  2. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.–During his Hall of Fame career, trainer Todd Pletcher has won the GIII Sanford at Saratoga a record eight times. He'll look to pad that stat on Saturday when he saddles Mentee (City of Light) in the six-furlong race, which will be run for the 108th time. “For me, it's always about the 2-year-olds,” Pletcher said outside his barn at the Oklahoma Training Track when asked what the most exciting part of training is for him. “The 2-year-old program is fantastic here; the state program is great. We have been fortunate over the years to have some that are ready for the Schuylerville and the Sanford. Hopefully, we can keep moving forward.” Mentee is a full brother to Fierceness (City of Light), a current Pletcher stable star. Mentee and Fierceness are ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez and both are owned by Mike Repole. The similarities end there. “You would not look at (Mentee) and say, 'oh, that is Fierceness' little brother,” Pletcher said. “He is not quite as tall and is a little broader.” Mentee began his career with a narrow win over the George Weaver-trained Colloquial (Vekoma). He won by a nose in the five-furlong race, which was completed in a track record time of 56.97 seconds at Aqueduct on June 15. In the stretch, Mentee opened up by five lengths before Colloquial made it close. “He was traveling pretty easily and then he got a little complacent on the lead,” Pletcher said. “Johnny looked back and didn't see anyone and he looked back again and didn't see anyone. He thought he had put him away. Credit to George's horse; he ran a good race.” Pletcher said that Mentee showed tactical speed as soon as he came into the barn. When the colt showed his speed in the debut, it came as no surprise. Now, the hope is he continues to move forward. “I wish we had not drawn the rail (in the Sanford), but I have been happy with everything he has done,” Pletcher said. “He has been a pleasure to train so far.” Motion Is Way Overdue For Better Luck In Diana When it comes to the GI Diana Stakes at Saratoga, trainer Graham Motion has had plenty of luck. All of it bad. In the 13 editions of the Diana he has had horses in, Motion has finished second six times. Five of them have been by the slimmest of margins; three by a head and one each by a nose and a neck. Talk about excruciating. “Thanks for reminding me,” Motion said by phone from his training base at Fair Hill in Maryland. “But it will not put me off from trying.” Motion will have a horse in Saturday's $500,000 Diana, which will be run on the inner turf course at 1 1/8 miles. Mission of Joy (Kitten's Joy) is one of the 11 filles and mares entered. The 4-year-old filly has won four of 12 career starts and was last seen finishing third, beaten a half length, in the one-mile GI Just A Game at Saratoga last month. “I think the 1 1/8 miles will suit her a little better,” Motion said. “We thought of her as a miler but I'm not sure the mile and an eighth is not better for her. She has shown she belongs in these races.” In the Just A Game, Mission of Joy was defeated by Chili Flag (Fr) (Cityscape {GB}) and Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio). Those two are also back in the Diana, part of the five-horse patrol coming from the barn of Chad Brown. Whitebeam is the defending Diana champion. Although Motion has had plenty of frustration in the Diana, he has had a plethora of success lately. In his last 80 starts, he has 25 wins. “Sometimes, things just click, and it has for us in the last 30, 60 days,” Motion said. “You worry when you are not doing well, and you worry when you are doing well because you want to keep it going. At the end of the day, it's all about having better horses.” Fernando Abreu and Javier Castellano | Sarah Andrew Another Abreu Finds Winner's Circle At Saratoga At the end of Friday's first race at Saratoga, when 3-year-old filly Reliable Lady (Take Charge Indy) was bounding home to win by 21/2 lengths, Fernando Abreu got emotional. “When I saw she was going to win, I had tears coming out of my eyes,” Abreu said in the winner's circle. That's because this was the first time the 44-year-old Abreu had ever won a race at the Spa. Abreu spend most of his time training in Florida but is spending the summer at Saratoga, a place he has always been familiar with. He worked as an assistant for the late Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens for 19 years. For the last nine years, he has been on his own. He said has started between 20 and 25 horses at Saratoga during his career. Reliable Lady, owned and bred by Irving Cowan, came into Abreu's barn when trainer Ralph Nicks retired in April. She broke her maiden in the seven-furlong, $100,000 race, her fourth start. Abreu is the brother of Jorge Abreu, a trainer on the New York circuit. “This is a very special feeling,” Fernando Abreu said. “All the things you go through in the morning and then seen them show up in the afternoon. I thought if she showed up, she was going to be good.” Stewart Is Going To Be Busy On Saturday Trainer Dallas Stewart, absent from Saratoga last summer, save for a couple of days, is back in town and he'll be here for the duration of the meet. “Didn't have the stock,” Stewart said Friday morning, explaining why he wasn't here a year ago. He has 10 horses stabled at his barn on the Oklahoma Training Track and five of them will be running on Saturday. “Half the barn is going,” he said with a laugh. “I am going to bring another five up (from Kentucky) in a week.” He plans on running a couple juveniles in stakes races next month. Anakarina (Vekoma), who broke her maiden in her second start, is being pointed to the GIII Adirondack Stakes for 2-year-old fillies on Aug. 4 and Louisiana-bred Smoken Wicked (Bobby's Wicked One) is on target for the GII Saratoga Special for 2-year-old colts on Aug. 10. Smoken Wicked finished second in the Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs at 32-1 in his first start versus winners on June 30. Stewart said that 5-year-old Hoist the Gold (Mineshaft), winner of the GII Cigar Mile Handicap last year and third in the GI Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga last month, could run in the GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt on July 27 or he might wait for the GI Forego on Aug. 24, Travers Day. “If you have the right stock, this is the place to be,” he said. 3. Twirling Queen (Twirling Candy) made it four wins from as many starts as a 3-year-old and remained perfect in two appearances on the grass, posting a comfortable victory in Friday's Coronation Cup Stakes at Saratoga. With 9-5 morning-line favorite Star of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) scratching in favor of Sunday's GIII Quick Call Stakes, the Coronation Cup shaped a more open affair, and Twirling Queen put herself right into the mix early just off the pace disputed by Ever So Sweet (Ire) (Calyx {GB}), the 9-4 choice, and Toupie (Uncle Mo) through an opening quarter in :21.65. In range three deep on the turn, Twirling Queen was popped the question in upper stretch by Luis Saez, dueled into the final furlong with Toupie down to her inside and was home first as Kaiyru (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}) gained inches late. Cloudwalker (More Than Ready) was up for third. “She broke from there pretty fast,” Saez said. “I feel like she wanted to take the lead, but I knew the speed was outside. Everything came like the plan–we sat behind and let the speed go. When we came to the top of the stretch, she was pretty loaded.” A debut maiden winner in four juvenile appearances for Norm Casse, Twirling Queen made a favorable impression in her first start for this barn, lighting up the tote at 31-1 in a synthetic optional claimer at Gulfstream Feb. 8. She repeated the dose– this time at 13-1–in the rained-off Melody of Colors Stakes in Hallandale Mar. 24 and returned better than 10-1 when accounting for Toupie and Cloudwalker in her turf debut in the May 11 Mamzelle Stakes at Churchill Downs. A two-time stakes winner at two, Adventurous Lady was purchased by Pursuit of Success for $100,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton HORA Sale. A half-sister to 'TDN Rising Star' Ari's Magic (Good Magic), Adventurous Lady is also responsible for the 2-year-old filly Lady Crush (Liam's Map), a yearling filly by Dialed In and a filly foal by Upstart. 6. Miss Justify (Justify) rallied smartly along the fence in the stretch to capture Friday's $135,000 Wilton Stakes at Saratoga. Third in the Smart Halo Stakes while making her final start for trainer Susan Cooney at Laurel last November, the bay made two previous attempts for Todd Pletcher, including a front-running, last-out win going a one-turn mile in an optional claimer at Churchill Downs June 1. Backed at odds of 5-2 here, the rail-drawn Miss Justify chased from fourth through an opening quarter in :23.71. She crept up closer rounding the far turn, shot through an opening along the rail in the stretch and kicked home nicely to deliver a one-length victory over Striker Has Dial (Dialed In). “It worked out and we were able to save ground and get in a good spot,” Pletcher said. “It's nice to see that she can come from off the pace. She was able to win wire-to-wire last time, so it's good to see.” On a potential stretch-out to 10 furlongs in the GI Alabama Stakes Aug. 17, Pletcher added, “I think she'll definitely stretch out. I don't know if we'll be quite that ambitious just yet, but we'll keep all our options open.” Miss Justify becomes the 32nd stakes winner worldwide for her leading young sire. The winner's dam Swiss Alps had a filly by Liam's Map in 2023 and a colt by Epicenter in 2024. Swiss Alps is a half-sister to the SW & GISP Holiday Soiree (Harlan's Holiday), who has gone on to produce leading female sprinter Vahva (Gun Runner). Swiss Alps brought $105,000 from Sugarloaf in foal to Epicenter at the 2023 KEENOV sale. 8. The racing and breeze-up communities in Ireland have been rocked by the news that prominent rider Valdi de Souza has died at the age of 49 following “a freak accident” at work. The Brazilian native's finest hour in the saddle came when he partnered Rock Of Rochelle to win a Listed race at the Curragh for trainer Andrew Kinsella back in 2007. He had been part of the fabric of Brendan Holland's Grove Stud for the past 11 years and the leading breeze-up handler paid an emotional tribute to de Souza on Friday evening. “I've been in this game for over 30 years now and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Valdi was the most professional person that anyone could wish to work with,” Holland said. “Working with Valdi was a pleasure and a privilege. He was just an absolute gentleman–the kindest, nicest and gentlest person you would ever wish to meet. He absolutely adored horses and, when he was on a horse's back, that was his home. He thought of nothing else but horses. “I have been very lucky to have had lots of brilliant staff who have helped me make Grove Stud a success but there's no doubt that Valdi was a massive part of our story. My whole family, Vanessa and the kids, and employees past and present, are absolutely devastated.” Brendan Holland: paid a heartfelt tribute to de Souza | Tattersalls De Souza rode over a couple of hundred winners as a professional jockey in his native Brazil and also enjoyed stints on the Saudi Arabian circuit. As well as Kinsella, for whom he enjoyed a fruitful relationship with, he also won a Listed contest aboard Majestic Times for Luke McAteer. De Sousa also spent time working with trainers Ken Condon and Willie McCreery before honing his craft as one of the best riders on the breeze-up circuit. “Valdi didn't have a bad word to say about anyone and always spoke very kindly of his time with Willie, Ken, Liam and all the other trainers he struck up a good relationship with. He was a very understated man. Everybody in the breeze-up community knew Valdi and he definitely didn't realise the standing he was held in. “He has six family members working in racing here in Ireland–Fagner, Jair, Fernando, Adriano, Ramone and Ray–so they are a great family of horse people and horse lovers. I just hope that his family knows how special he was to us all and how much we're all going to miss him. Everybody who knew Valdi was the better for knowing him.” Holland added, “He had some great friends in the business and was a very proud farmer back home in Brazil. He grew up with Silvestre de Souza and I will never forget him comparing his cattle with Silvestre's. I think he was very disappointed with Silvestre's stock compared to his own and would be advising him as to where he was going wrong! “But in all seriousness, the professionalism of the man is one of the things that marked him out as being such a great person to work with. He used to go home every year for a bit of a break but last year, let's just say he wintered a bit better than most. “I can remember him coming back from his holidays last autumn and I just took one look at him and I shook my head because he was carrying more than a few pounds overweight. He turned to me and said, 'to be honest boss, I am more disappointed in myself!' We got a great laugh out of it–that's the type of fella he was. I am going to miss him so much.” De Souza is understood to have died following “a freak accident” at Holland's base in County Cork. He has been on life support until Friday evening. Funeral details have yet to be arranged. 10. Chad Brown has won the GI Diana Stakes seven times in its last eight runnings and, well, the odds say that right about 5:45 p.m. Saturday, that will be eight out of the last nine. That's because the Mechanicville native will send out half of the 10 runners for the first elite-level contest of the Saratoga meeting. Strength, indeed, in numbers, but a quintet also not short on quality. Chili Flag (Fr) (Cityscape {GB}) is perhaps the antithetical European import for the barn in the sense that she required three starts to get her first win stateside and a 'whopping' half-dozen before earning her first black-type success in a race named in honor of two-time Diana winner Forever Together last November at Aqueduct. That start, coincidentally, was her first in this country without Lasix, and she seems to thrive without the medication, having won three of four since, including a late-running tally in the GI Just A Game Stakes going a mile on the Belmont Stakes undercard June 7. Whitebeam (GB) (Caravaggio) looks to join a list of dual Diana winners that includes the likes of Tempted and Shuvee and more recently the Brown-conditioned Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). She is, however, winless in four starts since upsetting this test at nearly 8-1 last summer and has completed the exacta in each of her two starts this term, including the Just A Game where she was outfinished by her stablemate. Didia (Arg) (Orpen) enters the Diana in sharp form, arguably the best of her career, after returning an overlaid $20 and some change to her backers in the GI New York Stakes over a mile and three-sixteenths June 7, where she had Neecie Marie (Cross Traffic) 1 1/2 lengths behind in second. There is some chance Saturday's nine-furlong trip is on the short side, but she did take out the GII Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf over a mile and a sixteenth on seasonal debut Jan. 27. Moira (Ghostzapper), who thrashed the boys in the 2022 Queen's Plate, returns to the races for the first time since running home to be third behind the world-class Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and Warm Heart (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita. “I think this is a bigger, stronger version of her right now,” said trainer Kevin Attard. “Physically, this is the best she's looked. She's matured from four to five and she's worked very well heading into this race.” Mentee Figures Plenty Tough In Sanford Repole Stables' Mentee (City of Light), a full-brother to champion 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness, has drawn the rail in a field of eight for Saturday's co-featured GIII Sanford Stakes. The bay colt was part of an entry favored at 55 cents on the dollar on Aqueduct debut June 15, and he broke running and set a fast pace beneath John Velazquez. He looked to have the race all parceled up when five in front a furlong from home, but the well-meant Colloquial (Vekoma) took ground off him with every stride and only the wire saved Mentee. So what was up with that, trainer Todd Pletcher? “I think he got a little bit idle on his own but was able to get the job done in a very fast time,” the conditioner said. “I think the horse that was second is a high-quality horse as well, so I was pleased with his debut and very happy with the way he's trained since then.” Studlydoright (Nyquist) is the lone Sanford entrant with two wins to his credit, having won his maiden nicely at first asking in the Laurel slop May 5 before upsetting the June 6 Tremont Stakes by the better part of two lengths at odds of 13-1. “He's doing very well and I'm looking forward to running him again,” said trainer John Robb. “He's just a nice horse. I was tickled to death with the way he ran and the way he finished. I'm looking forward to going a little bit farther with him. I think the more distance, the better.” Three Echoes (Echo Town) was highly impressive in graduating at first asking at Churchill May 24, taking a tight gap at the fence before going on with it. The chestnut, campaigned by the connections of the first-crop sire (by Speightstown), attended the Tremont pace before settling for a clear third. The first of the afternoon's graded races is the GIII Kelso Stakes, in which 'TDN Rising Star' Carl Spackler (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) will look to bounce back from a subpar fifth in the GIII Poker Stakes June 8. Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was second and Talk of the Nation (Quality Road) third in the same heat behind all-the-way winner Ice Chocolat (Brz) (Goldikovic {Ire}). Jockey Melissa Iorio will undergo precautionary X-rays at the Monmouth Medical Center after being involved in a spill on Friday's opening race at Monmouth Park, the track announced via presser Friday. Iorio was pitched forward and onto the track in Friday's opener when Summer Flower (Summer Front) stumbled at the start, and the jockey fell into the path of Me So Lucky (Madefromlucky) on the rail. Dr. Angelo Chinnici, Monmouth Park's medical director, reports that Iorio suffered “lacerations to the chin but there was no loss of consciousness”. Her mount, Summer Flower, did not appear to suffer any injuries, according to trainer Mike Dini. 23. After Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's Inisherin (GB) (Shamardal) had crossed the line in Royal Ascot's G1 Commonwealth Cup, all logic pointed to Newmarket and Saturday's G1 My Pension Expert July Cup. Imperious there, as he had been in Haydock's G2 Sandy Lane Stakes the previous month, Kevin Ryan's latest sprinting luminary is unbeaten over this six-furlong trip and open to abundant improvement from a family which breeds class acts at a ridiculous rate. Whatever his obvious merits, the fact is that with the ground drying out by the hour Inisherin will have never been as fast in his life as he will be over the first four furlongs of this contest. Not bred to be a pure sprinter, he has been over this trip only twice in his career with the conditions that met him on both occasions very much playing to his strengths. At a rain-softened Haydock in May, he was allowed to saunter through the Sandy Lane without breaking 11 seconds per furlong and on Ascot's climbing straight course was able to repeat that trick. The Sandy Lane was won in 1:12.77 and the Commonwealth Cup in 1:12.51, but the July Cup is a considerably faster examination with the race generally completed two seconds quicker by the winner. His chief rival Vandeek has already covered the six furlongs of the G1 Middle Park Stakes on the Rowley Mile track here in 1:10.76 in September, while Jasour took only 1:11.11 to win the G2 July Stakes at this meeting 12 months ago. Of the Commonwealth Cup winners to try and double up here since its inception in 2015, only Muhaarar (GB) and Shaquille (GB) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) have managed the feat with Quiet Reflection (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), Caravaggio, Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Advertise (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) and Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) all failing. That is not to say that Inisherin cannot up his sprinting a notch, with his brilliant closing sectionals on Newcastle's stiff finish in March offering an insight into his raw power, and this steep uphill climb to the line will also be in his favour. Ryan stated after the Commonwealth that he believes the homebred will ger faster as the season wears on, so this promises to be a fascinating study of his adaptability. Jockey Tom Eaves has full faith in his mount. “Inisherin is a very good horse. He's the best I've sat on, so I'm looking forward to Saturday,” he said. “He's got a very good mind and a lot of pure ability. I was placed twice in the July Cup on Brando at biggish prices, so you'd hope that Inisherin would have an even better chance as favourite, but it's a very strong Group 1.” 'We Couldn't Be Happier with Him': Vandeek Team Ready for Rematch… One of the key members of that “very strong” cast is the aforementioned Vandeek, who was meeting with defeat for the first time on his seasonal bow in the Sandy Lane and who was forced to miss Royal Ascot. Juveniles who pull off the G1 Prix Morny-Middle Park double are rare commodities and Ed Crisford is keen to see what he can produce in 2024. “It was unfortunate we couldn't run at Ascot because of the abnormal bloods, but he's been in great form since and has bounced back to health. It's been a testing first half of the year, but he's just got to get racing now. He's had that run at Haydock on that bad ground, this is his second run and we couldn't be happier with him going into Saturday.” The Undercurrent… Since Stravinsky's impressive display in 1999, Aidan O'Brien has added another four renewals to his tally in a race he is always keen to target. Last year's G2 Coventry Stakes-winning TDN Rising Star River Tiber (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is the lone Ballydoyle representative this time and comes in on the back of a disappointing effort when eighth in Royal Ascot's G3 Jersey Stakes. Previously, he had finished third in the Morny when reportedly undercooked, third in the Middle Park and third in the Irish 2,000 Guineas a la the stable's 2001 July Cup hero Mozart (Ire). He has never looked a pure sprinter, so it will be intriguing to see how he fares now that he has been firmly pointed in that direction. Of the remainder, Ed Bethell's stable star Regional (GB) (Territories {Ire}) showed he can really shift when capturing the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup in 1:10.60 in September and warrants respect as one of the race's genuine pure sprinters coming off a solid second in Royal Ascot's five-furlong G1 King Charles III Stakes. Marc Chan's Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) is back a year after finishing third when conditions were more in his favour, so it is probably a stretch to believe he has got faster in that time. Fitri Hay's dual G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes hero Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) enjoyed one of his career-defining moments here when winning the G3 Palace House Stakes on good ground two years ago and it is very possible that he could at last escape being pigeon-holed as just a Royal Ascot horse. Moment of Truth in the Superlative… If one thing is certain, it is that Charlie Appleby will approach the G2 Superlative Stakes with genuine intent each year and this time it is up to the unbeaten TDN Rising Star Ancient Truth (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to fly the flag. Following a debut win over six furlongs on the Rowley Mile track in May with a course-and-distance novice success last month, the homebred looks to do better than his ill-fated full-brother Great Truth (GB) who was fourth in this 12 months ago. Successful on four occasions in this, including with three subsequent Group 1 or Grade I winners, Appleby has his latest protagonist honed and ready. “He's two from two and has got that experience on this track now and I feel he has come forward again from his last run if anything,” he said. “The timing is hopefully suitable and I feel he has hopefully come forward mentally and physically.” Wathnan Racing's G2 Coventry Stakes third Columnist (GB) (Ardad {Ire}) represents the form of that Royal Ascot juvenile feature which took a knock on Thursday in contrast to the Royal meeting's Listed Chesham Stakes. Already boasting two subsequent winners, the seven-furlong contest played host to Teme Valley and Ciaron Maher's runner-up Pentle Bay (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and he gives further indication as to what we are dealing with in terms of Ballydoyle's supremo Bedtime Story (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Trainer George Boughey is hoping that Pentle Bay's inherent stamina will help here. “I think a stiff seven will suit him and he looks like he has a more stout pedigree than a few of them at the top end of the market.” Delius Poised for Grand Prix… ParisLongchamp's G1 Grand Prix de Paris is one of the key races in France that has mainly evaded Jean-Claude Rouget and Coolmore's unbeaten TDN Rising Star Delius (GB) (Frankel {GB}) looks to end a 14-year drought for the Pau-based maestro. He beat Saganti (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) comfortably enough in Chantilly's G3 Prix du Lys last month, but he will have to be every bit as good as he promises to be to deal with the G1 Prix de Diane third Tamfana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), the Wertheimers' G1 Prix du Jockey Club third Sosie (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's G2 Queen's Vase scorer Illinois (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The card's G2 Prix de Malleret also over a mile and a half sees the Diane runner-up Survie (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) tackle The Aga Khan's G3 Prix de la Grotte winner Candala (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) who can be forgiven her eighth in that Chantilly Classic.
