatever reason, they gave me an opportunity. It has been a really good relationship over the years. He's about the easiest client to deal with. It's all about the horse and you don't really get pressured into running if they're not right. You just do your job, take care of the horse, and hopefully it'll work out.” Davis admitted that there was an initial struggle when he had to move his stable following the closing of Arlington Park, but he credits some of his stable's recent success to his adapting to the new circuit. “I think we're placing horses better,” he said. “We always did well in Chicago because I just kind of had better stock than the local people up there. Horses that couldn't make it in Kentucky would come to me in Chicago and they would be standouts. When Arlington was shutting down, I had to make that transition to Kentucky and it was a big learning curve. I had to revamp my thinking and placing of some of these horses. The water is so much deeper in Kentucky. You're running for big, big money and people are going to be aggressive. It's tough to win races in Kentucky.” While he does maintain a small string at Palm Meadows in Florida, Davis said that this year he has focused on racing at Turfway rather than shifting to Gulfstream during the winter racing season. “For whatever reason I'm really comfortable training on synthetic,'” he explained. “That Tapeta up there has been nothing but flawless and my horses transition to the dirt really well. I had the best dirt season probably of my career last year and all the horses trained on the synthetic.” With a promising colt on the Kentucky Derby trail, it's possible that 2025 might just be Davis's best year yet. “No kidding,” he said with a chuckle. “But it's just great to be in the game.” The post Davis Looking for a Derby Hopeful in Withers-Bound Mo Quality appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. The G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero's first reported arrival was a colt out of Bourbonesque (GB) (Kingman {GB}) which arrived at Elevage de Tourgeville on Jan. 22. The mare is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Aqlaam (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and her foal was described as “a magnificent colt” by her breeders. Native Trail's second arrival was a “lovely filly” out of Dealer's Choice (Ire) (Exchange Rate) for Tactful Finance, Ltd., born on Jan. 23 at Kiltinan Castle Stud. Jon Shack indicated the stakes-producing mare would return to the G1 National Stakes/G1 Dewhurst Stakes winner. Ecurie de Sud welcomed a bay filly out of Treaty (Fr) (Dunkerque {Fr}) on Jan. 25. Fernando Laffon said she was a “gorgeous, strong filly.” The mare is a half-sister to a trio of black-type horses. There was also a chestnut colt out of Amore Bello (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) which arrived at Woodford Stud. Brian O'Neill said that he was “a quality colt with a great hip.” The mare is a half-sister G3 Prix Miesque heroine More Than Love (More Than Ready). A total of 179 mares visited the son of Oasis Dream (GB) in 2024. Also successful in the G2 Superlative Stakes and G3 Craven Stakes, the bay will stand for €16,000 at Kildangan Stud in Ireland this year.
