  1. Swindle and Triston Moodley put a space on the field to score at Te Rapa on Saturday. Photo: Megan Liefting (Race Images) Progressive mare Swindle had little favours at Te Rapa on Saturday, but that didn’t stop her from powering to victory for trainer Lauren Brennan. Jumping from barrier six, apprentice jockey Triston Moodley was assertive in the early stages aboard Swindle but was forced to sit three-wide in third, while Baronet and Winning For All set a solid tempo in front. Travelling boldly near the turn, Moodley let the mare roll outside the leaders and she sprinted clear at the 300 metres, keeping up a strong gallop in the heavy conditions to score with authority by two lengths. The sole three-year-old of the field, Itza Charmdeel, finished gamely into second followed by Winexpress. A winner at Rating 65 level in mid-May, Swindle has continued to race consistently amongst competitive fields up in grade and Brennan was delighted to see the mare rewarded. “I was watching from the stands, so when George (Simon, race commentator) was saying she was three-wide and doing it tough I was thinking ‘poor thing, she never gets a break’, she’s drawn wide at most of her starts,” Brennan said. “I said (to Triston) to try and sit behind the speed as there was a fair bit in the race, but he had no choice. When he asked her, she picked up really nicely and Triston’s riding really well at the moment. “I’m really happy with the run.” Initially planning on sending the daughter of Rageese for a spell, Brennan may reconsider upcoming plans for Swindle after such a commanding victory. “I was going to give her a break after today thinking she might have come to the end of it, but we’ll get her home now and see how she pulls up,” she said. Bred by Windsor Park Stud and owned by Lauren and Micky Brennan’s Monacurragh Lodge, Swindle increased her earnings to over $65,000 with three wins from 13 starts. The four-year-old is out of an O’Reilly mare in Code Black, who won twice over 1200m in Australia. The victory was Moodley’s 38th for the season, placing him firmly in third position behind frontrunners Lily Sutherland and Niranjan Parmar as the National Apprentice’s Premiership draws to a close next Wednesday. A five-win haul at the apprentice’s race-day at New Plymouth last month was a key highlight for Moodley, and the 23-year-old has his sights firmly set on the top spot next season. “It’s been my best season thus far and I’m just hoping to carry on into the next,” Moodley said. “My biggest goal (next season) is to try and win the premiership.” Horse racing news View the full article
  2. Dusty Road sailing across the line to win at Te Rapa on Saturday. Photo: Megan Liefting (Race Images) Dusty Road gave Graeme Cameron his first taste of Group One racing last year, and the Cambridge owner-trainer is keen to shoot for the stars again after a dominant performance at Te Rapa. Cameron arrived at Te Rapa on Saturday with eight training successes to his name, three of them from Dusty Road. That highly talented son of Shamexpress has also taken on some of New Zealand’s best with a midfield finish in the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m) as a three-year-old, followed earlier this season by a sixth in the Group 3 Spring Sprint (1400m) and a fifth in the Group 2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m). The Group 1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) at Hastings on September 7 is firmly circled in Cameron’s calendar this spring, and what he saw from Dusty Road on Saturday did nothing to change his mind. Sent out as a $2.10 favourite with horse betting sites for Te Rapa’s $40,000 open sprint, Dusty Road broke well from the starting gates and quickly took up a prominent position on the outside of the leader, Dubai Diva. Dusty Road pounced at the home turn and kicked away by more than two lengths. Eased down in the last couple of strides by apprentice jockey Liam Kauri, Dusty Road crossed the finish line a length ahead of the late-finishing Fonteyn. From 21 career starts, Dusty Road has recorded four wins and five placings, earning $120,515 for Cameron and his wife Jacky. “I don’t know if I’m going over the top or not, but I’m looking at the Tarzino,” Cameron said. “I think he deserves a go in that race. We’ll go straight there, rather than running in the Foxbridge Plate (Group 2, 1200m). “This horse is just a ripper. I think the 4kg claim did wonders for him today and it was a really good win. “We looked at Otaki today as well, but I thought this race really suited him. It’s just down the road, and he’ll be back in his paddock in an hour.” Saturday’s victory was also a notable result for the 25-year-old Kauri. The Central Districts apprentice has now outridden his 4kg claim with the 10th win of his career. “It’s good to finally lose the 4kg claim, it’s been a bit of a struggle but should be easier from here,” he said. “I didn’t really have to do anything today. I just sat on him. He jumped out of the gates himself and sorted himself out. I barely even had to steer him around the corners. He did it all himself.” Horse racing news View the full article
  3. Opawa Jack powers clear under Lily Sutherland at Otaki on Saturday. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images Palmerston North) Apprentice rider Lily Sutherland followed her pre-race instructions perfectly to land rugged four-year-old Opawa Jack an impressive winner of the Open 1600m event on the card at Otaki on Saturday. The Chrissy Bambry-prepared galloper had won three of his six stars in his current campaign and came into the event off the back of a win over the same distance at Wanganui earlier in the month. Sutherland and Bambry had walked the track prior to the first race and hatched a plan to have her guide the son of War Decree wider in the home straight to capitalise on potentially firmer footing than was available against the inside rail. Sutherland followed instructions to perfection as she set up a muddling pace on the $3.10 race favourite with horse racing bookmakers and angled to the outside fence rounding the home bend. Eventual runner-up Sacred Pearl followed her out there and the pair settled down to a decent tussle with Opawa Jack maintaining a strong gallop to land the major prize in the contest. Bambry was thrilled with the victory for a horse she believes has plenty more in store for him. “I didn’t know if there was a heap of speed in the race, but Lily knows him well and we walked the track this morning looking for the best ground and that’s exactly where she went,” Bambry said. “He still has a lot of maturing to do but he has come on heaps in this prep and he’s a good one.” Sutherland gave plenty of praise to her mount who she believes will be even more potent on a firmer surface. “He just bowls along at his own speed in front and he was going good enough to come out (wide),” she said. “He doesn’t like a wet track but is just going so well at the moment and I just tried to get as far out as I could for better ground as it’s pretty wet today.” Sutherland is in a decent fight for the National Apprentice Jockey premiership title with Niranjan Parmar as they go toe to toe with just two race days in the current season to go. Tied at the start of the day on 50 wins apiece the victory aboard Opawa Jack put Sutherland in front early in the day with racing left to come at Waverley on Sunday and Tauranga on Wednesday. Bred by southern racing legend Brian Anderton and his late wife Lorraine, Opawa Jack is out of the Nom Du Jeu mare Serve De Aunt and has now won six of his 23 career starts. 4. Public Attention wins on debut at Caulfield. Photo: Bruno Cannatelli A bold debut at Caulfield on Saturday has put Public Attention on a potential pathway towards the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at the same venue in October. Despite starting at $16 odds with horse racing bookmakers, the New Zealand-bred colt was held in high regard by trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr as he prepared to kick off his career. Public Attention justified his stable’s faith, settling three wide in fourth before warming into his work in the straight. He slowly but surely surged past the front-running Band Of Brothers and Azeele, hitting the lead in the final 50m and stretching out to score by just under half a length from the late-finishing Ndola. “The fact that we gave him his first start here today on a Saturday, against some good horses with proven form, gives you an idea of what we felt about this colt,” Price said. “We want him qualified for the better races that are coming up. “I would be going towards the Caulfield Guineas with him. He’s a beautiful, clean-winded horse. “He was a bit of a lighter, backward type of yearling when we bought him in New Zealand, and it probably took him 15 months before he started to morph into a real colt. But if you look at him now, he’s a beautiful horse. “Our pre-race thoughts were that he’s a black-type horse in the making, so that’s the direction we’ll be heading.” Public Attention was ridden to Saturday’s debut victory by Ethan Brown, who was impressed with his mount’s performance. “I think he’s well and truly a Guineas horse,” he said. “He’s a very nice colt. He covered a fair bit of ground today, but at the same time, I think he appreciated that bit of room. “He’s only going to improve. I heard that he was a bit of a handful while he was getting saddled up, but he switched on once I got on his back. He knew what his job was. He’ll definitely take improvement from this and should go on to measure up in better races.” Horse racing news View the full article

  6. Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday's Observations features a 1.5-million half to crack sprinter Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). 13.15 Ascot, Mdn, £50,000, 2yo, c/g, 6fT AL MISBAR (IRE) (Blue Point {Ire}) is a key member of the “Crocker Bulteel” Maiden that opens the King George card, being Godolphin's 1.5million gns Tattersalls October Book 1 half-brother to the stellar sprinter Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and his dual Group 3-winning and G1 Middle Park Stakes and G1 Prix Morny-placed full-brother The Antarctic (Ire). His trainer Charlie Appleby will have taken note of the fact that Richard Hannon has won six of the last nine runnings of this and that the East Everleigh handler puts forward Robert Barnett's homebred Our Terms (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), a son of the G2 Queen Mary Stakes and G2 Lowther Stakes winner Best Terms (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) who was fourth behind TDN Rising Star Field Of Gold (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) at Newmarket's July Festival. 7. In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of former multiple graded stakes hero Public Sector in the Great White North. Kingman's Public Sector Wins In Canada Michael and Jules Iavarone and co-owner Saffie Joseph, Jr.'s Public Sector (GB) (Kingman {GB}) visited the winner's circle for the first time since taking Belmont's GII Hill Prince Stakes in the autumn of 2021 when capturing a Woodbine contest in July (video). The 6-year-old entire is also a winner of the GII National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes and the GIII Saranac Stakes. Bred by The Kathyrn Stud, the son of Parle Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) was originally a 170,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling by for Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables by Mike Ryan in 2019. He joined his current ownership after bringing $35,000 out of the 2023 Keeneland Horses of Racing Age Sale from Meah/Lloyd Bloodstock on behalf of Iavarone when offered by ELiTE. The fourth foal for his dam, Public Sector's latest sibling is a full-brother born in 2023. A grandson of G3 Prix Chole heroine Di Moi Oui (GB) (Warning {GB}), he is also related to stakes winners King Vega (GB) and Lady Boba (GB), who are both by Lope De Vega (Ire). Juddmonte's Kingman has 42 winners from 69 runners (61%) in America. A total of eight of those are stakes winners (11%), with three-time Grade I winner Domestic Spending (GB) his flagbearer. Muhaarar Gelding A Winner At Del Mar Hronis Racing's Bran (Fr) (Muhaarar {GB}) emerged a winner at Del Mar for John Sadler after nine months on the bench (video). The Lordship Stud-bred had won the GII Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs in September of 2023, then resurfaced to race just twice last year, with a second in the GII Eddie D Stakes his best effort. The son of Best Intent (GB) (King's Best), also a winner of the GIII Daytona Stakes, was a €36,000 Arqana October yearling turned €80,000 Arqana Horses-of-Racing Age Sale graduate when purchased by MAB Agency from the later sale. A half-brother to the multiple stakes-placed filly Atakama (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Bran is also a half to that filly's full-brother, the 3-year-old gelding Orfeo (Fr). Kin to Mr. Prospector Group 1 winners Coup De Genie and Machiavellian, Bran's second dam is G2 Prix d'Astarte heroine Hydro Calido (Nureyev). Haras du Petit Tellier's Muhaarar has seven winners from 15 runners (47%) in the U.S. One of four stakes winners for his sire in that locale (27%), Bran is joined by fellow graded winners Motorious (GB) and Evening Sun (GB). #5 BRAN ($13.20) under @umbyrispoli waited for room on the rail, got some just off of it and came thru to win the opener at Del Mar.@johnwsadler trains for @Hronis_Racing. 9. There can be few six-time Group 1 winners that have as weird a profile as Ballydoyle's enigmatic Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), but as Ascot's G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes approaches of course all eyes are on him once again. It was in this summer jewel 12 months ago that one of the best Derby winners of recent times was seen floundering even before the home turn before disappearing from view, a scene that would normally represent a fall from grace. But where we are talking about this particular colt, normal goes out of the window. That 2023 King George disaster is one of a trio of flops on the biggest stage and perhaps the most forgivable on rain-softened ground, but the latest in Meydan's Dubai Sheema Classic is less so. Balanced against his Irish Champion, Breeders' Cup Turf and Prince of Wales's Stakes triumphs, his desert no-show is not as concerning as it seemed at the time and he is now firmly in the zone ahead of his second major summer target. Aidan O'Brien spoke at the Royal meeting of Ryan Moore believing that “engaging” Auguste Rodin is essential and connections are now convinced that their dynamo is as tactics-dependant as he is ground-dependant. The dry lead-up to the race has taken care of the latter situation, while the presence of Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}) can only aid his cause. Moore has no problem with passing up the ride on the stable's genuine top-level performer Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), which is testament to the elite status that Auguste Rodin enjoys. “I am looking forward to riding him. This is a horse who has won six Group 1s already and he is simply a top-class colt who anyone would clearly love to own, train or ride,” he said. “He was back to near his brilliant best when winning the Prince of Wales's Stakes for me last time, the step back up to a mile and a half won't be an issue, and the expected quick ground is a bonus. It is a race with Group 1 depth, but my colt is the one to beat.” Rebel Without a Course… There are certain multiple Group 1 winners who fail to earn the full love and respect of their own nation's public due to their most notable exploits coming overseas and Godolphin's Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is one of them. Ironically, the usually-reliable stalwart was also ineffective in last year's Sheema Classic much as Saturday's great rival was in March, but it was the latest renewal of that contest which saw him gain redemption under new enterprising tactics. Unbeaten in the UK and three-from-three this term, he enters the fray at Ascot strangely as a relative unknown to some who will visit the track for the showcase event despite being a hardened 6-year-old. “He's an international superstar, but he just hasn't had the opportunity he deserves until now to run in a Group 1 over here,” jockey William Buick said. “Bar the Derby, the King George is our biggest middle-distance race. He's a huge imposing horse who you can't help but spot and he's very uncomplicated, very genuine and obviously very good. He's high-class and it's lovely that he's now getting a proper shot at a top-level win at home.” Juddmonte's Influence Continues… Juddmonte's ability to consistently unearth top-level performers is remarkable and the rise of the operation's contender Bluestocking (GB) (Camelot {GB}) from fledgling Group 1 performer to genuine King George contender in the space of 12 months only serves to underline the ongoing potency of the operation's bloodstock. Few would have predicted that the filly that was caught close home in the G1 Irish Oaks would a year on be entering this race a leading candidate, but here she is and she is deserving of full respect given the nature of her G2 Middleton Stakes and G1 Pretty Polly Stakes wins. “It's the King George and they are the best of the best,” European racing manager Barry Mahon said. “Auguste Rodin and Rebel's Romance are both top class and Luxemburg is a Group 1 winner on his last start, there is no shortage in quality from top to bottom. It's going to be a top renewal and it's nice to have a filly good enough to partake in it.” “She's definitely matured a lot and last year, in fairness, she was probably a little weak. She was gallant in her efforts, but probably just had a bit of weakness, which wasn't able to carry her through the line. This year, she has strengthened and Ralph [Beckett] has been very happy with her, she worked very well last Saturday and I think we're in a good place, so hopefully we see that on Saturday.” Lone 3-Year-old Leads the Way… It is always disappointing when the King George fails to attract the premier members of the Classic generation, but at least this renewal has representation unlike some in recent times. On the face of it, Guy Pariente Holding and Qatar Racing's Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) has uninspiring form figures taking on his elders, but the G1 Irish Derby runner-up has weight-for-age in his favour and trainer David Menuisier is keen to have a tilt at the stars with a colt he has always rated highly. “It seems to be the trend these days that less and less 3-year-olds run in the race, but you have to try them against older horses some time and they get an 11-pound allowance,” he said. “Sunway was possibly caught in traffic a bit at a crucial stage in Ireland, but we came back from there really chuffed because he'd vindicated what we thought of him, not thinking we were unlucky in the way Tamfana was in the 1,000 Guineas.” “It took him a while to come to himself this season and I'm not sure why, but the faster ground in Ireland worked in his favour, as I think he thrives on quick conditions and in fast-run races, even though he won on testing ground last year. Having taken so long to come to himself, I didn't want to stop and he came out of Ireland absolutely buzzing–kicking and bucking as if it hadn't taken too much out of him. All the lights are green.” More Than Just a Passenger… Europe's second most important race on Saturday is the G2 York Stakes, where Sir Michael Stoute's latest older-horse project Passenger (Ulysses {Ire}) re-emerges from a setback to tackle the G1 Juddmonte International course and distance. Impressive in the G2 Huxley Stakes at Chester in May, he had to sidestep the Prince of Wales's Stakes but is ready to make his presence felt once again among the best of the middle-distance runners tackling last year's winner Alflaila (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the promising 3-year-old King's Gambit (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}). “He had a cough just at the wrong moment in his preparation for Ascot–now he is back at 100%,” the Niarchos Family's racing manager Alan Cooper explained. “Michael and his team are happy with the horse. It's a first step back. He looks a typical Sir Michael older horse improver. They've had a little hold-up, but he could be very good. Hopefully, he will reward everybody's hopes for him on Saturday and then, all being well, we'll be back at York for the Juddmonte.” Alflaila's trainer Owen Burrows is aware of the challenge facing the Shadwell homebred, who is entitled to progress from his return fourth behind Auguste Rodin in the Prince of Wales's. “King's Gambit, I respect massively,” he said. “If anything, it's probably a stronger race than last year but I'd like to think we're a better horse than we were last year.” All Hail the Chancellor… As far as visual impressions go, there are few 2-year-olds who have dazzled as Cheveley Park Stud's Chancellor (GB) (Kingman {GB}) did on his debut at Doncaster and the Gosdens' TDN Rising Star bids to add substance to style in Saturday's Listed Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot. The son of the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Queen's Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}) was winning over six furlongs there, but everything about his pedigree suggests this seventh will bring out even more in him which is a scary prospect for all others. “He was pretty impressive as we saw at Doncaster and we were thrilled that he transmitted a bit of what we saw on the gallops to the racecourse,” the operation's managing director Chris Richardson said. “Everyone seems happy and this looks like a good next opportunity for him and it is exciting to have a colt with a bit of potential I think.” “It's funny, we normally have fillies, but it just so happened that last year when we took him to the sales people weren't receptive to him for various reasons,” he added. “We took a view that we would give him a chance and he's a nice individual out of a proper mare who was hugely talented, let's hope he's exciting.” Among his peers is Qatar Racing's New Century (GB) (Kameko), an important colt for the owners and for trainer Andrew Balding who combined with the sire. He had the subsequent TDN Rising Star Field Of Gold (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) back in third in his Doncaster novice last month and racing manager David Redvers rates him highly. “Andrew and Oisin [Murphy] are incredibly sweet on the horse,” he explained. “He's got a similar career mapped out to his father and we're taking a swing at the Pat Eddery because otherwise he's got five weeks until the Solario and he's bouncing out of his skin, according to Andrew. He does take on some promising looking horses–I was rather alarmed how easily Chancellor won for the Gosden team at Doncaster. But it's a Listed race for two-year-olds at this time of year and it's hard to find an easy one over seven furlongs.” Simmering Nicely… Denied late in Royal Ascot's G3 Albany Stakes, Al Shaqab Racing's acquisition Simmering (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}) is back over the course and distance to bid for compensation in Saturday's G3 Princess Margaret Stakes. Third on debut at York behind the high-class Arabie (GB) (Dandy Man {Ire}), she sets the standard and trainer Ollie Sangster is keen to get a pattern race on board while conditions favour her. “The form from Ascot has worked out well at Newmarket and the Karl Burke horse who beat her on debut is now a Group 2 winner in France,” he said. “We're very excited to have Sheikh Joaan and the Al Shaqab team in the yard and look forward to training for them.” Despite the obvious merit of the Albany form, the fact remains that over a month has passed since that contest and that can be a long time in juvenile racing. Three potential class acts to have emerged in the interim are Isa Salman Al Khalifa's Definitive (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}), The King & The Queen's Handcuffed (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum's Mandurah (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and they are all here to be tested. Definitive's trainer Clive Cox said of his contender, who showed a willing attitude at Haydock, “It's a big step and she will come forward hugely for that first run. We liked her going into that race and she did everything really nicely.” Mandurah made a significant impact on her racecourse bow at Newmarket and Ed Crisford is hopeful. “She won her maiden well at Newmarket, we've always liked the filly and at home she looks like she's improved enough to take her chance in a stakes race. It's a competitive race and there's some very good fillies in there, but if she improves, hopefully she'll be in the mix. You've got to see where you stand really.” Soul Revival? Ascot also boasts the G3 Longines Valiant Stakes, where a talented trio of 3-year-olds include George Strawbridge's Friendly Soul (GB) (Kingman {GB}) who reverts to a mile having proven such a disappointment in the G3 Musidora Stakes. Given time to get it back together since then, the homebred who was so exciting when beating Kalpana (GB) (Study Of Man {Ire}) as they drew clear in Newmarket's Listed Pretty Polly Stakes in May remains one of the more exciting members of her sex and age from this trip to a mile and a quarter. She encounters Godolphin's unbeaten Devoted Queen (GB) (Kingman {GB}), daughter of the talented Fintry (Ire) (Shamardal) who reappears for the first time since beating Friendly Soul's classy stablemate Spiritual (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in York's Listed Michael Seely Memorial Stakes in May. 10. By Adam Hamilton Daring to chase the riches in Queensland could still bring Group 1 glory for David and Stacey White, just not with the horse they expected. The Whites, the lone Kiwis flying the flag through this huge Queensland Constellations, had to scrap Group 1 plans with their top young trotter Bet N Win due to a cruelly-timed hoof abscess. Enter their new stable addition Major Hot. The fact they were spending a chunk of time in Queensland with Bet N Win, saw Major Hot transferred to them from Mark and Nathan Purdon’s stable a few weeks ago. “It’s a privilege to be given a classy horse like Major Hot for his major Albion Park targets,” Stacey White said. After an Albion Park win and second in the Redcliffe Derby for Purdon, Major Hot ran a terrific third in the South-East Derby at Albion Park at his first run for the Whites. He followed it up with a win in a slick 1min53.2sec mile rate for 2138m at Albion Park last week. The son of Art Major is a $6.50 shot in tonight’s $150,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (9.36pm). “He’s really come on since last week’s win and his work has been great,” White said. “It’s just a shame about the draw. He’s a really genuine horse, so with the right luck we’re sure he’ll run a big race.” It’s an even Derby with no standout. Emma Stewart’s Victorian pair Bay Of Biscay (gate 11, $3.30) and Kingman (seven, $3.80) head the betting, but also both have tricky barrier draws. Back to Bet N Win and White said he will be back chasing feature success at NZ Cup time. “All going well, he’ll be aimed at the Dominion and the other feature trots back home,” she said. “Hopefully we can get back over here and have a crack at some of the feature trots sometime in the future as bit of redemption.” View the full article
  11. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In her days as a Thoroughbred horse trainer, Keri Brion has been associated mainly with steeplechase runners. And she has no problem with that. The jump game has been good to her. Since opening her own stable, the former assistant to the late Hall of Famer Jonathan Sheppard has trained an Eclipse Award Steeplechase horse in The Mean Queen (Ire) (Doyen {Ire}), who won it in 2021, her first year. But there is more to her training game, and she made people take notice. On Thursday, Brion won the 10th race with Miztertonic (Mission Impazible). It was the first flat race Brion ever won at Saratoga Race Course. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Miztertonic did not lead the maiden claiming race until the final jump. He won by a nose on the inner turf and paid $17.20. “That was pretty cool,” Brion said at her barn at the Oklahoma Annex Friday morning, “especially getting it like that. I know it was just a maiden $40,000, but it doesn't matter. It's Saratoga; it so much harder to win here … just incredible how competitive it is.” While watching the race from the winner's circle, she wasn't sure if Miztertonic had won. It was that close. Once it became official, there was relief and excitement. “I have won Grade Is over the jumps here, but the amount of text messages on my phone for winning a maiden 40 … everyone watches Saratoga,” she said. “I think I had 50 messages.” Brion said she could not remember how many horses she has run over the flats at Saratoga in her career–“but it's not that many,” she said. Brion may be known more as a steeplechase trainer, but she has more flat runners than jumpers. Of the 90 horses she has in training, she said “about” 25 go over the hurdles The rest are flat racers. “I want people to see my name and not just think 'she is a jump trainer',” Brion said. “That is not a bad thing. I do well over the jumps. I have trained Grade I winners, I have an Eclipse. There is a stigma if you train jump horses, you can't train flat horses.” Keri Brion with Miztertonic | Tim Wilkin According to Equibase, Brion has started 170 horses this year and has 22 wins, 18 seconds and 33 third-place finishes. The National Steeplechase Association has her with four wins, two seconds and eight thirds in 40 starts. “In the Mid-Atlantic, I run a lot of flat horses and we have had a really good year,” she said. Brion finished third and fifth in the GI A.P. Smithwick Memorial Handicap over the Saratoga hurdles last Sunday. When he won Thursday, Miztertonic, a 5-year-old grey gelding, was making his second start off a two-year layoff. It was only his third career start, and he was going 1 1/16 miles after two races at six furlongs. “I thought he would run well,” Brion said. “I always thought he was going to be a horse that wanted to stretch out. I can't tell you I thought he was going to win. There were a lot of horses dropping down to the maiden special weight level and he needed to take a step up. I can get horses fit, but you do question yourself up here.” Ward Hoping for Rebound as Nakatomi Returns to Races in Vanderbilt If Saturday's $350,000 GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap runs to form, 5-year-old gelding Nakatomi (Firing Line) should get a favorable setup. Owned by Qatar Racing LLC and Mrs. Fitriani Hay, Nakatomi and jockey Tyler Gaffalione will see plenty of speed around them in the six-furlong race. “Everyone in there is a fast horse, which you would expect in a Grade I going three quarters,” Nakatomi trainer Wesley Ward said Friday about his five rivals. Early speed is one thing Nakatomi does not have, so the faster they go up front, the better for him. Nakatomi's 2023 allowance at the Spa | Sarah Andrew This will be the first start for Nakatomi since he finished a troubled third in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen in Dubai on Mar. 30. Ridden by Jamie Spencer that day, Nakatomi had a bad break and a wide trip. “I was not able to go myself this year, but after watching the replay and feedback from Jamie Spencer, it was just a really rough trip,” Ward said. “He had been training well for that race and it's a shame we did not have a good shot at it.” When he got Nakatomi back to Kentucky, Ward wanted to do what he always does with his horses that head overseas: give them time off. “That is what we did,” he said. “We gave him time to recover, but it didn't appear like he needed it. I gave it to him anyway.” Nakatomi, named after Nakatomi Plaza from the 1988 movie “Die Hard,” is the 5-2 second choice on the Vanderbilt morning line behind the Steve Asmussen-trained Skelly (Practical Joke), who is 6-5. Leaving from the rail should not be a problem for Nakatomi, Ward said. “If the one hole did not make a difference for any horse, it would be him,” Ward said. “Hopefully, all the others will get away cleanly so we can get a nice stalking trip and be able to ease out and away we go.” Nakatomi has five wins, two seconds and six thirds in 17 career starts. In nine tries at the Vanderbilt distance, he has one win to go along with two seconds and five thirds. In his final start last year, Nakatomi was third in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. This will be his third start at Saratoga. He won an allowance at the Spa in 2023 and was third in the 2021 GII Saratoga Special Stakes. Haskell Winner Dornoch Back at Gargan's Barn Following Four Days Off Campus After four days away, GI Haskell Stakes winner Dornoch (Good Magic) returned to trainer Danny Gargan's barn on the backstretch at Saratoga Race Course. Dornoch wins last week's Haskell | Sarah Andrew Considered by many to be the leader of the 3-year-old colt division, Dornoch had spent the majority of the week at GMP Farm in nearby Schuylerville where he had Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber therapy, a procedure that delivers increased amount of oxygen to injured tissues. Dornoch, also the GI Belmont Stakes winner, has had a skin disease, Gargan said. “He had four treatments, it was a good way to recover (from the Haskell win July 20),” Gargan said at his barn on the Saratoga backstretch Friday. “He came back Thursday, and he went to the track (Friday).” Gargan is keeping Dornoch on the same schedule he had him on in the time between the GI Kentucky Derby–where he finished 10th–and the Belmont. He said there will be two works for Dornoch before the next target, the GI Travers Stakes on Aug. 24. One will come 15-16 days from the race and the second will be seven or eight days out. “They pumped fresh oxygen into him, and he looked great out there on the track,” Gargan said. “It's a luxury to have that (GMP Farm) facility right down the road. It's gorgeous.” The post Saratoga Notebook, Presented by NYRA Bets: Brion Proves She is More Than Just a Jump Trainer appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 17. Trainer Chad Brown has long stated that a victory in the GI Travers S., not far from home in Mechanicville, would be one of the crowning moments of what will be a Hall of Fame career. 'TDN Rising Star' Sierra Leone (Gun Runner) is the barn's main hope for the centerpiece of the Saratoga meeting and he can take one giant step towards fulfilling his trainer's dream as the likely favorite in Saturday's GII Jim Dandy Stakes. The colt, who topped the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale not far from the main entrance to the track, has done little wrong in his career, yet is still very much a work in progress. So impressive in winning the GII Risen Star Stakes and GI Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, wayward stretch antics arguably cost him the victory in the GI Kentucky Derby two starts back. The GI Belmont Stakes was there for the taking as well, but even with Flavien Prat replacing Tyler Gaffalione, he was up to his old tricks–to be fair, a sluggish start didn't aid his cause either–and could do no better than third in the final leg of the Triple Crown held locally June 8. After breezing in company up to the Belmont, Sierra Leone has been going on his own of late, and Brown is bullish on what he's seen. “For right now, at this point of his campaign, it's working for him taking him out of company for a little bit,” said the trainer, who has also never won the Jim Dandy. “He's very fit and I'm just looking to bring him to the race healthy and focused.” The enigmatic Eclipse Award-winning 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light) looks to give Repole Stable and Todd Pletcher back-to-back scores in the race, after champion Forte (Violence) saluted 12 months ago. And connections will be hoping that his in-and-out pattern means an 'A' effort is in the offing after Fierceness weakened to 15th in the Derby. An effort approximating that which he turned in to take the GI Curlin Florida Derby will likely see him get his picture taken, but with Fierceness, there really are no guarantees. “We are happy with him,” Pletcher said. “We gave him plenty of time after the Kentucky Derby, and I think it has done him well. He has put on some weight and has trained really well.” Seize the Grey (Arrogate) looks to become the first winner of the GI Preakness Stakes to double up in the Jim Dandy since Bernardini (A.P. Indy) in 2006. The only other member of the field to have earned a triple-digit Beyer, the grey colt was one of the first beaten in the Belmont, tiring to finish a distant seventh. Trainer Wayne Lukas last won the Jim Dandy in 2001 with Scorpion (Seattle Slew). Juddmonte's Batten Down (Tapit), whose full-brother Tacitus nearly won the 2019 Jim Dandy, was under consideration for the Belmont, but shipped to Thistledown instead and proved an easy, all-the-way winner of the GIII Ohio Derby, besting Gould's Gold (Goldencents) by a length and three-quarters. Pony Express (Gun Runner), a nine-length maiden winner at Santa Anita June 15, completes the field. Grade I Sprints On Either Coast The nominal feature on Saturday's program at the Spa is the GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap, which has drawn a field of six. Skelly (Practical Joke) is the 6-5 favorite on the morning line and has not missed a beat this season after tasting defeat just once in seven outings last term. Winner of the King Cotton Stakes at Oaklawn Feb. 3, he ran with credit to be runner-up in the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint in Saudi Arabia just three weeks later. Just short of eight weeks hence, the dark bay defended his title in the GIII Count Fleet Sprint Handicap and added a repeat success in the May 4 Lake Hamilton Stakes in Hot Springs, but he could not overcome a slow start when second in the Aristides Stakes at Churchill June 1. Nakatomi (Firing Line) was an allowance winner at this meeting last summer and also traveled to the desert earlier this year, finishing a meritorious third with some trouble in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan Mar. 30. Baby Yoda (Prospective) earned a career-best 114 Beyer in a first-level allowance at this venue back in 2021 and broke through with a six-length romp in the GII True North Stakes on the Belmont undercard June 8. Subrogate (Arrogate) was an allowance winner on that same program and popped a 106 Beyer for a June 29 allowance tally at Aqueduct. Saturday's GI Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar offers the winner a fees-paid berth into the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint over the same course and distance come November. Cal-bred sensation The Chosen Vron (Vronsky) had an eight-race winning streak snapped when fifth in last year's Sprint, but he has since won five on the trot, each at long odds-on, including the May 25 Thors Echo Stakes at Santa Anita. He's strictly the one they'll have to beat on Saturday, but it hardly looks a walkover on paper, as the opposition includes Happy Jack (Oxbow), a 4 1/2-length romper in the GII Triple Bend Stakes June 1, and Kentucky raider Closethegame Sugar (Girvin), who defeated the aforementioned Skelly in the Aristides and proved it was no fluke with a success in the June 29 Kellys Landing Stakes in Louisville. Jackstown (Speightstown) returned from a 22-month absence to thrash Santa Anita allowance rivals by 3 1/2 lengths June 14, and that Bob Baffert is letting him take his chance in Grade I company at career start number three is an endorsement of his talent. Arabian Knight Back In Action In San Diego 'TDN Rising Star' Arabian Knight (Uncle Mo), last seen finishing a very good fourth behind White Abarrio (Race Day) in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 4, makes a much-anticipated return to action as the 124-pound topweight in Saturday's GII San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. The 8 1/2-furlong contest serves as a prep for the GI Pacific Classic, won in front-running fashion last year by Arabian Knight. Express Train (Union Rags), who won this race as a 4-year-old in 2021, makes his second start off a lengthy absence and should strip fitter for a third to The Chosen Vron in the Apr. 27 Kona Gold Stakes in Arcadia. Four-time graded winner Newgrange (Violence) leaves from the widest gate in the field of five, while Dr. Venkman (Ghostzapper) tries a route of ground for the first time, having finished second to Happy Jack last time in the Triple Bend. Arabian Knight winning the Pacific Classic | Horsephotos Gun Song Drops In Class For Monmouth Oaks Lee Lewis's Gun Song (Gun Runner) has faced the best competition among the eight horses signed on for Saturday's GIII Monmouth Oaks and should find smoother sailing here as a short-priced favorite. Fractionally disappointing when only fourth in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks Mar. 30, the chestnut proved a convincing winner of the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. at Pimlico May 17. Connections elected to swing for the fences in the GI Acorn Stakes at Saratoga June 7, and Gun Song was a forward factor for about six furlongs before retreating to eighth behind divisional leader Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna). Little Jamie (Collected) was chinned on the line to just miss in the GIII Indiana Oaks July 6 and is a candidate to pick up some more graded black-type here, while Chilled (Frosted) can also get a slice if running back to her eight-length graduation at Churchill June 22. 19. Eight individual owners, trainers and other Thoroughbred industry licensees in Oklahoma on July 24 filed what is now the sixth federal lawsuit in three years to try and get the Horseracing and Safety Integrity Act (HISA) declared unconstitutional. As in previous lawsuits that have similarly targeted the HISA Authority and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as defendants, the Oklahoma horsemen want declaratory judgments, injunctions, and restraining orders imposed that would invalidate HISA rules and prohibit the HISA Authority, the FTC, and the Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU) from enforcing the regulations that govern the sport. “As with other litigation making similar claims, we will vigorously defend our ability to implement HISA's safety and integrity rules,” a spokesperson for the Authority stated Friday in an emailed response to TDN's request for comment on the new lawsuit. Even though the two counts in the Oklahoma horsemen's civil complaint-alleged violations of the Constitutional non-delegation doctrine and the Administrative Procedure Act (APA)-are familiar planks whose angles have been argued in some of the other lawsuits, this new one filed Wednesday in United States District Court of Oklahoma (Western District) hits on the fact that there are now two conflicting opinions in federal appeals courts about whether or not HISA is constitutional. Although the lawsuit does not specifically mention that the question over HISA's constitutionality could be headed for the U.S. Supreme Court to resolve the conflicting appeals courts' opinions, the plaintiffs did make sure to underscore that the Fifth Circuit, on July 5, 2024, issued a ruling stating that HISA's enforcement provisions are facially unconstitutional. That opinion was a departure from the Sixth Circuit's ruling from Mar. 3, 2023, which stated that a change of language in the HISA law at the end of 2022 was sufficient to alleviate any concerns over the act's constitutionality. The plaintiffs in this new case are Joe Offolter, Danny Caldwell, Elizabeth Butler, Randy Blair, Bryan Hawk, Scott Young, Boyd Caster and Michael Major. The complaint describes most of them as licensed participants for the upcoming Thoroughbred meet at Remington Park in Oklahoma City that starts Aug. 16. Their lawsuit stated the following: “The Act gives the Authority investigatory powers and the right to enforce alleged rule violations with fines, suspensions, and civil enforcement actions, asserting the power of the federal government… “After an APA challenge, a federal district court in Louisiana held that the FTC's implementation of the rules violated the APA and enjoined their enforcement (in certain states, and for certain parties)… “In a challenge involving Oklahoma, the Sixth Circuit found that Congress's amendment cured the facial constitutional defect by placing the Authority subordinate to the FTC. Pertinent here, the Sixth Circuit evaluated the challenge to the Act's enforcement provisions as a facial challenge, not an as-applied challenge to an individual enforcement action… “A few weeks ago, the Fifth Circuit, on another look at HISA, disagreed with the Sixth Circuit, holding that HISA's enforcement provisions, on its face, unconstitutionally delegates federal executive power to a private entity… “The Court should declare certain HISA provisions and concomitant regulations unconstitutional and preliminarily and permanently enjoin Defendants (or any of its associates or agents) from implementing and enforcing the same in Oklahoma and/or grant Plaintiffs alternative relief under the APA or other federal law.” Beyond the Fifth Circuit case, whose lead plaintiff is the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA), and the Sixth Circuit case, led by the states of Oklahoma, West Virginia and Louisiana, another case at the federal appeals court level is awaiting judgment in the Eighth Circuit. That case involves leaders of the HBPA affiliates in Arkansas and Iowa seeking to reverse a lower court's denial of a preliminary injunction that sought to halt HISA and its Anti-Doping and Medication Control program. Yet another federal lawsuit, in which both HISA and the FTC are defendants in a 2022 complaint initiated by the states of Louisiana and West Virginia, is listed on the docket as being “administratively stayed” pending the ruling by the Fifth Circuit that came out three weeks ago. That's the lawsuit that, exactly two years ago, on July 26, 2022, put in place a preliminary injunction that is currently prohibiting HISA rules from being implemented in the states of Louisiana and West Virginia. A sixth anti-HISA federal lawsuit filed in Texas in 2022 by a consortium of present, past, and aspirational pari-mutuel track operators in that state was ordered in 2023 to be condensed into the HBPA's lawsuit that also originated in Texas, which is the one that ended up going to the Fifth Circuit appeals court. 20. In a deal brokered by Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock and J.P. Sullivan of Sullivan Bloodstock, GI Preakness winner Rombauer (by Twirling Candy), who stood his first season this year at War Horse Place in Lexington, Kentucky, will be shuttling to Chile, according to a press release from Bowling Bloodstock on Friday. The John Fradkin homebred broke his maiden at first asking at Del Mar during the summer of 2020 and was the runner-up in the GI American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita in late September. As a 3-year-old, Rombauer was third in GII Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland before conquering the second leg of the Triple Crown at double-digit odds. Now a six-year-old, the son of Twirling Candy–who stood his first season in 2024 for an advertised fee of $6,000 LFSN–will take up residence at Haras Porta Pia in Chile. 24. It has been the season of all seasons for the ever-young Dark Angel (Ire). So much so that Gay O'Callaghan has agreed to go in front of the camera to talk about the horse he describes as “part of the family”. The master of Yeomanstown Stud speaks about Dark Angel like a father of his favourite son. But when the 19-year-old stallion comes up trumps year after year with genuine top-notchers like Baattash (Ire), Harry Angel (Ire) and now Charyn (Ire), it's hard not to dote over the loveable grey. Speaking from his sitting room underneath a Peter Curling-commissioned painting of Dark Angel, who leads the likes of Dubawi (Ire), Kingman (GB), Galileo (Ire) and Sea The Stars (Ire) in the British and Irish Sires' Championship, O'Callaghan says, “To get a horse like Dark Angel-it's a miracle. You don't buy them, you don't find them, they just happen to you.” This year's Royal Ascot meeting propelled Dark Angel into another stratosphere. Charyn lit the touch paper for what would turn out to be a memorable week for the stallion when winning the G1 Queen Anne Stakes over a mile before Khaadem (Ire) laned back-to-back runnings of the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes over 6f. Those big-race victories contributed to Dark Angel being over €560,000 clear of Dubawi in terms of prize-money earned for his offspring this season. But there is much more than just two horses doing the business on the big stage for him. The Owen Burrows-trained Alflaila (GB) ran a perfectly respectable comeback race when fourth behind Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes at the royal meeting and is a leading fancy in Saturday's G2 Sky Bet York Stakes. All told, Dark Angel has had 64 winners to runners in Britain and Ireland this season, a success rate that has only been bettered by Kingman. He is also operating at a 30% strike-rate and has five winners at stakes level. Reflecting on that momentous week at Royal Ascot, O'Callaghan said, “It was wonderful. Guy and David [sons] bred Charyn and he's a wonderful horse-a very successful horse. He goes to France for the Jacques le Marois and hopefully he can strike in another Group 1. His owner's [Nurlan Bizakov] farm is in France and he is going to stand there [at Sumbe]. And obviously Khaadem showed what a high-class sprinter he is for the second year running in the Queen Elizabeth.” He continued, “But really, the man who really loved Dark Angel was Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum. He really had wonderful success with him. From Battaash on, Sheikh Hamdan had a lot of good horses through his hands by Dark Angel. Sheikh Hamdan's support was immeasurable for that horse and hopefully Shadwell will have another big-race winner at York on Saturday with Alflaila.” Dark Angel speaks to the fabric of Yeomanstown Stud. Having been bred by the O'Callaghan family, he was offered as a yearling by the outfit at the Doncaster St Leger Sale in 2006, where he was knocked down to BBA Ireland for 61,000gns. A spellbinding juvenile campaign for Barry Hills, that featured Group 1 success in the Middle Park Stakes, sealed his place at stud where he has been something of an instant hit. Gay explained, “He was a very nice yearling and from the first crop of Acclamation (GB), who we tried to buy. We sent Acclamation three mares and this fella was one of the foals born. From the day he was born, he was a really good foal-strong, solid, well-made and good action. We took him to Doncaster and Barry Hills bought him for 61,000gns, which wasn't a bad price at the time. I suppose the rest is history.” Asked at what point was it where O'Callaghan realised he had unearthed something special, he replied, “Well you never can know that. Once his runners started to come out, they were winning from the word go. I think he had 33 winners in his first year, which is a really good number. From May onwards, everything that was running was winning. It just became very exciting from there.” That excitement burns bright to this day with Dark Angel, who became a Classic-producing stallion in 2022 when Mangoustine (Fr) landed the French 1,000 Guineas, and can end the year as the Champion Sire in Britain and Ireland. “Well, he had a very good Ascot and is leading it at the moment but every week that goes by, he needs to keep topping it up or else he won't stay there,” O'Callaghan commented on the sire of 15 individual Group/Grade I winners to date, “It's as simple as that. By the end of the year, it could change again but we'd think it would continue for most of the year anyway. It's great to have him up there at any stage. I'm not going to say that we will be there [on top] at the end of the year but we'd love to be there at the end of the year.” He added, “This horse is like family. He means everything to us and is just a special horse to have around the place. As an individual, he's such a kind horse. He's half human-just a very kind horse and it's very easy to do anything with him. He's been a horse of a lifetime but hopefully we might have time to get one more in!” The post Gay O’Callaghan: ‘Dark Angel Is Like Family – He Means Everything To Us’ appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 25. World Record (c, 3, Gun Runner–Marwa {GB}, by Exceed And Excel {Aus}) added blinkers and never gave the field a chance in the GII Amsterdam Stakes. A frontrunning winner at second asking May 27, and third last out June 30 in the Maxfield Stakes, both at Churchill Downs, the bay sped through a first quarter in :21.56 and a half in :44.64 as 4-5 favorite Jefferson Street (Street Sense) gave pursuit. Turning for home, it looked like the latter would briefly mount a rally but ultimately the winner proved too much for his rivals, winning with air to spare. Valentine Candy (Justify) ran third. World Record (6-1) doesn't set one in GII Amsterdam but the 3-year-old runs pretty darned good, winning by 6 3/4 lengths for Flavien Prat and @BrissetRodolphe.
