Talented Kiwi mare Positivity (NZ) (Almanzor) will step out on the greatest stage for stayers at Flemington on Tuesday, when she contests the A$8 million Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m). In the care of highly-respected Cambridge trainer Andrew Forsman, Positivity has been racing for less than twelve months, but came a long way in a short period of time as an autumn three-year-old. The Almanzor filly won the Gr.3 Sunline Vase (2100m) and finished second in the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m), before crossing the Tasman and winning the Gr.3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) at Morphettville. The mare has been based at Forsman’s Flemington stable through the spring, placing in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) and winning the Gr.3 MRC Foundation Cup (2000m), which earned her an automatic place in the A$5 million Gr.1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). Forsman had every intention of running his mare in the Caulfield Cup, but she was unfortunately scratched due to a bruised heel, instead running in the Gr.2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) the following Friday, where she finished eighth. “It was just bad timing as much as anything, she bruised a heel in her final gallop and she had to trot-up perfectly sound for the vets that afternoon, which she didn’t,” Forsman said. “They gave her a grace of 24 hours before trying again later on the Friday, and she still wasn’t 100% right, so we elected to miss that race, which probably set her back a bit going into the Mooney Valley Gold Cup. “It wasn’t her best performance there, but she had to work hard early to sit outside a very hot speed, I think it may have even been a race record. The leader stopped and she then had to cart the field up, she boxed on well but the effort she did early in the race told on her late. “I thought, given the circumstances leading into it and how the race unfolded, the run had plenty of merit.” In preparation for her first attempt at two miles, Positivity was given two public hit-outs at Flemington and Werribee through this week, both of which pleased Forsman. “She had a good gallop on the Flemington course proper on Tuesday morning for a nice hit-out there,” he said. “She went to Werribee for an exhibition gallop between races on Friday which was her final piece of fast work, then Winona Costin came and gave her a bit of three-quarter pace this morning. “She’s pretty well ready to go.” Costin was set to ride Positivity in the Caulfield Cup and will be afforded the opportunity again on Tuesday, where the mare has drawn barrier 20 and will carry just 50kg. “We were hoping for a better barrier draw, but there’s not much we can do about that now,” Forsman said. “She’ll need a bit of luck from there, but the key is finding a bit of cover, hopefully she can settle and relax well. When you are running two miles for the first time, you want to give them every chance to see the trip out.” Forsman has plenty of big-race experience in Australia having won the likes of the Caulfield Cup, Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m) and Gr.1 Champions Mile (1600m) while in partnership with Murray Baker, and ahead of the race, he emphasised the challenge a race like the Melbourne Cup presents. “It’s great, while the plan and preparation hasn’t been perfect, it’s still great to be a part of it,” he said. “You know that going into a Melbourne Cup, you can never be too confident, it’s a big field and you need a lot of luck. Peter Lock’s fast-improving sprinter Debit (NZ) (Darci Brahma) collected her third win on the bounce at Trentham on Saturday, winning the On Track 1200 with some authority. The five-year-old by Darci Brahma has appeared at the races on just four occasions, breaking her maiden on June of 2023, and was not seen at the races again until this October, where she returned in winning fashion at Hawera. Stepping up to Rating 75 company, Debit was well-fancied in a compact six-horse contest, closing the $2.50 second-favourite behind Fancypants ($2.40). In the hands of Lily Sutherland, who picked up a winning treble across the Trentham meeting, Debit jumped away positively and controlled the tempo as the field descended down the outer of the heavy surface. The mare was travelling comfortably as they straightened, and when she needed to kick, she found plenty for Sutherland to hold off Fancypants by three-quarters of a length. Lock was delighted with the performance, indicating he holds Debit in as high a regard as his multiple Group Three winner and Group One performer Hiflyer. “It’s quite a big thrill, because I race him with a really good mate of mine and a long-time client Trevor (Sargent),” Lock said. “We’ve been racing horses for 40 years, silly enough we gave the mother away, but she’s doing a great job. “Looking at it today, I honestly don’t think she was really happy in the ground, we were very lucky to have Lily on board, she’s a good senior rider. “I think this horse is the next-best I’ve had since Hiflyer, I hope so anyway because we’ve had a lot of fun with her and a couple of good mates to go with it. “She always gives you a kick, even in trackwork. She’s always competitive, she wants to be a racehorse and tries hard all the time.” From her four starts, Debit has recorded three wins and a third placing, bringing her earnings just over $55,000 for Lock, Sargent and Rod Conning. Numbers have been released for the 2024 Breeders' Cup World Championships, with total all-sources, global common-pool handle for the two-day event at $179,218,631, marking a 1.7% bettering of the 2023 total handle. The 41st running of the Breeders' Cup was held Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar, while the 2023 event was held at Santa Anita. The 2024 handle of $179,218,631 marked the third-highest in Breeders' Cup history since the event went to two days in 2007. Only the 2022 event at Keeneland (with $189,060,373 in handle) and the 2021 event at Del Mar (with $182,908,409) in handle have topped it. Total common-pool handle on Saturday's 12-race Breeders' Cup card was $115,538,687, with Friday's 10-race card ringing in at $63,679,944. On-track handle for both days was $18,450,724. Attendance is capped at Del Mar with Saturday's attendance ringing in at 36,436 and the total two-day attendance at 67,418. The Breeders' Cup will return to Del Mar in 2025. The last time it was held back to back at the same track was in 2012-14, when Santa Anita hosted for three years in a row. The Shoemaker Award goes to the jockey who rides the most winners in the 14 Championship races with the tiebreaker being a 10-3-1 point system for second- through fourth-place finishes. Prat and Ryan Moore each won two races but thanks to a runner-up effort on Raging Sea (Curlin) in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff took the tiebreaker from Moore. Prat's victories came back-to-back Saturday afternoon with Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic and Moira (Ghostzapper) in the GI Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Prat also had two thirds with Domestic Product (Practical Joke) in the GI Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and Mullikin (Violence) in the GI Cygames Breeders' Cup Sprint.
