Reigning horse of the year THORPEDO ANNA (f, 4, Fast Anna–Sataves, by Uncle Mo) overwhelmed her six overmatched rivals in Saturday's GI Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park, drawing clear through the final furlong to score by the better part of five lengths mostly unextended. Not the quickest away from the five hole, the champion was a fraction wide into the first turn but ultimately edged up into a clear second to sit just off 22-1 Wild Bout Hilary (Midnight Lute), who carved out fractions of :23.47 and :46.74. Going nicely in hand into the second turn, Thorpedo Anna was allowed to poke her head in front with 2 1/2 furlongs to race as Free Like a Girl (El Deal) and Where's My Ring (Twirling Candy) tried to make a race of it two and three wide, respectively. But in the end, it was a one-horse rodeo, as the 1-5 chalk–giving her rivals anywhere between five and seven pounds–opened up while just being shown the whip into the final furlong, got a single right-handed reminder and was ridden out to a comfortable victory in 1:44.27 for the mile and a sixteenth on a fast main track. Rabbah Bloodstock homebred CHOISYA (GB) (m, 5, Night of Thunder {Ire}–Fragrancy {Ire}, by Singspiel {Ire}) held off a late surge from favored Excellent Truth (Ire) (Cotai Glory {Ire}) and withstood an objection from the latter's jockey Flavien Prat to register a half-length victory in Saturday's GI Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland. Given her last-out victory over GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf runner-up Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal) in the G2 Balanchine Stakes at Meydan Feb. 21, a starting price of 13-2 would have felt generous, and her chances were done no harm when she secured the box seat from third as the fleet Kehoe Beach (Omaha Beach) led them at a good gallop. Hugging the fence into the the final three furlongs, Choisya got through when Kehoe Beach rolled away from the inside in upper stretch and hit the front on her incorrect lead at the three-sixteenths. Prat looked determined to take a gap between the drifting Choisya and Kehoe Beach, but it shut down on him, causing Excellent Truth to steady. Prat steered the 3-1 pick back to the inside and was gaining inches, but the wire came first and stewards ultimately allowed the result to stand. Lifetime Record: 20-8-5-0. By Mike Love An exciting day of action will play out today at Mt Harding racecourse for the Methven trotting club with a twelve race card full of big even fields. The Roseland Racing Drivers Challenge will showcase some of the best driving talent New Zealand has to offer. Methven trotting club President Michael Heenan is hopeful of a positive day for both the club and industry as a whole. “We hope that the day is received well,” said Heenan. “We are really happy with the drivers we’ve got and the support we have got.” There are four teams in total that will battle it out. Team Ladies ($4.50) will have Crystal Hackett, Sheree Tomlinson and Samantha Ottley. Team Legends ($2.60) has Maurice McKendry, Ricky May and Tony Herlihy. Team Methven ($7.00) consists of Kimberly Butt, Gerard O’Reilly and John Morrison. While Team Premiership Leaders ($2.10) has Matthew Williamson, Blair Orange and John Dunn. “I’ve been looking at the fields and every field is so even, it should make for a good betting day. “I slightly favour Team Premiership Leaders – I think they have the better drives,” tipped Heenan. Drivers will be wearing their personal training colours or the colours of their employees. Heenan will also line up two runners at today’s meeting. Maiden trotter Rondo Trouble ($31.00FF) will be top four chance in race one the Methven Resort & Opuke Hot Pools trot over 2400m with driver Ricky May. The four year old Superfast Stuart gelding has strung together a series of fourth placings recently, and Heenan is expecting more of the same today. “He’s a nice type and I think he’ll win a couple of races. But at the moment he’s big and a bit weak. He’ll be a rough show in a good big field.” Troubleshooter ($9.00FF) will go around in race eight The Phat Duck Brew Bar & Kitchen (Invited Drivers) mobile pace over 2300m. The four year old Sunshine Beach mare has been in strong form recently and Heenan suggested another forward showing is likely. “She’s getting better. She’s probably not the most genuine horse i’ve ever trained but at the moment she’s going well. I think the one of John Morrison’s (Ocean Of Tears) will be hard to beat.” John Morrison has drawn the drive. Outside of the drivers challenge, the feature race on the programme is race ten The Brown Pub Methven Mount Hutt TC Cup over 3000m for a $20,000 purse. The field features race favourite Renegade ($2.70FF) for trainer Brendon Hill and driver Craig Ferguson. Also race eleven the Lather Up ‘Little Green Jug’ mobile pace over a mile also for a purse of $20,000 will see a field of ten run to the judge. Currently there is a battle for favouritism between Strikem ($3.50FF) and Sacetas ($3.60FF). Race one gets underway at an earlier start time of 11:35am. View the full article

Gosger (Nyquist) had been matching motors in the morning with 'TDN Rising Star' East Avenue (Medaglia d'Oro), and while the latter was a bounce-back runner-up in the GI Toyota Blue Grass Stakes this past Tuesday, the gray colt managed to go one better in Saturday's GIII Stonestreet Lexington Stakes, swinging into action off the final turn before keeping on nicely to score in his black-type and two-turn debuts. The homebred bounced alertly from stall five and was content to take up a rail-skimming position behind the leading trio of the comebacking pacesetter Bracket Buster (Vekoma), the well-fancied Praetor (Into Mischief) and a three-wide Hypnus (Into Mischief), who sat handier to the pace with blinkers added for the first time by trainer Ken McPeek. Traveling strongly into the final quarter mile as Praetor began to pour in the pressure to the pacesetter, Gosger was tipped out into the three-wide line, came after Praetor at the furlong grounds and boxed on–albeit a bit greenly– for the victory. Bracket Buster battled back inside to round out the exacta behind a weakening Praetor. Hypnus was never dangerous in fourth. Gosger was a well-backed 5-2 on six-furlong debut at Gulfstream Park Dec. 14 and brushed the gate at the start before finishing with interest to be second. Adding Lasix for a mile maiden in Hallandale Feb. 15, the colt attended a good pace, found himself in front a quarter mile from home and inched clear to take it by 1 1/2 lengths. “We weren't sure if he had enough experience coming here today,” said winning trainer Brendan Walsh. “He could have done with maybe another run or two. We gave him a little time after he broke his maiden. He did a lot of growing, so we just took our time with him. So I think there's a lot of upside to the horse, and I think he's got a lot in front of him.” As for what's next, the pragmatic Walsh is happy to let things unfold naturally. “We'll see how he comes out (of this race),” he said. “I won't do anything drastic too quick unless he really warrants it. He's going to be a lovely horse as the year goes on, really, but we're going to stay calm and pick our spots with him and see how we go.” Pedigree Notes: Gosger is the 30th stakes winner and 18th graded winner for his sire, who locked up an Eclipse Award with his victory in the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile over this very course and distance. He is the third stakes winner bred on the cross over Tapit, a number that includes current GI Kentucky Oaks hopeful Tenma, and other A.P. Indy-line dams have produced an additional 10 of Nyquist's black-type winners. Gosger is the 130th SW and 64th GSW out of a daughter of Tapit. The winner's unraced dam, a half-sister to dual Classic winner I'll Have Another (Flower Alley) and MGSW Golden Award (Medaglia d'Oro), is responsible for Harvey's Lil Goil (American Pharoah), who won the GI QE II Challenge Cup over the local turf course in 2020; Archie the Giza (Cairo Prince), third in this track's GIII Ben Ali Stakes in 2024; and to the dam of SW Movin' On Up (Accelerate). 'TDN Rising Star' Booth (Mitole) took a lot of pressure early, but refused to yield late, and held off all comers in the GIII Count Fleet Sprint Handicap to give the Asmussen clan the exacta. Ridden by Erik Asmussen and trained by Steve Asmussen, the chestnut went right to the front with California invader Anarchist (Distorted Humor) glued to his hip. That pair broke off from the field into a private match race on the backside through an opening split of :21.87 and a half in :44.66 before swinging into lane still together. As his rival began to fade and the closers loomed the danger, Booth gave just enough to hold of stablemate Ryvit (Competitive Edge) with Keith Asmussen aboard in a 1-2 for the barn. In a last-to-first charge, Al Jafara (GB) (Pinatubo {Ire}) made her first start for new connections on a new continent a winning one as she handily claimed a Keeneland allowance and stamped herself the newest 'Rising Star'. Purchased for €250,000 last October from ARQARC on the back of her maiden score at Chantilly, she was imported to the States to race for the partnership of Madaket Stables LLC, Michael Dubb, and Richard Schermerhorn. Sent out here from the shed row of Chad Brown, she went to post with first-time Lasix and carrying 5-2 odds, Al Jafara watched the race as the caboose in this contest and launched an eye-catching rally coming off the far bend. Closing home furiously, she inhaled the pacesetters and kicked on to score impressively. She is the second winner from five US starters for Pinatubo (Ire). Abu Dhabi Abandoned After Five-Horse Incident
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in The Rest of the World
Racing at Abu Dhabi was abandoned after an incident involving five horses in the Listed Abu Dhabi Championship, the Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) announced on Saturday afternoon. The race was the seventh of eight on the programme and won by Stormy Ocean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) with Sam Hitchcott aboard for trainer Ahmad bin Harmash. The incident occurred near the 900-metre mark, with five jockeys being unseated from their mounts. Jockeys Tadhg O'Shea, Richard Mullen and Qais Al Busaidi were sent to the hospital to be evaluated, while Silvestre de Sousa and Marcelino Rodrigues, were cleared of any serious injury. Sense Of Wisdom (GB) (Shamardal), the mount of O'Shea, was euthanised. Afterward, stewards conducted a track inspection with a representative of the ADTC, paying particular attention to the track at the 900 metres. The eighth and final race on the card was abandoned after they concluded their inspection. Big Truzz (Justify) caught a lot of attention in the paddock, and he ran to his looks against a well-bred field of Keeneland maidens, coming home as his sire's newest 'TDN Rising Star' in the process. In no hurry after the break, he was content to watch it all unfold from mid-pack as the leaders rolled through fractions of :21.56 and a half in :44.93. Swinging through the bend in fifth, he made an eye-catching move entering the lane and roared past the pacesetters to score by an open advantage. Fact (Instagrand) ran on well to take second. The final time was 1:16.40. Big Truzz is out of a half-sister to GISW Salutos Amigos (Salute the Sarge) and GSW Sarah's Secret (Leroidesanimaux {Brz}). Windy conditions, especially during the back half of the morning, kept the bullets to a minimum as the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training under-tack show concluded with the last of seven sessions Saturday. Beating the elements as one of the first set to go shortly after 8 a.m, a filly by Ocala Stud's Win Win Win (hip 1206) consigned by Navas Equine was one of two juveniles to put up the morning's fastest furlong time in :9 4/5. “In order to have a performance like this [filly], you have to really have ability,” said Jonathan Navas who founded Navas Equine as a pinhooking business in 2020. Purchased for $60,000 out of Keeneland September last year, the Florida-bred filly already has a winning full-brother in Rammayy who was his sire's top-selling yearling when he brought $250,000 at KEESEP in 2023 and also ran third in this year's UAE Two Thousand Guineas Trial behind G3 Saudi Derby winner Golden Vekoma (Vekoma). First dam Just Like Lucy, also a winner, is a full-sister to MSW Pretty Perfection while the family also includes millionaire and GI Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup Stakes winner Sweet Talker (Stormin Fever) and MGSW Silver Medallion (Badge of Silver). “She's been very lovely with us at the barn since we bought her at Keeneland,” Navas continued. “She's been nice to be around. And every week, every workout, she's been presenting herself well. She did prep pretty well [at the Ocala-based farm] and we were fortunate enough for her repeat and put up the performance that she did this morning.” Joining Navas in his compliments of the filly was Sport of Kings Racing Manager Mohamed Moubarak. “She's been absolutely fantastic on the dirt when she was breezing at home on the farm,” said Moubarak. “She was exactly the same way. She breezed good and galloped out super.” The fastest worker of the 16-strong Navas Equine consignment, the Win Win Win filly was a stand out early. “We had an idea, through the preparation [that she was the best],” Navas said. “What I like the most is that she's pretty easy. The rider [this morning] told me he didn't have to ask her so strongly. I'm just happy to have a filly with her talent and ability. I think she can go anywhere and compete anywhere in the world.” Despite the wind, sunny skies and warm temperatures have brought buyers out to the OBS Sales grounds with Navas noting that action has been steady in the barns. “People are coming around and doing their due diligence,” he said. “I'm getting a lot of good feedback and a lot of questions on social media. I think people are going to show up [next week.” The second juvenile to put up the fastest time Saturday morning was a filly from the first crop of Independence Hall (hip 1142) consigned by Eddie Woods. Woods also consigned an Independence Hall colt during OBS March who brought seven figures from JPM Bloodstock after working in the same :9 4/5 time. The fastest quarter-mile breeze of the day belonged to a colt by No Nay Never (hip 1053) from the Omar Ramirez Bloodstock consignment. A half to MGSP Fixette (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), the colt failed to reach his reserve twice last year at both Keeneland September and the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Yearling Sale. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday with bidding beginning each day at 10:30 a.m. The post Windy Morning Brings Final OBS April Under-Tack Show To A Close appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. The filly cleared an optional claimer at Oaklawn in early March, which set her up to take a shot in the GI Central Bank Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in April. The homebred finished third and then was the runner-up in the GII Eight Belles Stakes at Churchill Downs on the Oaks undercard. With just three weeks remaining to the GI Kentucky Derby, a trio of probable starters turned in workouts over the Churchill main track, while another continued his preparations at Turfway Park. Trainer Steve Asmussen sent out his GII Louisiana Derby romper Tiztastic (Tiz the Law) for a five-furlong move in the company of maiden stablemate Publisher (American Pharoah). Taking to the track around 5:45 a.m., the pair went the distance in 1:00.80 in fractional times of :13, :24.80 and :36.60 before galloping out six furlongs in 1:13.40 and up seven-eighths in 1:26.60. Joel Rosario was aboard Tiztastic and worked outside of Publisher, the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up, who was put through his paces by longtime exercise rider Carlos Rosas. “Both horses moved in here to Churchill nicely,” said Asmussen, still in search of that elusive first win in the Derby. “With all of the weather we had in the area last week, it was nice to have a fast track to work over. I was extremely pleased with how they handled and traveled over the racetrack. They looked capable of doing more.” Louisiana Derby winner Tiztastic working five furlongs in 1:00.80 outside Arkansas Derby runner-up Publisher. pic.twitter.com/vlB5Ta6Brx — Kevin Kerstein (@HorseRacingKK) April 12, 2025 Just after 7 .a.m., Flying Mohawk (Karakontie {Jpn}) went to the track to work in the company of 2024 Kentucky Derby eighth-place finisher Honor Marie (Honor Code). They were timed in a leisurely :50.80 for a half-mile, with the opening two furlongs in :26 flat. The pair galloped out five panels in 1:03.40. “It was both of their first works back after running so I just wanted an easy move,” trainer Whit Beckman said. “(Flying Mohawk) has worked well on dirt before so I figured he'd handle it just fine.” Joe Ramos rode Flying Mohawk to a runner-up effort in the GIII Jeff Ruby Stakes Mar. 22, was in the irons for Saturday's move and retains the call in the Derby, Beckman confirmed. “Joe has always given me his best,” Beckman said. “This horse is fairly straightforward to ride but I'm always confident with Joe knowing that he'll give me his top effort every time. That's all you can really ask.” The Beckman-conditioned Drexel Hill (Bolt d'Oro) and Simply Joking (Practical Joke) went a half-mile in company in :48.60 with a five-furlong gallop-out in 1:00.80 in advance of the May 2 GI Kentucky Oaks. “(Simply Joking) is a really nice filly,” said jockey Florent Geroux, who was aboard the GII Fantasy Stakes runner-up. “It was a good work–pretty easy and not asking much of her.” Third to her stable companion in the Silverbulletday Stakes Jan. 18, Drexel Hill exits a 3/4-length victory in the Mar. 1 Busher Stakes at Aqueduct. Chunk of Gold (Preservationist), runner-up to Tiztastic in the Louisiana Derby, drilled five furlongs in :59.40 over the Turfway Polytrack for trained Ethan West Saturday morning. “(Jockey) Jareth (Loveberry) came in town to work him and it was a really good move,” West said. “I had him :47 and change for a half-mile and he galloped out three-quarters in 1:12.” Training hours at Churchill Downs remain 5:30-10 a.m. with renovation breaks from 6:45-7:15 a.m. and 8:30-9 a.m. Beginning Friday, April 18, training will shift to 5:15-10 a.m., with a special 7:15-7:30 a.m. window designated exclusively for Kentucky Derby and Oaks contenders. Shadwell Stable's 'TDN Rising Star' Muhimma (Munnings) will not participate in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks on May 2, trainer Brad Cox told Carlos Morales of Agentes 305 on X during an interview from the Churchill Downs backstretch Saturday morning. Perfect in her three racetrack appearances at two, the $700,000 Keeneland September purchase earned her 'Rising Star' over 6 1/2 furlongs at Churchill last Sept. 20 and followed up with a 5 1/2-length allowance victory going seven-eighths of a mile before closing the season with a front-running success in the GII Demoiselle Stakes. The gray filly made her sophomore debut in the GIII Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park Feb. 23, weakening in the late stages to be third to Quietside (Malibu Moon) as the odds-on favorite, and she filled the same spot behind the front-running La Cara (Street Sense) in Keeneland's GI Central Bank Ashland Stakes Apr. 7. “Muhimma will pass, we'll kind of regroup,” Cox told Morales. “She ran well, but not as well as we were hoping.” Having accumulated 50 points, Muhimma held 12th place on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks. Her defection allows GII Gulfstream Park Oaks runner-up Anna's Promise (Promises Fulfilled) into the field of 14. Sunday, ParisLongchamp, France, post time: 15:50, PRIX DE FONTAINEBLEAU-G3, €80,000, 3yo, c/g, 8fT Field: Batal Youmzain (Fr) (Hello Youmzain {Fr}), Ridari (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}), Sahlan (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), Misunderstood (Fr) (Hello Youmzain {Fr}), Heybetli (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}), Madero (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), Darius Cen (Fr) (Persian King {Ire}). TDN Verdict: France's premier Poule d'Essai des Poulains trial sees the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere third Misunderstood tackle some up-and-comers including the Listed Prix Omnium II winner Darius Cen and the maiden winners Sahlan and Ridari. Sahlan, who represents the all-conquering Graffard stable, looked a smart prospect when winning by four lengths on debut on Deauville's Polytrack in late November with sharp finishing sectionals suggesting he must be taken seriously. Sunday, ParisLongchamp, France, post time: 16:25, PRIX DE LA GROTTE-G3, €80,000, 3yo, f, 8fT Field: Zarigana (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), Shes Perfect (Ire) (Sioux Nation), Godspeed (Fr) (Hello Youmzain {Fr}), Safia (Fr) (Sottsass (Fr), Rosa Salvaje (Ire) (Maximum Security), Tigress Of Gaul (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), Lady Majesty Cen (Fr) (Kingman {GB}) TDN Verdict: Prospects don't come much more exciting than Zarigana, who despite tasting narrow defeat in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac over this course and distance on Arc day is potentially one of this year's leading lights. Previously dominant in the G3 Prix d'Aumale, the grandaughter of Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar) is greeted by two unbeaten peers with big upside in Safia and Tigress Of Gaul with the former showing she was ready for this kind of test in Saint-Cloud's Prix Kizil Kourgan last month. Sunday, ParisLongchamp, France, post time: 17:00, PRIX NOAILLES-G3, €80,000, 3yo, 10 1/2fT Field: Stormy Donald (Fr) (Hello Youmzain {Fr}), Aidan's Phone (Fr) (Prince Gibraltar {Fr}), Rafale Design (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), Sirius Brown (Fr) (Dream Ahead), Nitoi (Siyouni {Fr}), Uther (GB) (Camelot {GB}), Tito Mo Cen (Ire) (Uncle Mo). TDN Verdict: Yeguada Centurion's TDN Rising Star Tito Mo Cen is put to the test in this Prix du Jockey Club pointer, with his wide-margin debut success at Chantilly followed by success in that track's Listed Prix Maurice Caillault. Another wide-margin Polytrack winner, Rafale Design wowed at Deauville in November while Andre Fabre saddles Nitoi, the half-brother to the G1 Hong Kong Vase hero Junko (GB) (Intello {Ger}) who has the one run under his belt having scored at Chantilly in September.
