Promising three-year-old Pokuru Gold (NZ) (Darci Brahma) headed to Pukekohe on Saturday and extended his perfect record to three out of three, but this time he really had to work for it. The Darci Brahma gelding was sent out as a $1.40 favourite for the Auckland Co-Op Taxis (1200m) after scoring dominant victories in both of his two previous appearances. He romped home by three and a half lengths on debut on the Cambridge synthetic track back in September, then resumed at Te Rapa on May 18 and picked up right where he left off with another clear-cut win by two and a half lengths. Pokuru Gold jumped smartly from the Pukekohe starting gates on Saturday, then was crossed by both Naxos and Murch. He travelled well just behind the leaders in the hands of Opie Bosson, but then got squeezed backwards when the field tightened up at the home turn. Bosson got him into the clear and began to move him through his gears, and Pokuru Gold soon worked his way past the front-running Murch. But his job was far from over, with lightly raced filly Rareza finishing strongly from off the pace. Pokuru Gold lifted again when Rareza drew up alongside him, and he fought that rival off and won by a long neck. “That was a good effort,” Bosson said. “He got shunted back straightening up, but he was good enough to pick himself up well and fight hard to the line. “He’s quite unassuming, very laid-back and only does what he has to, but he can definitely gallop.” Pokuru Gold is trained by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson for owner-breeder Ian Farrelly. His three-from-three career has so far banked $53,485 in stakes. “It was a really good win today,” assistant trainer Nicole Shailer said. “He’s a promising three-year-old. That’s his third win now and he seems to love the wet. If he comes through this well, we’ll look at a 1000m race at Trentham in a couple of weeks (June 15).” Pokuru Gold is the first named foal out of the winning Stravinsky mare Pokuru Nugget, whose dam Pokuru Star is a sister to the dams of Group One stars Embellish, Diademe and Sacred Star. Progressive three-year-old Eliud (NZ) (Almanzor) took a rise in class with ease at Wanganui on Saturday when racing away with the Property Brokers 3YO 1600. The Almanzor gelding has been held in high regard by Cambridge trainer Tony Pike for some time, and he delivered on that promise at his fourth start at Taranaki in May with a comprehensive maiden success. Pike set a stronger task for Eliud in the open three-year-old contest on Wanganui’s feature day, where he sat a $2.20 favourite in a competitive field that included Bozo, who finished fourth in the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) at $5.20, and Listed winner Loch Katrine ($5.40). In the hands of Michael McNab, Eliud jumped positively from gate four and assumed the role as a rolling pacemaker heading along the back straight, staying well away from the fence. His main rivals in Bozo and Loch Katrine remained within chasing distance of the favourite turning for home and the former looked like she may be looming up to Eliud, but once McNab pushed the button at the 200 metres, he stormed clear to win by an extending 3 ½ length margin. McNab shared Pike’s opinion of the gelding in his early preparations, and was thrilled to see that on display despite the Heavy 10 track conditions. “He’s always shown good ability at home, he was a bit disappointing in his first couple of starts but he’s come back this prep really well,” McNab said. “I cantered a long way down the back in my prelim to have a good look at it, and where I was is the best spot. “My main aim was just to keep him comfortable and not break stride or dip in the ground. That was the key for him and he picked up really well so it was good.” With all still to play for in the final two months of the New Zealand Jockey’s Premiership, McNab tightened the gap on Warren Kennedy with winning trebles at both the Cambridge and Riccarton Synthetic meetings bringing his tally to 114, two shy of Kennedy. Eliud is out of a lightly-tried Rip Van Winkle mare in Pendleton, who among her four career victories in just nine starts picked up the Listed Dunedin Gold Cup (2400m). He was offered by breeder Kevin Hickman’s Valachi Downs at the 2022 Karaka Yearling Sales and was purchased for $320,000 by Waikato Bloodstock, with $35,380 returned on that investment in five starts. ‘The NZ suffix punches well above its weight’ – New Zealand Bloodstock’s Andrew Buick talks to Racing Post on life down under and his famous family Andrew Buick hails from a renowned equestrian family, being brother to dual British champion jockey William and De Burgh Equine’s Martin, while their parents are eight-time Scandinavian champion jockey Walter and dressage rider and showjumper Maria. Here, he tells us about his background and role with New Zealand Bloodstock. It’s fair to say the sport is in your blood Fullstop or comma. Horses and racing were a massive part of our upbringing, which I’m sure has helped all of us enormously career-wise. I’m very grateful for everything they taught me, and the knowledge and advice they keep applying. It’s a great help for me when I’m unsure or have questions about certain things; you can give any of them a ring and the feedback and advice will always be of value. We speak most days and go through the ins and outs of what’s happening. Did you always feel you’d end up working in the industry or were there other interests you might have pursued? We were never pushed into any aspect of the industry, but I’m pretty sure it was on the cards quite early on for all of us. I was never tempted to be a jockey and I think mum and dad are quite happy with having only one in the family as it’s a cut-throat sport being a jockey, and certainly comes with its risks. I probably fancied myself as a footballer at some stage, but quickly found out I was 100 lengths behind the rest, ability-wise. Talk us through your experiences in racing prior to joining New Zealand Bloodstock Fullstop or comma. Although always in touch with horses and being mad keen on racing, the Irish National Stud course really gave me a kick-start and played a key role in the trajectory of my career. The academic aspect of the course is brilliant, but it’s the connections and networking they expose you to that really sets it apart, and it’s a course I would recommend to anyone. After the course I did a stint with John and Thady Gosden, which was brilliant. It was quite surreal to see the calibre of horses they had at the time, and continue to develop and train season after season. I then ventured to Arrowfield Stud in Australia, where I worked through a breeding and sales season. It was a great experience to work for one of Australia’s leading stud farms and fascinating to compare the practices employed to those in the northern hemisphere. My time in Australia provided the perfect platform to my current role at New Zealand Bloodstock as the two nations share common traits among their racing and breeding, and there is a fair degree of crossover. You’ve been with NZB since last July – what does your role as bloodstock representative entail? It’s quite a diverse role but the essence of it is to service the needs and expectations of our vendors and buyers alike. The bloodstock team are on the road inspecting horses for all of our sales throughout the year, so inspections take up a chunk of the calendar, but it’s something we love doing. The farms in New Zealand are stunning and it’s great to see the quality stock coming through. We also attend a lot of trials and racedays to keep up to date with the stock which is performing on the track. It’s a good opportunity to catch up with our clients. We assist them with everything from bloodstock valuations to portfolio management, so we’re kept busy throughout the year. Where are you based, had you been to New Zealand before joining NZB, and how much travelling do you do? The NZB bloodstock team are all based in the Waikato region, an hour south of Auckland, which is where the bulk of the major farms and training centres are located. I’d never been to New Zealand before I came in late July last year, so I didn’t know entirely what to expect. But I was fortunate to have a good friend in George Chittick, who I met on the Irish National Stud course. The Chittick family owns and operates the famed Waikato Stud, which would be one of the best thoroughbred nurseries in the world. George and I are great mates, and we had a good chat before I took on the role and flew down here. He gave me some good advice about what to expect, and, for me, New Zealand and working for New Zealand Bloodstock has exceeded my expectations and then some. We do plenty of travelling both within New Zealand and internationally to keep tabs on both our vendors and our buying bench. Australia is our biggest export market along with Asia, so it’s pivotal we keep encouraging and scouting for new clients and markets to bring down to Karaka for our sales and make sure they get the true Kiwi experience and world-renowned Karaka hospitality, which is second to none and should be on the bucket list for everyone in our industry. NZB recently made me their European representative to go along with my bloodstock role here, so I’ll be back in the UK in time for Royal Ascot to hopefully bring some new clients down for our sales and also look after our valued recurring purchasers. New Zealand racing and bloodstock is possibly – fairly or unfairly – overshadowed by neighbour Australia; what would you advocate as the USPs of the industry in NZ? Australia has got a thriving racing industry, as we know, and is like a much bigger brother to New Zealand, with a foal crop more than five times the size. But the unique selling points of New Zealand include the incredible environment in which the stock are raised, expert horsemanship, value for money and, most importantly, racetrack performance. It is also a great place to visit and in the past 12 months the prize-money has risen significantly, so there are a lot of positives. It’s safe to say the NZ suffix punches well above its weight, and New Zealand-bred horses are very hard to beat wherever they go. Over the past five seasons New Zealand-bred horses have won more than 20 per cent of the Group 1 races in Australia, yet account for 7.5 per cent of the horse population, so the statistics are quite compelling. Horses like So You Think, Little Bridge and Starcraft all carried the NZ suffix to elite success in Europe, while in Hong Kong the two best horses, Golden Sixty and Lucky Sweynesse, were both sold through the NZB Ready to Run Breeze-Up Sale. I’d say climate is a big factor in the success. The land and scenery here would be quite similar to Ireland, with lush pasture, cold winters and overall perfect conditions to breed tough, sound and quality racehorses. More generally in terms of the sport in the southern and northern hemispheres, what one thing could each learn from the other and do a bit better? New Zealand and Australia do a terrific job of promoting syndication as a form of ownership. With more people involved and a broader base to share the experience, it gives the sport more relevance and creates a great shared experience. The feeling in Europe is they keep relying on the same pool of owners, and it looks very hard to be competitive against the big outfits. One aspect I do miss when attending and watching racing in both New Zealand and Australia are the scenic, testing and undulating tracks. The UK especially is very blessed to have tracks such as Goodwood, Newmarket and Epsom, which are incredible racecourses and test the horses in a unique way. Whether ridden by your brother William or not, any favourite racehorses down the years? Will has sat on some superstars over the years but Blue Point gets the tick from me. He never shied away from a battle and I loved watching him clash with Battaash and other world-class sprinters. His King’s Stand-Diamond Jubilee double was breathtaking and to be one of very few horses to do the Tuesday-Saturday double speaks volumes of him as a racehorse. He’s had a terrific start to his stud career, which has been great to follow. View the full article

Young jockeys Keith and Erik Asmussen, both sons of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, were both injured Saturday in separate races at Churchill Downs and Lone Star Park, respectively. Keith Asmussen was injured at about 12:47 p.m. ET in the 1st race at Churchill, a $10,000 claimer for fillies and mares three and up. The Equibase chart said his mount, Singsational (Audible) “was jostled between horses and squeezed back at the start, clipped a rival's hind heels and fell at the eleven sixteenths pole, then walked off.” Singsational, who was caught by outriders and widely reported as uninjured, is trained by Steve Asmussen. Keith Asmussen was transported to the hospital with extensive injuries, including a fractured right femur and three broken ribs, and is scheduled to have surgery Sunday morning. He updated his X account Saturday evening, saying: “Singsational and I clipped heels and fell this afternoon at CD. I fractured my left femur, 3 ribs, and have right lower lung contusions + hemopneumothorax. Surgery scheduled for tomorrow morning, thank you to everyone that has reached out with love and well wishes!” Just under three hours later, Erik Asmussen was involved in an incident just past the wire in the 1st race at Lone Star. He had the early lead in the $10,000 starter optional claiming race, but gave way late to finish sixth and had crossed the wire when his mount, Good Heart (Good Samaritan) fell. Mary Ramellini of Daily Racing Form later reported on X, “Apprentice jockey Erik #Asmussen is being evaluated at a local hospital after being thrown past the wire in the first race Saturday at #LoneStarPark and appears to have escaped serious injury, according to his agent, Travis Church.” Good Heart, trained by Steve Roubion, was vanned off. According to official statistics, Keith Asmussen has been riding since 2020 and has 131 wins from 946 starts. He got his first graded stakes win earlier this year aboard Lemon Muffin (Collected) for trainer D. Wayne Lukas in the GIII Honeybee S. at Oaklawn Park. He had his first GI Kentucky Derby mount last month with the Lukas-trained Just Steel (Justify), who finished 17th. Erik Asmussen has been riding since 2023 and has 42 wins from 307 mounts. He won his first black-type race earlier this year in the San Jacinto Turf S. with No Mas Tequila (Northern Afleet). by Tim Wilkin and Editorial Staff For the first time since before the GI Kentucky Derby, Mystik Dan (Goldencents), had a workout. And trainer Kenny McPeek is getting more and more confident that his colt, winner of the Derby and second in the GI Preakness, will be in the starting gate at Saratoga Race Course for the GI Belmont S. on June 8. Mystik Dan, with exercise rider Danny Ramsey aboard, went five furlongs in 1:01.59 (2/5) on the Oklahoma Training Track Saturday morning. He worked in company with Gould's Gold (Goldencents). McPeek has kept the promise that he would take his time deciding whether or not Mystik Dan would run in the Belmont. The deadline is quickly approaching as the draw for the race is Monday. A final answer should come Sunday. “This was a nice, solid breeze,” McPeek said after the 5:30 a.m. work. “His gallop out was impressive; he kept on going. He is actually acting like his energy level is getting higher from the Derby-to-Preakness-to-Belmont, which you have to have.” As long as Mystik Dan, owned by Lance Gasaway, 4 G Racing LLC, Daniel Hamby III and Valley View Farm LLC, continues to gobble up his feed at night and his bloodwork is good, he will become the first horse since War of Will (War Front) in 2019 to run in all three legs of the Triple Crown (Max Player {Honor Code} did it in 2020, but that series was spread out over four months because of COVID). Thorpedo Anna to the outside of Midnight Concerto | Sarah Andrew “If everything goes good the next day or two, he will run there {Belmont},” McPeek said. “And she'll run in the other one.” She is Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna), his fast 3-year-old filly who was last seen winning the GI Kentucky Oaks. McPeek has thought about running her against the boys in the Belmont, but if Mystik Dan goes there, she will head to the GI Acorn against fillies on Friday at Saratoga. Thorpedo Anna, owned by Brookdale Racing Inc., Mark Edwards, Judy B. Hicks and Magdalena Racing (Sherri McPeek), worked five furlongs in 1:02.09 (4/5) in company with Midnight Concerto (Mendelssohn). “She just needed a nice little stretch out,” McPeek said. “She keeps herself fit; she's a natural athlete.” Brown Getting Closer to Running Two in Belmont It looks more and more likely that the Chad Brown barn will have two runners in the Belmont S. at Saratoga. One is the expected morning-line favorite in Sierra Leone (Gun Runner), who has been pointed to this race since losing the Kentucky Derby by a gut-wrenching nose on the first Saturday in May. Sierra Leone inside Domestic Product | Sarah Andrew Brown is hopeful that Tuscan Gold (Medaglia d'Oro) will join Sierra Leone in the starting gate on June 8. Both horses turned in their final works for the race on Saturday. Sierra Leone, owned by Peter M. Brant, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg and Brook T. Smith, worked four furlongs in :49.32 (13/51) on the Oklahoma Training Track in company with Domestic Product (Practical Joke). Just over an hour later, at 8:45 a.m., William H. Lawrence, Walmac Farm and Stonestreet Stables LLC's Tuscan Gold went four furlongs in :48.38 (6/18) on the main track. He worked with the unraced Clever Mischief (Into Mischief). “I am leaning towards running him,” Brown said outside his barn on the Oklahoma. Brown said he was excited about Tuscan Gold's chances in the Preakness two weeks ago, but the colt did not like the muddy track and was never a factor, finishing fourth. “He was fresh, he was training great, and I really liked his chances going into that race,” Brown said. “I felt terrible going into the first turn; he was clearly not handling the track. He was trying to lose contact with the field and the jockey (Tyler Gaffalione) was doing the best he could to stay after him and keep him in the game, but it just wasn't for him. I am actually surprised he ran fourth with as little effort as he showed.” If Tuscan Gold does run in the Belmont, he'll have a new jockey in Joel Rosario. Brown also took Gaffalione off Sierra Leone and replaced him with Flavien Prat. Pletcher Full of Cliches When the work was done Saturday morning, Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said all the right things about the three horses he is pointing to the Belmont: Antiquarian (Preservationist), Mindframe (Constitution) and Protective (Medaglia d'Oro). “I thought they all went great … well-executed breezes … the horses seemed to be moving well … finished out strongly …galloped out well,” Pletcher said as he stood outside his office on the Oklahoma Training Track. Then he smiled. Mindframe outside of Protective | Sarah Andrew “All the cliches every trainer will give you,” he said and then got serious. “I was pleased with all of them.” Centennial Farms' Antiquarian worked four furlongs in :49.99 (25/51) in company with 3-year-old Be You (Curlin). Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables LLC's Mindframe worked four furlongs in company with Repole Stable's Protective and they were timed in :50.26 (35/51). “I think all three of them will appreciate the mile and a quarter (Belmont distance),” Pletcher said. Antiquarian, who will be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, won the GIII Peter Pan S. in his last start. Mindframe has been ultra impressive in his first two starts, winning by a combined 21 1/4 lengths and Pletcher has confidence he can run with the big boys. He will be ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr. Protective has yet to win a race but the maiden was third in the GII Wood Memorial S. and third in the Peter Pan. Pletcher said he will “most likely” have Tyler Gaffalione riding Protective. Mott Needs to Know On Sunday morning, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott plans on working Resilience (Into Mischief) on the Oklahoma Training Track. If he likes how he goes, Resilience will get another chance to run 1 1/4 miles, this time in the Belmont S. The first time he ran the distance, it didn't go so good as Resilience ran sixth in the Kentucky Derby, beaten five lengths by Mystik Dan (Goldencents). Mott isn't convinced his colt doesn't want to go that far. “We want to give him another shot to make sure,” Mott said outside his office on the Oklahoma Saturday morning. “If he were to run well, then, ok, you can consider the (GI) Travers. If you don't run well, you have to start thinking about other stuff. He is doing good; if he wasn't, we would not even consider this.” Owned by Emily Bushnell and Ric Waldman, Resilience has won two of four starts this year, including the Wood Memorial. He made a bid in the Derby but faded, giving the indication he might not like the distance. Mott said that if the Belmont were being run at its traditional distance of 1 1/2 miles, Resilience would be sitting it out. “He had a good trip (in the Derby). He made a run. He flattened out,” Mott said. “Is he going to flatten out again at a mile and a quarter? If he does, then we'll know.” Dornoch Regroups with Sharp Work Dornoch (Good Magic), a full-brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage, has regrouped for West Paces Racing, R.A. Hill Stable, Belmar Racing and Breeding, Two Eight Racing, and Pine Racing Stables after a troubled 10th in the Kentucky Derby with four furlongs on the Oklahoma in :48.68 (3/39) Saturday morning in company with Ramblin' Wreck (Redesdale). Exercise rider Priscilla Schaefer was aboard. Dornoch on the rail with Ramblin' Wreck outside | Sarah Andrew “I had him in :48 and change,” said trainer Danny Gargan. “He was rolling early but then I had him slow down a little bit. He worked well.” As long as Dornoch continues to progress, Gargan told the Belmont notes team the 3-year-old will start in Saturday's Belmont S. “We are hoping,” said Gargan. “We just have to stay focused and get lucky. Hopefully, have a good trip this time. “He's training really well. He worked good. We are really pleased with him,” said Gargan. “He is doing everything we want right now.” The dual Grade II winner will have regular reinsman Luis Saez aboard in the Belmont. Honor Marie Preps At Churchill Honor Marie (Honor Code), a troubled eighth to Mystik Dan in the Kentucky Derby, tuned up for the Belmont with a half-mile breeze Saturday morning under the watchful eye of trainer Whit Beckman at Churchill Downs. Runner-up to Catching Freedom (Constitution) in the GII Louisiana Derby, last year's GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. hero covered the distance in :48.40 (48/166) outside of his stablemate Anthem King (Bolt d'Oro), a maiden winner at Turfway Mar. 8 and a latest fourth to Belmont-bound 'TDN Rising Star' Mindframe (Constitution) in a Derby Day allowance beneath the Twin Spires. The duo went the opening quarter-mile in :24.20, according to clocker Adam Wallace. “He bounced out of the Derby in great shape,” Beckman told the Churchill Downs notes team. “We toyed for a little bit about running back in the Preakness but thought he'd do better with a little more time between starts. He had a really rough trip in the Derby and still finished up well.” Florent Geroux takes over from the injured Ben Curtis for the Belmont. Baffert BSRF Runners Tune Up at Santa Anita Trainer Bob Baffert will not be represented in Saturday's Belmont S., but the barn will nevertheless be active in a pair of undercard races, with 'TDN Rising Star' Prince of Monaco (Speightstown) and Preakness seventh Imagination (Good Magic) headed to the GI Woody Stephens S. and National Treasure (Quality Road) set for the GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. On Saturday morning at Santa Anita, last year's GI Del Mar Futurity hero Prince of Monaco drilled six furlongs in 1:11.20 as he prepares for his first appearance since a fifth in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. National Treasure, unraced since a game fourth in the G1 Saudi Cup on Feb. 24, went a half-mile in :48.20. Imagination worked three-quarters of a mile in 1:11.40 on Friday. “All three look good. They'll leave [Sunday],” Baffert said. While it is true that there is only one Derby, and what a Derby that was on Saturday, 24 hours after the Epsom jamboree there is a Classic of a different kind to help ease the comedown. Chantilly hosts the 184th renewal of the G1 Qatar Prix du Jockey Club, which is a special if idiosyncratic monument in its own right staged over the rare trip of 10 1/2 furlongs. Therefore offering a contrasting test to the Blue Riband, the old “French Derby” is losing no ground on its counterpart if recent results are anything to go by. Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) was the fifth straight winner out of the very top drawer 12 months ago, while the 2016 hero Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) was another to make his mark on the elite stage following his exploits here. At this stage, it is difficult to pinpoint a colt that could belong in that bracket, but there is always the prospect that one might spring forth, particularly among the unexposed. One who fits that bill and could be on a steep ascent is Haras de la Morsangliere's unbeaten Look De Vega (GB) by the 2010 winner Lope De Vega (Ire) whose own sire Shamardal won the first Jockey Club after the shift from its past mile-and-a-half distance. Steadily brought to a peak by Carlos and Yann Lerner, the relative of another winner of the race in its current guise in Lawman (Fr) gave some indication as to his raw material when winning ParisLongchamp's Prix de Croissy conditions event last month. There is very little to go on in terms of form as to how he measures up, but he just looks a bit special. Yann Lerner took him to Chantilly for a recent gallop and said, “He adapted very well to the course and he proved inch-perfect when it came to negotiating the final uphill section of the course. We're aware of his considerable potential. My father was lucky enough to train Anabaa Blue and Volvoreta and I think he's in that league.” “He shows a propensity for getting away well from the gates, has an excellent mindset and Ronan Thomas knows everything there is to know about the colt,” he added. “My father took a great liking to the colt at the sales and was very surprised to learn that he was a buy-back, so we made enquiries with the colt's breeders Joëlle Mestrallet and Lucien Urano. They retained a 50% stake in the colt, but we acquired a share and invited several of our owners to do the same.” The Power Of The Guineas… Not that City Of Troy was a big factor in the 2,000 Guineas, but his win on Saturday only adds to the growing sense that it was an above-average renewal of the Classic. Jeff Smith's Ghostwriter (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was fourth at Newmarket and his trainer Clive Cox is relishing the opportunity of saddling a rare middle-distance Classic contender who is particularly favourably drawn in two. “We don't have to worry about being out wide now, so thank goodness,” he said. “He's only performed on a quicker surface, so that's a territory we're just going to have to find out about, but I'm confident with the way he moves that he'll handle himself on softer ground. Without a shadow of a doubt, the form of the Guineas is already showing how strong a Guineas it was. You have the first and second in the Irish Guineas and then the sixth horse winning the Sandy Lane.” Ballydoyle have finally emerged front-and-centre and are represented here by Diego Velazquez (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who is up to a more suitable trip having caught the eye when fourth in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains. “We felt a mile is as short as he wanted to go and we thought a mile and a quarter might be his ideal trip,” Aidan O'Brien said. “Obviously he could get further, but we always viewed him as a French Derby horse more than anything else. We thought and hoped Chantilly would suit. He stays and he's uncomplicated. We definitely think he has plenty of class, especially for a mile-and-a-quarter horse.” Fast Track To Glory? Wathnan Racing's Fast Tracker (GB) (Churchill {Ire}) is another well draw in five and one for the shortlist following his seven-length success in the track's Listed Prix de Suresnes which Ace Impact had won en route to glory here in 2023. Trainer Henri-Alex Pantall is happy that his colt is at his prime and suggested that he will need to be prominent from the outset on Sunday. “He has now reached maturity, he is a straightforward ride, races handily and doesn't pull,” he explained. “He exhibits just one flaw in his racing style, as he takes time to pick up when the pace quickens. He is pretty quick leaving the gates, but ideally we'd like to have two or three leaders in the race. He won't mind if the ground dries out, even if it that isn't expected to be the case.” Will Menuisier Get His Day In The Sun? Andre Fabre has a trio engaged, with the form choice undoubtedly Baron Edouard De Rothschild's TDN Rising Star Alcantor (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) who was ahead of Diego Velazquez when third in the Poulains. He was second to Guy Pariente, Thomas Lines and Qatar Racing's Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) in the G1 Criterium International and to say that the latter's trainer David Menuisier has been knocking on the door in the 2024 Classics is an understatement. “He's a machine. One day, he'll show the same class in the afternoon as he does in the morning,” Menuisier said. “Sunway proved last year that he was a very good horse and has a big race in him. In my opinion, Sunway is a bit like a gifted child. Sometimes it's the brightest kids who flunk their exams. In his two outings this year, he was ridden aggressively and maybe it wasn't the right thing to do–maybe he'll be better being held up rather than racing from the front.” The Support Acts… Chantilly's black-type action begins with the Listed Prix la Fleche for the 2-year-olds, where Haras d'Etreham's first-crop sire Hello Youmzain (Fr) is represented by the course-and-distance winner Allee De Bercy (Fr), continues with the G2 Prix du Gros-Chene where the super-charged Ponntos (Ire) (Power {GB}) takes centre stage, while the three other pattern races include an open-looking G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly boasting the dual Group 1 winner Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}). At Baden-Baden, the G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft sees TDN Rising Star Mr Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}) look to bounce back from his abject seasonal bow when a distant fourth to the re-opposing Lordano (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in Cologne's G2 Carl Jaspers Preis.
