  1. Alex Cole, racing manager for owners Jim and Fitri Hay, has paid tribute to their “superstar” Starlust (GB), who has reportedly attracted plenty of interest from Australia with a view to a stallion career following his victory in Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar. Trained by Ralph Beckett, Starlust is now the winner of six of his 18 career starts, having thrived on his racing in 2024, notably winning at the Breeders' Cup on his tenth run of a three-year-old campaign which began at Meydan back in January. Though his biggest success before Saturday had come at just Group 3 level when winning last year's Sirenia Stakes at Kempton, he'd since finished third in a pair of top-level races–last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Santa Anita and the latest edition of the Nunthorpe Stakes at York–giving his connections the belief that local odds of 33-1 were not an accurate reflection of his chance when he lined up at Del Mar in a race featuring old rivals Big Evs (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) and Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}), plus home favourite Cogburn (Not This Time). “We knew he'd outrun his odds, because between the favourite [Cogburn] and Bradsell they were going to go hell for leather,” Cole summed up. “He's been placed in a Nunthorpe, he's a multiple stakes winner, and he was Group 1-placed at the Breeders' Cup last year. He didn't deserve to be the price he was–we wouldn't have sent him all that way and he wouldn't have been Ralph's only runner if we didn't fancy him a little bit. “This horse has never really let us down,” he added. “We started off the year at Meydan, he's run 10 times in four countries, and he's only a three-year-old. He's a superstar.” Neither the Hays nor Cole were in attendance at Del Mar, instead forced to suffer from afar in the anxious moments afterwards when Starlust had to survive a stewards' inquiry before his success, by a neck from Motorious (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), was made official. “No!” was Cole's emphatic response when asked whether he was confident that the result would stick. “You never know what the stewards are going to do, do you? But he was the best horse in the race at the end of the day. “We watched it for the first time in multiple different locations. They [the Hays] had business commitments which meant they couldn't make it and I'm in Dubai, organising our horses out here. But that was a very special moment–they're all great [Group 1 wins], but that was very special. “For me there is no better owner in racing than Fitri Hay. She supports a lot of people, feeds a lot of mouths, and deserves everything she gets.” How the Hays got their hands on Starlust is a story that goes back to 2022 when the son of Zoustar (Aus) was the final lot through the ring on the second day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Bred by Steve Parkin's Branton Court Stud, he is out of the G3 Prix de Saint Georges winner and G2 Lowther Stakes runner-up Beyond Desire (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), the dam of four winners from seven runners, with the others including the Listed scorer Queen Of Desire (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). “I remember him well,” Cole said of the colt he bought with Dermot Farrington for 55,000gns. “He was the last lot in the ring. It was around a quarter past nine at night and there were about five people left at Tattersalls–Dermot and I were two of them. “The stallion was quite cold at the time, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, but he's very well-bred–the mare was brilliant. I think at the time Ralph had Lezoo [winner of the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes] and one other by Zoustar, so that's why he got him.” Beckett might have a monopoly on Zoustar's top-level winners in the Northern Hemisphere through Lezoo and Starlust, both conceived during the stallion's time in Britain when shuttling to Tweenhills Stud, but his influence has been felt much more widely at home in Australia where his tally of individual Group 1 winners now stands at seven. This year his fee at Widden Stud was increased to A$275,000 (around €167,000), making him the joint most expensive stallion standing in Australia, while in June a 1/60th share in the sire went for A$1,300,000 (€787,000), breaking the record for the most expensive stallion share ever sold at public auction. Little wonder, then, that Starlust has caught the imagination of stallion bosses in Australia following such a significant success on the global stage at the Breeders' Cup. Not only did that triumph more than double Starlust's career earnings, now standing at over £700,000, but it also has his connections minded to tread a bit more carefully with him in 2025, even if the horse himself might resent it. “If only you could see my phone!” Cole said of the interest the colt has received, “Mainly from down under.” He continued, “The horse changed his entire profile on Saturday night. He's gone from being a horse you run 10 times a year to one you've actually got to think about a bit, but then he loves racing. [Next year] I'd have to work back from the King Charles III and he loves York. He's won twice and been placed in a Nunthorpe there, so the Nunthorpe would have to be very much on the agenda. “He's going to have to be managed, but as I say, he's a three-year-old who has raced in four countries this year–it's an incredible feat, both from the horse and the trainer.” The post Starlust Suddenly a Colt In Demand after Breeders’ Cup Glory appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 3. Racing Together announced on Monday that its third annual Industry Day will be held at Nottingham Racecourse on Thursday, February 6, supported by the HBLB, the Racecourse Association and the Racing Foundation. Keynote speaker Baroness Dido Harding, senior Steward at the Jockey Club, will join contributors from the world of racing and beyond to discuss the value of racing and the impact of community engagement. The day includes welcome refreshments and lunch, while attendees will also have the opportunity to meet a very special retired racehorse as part of the event. The full-day seminar programme and speaker information will follow in due course. Delegate prices have been held at this year's rate and early-bird tickets at £75 are now on sale here until Monday, January 6. John Blake, CEO of Racing Together, said, “The support and feedback from the inaugural Industry Day at Ascot, and also this year's event at Chester, evidenced an appetite for honest exploration of the progress and potential of community engagement across racing. “Building on past themes, while bringing new voices and experiences to our audience, is the challenge of this day and will be the measure of its success. The hope is for guest speakers to trigger an assessment of whether racing can claim an authentic role supporting social cohesion, or if its range of community outcomes amount to an intermittent by-product of commercial success.” The post Early-Bird Tickets Available for Racing Together Industry Day at Nottingham appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 5. Edited Press Release The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) is thrilled to announce the launch of its 2024 Hay Drive, supported by a generous $60,000 matching gift from the Santulli Family Foundation. This annual campaign is essential to ensure that the TRF's herd of 400 retired Thoroughbreds receives the necessary care and resources to thrive through the winter months. With a goal of raising $120,000, the TRF is calling on supporters to help fill the haylofts and provide vital sustenance to its retired horses. Rising costs have made this year's campaign especially important, as the foundation works to meet the increasing needs at all TRF farms. Thanks to the commitment of Richard and Peggy Santulli, every dollar donated to the TRF will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $60,000, doubling the impact of each contribution. “We're deeply thankful for the Santulli Family Foundation's ongoing commitment to our cause. With their generous matching grant, we can continue to give our horses the safe and comfortable retirement they have earned,” said Maggie Sweet, Executive Director of TRF. 6. WinStar Farm will host open houses at the farm beginning Nov. 6 and running through Nov. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the farm's complex on Paynes Mill Road in Versailles. No appointment is necessary to inspect the WinStar stallions for 2025, headed up by Constitution and Life Is Good, in addition to two of WinStar's newest stallions, Heartland (Justify) and Timberlake (Into Mischief). Heartland, a 'TDN Rising Star', is a son of Justify and a half-brother to Classic Empire. Heartland flashed his brilliance in a head-turning career debut at Del Mar last year. In a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight, Heartland ovecame an awkward start to win going away by two lengths for trainer Bob Baffert. His final clocking of 1:03.20 was the fastest time of any 2-year-old at the distance at Del Mar or Saratoga in 2023. Timberlake is a winner of the stallion-making GI Champagne S. at two and a millionaire son of perennial leading sire Into Mischief. Timberlake joins Practical Joke as the only other son of Into Mischief at stud to win a Grade I as a juvenile. The open house events will include light snacks and refreshments for attendees. For additional information, contact WinStar at (859) 873-1717. 7. The sire of 19 stakes winners on four different continents in 2024, Justify (Scat Daddy–Stage Magic, by Ghostzapper) will command a service fee of $250,000 in 2025, the Versailles, Kentucky-based nursery announced Monday. Alongside Into Mischief and Gun Runner, Justify will stand for the joint-highest covering fee in the United States. The rising 10-year-old stallion is the sire of a trio of Group 1 winners this season, including City of Troy, winner in succession of the G1 Betfred Derby at Epsom, the G1 Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown and an all-the-way success in the prestigious G1 Juddmonte International Stakes at York. His eight American black-type winners this term include GII Appalachian Stakes heroine Buchu and Alpha Bella, victorious in the GII La Prevoyante Stakes. The unbeaten Awesome Result and Yuttitham (Jpn) struck at listed level in Japan, while Storm Boy (Aus) scored for the third time at group level in Australia in August. Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) is the farm's other six-figure stallion and will stand for $125,000 in 2025. The 16-year-old sire has been represented by Grade I winners Kingsbarns and Adare Manor, who was to sell at the Fasig-Tipton 'Night of the Stars' on Monday. Uncle Mo has been represented by 14 black-type winners in 2024. Domestic Product will stand alongside his successful sire Practical Joke beginning in 2025 at a fee of $30,000. Winner of the GI H. Allen Jerkens Stakes, emulating his sire, the son of Goods and Services (Paynter) also won the GIII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby going 8 1/2 furlongs around two turns and cut back to one bend to crush by 7 1/2 lengths in the one-mile GIII Dywer Stakes. He was a sound third in Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and retires with a record of 4-2-1 from 10 starts and earnings of $819,200. “Domestic Product is a striking individual,” said Coolmore's Charlie O'Connor. “He was a top-notch racehorse and is by a very good sire in Practical Joke who has enjoyed another great year highlighted by his two new Grade I winners at Saratoga (Ways and Means). “We feel Domestic Product is extremely well priced at $30,000 and is certain to prove popular with breeders. We were all thrilled with the runs of Sierre Leone and Fierceness in the Breeders' Cup Classic and look forward to them joining the roster in due course.” Tiz the Law (Constitution), the leading first-crop sire by number of graded winners (two) and overall stakes winners (five), will also stand for $30,000 in 2025. COOLMORE AMERICA STUD FEES — 2025 American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile), $45,000 Corniche (Quality Road), $15,000 Domestic Product (Practical Joke), $30,000 Echo Town (Speightstown), $5,000 Epicenter (Gun Runner), $35,000 Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), $20,000 Gunite (Gun Runner), $30,000 Jack Christopher (Munnings), $25,000 Justify (Scat Daddy), $250,000 Maximum Security (New Year's Day), $5,000 Mendelssohn (Scat Daddy), $15,000 Mo Town (Uncle Mo), $5,000 Munnings (Speightstown), $65,000 Practical Joke (Into Mischief), $75,000 Tiz the Law (Constitution), $30,000 Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie), $125,000 The post Justify Tops Coolmore America Roster, To Stand For $250K in 2025 appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 9. The racing season at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, AZ, which was supposed to open Saturday, Nov. 2 before an 11th-hour intervention from HISA, is now set to begin next Monday, Nov. 11, according to a joint release sent out late Sunday evening from the track and the Arizona Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA). On Thursday, Oct. 31, HISA issued a press release, expressing concerns over the condition of the racetrack surface. Track officials postponed the start of the season, and an inspection team from HISA was expected to be on site Monday to conduct testing on Tuesday. Training could begin as soon as Wednesday and would continue through the weekend before the first live racing program next Monday. Arizona HBPA President Lloyd Yother said, “The horsemen and Turf Paradise management are working hand and hand with HISA and the Arizona Racing Commission to ensure we have a safe meet.” Turf Paradise General Manager Vince Francia said, “Sincere thanks to our track maintenance crews, the horsemen, and everyone involved in getting us ready to start another great season of racing.” The two stakes races scheduled for Nov. 2–the $40,000 Jack Coady Sr. Handicap and $40,000 Hank Mills Jr. Handicap–will now run on Wednesday, Nov. 13 and Thursday, Nov. 14, respectively. 10. Group 1 winner and unbeaten juvenile Henry Longfellow (Ire) has been retired and will take up stallion duties at Coolmore Stud in Ireland next year. The Dubawi (Ire) colt ran out an impressive winner of the G1 National Stakes at two and, while he failed to register a victory as a three-year-old, he was just a neck behind Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) in a pulsating renewal of the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Henry Longfellow also filled the frame in the G1 Prix du Moulin earlier this year, and retired having earned a career-high rating of 121. Coolmore's Director of Sales, David O' Loughlin, said, “He went unbeaten in three starts at two, including the Group 1 National Stakes, just like his sire Dubawi, who is becoming a very significant sire of sires. “He again showed top-class form at three over a mile when beaten just a neck by Rosallion in the St James's Palace Stakes. He's arguably the best-looking son of Dubawi to go to stud and he's out of one of the best Galileo race mares ever. I have no doubt that he will prove extremely popular with breeders.” Henry Longfellow's dam is none other than seven-time Group 1 scorer Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). He becomes the first son of Dubawi to stand at Coolmore and his fee will be announced shortly. 13. The John and Thady Gosden-trained Lead Artist (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) heads the entries for the $1 Million Bahrain International Trophy on Friday November 15. The Group 2 contest has attracted runners from Great Britain, Ireland, France and Japan. The field includes last year's winner, Spirit Dancer (GB) (Frankel {GB}), along with this year's Arlington Million winner, Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), and the Japanese-trained Group 1 scorer, Killer Ability (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the mount of British champion jockey, Oisin Murphy. Lead Artist is the only three-year-old in the line-up. The Juddmonte-owned colt won the Group 3 Darley Stakes at Newmarket over 1m 1f on his last start and the Gosden team are looking forward to the trip. Thady said, “The Bahrain International Trophy is an event that has gone from strength to strength over the past five years. To date, we have run three horses in the race, all of whom have finished second. “Lead Artist is a horse who has always had a lot of natural speed, as such he was running over a mile and also over seven furlongs this summer. He won a Group 3 at Goodwood over what is a pretty slick mile but he improved again for the step up in trip in the Darley Stakes and the fast ground in Bahrain should suit. It's a race where you need a bit of pace. “Kieran Shoemark will ride. He's ridden him in all his starts, knows him very well and he has had riding contracts in Bahrain before, so he knows the track well too.” He added, “Lead Artist is a three-year-old, whereas our previous runners were older horses, but he has not had a hard season. He has been relatively lightly raced and travelling a horse when they're turning from three to four can help them mature a lot, it can be a really good experience for them ahead of their four-year-old season.” The post Lead Artist Heads Entries For $1 Million Bahrain International Trophy appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 14. Dual Group 1-winning and unbeaten champion juvenile Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) will stand for £15,000 at Cheveley Park Stud in 2025. The highest-rated two-year-old in Britain last year, Vandeek rounded off a stellar campaign with victories in the G1 Prix Morny and the G1 Middle Park Stakes. He is now available to view by appointment and Cheveley Park's Chris Richardson commented, “We are thrilled by the response from breeders, both domestically and internationally, endorsing the decision to stand such an exciting stallion prospect as Vandeek at Cheveley Park Stud, in partnership with KHK Racing Ltd. “The speed influence Vandeek brings will really suit our broodmare band as well as that of our clients' mares and it is exciting for us to be going back to what we do best; speed.” Twilight Son, who stood for eight seasons at Cheveley Park Stud, does not feature on the roster for 2025. Vandeek looks set to stand solely alongside the stud's Ulysses (Ire), who enjoyed a fine season with flag bearer White Birch (GB) among others. He will stand for £8,000. 17. Group 2-winning juvenile and TDN Rising Star Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) has been acquired by Ballyhane Stud and will take up stallion duties at the County Carlow outfit in 2025. Sakheer topped the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale in 2022 when bought by Oliver St Lawrence on behalf of KHK Racing for €550,000. He won his maiden second time up at Haydock before running out an impressive winner of the Mill Reef Stakes just 16 days later where he had Charyn (Ire) and Shouldvebeenaring (GB) behind him. Sakheer won two of his seven starts for trainer Roger Varian and reached a career-high rating of 114. Varian commented, “Sakheer was an exceptional two-year-old and we were all devastated when injury prevented him from fulfilling his potential as a three-year-old. He really had the wow factor and we were privileged to have him in our yard.” Ballyhane boss Joe Foley added, “I saw Sakheer on the gallops one morning with Roger and it was obvious that he was held in the highest regard. He's a very impressive-looking horse with a big pedigree and I'm just thrilled that he's retiring to Ballyhane.” KHK Racing will retain some equity in the horse, who is set to join one of the leading first-season sires Sand Of Mali (Fr) at the stud. KHK's Racing advisor Oliver St Lawrence concluded, “Sakheer had huge talent and we're really excited by what he can do at stud. We'll be very interested to see what he can produce and if he transfers his ability, looks and temperament to his progeny, he should have a very exciting future. We are delighted to partner with Ballyhane who have a terrific record in producing good stallions.” Sakheer is a half-brother to Group 2 winner Lemista, a multiple Group/Graded winner in Ireland and the USA. A stud fee for Sakheer will be announced at a later date. 18. Trainer Harry Eustace says that he is eager for a rematch between his runner Docklands (GB) (Massaat {Ire}} and impressive Cox Plate winner Via Sistina (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Docklands was beaten 11 lengths when fifth in the Cox Plate late last month, with the ex-British runner Via Sistina chalking up a fourth Australian Group 1 success in style, beating runner-up Prognosis by eight lengths. Despite the margin of defeat, Eustace would prefer to clash again with Via Sistina in Saturday's Champions Stakes rather than drop back for the Champions Mile on the same Flemington card. “Docklands is really well. We're very happy with him and he almost certainly goes to the mile-and-a-quarter Champions Stakes on Saturday at Flemington. It might surprise a few people that we're keen to take on Via Sistina again, but I very much feel he's improved since the Cox Plate,” Eustace told Grosvenor Sport. “I think Via Sistina will scare a lot of horses into the Mile, which ought to make the Champions Stakes into a smaller field and more tactical affair, which I think will suit us.” The Chris Waller-trained Via Sistina was previously handled by George Boughey in Britain, winning last year's Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh and finishing second in the Champion Stakes before her 2.7million guineas sale to owner Yulong Investments at the end of 2023. 19. By Brigette Solomon It was a cracking start to the day for local Palmerston North trainer Stephen Doody who took out the first two races of today’s Manawatu meeting. “It was a good day, they all went pretty well and a couple should be well placed for next week after today’s runs,” said Doody. In the first event of the day Doody trained and drove Johnny Who to win the Matt Hickey Club Patron Handicap Trot over 2500 metres. “He’s gone pretty good today and it helped that a few fell away a bit later in the race,” said Doody, “he can be a bit lazy and I actually thought he might have been done up the straight but he kept battling on and then pricked his ears again and was able to get there.” As the highest rated horse in the race, Johnny Who had a 50 metre handicap to overcome, but after stepping away well, Doody was able to take an economical trip on the marker pegs to end up mid field after 600 metres. With the leading Kiss My Pixel setting a strong pace, Johnny Who continued to progress forward only shifting to the one wide line with around 600 metres to run. On the final bend the gelding briefly tracked the favourite Elizabeth Hill before shifting three wide to level with her. It was a two horse battle up the straight with Johnny Who battling on to get over the top of a tiring Elizabeth Hill in the final stages and win by half a length. “He’s a nice horse and has done a really good job for us,” said Doody, “he’ll probably head back up to Cambridge for his next start in the Thames Trotting Cup.” The four-year-old gelding by What The Hill now has six wins to his name alongside 10 placings and earnings of $57,000. Just half an hour later Doody trained his second winner of the day with Doo You Want Me taking out the Book For Xmas Function 12 December Mobile Pace. “He’s a nice little horse and his last start at Cambridge was good leading into this so I expected a good run today and earning the 2YO Bonus on top of his winning stakes is great too,” said Doody, “he’s a lovely little horse, he works well and runs good times and I think he’ll be amongst the better batch of the team.” Driven by leading North Island junior driver Crystal Hackett, the two-year-old gelding capitalised on his ace starting draw to fire off the mobile and lead where he remained for the duration of the event. With around 400 metres to run, Amazing Captain issued a three wide challenge, but Doo You Want Me was too good and with minimal urging from Hackett was able to clinch his maiden win by 0.75 metres. From five starts the Captain Crunch gelding looks a progressive type, placing third and second at Cambridge in his two starts prior to today’s win. “He’ll have a few days off now and I’ll sit down and plan where he’ll head next,” said Doody, “Time will be his friend, he’s got a bit of growing to do yet and will be better as a three-year-old.” The father-son combo of Michael and Wilson House who are a dominant force when they head to Manawatu, also scored a winning double with Delta Kilo earning his maiden win in the Chief Stipe Gale Mobile Pace, and Gotta Elect Bill scoring his fifth lifetime win in the Stephen Doody Racing Stables Mobile Pace. Racing returns to the Manawatu next Monday, November 11. View the full article
  20. By Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk For a horse named after an All Black first five, Mo’unga produced a 10 out of 10 performance in this afternoon’s Alabar Kaikoura Cup. The Bettor’s Delight five-year-old made it nine wins from just 21 starts and put himself very much in the frame for a IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup call up at Addington Raceway next Tuesday. Trained by Regan Todd and driven by Robbie Close, Mo’unga started well and went to the lead before getting the perfect trail behind Tact McLeod. He then left them to it, winning by four lengths. “It worked out perfectly,” said Todd post race, “he won super.” “We’ll now have a good think about the Cup and next Tuesday.” One of the outsiders Mossdale Ben charged up the passing lane to grab second while Australian visitor and Auckland Cup winner Better Eclipse was involved in a scrimmage early and produced a huge run for driver Greg Sugars to grab third. Mystic Max goes back to back Earlier Mystic Max went back-to-back in the day’s feature trot at Kaikoura. 22. By Adam Hamilton In the most extraordinary of twists, star Aussie pacer Swayzee is set to return to defend his $1m IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup crown at Addington next Tuesday. Uncertainty over long-time favourite and Swayzee’s half-brother Leap To Fame’s trip, prompted the stunning change of plans by trainer Jason Grimson. Grimson confirmed he and owner Mick Boots would make the required $NZ28,500 late entry fee for Swayzee before cut-off time for the final acceptance payment tomorrow (Tuesday). Adding to the theatre, Swayzee will race in the $60,000 Cherry City Cup at Young on Friday night before boarding a plane to Auckland and then on to Christchurch on Sunday. It will mean Swayzee will have a seven-hour return road trip to Young on Friday – just four days before the NZ Cup – before embarking on two flights to get from Sydney to Christchurch. Swayzee hasn’t raced since his powerhouse win in the Group 1 Victoria Cup at Melton on October 12. Grimson had previously ruled out returning to NZ so he can focus on chasing a $1 million bonus for winning all five legs of the NSW Carnival of Cups. Swayzee won the opening leg of the series at Parkes on September 20 and Friday night’s race is Young is the second leg. Ideally, Grimson wanted to wait until a final decision on Leap To Fame’s trip, but he doesn’t have that luxury with the final field declared on Wednesday. Leap To Fame, who was scratched from the Victoria Cup Swayzee won because of a virus, was pulled off a planned flight to NZ last weekend because of another health scare. His trainer-driver Grant Dixon had another blood test done today and tomorrow’s results will determine whether he takes Leap To Fame to NZ. “He seems great. I can’t fault him. He’ll fast work in the morning and then it all comes down to how the blood look. If they’re good, he’ll go,” he said. Betting on the Cup was thrown into chaos with the Swayzee news. Swayzee has been added to the NZ Cup market at $2.80. Leap To Fame eased from $1.70 to $2 as a result. The best Kiwi-trained chance is Merlin at $3.50. View the full article
  23. Athabascan has been scratched from the 2024 Melbourne Cup due to heart rhythm issue With the 2024 Melbourne Cup less then 24 hours away the big $8.56 million race faced a setback as Athabascan was pulled out from the 3200 metre Lexus Melbourne Cup due, to a heart rhythm issue identified by Racing Victorias veterinarians during pre race checks. During the inspection process, by RV veterinarians the horse trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton revealed an unusual heartbeat anomaly. The ECG reports and blood test findings were shared with three internal medicine specialists who specialise in cardiology. All three specialists suggested that Athabascan should undergo further extensive testing before being permitted to race again on the grounds of safety. RV veterinarians took into account details provided by the stable and advised that it would be best for the horse to withdraw from participating in the Melbourne Cup due, to a higher likelihood of experiencing a heart related incident during the race. All of the 23 other horse have been inspected and are fit to race in the 2024 Melbourne Cup. 2024 Melbourne Cup Final Field 1.
