In a desperate finish to the Te Aroha Veterinary Services Te Aroha Cup (2200m) on Monday, race favourite Hula Beat provided rider Sam Weatherley with a fitting birthday gift when he thrust his nose in front at just the right time to claim victory. Weatherley would have been counting the money shortly after turning for home as his mount was travelling like a winner as he looped the field and shot to the front. Shortly afterwards the first signs of panic appeared as firstly Georgian Warrior issued a strong challenge before the pair of Rua Rocks and Ata Rangi entered the fray along the inner. As the quartet hit the line it was the Stephen Marsh-prepared Hula Beat who thrust his nose in front to take the decision over Rua Rocks with Ata Rangi just a nose away in third as Georgian Warrior finished close up in fourth. Marsh was also confident when he saw his charge take control early in the run home and was prepared to excuse him a few wayward tendencies over the closing stages to the contest. “I thought he was going to win by five lengths, but he got a bit distracted and I have said he is not as effective going right handed,” Marsh said. “Sam said he was gawking around at the steeplechase fences and the crowd but when he put his mind back on the job he really knuckled down and got the win. “It was probably a better effort than it may have looked and he is a nice progressive horse that is suited by the winter surfaces.” Marsh will now take a look at some of the options available to the horse over the next few months although he will look to avoid meetings where the tracks offer firmer footing. “We will try and keep him going left-handed so that probably precludes looking at those Ruakaka winter meetings as he is also likely to strike a better surface than he needs up there,” he said. “In saying that he races well at Te Rapa and there is some nice money on offer there and at a few meetings on left-handed tracks coming up so that is likely where we will aim him.” Bred by Westbury Stud owner Gerry Harvey and raced under his New Zealand Thoroughbred Holdings Ltd banner, Hula Beat is a son of Westbury’s resident stallion Redwood and is the last foal of unraced Zabeel mare Limbea. His granddam Dancing Hula is a half-sister to multiple Group One winner Love Dance while he is also closely related to Gr.1 Railway Handicap (1200m) placegetter Tip The Wink. The victory took his career record to four wins from 20 starts while he added another success to an outstanding season for Marsh who currently sits on 87 wins with more than $5million in prizemoney earnt for his Cambridge stable. Quality flat performer Helena Baby added a second string to an already impressive bow as he cruised to a debut victory over fences when taking out the TAJC Hospitality Hurdle (3100m) at Te Aroha on Monday with consummate ease. With racing returning to Te Aroha for the first time since January, the nine-year-old son of Guillotine put on a display befitting of the occasion as he led from barrier rise in the hands of Nick Downs. The John Bell-trained runner hardly put a foot wrong and although chancing the third last fence, punters who installed him as the $1.60 favourite never had a moment of doubt as he strolled to the line seven lengths to the good of Call Me Jack who had chased him forlornly for the final 600m. Bell noted he had been preparing his charge for a future jumping career for the past three years and was confident he would perform to a high level despite not having been sighted in the role on raceday. “He got a little bit tired and put in a couple of short ones (leaps) at the end but he was good enough to get away with it,” Bell said. “We have spent a lot of time getting him ready for this day and my only real concern was the 3100m as he has never been over that sort of distance before. “I’ve always been told that a really good sprinter will make a good hurdler as long they can settle so Nick had to keep him under wraps to make sure he got around, and he did a great job. “Time and patience always works and we have certainly done that with this guy, so now he has had his first taste of it I will need to talk to my jumping buddies as well as having a good chat with Nick about where they think we should be aiming him.” Bred by Windsor Park Stud, Helena Baby made a barnstorming start to his racing career in New Zealand when he put together a five-race winning sequence during the winter of 2019, including victory in the Listed Opunake Cup (1400m) of that season. After finishing third to champion mare Melody Belle in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) to close out that campaign the John Bell-trained gelding transferred to Hong Kong where he had a further 14 starts which resulted in a pair of minor placings, before returning to New Zealand where he has won two further races (including a second Opunake Cup) before Monday’s hurdle victory. His 45 career starts have now netted over $300,000 in prizemoney. View the full article

What Warwick Farm Races Where Warwick Farm Racecourse – 2 Hume Hwy, Warwick Farm NSW 2170 When Wednesday, June 5, 2024 First Race 12:15pm AEST Visit Dabble Warwick Farm Racecourse is the destination for metro racing on Wednesday afternoon, with a competitive eight-part program set to get underway at 12:15pm local time. The rail is out +5m between the 1000m marker to winning post, while the remainder is out +3m. The weather in the lead-up should have the track in Good 4 condition; however, with plenty of rain forecast on the day, expect a downgrade into the Soft range at some stage. Best Bet at Warwick Farm: Earth Dance A timely midrace move at Gosford on May 16 gave Earth Dance his first Australian win. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained import was given an expert steer by Joshua Parr, taking off in the middle stages to secure a dominant 1.5-length victory. Barrier seven should allow Parr to take up a spot somewhere mid-field with cover, and if the speed isn’t on, Earth Dance could dash away with the prize in this BM72 test. Best Bet Race 5 – #1 Earth Dance (7) 4yo Gelding | T: Peter & Paul Snowden | J: Joshua Parr (59.5kg) Bet with PlayUp Next Best at Warwick Farm: Inquiring Minds Inquiring Minds narrowly justified the short price with online bookmakers when saluting at this course and distance on May 22. It was a nervy watch for punters, as the son of Kingman was exposed a long way from home and just scraped home under James McDonald. Nash Rawiller takes the reins this time, and with a similar setup for this progressive European import, Inquiring Minds looks to be too classy for this lot. Next Best Race 8 – #2 Inquiring Minds (5) 4yo Horse | T: John O’Shea | J: Nash Rawiller (60.5kg) Bet with Neds Next Best Again at Warwick Farm: Cosmonova Cosmonova returns after a 138-day spell and brings an element of class to this BM64 contest. The daughter of Zoustar produced impressive back-to-back wins last campaign before Joseph Pride elected to send her to the paddock, and she doesn’t seem to have missed a step at the trials leading into this. She can hold a spot from barrier two, and provided she’s at her peak first-up, Cosmonova should prove hard to hold out. What Sandown Lakeside Races Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171 When Wednesday, June 5, 2024 First Race 12:25pm AEST Visit Dabble The Melbourne Racing Club will host its second meeting in four days at Sandown Racecourse, with a very competitive eight-race card scheduled to be run on the Lakeside track this Wednesday afternoon. Although the track was rated as a Good 4 at the time of acceptances, there is rain forecast to fall on Wednesday, so it is possible that the meeting will be run on a Soft surface. The rail will be in the +3m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race set to jump at 12:25pm AEST. Best Bet at Sandown: Oak Hill Oak Hill returned from a 20-week spell at this track and trip on May 8, when the Mike Moroney-trained gelding stormed home from deep to win despite a difficult run. It was a career highlight for the three-year-old, who has won twice from his four career starts. With Damian Lane jumping back aboard, and after drawing a good barrier (4), Oak Hill will only need to produce a similar finish to bring up back-to-back wins. Best Bet Race 8 – #7 Oak Hill (4) 3yo Gelding | T: Mike Moroney | J: Damian Lane (58.5kg) Bet with Neds Next Best at Sandown: Hypeman Matt Laurie and Ethan Brown will combine again with Hypeman as the three-year-old gelding seeks to record his second win in three runs. After taking five runs to break his maiden, the son of Dundeel looked set to bring up back-to-back victories but was swamped by From Pantherland over 1300m at Cranbourne on May 17. If Brown can get Hypeman to jump well and find the front on the rail, he will give a good kick on the home bend and give his rivals something to chase. Next Best Race 3 – #6 Hypeman (5) 3yo Gelding | T: Matt Laurie | J: Ethan Brown (59kg) Bet with Playup Best Value at Sandown: Princess Nefertiti Princess Nefertiti was unlucky first-up at Wangaratta, where she was held up before the home turn, got into a bumping duel with another runner and still led before fading late. Declan Bates has chosen to stick with this mare, and if he can settle midfield off the rail from barrier nine, Princess Nefertiti will be running home strongly to figure in the finish. best Value Race 6 – #8 Princess Nefertiti (9) 4yo Mare | T: Ben Brisbourne | J: Declan Bates (58kg) Bet with Picklebet Sandown Wednesday quaddie tips – 5/6/2024 Sandown quadrella selections Wednesday, June 5, 2024 1-7-8 5-6-7-8 1-2-4-5-7 7-9 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip Horse racing tips View the full article

Pier (outside) winning at Te Aroha on Monday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Former quality three-year-old Pier made a welcome return to racing at Te Aroha on Monday when he strode to an impressive first-up victory in an open 1300m contest. The strapping son of outstanding Rich Hill Stud stallion Proisir hadn’t been seen since finishing sixth in the Group 1 Arrowfield Stakes (1600m) at Hastings last September, and has subsequently been rehabilitating a cannon bone issue. Prepared by the father-and-daughter training partnership of Darryn and Briar Weatherley, the now four-year-old warmed up for his assignment with a comfortable victory over 1000m at the Te Aroha trials last month. Rider Sam Weatherley allowed the gelding to find his feet at the rear of the field and was still back a clear last with 600m to travel. Pier looped the field rounding the home bend and once he found clear air out widest on the track, he unleashed a powerful sprint that carried him to a convincing one length victory over Dusty Road who fought on bravely after making the pace throughout and Fonteyn who stuck well for third. Weatherley was delighted with the result, although his first reaction was one of relief. “A big sigh of relief and very happy to see him do that,” he said. “The big question mark for me was the track, which was more testing than we would have liked, but like a good horse he copped everything that was thrown at him and still got the job done. “I also thought he may be one run short, but those really top athletes just have that ability to give their best even when not everything is in their favour and he showed that today.” Weatherley has always held the highest opinion of his charge and that hasn’t changed over the past year. “It has been a real exercise in patience as he had that niggly problem and we had to give him a good break,” he said. “We did everything we were told and his x-rays since then have been very good. “He handled his trial well, so we pressed on and now he has had this race I’m going to tip him out again and get ready for the spring. “This will have topped up his confidence as it has certainly done it for me, so now I can’t wait to get him back in and have him show people just how good he is.” Horse racing news View the full article

Darryl Bradley winning the 2016 edition of the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) aboard El Soldado. Photo: Race Images Central Districts jockey Darryl Bradley has been in a career transition over the last few years, and he feels now is the right time to officially call time on his riding career. It brings the curtain down on four decades in the saddle where the 57-year-old horseman has recorded 1,832 wins, and 103 of those at stakes level. For the last five years, Bradley has been transitioning to a career as a racecourse manager, for which he is now the track manager of Manawatu Harness Racing Club in Palmerston North, following stints at Awapuni and Foxton racecourses. “I knew my riding career was starting to dry up, so I was searching for another job, and I was lucky enough to get the course manager’s job at Foxton Racing Club five-and-a-half years ago. That was a great start,” Bradley said. “The club allowed me to continue doing track work and riding raceday. “I really started to enjoy course management and I was told Foxton would never be a raceday venue again and I wanted to grow and be a racecourse manager. Manawatu Harness (track manager job) came up a little while later and I got the job, and I am very grateful.” While Bradley made a career in the saddle, harness racing isn’t foreign to him, having grown up with a dual-code trainer father, Graham Bradley. “I was brought up in harness when I was an apprentice, because my father trained both codes,” Bradley said. “My career is all due to my father, who was a sheep and beef farmer. His father was into harness and he used to drive in races himself. “We moved to Stratford and Dad started to get a little (racing) team around him of both codes – thoroughbreds and standardbreds.” Surrounded by both thoroughbreds and standardbreds growing up, it was the former that captured a young Bradley’s imagination, and he was intent on pursuing a career as a jockey. “When I was a kid, even though I had very little to do with racing, I loved the horses, the speed and the colours, and I always said ‘I want to be a jockey when I grow up’,” he said. However, he still held a passion for harness racing, so attempted to go down both paths in his youth. “I did my cadetship as a harness driver and did the probationary part of that – I drove in trials. I went to apply for my raceday license and NZTR (New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing) wouldn’t allow me to be a dual code license holder, so naturally I kept my thoroughbred license, I was three years into my apprenticeship by then.” Bradley said his father was instrumental in launching his riding career. “If I hadn’t been with my Dad, I would have been one of those typical apprentices that was mucking out and doing the dirty work all the time and got the occasional slow ride just to keep me happy,” he said. “But with Dad, he put me on everything, and we were self-taught, and I gradually learned the trade.” Bradley rode his first winner for his father in 1984, while his first stakes win came several seasons later. “Choir Path was my first winning ride, he was Dad’s horse,” he said. “My first stakes winner might have been Sir Daniel in the Hawke’s Bay Cup in 1992.” Bradley enjoyed his time working under his father, but decided a move to Palmerston North was important to help further his riding career. “One day I said to Dad, ‘if I want to grow then I have got to go to Manawatu, that is where the heart of Central Districts racing is’, and I moved to Manawatu in 1994,” he said. “I had to gradually get more confidence and more trainers’ support. I rode for Felix Campbell and that is when it started to turn, when you are riding Group winners.” Bradley’s career trajectory continued to rise, and eventually he became the country’s leading jockey in the 1998/99 season when riding 133 winners, eight at stakes level, and more than $1.3 million in prizemoney. “A season before that I really started to hit my straps,” Bradley said. “A very good trainer friend of mine in Invercargill started to push me and said ‘let’s target the premiership next year’.” Bradley said he has had a number of highlights in his career, but none more so than winning the 2016 Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) with El Soldado. “That was a race I thought I would never win,” he said. “I find Ellerslie the hardest track to ride. It was something special about El Soldado winning. “He was only just ahead of Sapio winning the Doomben Cup and New Zealand Cup.” Bradley also enjoyed a lot of success on a number of other horses and enjoyed a solid record with a number of Central Districts trainers. “There was Chad, he won 14 races and I won 13 on him, and I won 12 on King Of Ashford,” he said. “I had a good association with Karren Zimmerman when she was at Otaki, I rode just over 100 winners for her. Then joining the stable of Lisa Latta, the list goes on there. “In the mid-nineties, I got a call from Kay Marsh, Bruce Marsh’s wife and she asked if I wanted to join their stable. That was a big boost to my career, Bruce was a very astute trainer.” Bradley’s riding career also afforded him the ability to travel internationally. “I have ridden in four states of Australia, with a couple of placings and the Group One win in the Doomben Cup,” he said. “When I won the (New Zealand Jockeys’) premiership, I was lucky enough to represent New Zealand in the World Jockeys’ Championship in Japan. After the first day, I was first equal, and I ended up seventh overall. “I rode Sapio in Hong Kong for an international race, I had four months in Malaysia where I rode 17 winners, and I spent two months in Mauritius before I got sick and had to come home. I had three wins there from 20 rides. “If it wasn’t for horse racing, I wouldn’t have probably gone out of the country. The people you meet and places you go are just beautiful.” While Bradley will miss riding on raceday, he said it is the people that have made his career so special. “There are a lot of fantastic people in the industry,” he said Horse racing news View the full article

Darren Weir was on of the top trainers in the country until scandal struck. (Brett Holburt/Racing Photos) Stewards have told the Victorian Racing Tribunal penalty hearing that the use of jiggers was “abhorrent” and wanted a huge penalty handed down to disgraced trainer Darren Weir. Weir, who was rubbed out for four years for possessing jiggers, had the case re-opened against him in December 2022, after police presented closed circuit video footage during criminal proceedings against Weir. Weir staff members Jarrod McLean and Tyson McLean are also caught up in the scandal and stewards say they should also face lengthy bans. “It must be treated sternly … racing’s social license must be protected,” stewards’ legal representative, Albert Dinelli KC, said. “It was cruel and an unfair advantage … they were caught red-handed.” The video footage, according to reports, shows the use of jiggers on three horses — Red Cardinal, Yogi and Tosen Basil. The Red Cardinal footage was recorded just one week before its run in the 2018 Melbourne Cup. It has prompted stewards to seek a 10 year ban for Weir, and seven each for his two staff members. Weir was one of the dominant trainers in horse racing until his suspension, with 36 group 1 wins, including the 2015 Melbourne Cup win with Prince of Penzance, which was ridden by Michelle Payne. Hong Kong has discovered a new sprinting star with Ka Ying Rising (NZ) (Shamexpress) lightweight victory in the HK$4.2 million Gr.3 Sha Tin Vase Handicap (1200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The David Hayes-trained gelding faced his biggest test and most daunting opposition after winning his past three starts, all at Sha Tin, but again showed his class in the eight-horse field. Now with an overall record of five wins at Sha Tin, the three-year successfully faced off with more seasoned rivals led by Group 1 winners Victor The Winner and Invincible Sage. Ka Ying Rising’s demolition job of a quality field in Class 2 at his most recent start when he won by two and a half lengths gave his supporters plenty of faith that he could roll the highly fancied Invincible Sage, who won the HK$22 million Gr.1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1200m) on FWD Champions Day (28 April). Ka Ying Rising was the only three-year-old in the race and also the most inexperienced with just six starts. He also had the benefit of the minimum weight. As expected, Victor The Winner crossed to lead from the outside barrier while Ka Ying Rising, expertly ridden by Karis Teetan, jumped about midfield but quickly drove through to settle fourth. Ka Ying Rising made his run wide and with 20 pounds fewer than Victor The Winner quickly grabbed his more seasoned rival, with Flying Ace and Howdeepisyourlove finishing quickly but never a chance of overhauling the winner. After finally snaring a good inside barrier, Flying Ace (NZ) (Swiss Ace) fought on gamely from gate three to grab second but was no match for Ka Ying Rising. “It’s a bit opportunity and I’ve got to thank David (Hayes) and the owners as I knew the horse was going to come with a light weight,” Teetan said. “All credit to the horse. He is a progressive young fellow and I think he has got a bright future in Hong Kong.” Teetan said Ka Ying Rising gives the feel of a good horse. “I said to David I was pretty happy to get some sort of cover on him and I could just feel he was ready for me to push the button on him.” Hayes could now look ahead for better races for his new stable star who he predicts will only get better and he was full of credit for Teetan’s ride. “What I loved is Karis could just put him in the one-one and give him a beautiful trip, “Hayes said. “Karis said he was sort of switching off late, day dreaming and being a bit young, but when it’s time to push the button, he’s got incredible acceleration and he ran 1m 08.00s Not many horses do that in Hong Kong.” Hayes said the horse had sent him a message tonight when he up on his toes more which showed him the horse has probably had enough now. “It’s a good time to stop him and bring him back for, maybe, the first race of the season (Class 1 HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup Handicap, 1200m),” he said. “He’s really something to get out of bed for and look forward to training next year.” View the full article

Baden-Baden's 11-race programme was abandoned Sunday morning after areas of the Iffezheim venue were deemed unsafe for racing. Relentless downpours hit the track in the preceding days and, with more forecast, course officials were left with no option but to cancel. Sunday's features, the G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft and Listed Silberne Peitsche, have been rescheduled for other meetings. The Silberne Peitsche will now take place next Sunday, June 9, as part of a 10-race programme at Hoppegarten. The Group 2 contest will be staged as the G2 Grosser Wettstar Preis on Cologne's June 16 G2 Union-Rennen undercard. All set for a sloppy unveiling, Insight horse Star of Wonder (Uncle Mo–Starship Warpspeed, by Congrats) rolled late to break his maiden at first asking which earned him a 'TDN Rising Star' badge at Churchill Downs on Sunday afternoon. A half-brother to MGISW Shedaresthedevil (Daredevil), the 2-1 second choice bided his time towards the rear of the field as the frontrunners set a hot pace up the backstretch and into the far turn. Fanning out wide and ending up in the center of the course, the 3-year-old was full of run down the lane and won by three lengths over longshot Padiddle (Empire Maker). Star of Wonder is the 17th 'TDN Rising Star' for his Coolmore-based sire. The final running time was 1:36.81. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) machinery is now in place at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga Springs and is available for use throughout the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival and during the entirety of the 2024 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course, the New York Racing Association announced in a Sunday press release. “Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital is excited to provide PET scan technology to the racehorse population in New York this summer,” said Dr. Katherine Garrett, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Rood & Riddle. “This is a valuable tool that allows us to further evaluate musculoskeletal problems and enhance racehorse safety.” PET scans, which are performed without the use of general anesthesia, assess metabolic activity in a variety of tissues and can be used to identify abnormal metabolic activity in bones that may indicate early signs of injury. “NYRA is committed to expanding the use of advanced equine imaging to help prevent serious injuries and improve scientific research around Thoroughbreds in training,” said David O'Rourke, NYRA President and CEO. “We thank Rood & Riddle for making this technology available at Saratoga for the first time.” PET is unique in that it may detect abnormalities at an earlier stage than other types of diagnostic imaging techniques such as radiographs, CT, or MRI. PET also has high enough resolution to pinpoint the specific abnormal anatomic area of a bone which has implications for accurate diagnosis of high-risk abnormalities. For additional information about PET at Rood & Riddle, please visit https://roodandriddle.com/saratoga-springs/.
