Fresh off a pleasing Melbourne campaign, the Peter and Shaun McKay-trained Wolfgang (NZ) (Puccini) will head to Ellerslie on Tuesday where he will contest the Gr.3 Balmerino Stakes (2000m). The six-year-old son of Puccini finished sixth in the Gr.2 Herber Power Stakes (2400m) before running fourth in the Gr.3 Geelong Cup (2400m), and has thrived since returning to New Zealand. “I was intending to put him out for three or four days, but first day out he started bucking and kicking and carrying on, so he came straight back in again,” Peter McKay said. “He has come through it (Melbourne trip) really well. His first run was really good, we decided to ride a bit handier next time and was hoping to get in, but it just didn’t work out for him. He was out punching the breeze the whole way, kicked on the corner and a couple of decent horses beat him home. To be running close to them we needed to have had an economical run. I was rapt with his run. “It was his first time away over there and he has coped with it well and hopefully he can have another campaign next year where he will be a little bit of a stronger stayer.” Wolfgang will jump from barrier nine on Tuesday with Michael McNab aboard and has been installed a $4.40 second favourite for the race behind Habana ($4.20). “It is just going to come down to how he can get in and if he can get a bit of cover,” McKay said. “It is not going to be easy from the 2000m, it is not far to the first corner. There is a bit of speed in the race, there are a couple in there that run a bit early so they might split the field a little bit.” The McKays are also hopeful of a bold showing from stablemate Strange Love (NZ) (Rock ‘n’ Pop), who takes two runner-up performances into the Champion 2YO Sword Of State 1400. “She has gone really good runs,” McKay said. “She has raced once or twice right-handed. The first time was only her second start, and she drew a wide gate and was a bit green. Her next start didn’t go too well, she jumped out and bucked. She had never done it before, so I just put it to a bad day out. “She works both ways economically so hopefully she will be near the lead, and she is pretty happy there.” McKay will also be represented by Santa Catalina and Subiaco in the Auckland Co-Op Taxis 1600, Don Pauly in the NZB Ready To Run Sale Trainers Series 1600, and Final Impact in the Barfoot & Thompson 2400. “I was happy with the way Santa Catalina finished (last start when third), I was happy she was finding the line and I am guessing that is what she could be doing tomorrow with some good ones in there,” McKay said. “If she could run in the first three I will be very happy. “Sabiaco is in the same race. The well-renowned colours of The Oaks Stud will feature across two feature Trans-Tasman meetings this week, kicking off with Antrim Coast (NZ) (Roc De Cambes) lining up in the Listed Furphy Plate (1800m) on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington. A homebred son of resident sire Roc De Cambes, Antrim Coast flourished in the latter stages of his three-year-old term, finishing second to Orchestral in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) before winning the Gr.2 Alistair Clark Stakes (2040m) and finishing fourth in the Gr.1 South Australian Derby (2500m). Antrim Coast was initially trained by Cambridge horseman Stephen Marsh, but following his three-year-old campaign, The Oaks Stud General Manager Rick Williams opted to leave the gelding in Australia in the care of Steve Richards. “There were so many different options for him over there,” Williams said. “He finished the season with a rating of 98, which meant he was going to be topweight in most of the handicaps in New Zealand, where in Australia, he can run in a Listed race and not be in that position. “There were choices in every state for him, it was just down to opportunities.” Antrim Coast was galloped on when resuming in the Seymour Cup (1600m) last month, providing an explanation for an uncharacteristic performance, and Williams has faith the gelding will have plenty to offer in Tuesday’s contest. “He had a big three-year-old year then was galloped on in his first run back in the Seymour Cup, so he had a legitimate excuse,” Williams said. “It happened very early in the race, Mick Dee (jockey) said he didn’t feel right and we found out afterwards. Fortunately, it wasn’t career-ending and it wasn’t the tendon, he’s fine now. “We feel he is a great each-way chance tomorrow, he’s at false odds at $41 definitely. “The only reservation is we’ve seen horses that have had a tough three-year-old year often don’t come up as four-year-olds in the spring, but all other indicators would be that he’ll go a big race. “We’re going to keep going up in distance, he ran at a mile in the Seymour Cup and the 1800m is short of his best trip, but Flemington second-up, we’d like to think we’ll see something from him tomorrow.” Williams’ son Dean is an assistant trainer to Richards, and he, alongside The Oaks Stud principal Dick Karreman, have been supportive of the growing stable. “Dean and Steve have a couple of young ones there for us, one I bought myself with a few mates, and Dick has given him a Pierro filly, they’re just babies,” Williams said. “They’ve only got seven boxes at the moment so that’s all he can train with Steve, but we are hoping they can get 13 boxes which would be enough. At the moment, he’s just starting out like everyone else, and hopefully Antrim Coast can give him a good kick-on tomorrow.” Later in the week, The Oaks will turn their focus towards the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), where their colt Savaglee (NZ) (Savabeel) will aim to cap off a phenomenal spring campaign. The son of Savabeel is trained by Pam Gerard, who has prepared him to win both the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) and Gr.2 Sarten Memorial (1400m) in the lead-up to Saturday’s feature at Riccarton Park. “I’d say he’ll improve off the run in the Sarten and Pam had him that way, that he’ll keep improving,” Williams said. “I don’t think right-handed is his favourite way of going, but he might get better at that with time. He’s done everything right and he’s improved in every race, he’ll go into Saturday spot-on I think. Hopefully, he can give a career-best performance. “He is a very intelligent horse, he’s become more and more professional in the way he races. Last year’s Melbourne Cup Day concluded in success for Mark Walker in the Gr.3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m), a race he will chase back-to-back crowns in on Tuesday with Kiwi mare Quintessa (NZ) (Shamus Award). Walker won the mare’s feature with Group One winner Skew Wiff, a memory he looks back on fondly. “It’s massive to win any race on Melbourne Cup Day, the atmosphere is electric with 100,000 people there, so it would be nice to get a winner this year if we can,” he said. Walker will be represented in this year’s edition by Quintessa, a winner of the Gr.1 Levin Classic (1600m) and Gr.3 Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) during her three-year-old term, which also included fourth placings in the Gr.1 Australian Guineas (1600m) and Gr.1 Australian Oaks (1400m). The Shamus Award mare resumed in formidable fashion as a four-year-old when winning the Gr.3 Cockram Stakes (1200m), but was marred by rain-affected tracks in the Gr.2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) and Gr.2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m). “We’ve just struck wet tracks in the last two starts and I think that has been against her, it’ll definitely be a dry track tomorrow so I think she can bounce back,” Walker said. “The draw (18) is not very helpful, but I think she’s capable of going a good race. Her odds are certainly not how I see her in the race.” Midnight Blue (So You Think), a last-start Listed Seymour Cup (1600m) winner, will carry the tangerine silks in the Listed Furphy Plate (1800m) earlier on the Flemington card. “We bought him as a tried horse and he was quite out of form, so it’s been quite a challenge to turn that around and was very satisfying to do so,” Walker said. “He’s a lovely old horse and his first-up win was very good, sometimes second-up they can be a bit more one-paced, but he gets in reasonably well at the weights also.” Completing Te Akau’s Australian representation will be promising filly Stage ‘N’ Screen (NZ) (Ace High), who won comfortably on debut at Seymour in mid-October. The daughter of Ace High was scratched from the Gr.3 The TAB Vanity (1400m) on Derby Day, instead favouring Tuesday’s Listed The Amanda Elliot (1400m) with Michael Dee in the saddle. “We had trialled her in New Zealand and she looked quite promising, she just had a few barrier issues,” Walker said. “We’ve got that sorted out with the help of Julian Welsh, he’s a barrier guru over here and she’s been a lot better. “We scratched her on Saturday from the wide draw and we thought this race was more suitable.” Back in New Zealand, Walker and New Zealand training partner Sam Bergerson will have a trio of representatives at Ellerslie, including stakes-bound stayer Cognito (So You Think) in the Powerturf 1500. The So You Think gelding won the Gr.2 Wellington Guineas (1400m) of 2023, and pleased Walker with a strong return to form at the course behind Meaningful Star on October 26. “He’s coming back to form and building up nicely, after tomorrow he’ll run in the Counties Cup (Gr.3, 2100m),” he said. “We think he’s in good form and should be able to get a nice race this season.” Walker also has a long-term staying feature in his sights for Altari (NZ) (Savabeel), a Savabeel three-year-old who takes his place in the TAB 1400. “He’s quite a nice horse, we gelded him and he’s just going to get better and better as a lot of Savabeels do with age,” he said. “We think he has a very nice season ahead of him. “We do think that he could end up a Derby (Gr.1, 2400m) horse, so we’ll give him a preparation towards that.” In the final race of the day, Wolverine (NZ) (Tivaci) will carry the 60kg top-weight in the Head To Trackside.co.nz 1400. A Group One-performing juvenile, the mare has been out of the winner’s circle for some time but was only narrowly denied by Sterling Express at Rotorua in the hands of Ngakau Hailey, who retains the ride. “She raced well last start,” Walker said. “She’s been a difficult horse to work because she’s a hard-pulling horse in trackwork, but Dan Miller has got her going really nicely lately so she should be a nice each-way chance.” View the full article

The Subzero Handicap (1400m), a race solely for registered grey thoroughbreds, has proven to be a fan favourite at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, and this year, Kiwis will have their own grey to barrack for. Popular grey gelding Chattahoochee (NZ) (Reliable Man) has developed a cult following back in New Zealand where he has won six races and was runner-up in the Gr.3 Easter Handicap (1600m) earlier this year for Te Awamutu trainer Debbie Sweeney. The son of Reliable Man was building towards a trip across the Tasman this preparation, and the decision was made to book his ticket following his placing behind Group One winner Mustang Valley at Tauranga last month. He has subsequently entered the care of Cranbourne trainer Cindy Alderson, and Sweeney said she has received positive reports since his arrival. “He is with Cindy Alderson and she is very happy with him. I have kept in touch and have seen videos, and he has been working well,” Sweeney said. “He looks nice and happy and has settled in well to the different environment. Last year I went over to Cindy’s and her place is similar to ours, she has got a paddock there for him and he likes to be out in a paddock. She is a really nice lady and has got a really nice set-up.” Sweeney said the race shapes nicely for Chattahoochee, who was given the tick of approval by Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Craig Williams following a trial last week. “Craig Williams rode him in a trial last Monday and he was really happy with him,” she said. “He was really complimentary of him and said what a lovely horse he was. “He is dropping back to 1400m, which will be interesting, but he has been freshened-up for that. “It is a rating 90 race, and he is the second highest rated horse in the race, so he is quite well off in that race.” Chattahoochee has already started to accrue a following in Australia and has proven to be a coveted ride for Tuesday’s race named after 1992 Melbourne Cup hero Subzero. “It sounds like he has got a few fans over there as well now too,” Sweeney said. “Everyone seems to fall in love with him wherever he goes. There were quite a lot of people chasing the ride on him.” Sweeney is particularly excited for his owners Lisa Anderson and Bryan Black, and is hoping their charge can get the chocolates for them on Tuesday. “It is great for the owners,” she said. “Mr (Bryan) Black is a big supporter of the industry and so is Lisa, so it is great for them to have a horse in on Melbourne Cup Day, you don’t get that opportunity very often. It is exciting that it is a grey race too, which makes it a bit more interesting as well.” Tuesday’s race could be a hit-and-run mission for Chattahoochee, however, Sweeney said he may have another run before heading home. “It will be up to the owners and what they want to do, but I know Cindy possibly has one race planned for him after Tuesday, so we will just see,” she said. Te Akau and Fortuna Racing’s filly Bellatrix Star (Star Witness) proved she is among Australia’s top sprinting three-year-olds last Saturday at Flemington, finishing second in the A$2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). The daughter of Star Witness was a Group Two winner during her juvenile term in New Zealand, but since relocating across to Mark Walker’s Cranbourne stable this season, she has gone to a new level with victories in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m), Gr.3 Scarborough Stakes (1200m) and Gr.2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m). Her impeccable form gave Walker confidence to press on to the feature and the filly rewarded that faith, settling near the tail of the field before surging down the inside of the track to finish 2-3/4 lengths behind a highly-impressive Switzerland, and ahead of Gr.1 The Everest (1200m) placegetter Growing Empire and Gr.1 Golden Slipper (1200m) winner Lady Of Camelot. The performance earned Bellatrix Star a further A$350,000 in stakes, bringing her total to just shy of $1 million, after being purchased for just $80,000 by David Ellis and Fortuna out of Phoenix Park’s 2023 Karaka Yearling Sales’ draft. Walker was thrilled with the effort, while indicating that the Flemington crowd may not have seen the last of Bellatrix Star over Melbourne Cup Week. “She ran terrific, the colt (Switzerland) was just too good for us on the day, but she’s probably run to her career-best even though she’s run second,” Walker said. “She might actually run on Saturday in the Champions Sprint (Gr.1, 1200m), we are nominating her and will make up our mind on Wednesday morning whether to accept. She’ll get in at a very light weight against the older horses. “She went straight to the beach facility here after the races on Saturday, she’ll spend three days there walking in the sea to help her recover and goes out in the paddock during the day. “She’ll come back into the stable on Wednesday afternoon.” Walker won last year’s A$3 million Gr.1 Champions Sprint (1200m) with superstar mare Imperatriz, and ahead of nominations, New Zealand’s TAB have Bellatrix Star rated a $11 hope, with 2024 Everest runner-up Giga Kick on top at $4.20. Grant Cooksley came tantalisingly close to getting his hands on the Melbourne Cup as a jockey, and he is hoping to rectify that on Tuesday as a trainer when he lines-up Trust In You (NZ) (Sweynesse) in the two-mile feature. The South Auckland horseman rode in several editions of the time-honoured race, including a runner-up performance behind Kingston Rule in 1990 aboard the Murray Baker-trained The Phantom. This week Cooksley, who trains in partnership with Bruce Wallace, will have his chance to go one better in the race courtesy of Group Three winner Trust In You. The six-year-old son of Sweynesse, who won the Gr.3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m) at Pukekohe on New Year’s Day, heads into the Melbourne Cup in good form after finishing fourth in the Gr.1 Metropolitan (2400m) and Gr.3 St Leger Stakes (2600m) at Randwick in his last two outings, and Cooksley is hoping he can continue his rich vein of form on Tuesday. “He is going along alright,” said an understated Cooksley. “The owners want him there and he has done well to get there. It is a good race with a good crowd. Hopefully he can go a good race, which he should do.” Trust In You will be Cooksley’s first Melbourne Cup runner as a trainer, and he said there is a bit more pressure involved compared to being a jockey in the great race. “You have got more to worry about when you are training them,” he said. Trust In You will be ridden by former New Zealand-based jockey Mark Du Plessis, and is currently a $101 outsider for the Melbourne Cup with TAB bookmakers alongside fellow Kiwi hope Positivity, while Waikato stayer Sharp ‘N’ Smart is at $61. While the A$8.6 million Melbourne Cup will be Cooksley’s main priority on Tuesday, back home in New Zealand he will have five representatives at Ellerslie. Moving Melody has placed in her two starts this preparation after winning on debut back in June, and has been installed a $4 favourite for the Stella Artois 1100. Pre-post favourite Habana (Zoustar) will head into unfamiliar territory at Ellerslie, but there is confidence in his camp that it will be a smooth transition. The six-year-old has fashioned an impressive record up to 1600m and will step out of his comfort zone for the first time on Tuesday when he runs in the Gr.3 Balmerino Stakes (2000m). All the key indicators strongly suggest the son of Zoustar will be just as effective over more ground, which will also be very much to the liking of his stablemate and race rival Terra Mitica. The pair are trained by Lance Noble for Cambridge Stud, with Habana the more fancied of the duo following his close last-start second over a mile on the course. “This race will give us a nice opportunity to see if he will get the 2000m and I think he will,” Noble said. “The way he races, he always hits the line and he’s gone well at Ellerslie before so it’s a good chance to test the waters.” Habana has won eight of his 21 starts with victories in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) and the Listed Fulton Family Mile (1600m) on his CV. “He relaxes in his races and most of the time he wins by a head or gets beaten by a short margin and that’s because he can hit the front and loaf,” Noble said. “Over 2000m, he should have something to chase and we think he’ll be competitive, especially at weight-for-age which suits him a lot better now.” Should Habana perform up to expectations in the hands of regular rider Warren Kennedy, the Gr.1 Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic (2000m) on Boxing Day will be a summer target. Barnmate Terra Mitica made good progress last season with a pair of middle-distance open handicap victories and finished fourth in the Gr.3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m). The imported mare will appreciate the step up in distance after three unplaced lead-up outings. “We haven’t had the rub of the green with her yet this prep, I’m keen on the Counties Cup (Gr.3, 2100m) and couldn’t really find another 2000m race for her before that,” Noble said. “Fresh-up, they ran her off their feet and second-up it was a really wet track and then she drew the outside and was caught wide. “Her form line looks terrible for one of our horses, but she’s much better than that.” There is also a renewal of a successful association for Cambridge Stud with visiting jockey Kevin Stott, who won the Gr.1 Royal Ascot Jubilee Stakes (1200m) aboard Hello Youmzain before he embarked on his stallion career. “Warren is obviously our retained jockey and when Kevin came out here, we said if there was a chance to give him a ride or two then we would be more than happy to,” Noble said. “He’s a very accomplished jockey and an English rider with an English horse might be the key.” Noble also has a top chance at Ellerslie with Frostfair, who is likely to run in the Champion 2YO Sword Of State (1400m) in preference to the Stella Artois Handicap (1100m). “Unfortunately, Warren was committed to his wife’s horse (Subtle Power) in the 1400m and Frostfair drew three in that,” Noble said. “She drew 11 out of 11 in the 1100m and we’ve got Vinnie Colgan on in the 1400 so we’re leaning toward that. “She is very well and has had a couple of wide barriers without much luck in the running and she hasn’t been out of the first four in her life, so I’m sure she’ll be competitive.” View the full article
