The formidable training partnership of Brian and Shane Anderton will be out in force at their local meeting at Wingatui on Tuesday, for the hugely successful meeting run annually on Melbourne Cup Day. With many first-time or once-a-year racegoers in attendance, following runners from the Anderton team often brings plenty of success as they perform with distinction on their home patch. “It’s going to be a big day for the stable if the weather improves, as most of our runners are looking for improved track conditions,” Shane Anderton said. “The track is rated a Heavy10 at present, but the forecast is for plenty of sun over the next couple of days so we’re hoping it can get back to a Slow8 at least. “It’s an advantage being able to race at home as the horses don’t have any travel worries and ten minutes after they have raced, they are back in their box or paddock so there is a lot less stress on them. “We’ve got a dozen nominated and we’d like to see them all go around as there are a few kicking off new campaigns and are ready to go.” While the team has entries in eight of the 10 races carded, punters may have to wait for the stable’s best chance to step out in the last of the day, with promising four-year-old Our Approval (NZ) (Ghibellines) lining up for just his fourth start following back-to-back wins at Oamaru and Wingatui. “He (Our Approval) is a horse who has come a long way in a very short time and has looked good doing it,” Anderton said. “He is a real improver and has to step up another grade on Tuesday, but if he keeps progressing the way he has, he can be pretty competitive. “He gets through the wet okay but if the track can dry out then that would suit him nicely.” Anderton is also keen to see class performers Capo Dell Impero (NZ) (Ghibellines) and Burgie (NZ) (Ghibellines) put in good showings in the main race on the day, the Grand Casino (1400m), as both could feature during Riccarton’s New Zealand Cup Week Carnival later in the month. “Burgie holds a nomination for the Gr.3 TAB Mile (1600m) on the middle day at Riccarton, but she would have to look good on Tuesday for us to take her to Christchurch,” he said. “She definitely has the ability, although she hasn’t shown that in the spring much before, as she has been troubled with seasonal issues and the like. “We have her in foal to our White Robe Lodge resident stallion Ancient Spirit which has really settled her down. She is also a mare that finds new ways to get into trouble during a race so we’re hoping she can get out of that habit for her last campaign. “Capo Dell Impero is in a position where he has to carry the grandstand at the top of the handicaps every time he steps out which doesn’t help him. “When he is right, he is a very handy horse and if he goes okay then we might find a race for him at Cup Week as well.” Anderton also nominated maiden Lined Satin (NZ) (Ghibellines) as a good chance to kick the day off for the team in the first on the card. “Lined Satin went a ripper in her only two-year-old start when finishing second and after a spell she came back well to run fourth first up at home here last month,” he said. “She steps up in distance and if she can strike a reasonable track, I’d expect her to go well to get our day started.” View the full article

The MyRacehorse contingent, chatting their horse's name, flooded the winner's circle at Del Mar as they celebrated a signature score by Straight No Chaser (Speightster–Margarita Friday, by Johannesburg) in the GI Cygames Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar on Saturday. The 5-year-old got rolling behind pacesetter Federal Judge (Army Mule). By the far turn, the Dan Blacker trainee started to make his run at the leaders, which included Bentornato (Valiant Minister). Fully loaded down the lane, Straight No Chaser found his best stride and won by half a length over Bentornato. Mullikin (Violence) ran on to get third. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That was the case for Canadian Horse of the Year MOIRA (Ghostzapper–Devine Aida, by Unbridled's Song) as she took the lead in her third attempt in the GI Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, before driving home a half-length winner for her first Grade I tally at Del Mar Saturday. In so doing, the 5-1 shot held off the late rush of Godolphin's Cinderella's Dream (GB) (Shamardal), who nosed out Didia (Arg) (Orpen) for second. The final time for the $2-million 1 3/8-mile race was 2:14.95. Owned by X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables, LLC and SF Racing, LLC, the 5-year-old mare is trained by Kevin Attard, who also saddled Saturday's pacesetter Full Count Felicia (War Front). Bred by Adena Springs in Ontario, the 2022 Woodbine Oaks and Queen's Plate heroine sold for $150,000 as a yearling to X-Men Racing. European shipper Jayarebe (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) died following the running of Saturday's GI Breeders' Cup Turf. The 3-year-old finished the race, but collapsed during the gallop out. According to a statement put out by the Breeders' Cup, Jayarebe suffered what appears to have been a cardiac event. He was immediately attended to by a team of veterinary experts led by Dr. Brent Cassady, but unfortunately passed away. His jockey, Sean Levey, was uninjured. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to Jayarebe's connections and the many fans whose lives he touched,” read the statement. Trained by Brian Mehan, the colt was 4-for-7 lifetime with his biggest win coming in the Oct. 5 G2 Prix Dollar at Longchamp. The respective winners from Friday's GI FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile–Citizen Bull (Into Mischief)–and the GI NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies–Immersive (Nyquist), will look down the road to their 3-year-old seasons with the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Kentucky Oaks the target. Trainer Bob Baffert said he knew that Citizen Bull was ready to take on the field at Del Mar, but all week he was careful to not tip his hand too much. His experience with 'TDN Rising Star' Muth (Good Magic), who skipped the Derby and scratched because of a fever the week of the GI Preakness Stakes, is a fresh reminder for him about expectations. “Last year, we thought Muth couldn't lose, and Fierceness kicked the hell out of us,” Baffert said. “These are hard races to win.” The Hall of Fame trainer said that it is exciting to be on the trail to May, but it is too far off at this point. “That is why we work so hard,” said Baffert. “All my people want to play at the top level. We feel very fortunate just to get one of these.” As for the favorite in the Juvenile, 'TDN Rising Star' East Avenue (Medaglia d'Oro), the colt is in good shape despite an unlucky run. According to his trainer Brendan Walsh, the goal of getting to the Derby is still the focus with races along the way. “He's fine, we'll move on,” Walsh said. Immersive A Slam Dunk In Fillies In the Juvenile Fillies, Immersive won by 4 1/2 lengths and trainer Brad Cox confirmed that now-three-time Grade I winner came out of the race in good shape. “I think 2-year-old fillies, she's the best we've had,” said Cox. “To accomplish what she has, we've not had one win three Grade 1s at 2. We're excited about what she accomplished, proud of her, and looking forward to next year.” Immersive wins the $2 Million @NetJets #BreedersCup Juvenile Fillies on #FutureStarsFriday at @delmarracing! As maligned as any member of the current crop of 3-year-old males, 'TDN Rising Star' SIERRA LEONE (c, 3, Gun Runner–Heavenly Love, by Malibu Moon) took advantage of a lightning-fast pace up ahead of him, picked off rivals one by one on the final turn and outgamed fellow 'Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light) to take Saturday's GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar. A fast midweek blowout from 2023 Classic runner-up Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits) dictated that the chestnut would at least be part of the pace, but he was actually fastest of the fast, making the running from Arthur's Ride (Tapit) and Mixto (Good Magic) as Fierceness and GI Kentucky Derby third Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) raced right on top of the tempo, the former out wide and the latter enjoying a rail-skimming run. Derma Sotogake was by the half-mile in a suicidal :44.96, and already passing the 3 1/2-furlong marker, Flavien Prat had Sierra Leone in full gear and he ran by his inside rivals as if they were standing still. Fierceness inherited the lead when Derma Sotogake called it a day approaching the stretch and set sail for home, but Sierra Leone was able to sustain his long run and got to the wire first. Forever Young was ridden along nearing the lane, but did not pick up as well as needed and was along late to touch Newgate (Into Mischief) out of third. City of Troy (Justify) was slowly away and was always in the second half of the field and never made any impact, finishing in about eighth position. Sierra Leone was following in the hoofprints of his sire, who won the 2017 Classic in front-running fashion in 2017. Sales history: $2,300,000 Ylg '22 FTSAUG. Lifetime Record: 9-4-3-2. Having run second on debut to 'TDN Rising Star' Impulse Buy (Speightstown) at Keeneland Oct. 5, Quantum Burst (Munnings) put in her own dazzling performance at second asking to secure a nod from the TDN to become the latest 'Rising Star' for her sire. Having changed barns from Eddie Kenneally to Brendan Walsh after that unveiling, and in no rush early after the jump, she launched her rally at the head of affairs and left her rivals in her wake, coming home to score as easily as she pleased in this Churchill Downs maiden. Quantum Burst went off at 9-2 odds for this start. O/B-Green Lantern Stables LLC; T-Brendan Walsh. Given a William Buick ride befitting one of the world's top middle-distance runners, Godolphin's REBEL'S ROMANCE (IRE) (g, 6, Dubawi {Ire}–Minidress {GB}, by Street Cry {Ire}) was sent into the lead a quarter mile from the finish and just outlasted Japan's Rousham Park (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) to add Saturday's GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf to his victory in the same race at Keeneland back in 2022. Alertly away from his wide draw, the handsome dark bay settled ahead of midfield in the early exchanges as longshot Cabo Spirit (Pioneerof the Nile) kicked on with it, but Buick clicked up Rebel's Romance on the turn, asking him to improve into a pace-pressing position entering the stretch for the first time. 'TDN Rising Star' Far Bridge (English Channel) enjoyed the run of the race as he tugged his way along from third. Traveling sweetly down the backstretch, Rebel's Romance was asked to kick approaching the final corner and smoothly took command entering the stretch. Well clear into the final furlong, the globetrotter was all out to hold off a final surge from Rousham Park to score by a half-length. Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) traveled to the inside of his commonly owned compatriot into the stretch and closed off well once into the clear to fill the runner-up spot for the second consecutive year. French raider Jayarebe (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) collapsed on the course while being pulled up and was loaded on to a horse ambulance. Lifetime Record: 22-15-0-1. O/B-Godolphin; T-Charlie Appleby.
