  1. Group 1 winner Sunway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) is pointing for the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot at the end of the month, according to trainer David Menuisier. A winner of the G1 Criterium International in his final start at two for Guy Pariente, Thomas Lines and Qatar Racing, the full-brother to Group 1 winner and young sire Sealiway (Fr) ran second in the G3 Prix Greffulhe at second asking at three. Seventh in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club, he rebounded to take second, by just three-quarters of a length, in the G1 Irish Derby at the Curragh on June 30. “He's absolutely grand, it seems like he didn't have a hard race and fingers crossed we can run him in the King George,” said Menuisier. “That would be the race to run him in if we could. He was unlucky in the Prix du Jockey Club but he had definitely come on for his previous races and I think he had definitely come on for his last run. I don't know whether he was a bit rusty or whatever. “The horse is so talented that he doesn't do much at home, so sometimes he needs a bit of a reminder that he's in competition–he just needed a couple of races to put him back in the mood. “He doesn't need cheekpieces, I run him in a sheepskin noseband and that seems to do the trick, I don't think he needs any more than that.” The post King George In The Cards For Sunway appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 2. A share in the Haras d'Etreham stallion Hello Youmzain (Fr) has been added to the Arqana Online Pop-Up Sale scheduled for Friday, July 12. The share gives the right to two coverings a year, an identical offering to the one that fetched €180,000 from Laurent Benoit, acting on behalf of Haras des Sablonnets, on the Arqana Online platform last month. Hello Youmzain was a high-class sprinter for the Kevin Ryan yard, notably winning the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup and G1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes. He stood his first season at Haras d'Etreham in 2021 and his first crop of juveniles to race this year include the G2 Coventry Stakes runner-up Electrolyte (Ire), who was bought by Wathnan Racing for £220,000 at the Goffs UK Doncaster Breeze-up Sale. Bidding on the lots–which also include a share in the Aga Khan Studs stallion Zarak (Fr)–will take place between 5-6pm local time, with registration for bidding already open on www.arqanaonline.com. 4. The BBC has confirmed that three women murdered in a crossbow attack in Bushey, Hertfordshire are the wife and two daughters of BBC racing commentator John Hunt. Carol Hunt, 61, died alongside two of her daughters, Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, following an attack at the family's home on Tuesday evening. The suspected killer, Kyle Clifford, 26, is currently on the run and believed by police to be armed. A major manhunt is underway across the Hertfordshire and north London area of England. In a press conference on Wednesday, Chief Superintendent Jon Simpson from Hertfordshire Police said, “Our overarching objective today is to protect public safety and to locate Kyle Clifford, who is wanted in connection with the murder of the three women in what we believe is a targeted incident. “We have extensive police resources deployed to various locations in north London and also the Bushey area. “The manhunt also involves armed police officers and specialist search teams responding at pace in the wake of what has been a horrific incident involving what is currently believed to be a crossbow, but other weapons may also have been used.” A former policeman, John Hunt, a longstanding and widely respected commentator for BBC Five Live and Sky Sports Racing, had been on duty at Lingfield racecourse on Tuesday. Along with his work in horseracing, he is regularly part of the BBC sports team covering the Olympics. His many friends in the racing world include ITV racing presenter Matt Chapman, who said in a post on social media, “No words needed for what has happened to @HuntyCaller and family today. Impossible to comprehend the pain. Just know we are all here for you John. We love you pal – racing loves you.” The post Wife and Daughters of BBC Commentator John Hunt Killed in Crossbow Attack appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 5. Australian Group 1 winner Espiona (Aus) will be offered by agent Glenesk Thoroughbreds in a standalone virtual sale set to be held by Magic Millions at 3pm (AEST) on Wednesday, July 31. Trained by Chris Waller for Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds, Espiona won seven of her 24 starts and earned over A$3.3 million in prize-money during her illustrious career, with her biggest success coming in 2023 when she defeated the multiple Group 1 heroine Pride Of Jenni (Aus) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) by a nose to win the G1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill. The daughter of Extreme Choice (Aus) was also placed at the top level on multiple occasions, including when finishing third in February's Black Caviar Lightning at Flemington, passing the post less than a length behind the 10-time Group 1 winner Imperatriz (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) who later sold virtually for a record-breaking A$6.6m at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. “She was a very tough horse,” Waller said of Espiona. “But her racing pattern made it difficult to get the best from her. Like we saw this preparation, she was often in the company of the very best Australian sprinters, and she had enough ability to beat anything. “She was lightly raced and certainly from a pedigree and ability perspective, she is as good as you need and certainly capable of producing very good quality colts and fillies which would hype their chance in Group 1 races.” Espiona was purchased for A$190,000 by Star Thoroughbreds and Randwick Bloodstock Agency's Brett Howard from the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. She is out of a full-sister to the Listed-winning Bonny O'Reilly (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}), while her second dam is a half-sister to the multiple top-level winners Glamour Puss (NZ) (Tale of the Cat) and Vision And Power (NZ) (Carnegie {Ire}). “We are honoured to have been entrusted by Denise Martin and her syndicate of owners to present Espiona to prospective buyers,” said Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch. “Through her career she raced against elite horses and proved herself one of the best of her generation.” “Being able to offer her through a standalone virtual sale will give the owners, vendor, prospective buyers and interested parties the opportunity to see her sell via a streamlined process by a world-class auctioneer [Clint Donovan]. “It will provide Espiona a fitting sales process to take her to the next journey of her life.” The post Standalone Virtual Sale Announced for Australian Sprinting Star Espiona appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 6. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-With the mighty successful prelim–the GI Belmont Stakes–now part of Saratoga's storied history, it is time to move on to the main event. The 40-day racing season, the 156th since the first meet was staged in 1863, commences Thursday with an 11-race program at Saratoga Race Course, America's oldest sporting venue. The listed six-furlong $175,000 Schuylerville S., a graded stakes for 2-year-old fillies through last year, is the traditional opening-day feature. The first post is at 1:10 p.m. By the time the meet concludes on Labor Day, Sept. 2, more than 400 races will have been contested on dirt and turf. The New York Racing Association has scheduled 71 stakes worth $20.75 million in purses. There are 41 graded stakes spread across the season, 18 of them at the top-level, Grade I. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, 70, has been a Saratoga regular since 1987 and has been the leading trainer nine times. Last year, with a powerful roster of stars, he won five stakes at Saratoga which helped him lock up the Eclipse Award. Mott, based in Saratoga throughout the April-November training season, said the race meet is the high point of the year for him. “All the best racing is up here,” Mott said. “They've got good racing at different points along the way, Keeneland, Churchill, but it really all kind of comes together here. For the Midwest, and in the East Coast, I think this is the championship meet. Doesn't mean that's where all the good races are, but they have stakes almost every day here. You see a lot of good racing. A lot of good horses show up and are ready to go this time of year. And you see a lot of good 2-year-old racing, so the people that like to look into the future, you can get an indication of what might show up next year.” The Belmont was moved to Saratoga Race Course for the first time in its history while Belmont Park is undergoing a massive makeover. The final stop in the Triple Crown series was a big hit on June 8 in a city used to major-league racing and with NYRA setting an attendance limit at 50,000, it sold out quickly. NYRA said the four-day festival drew a total attendance of 120,028 and the handle was $197.4 million. It was a huge economic gift for merchants like Jason Fitch and his brothers, who operate King's Tavern across Union Ave. from the track and The Saratoga City Tavern on Caroline Street. This will be the Fitch brothers' 11th season at King's and Jason said having the Triple Crown race in town created a situation unlike any other. “It was so busy for the Belmont. It felt like it felt like one track season in one day,” he said. “It was absolutely insane, but it was a good, controlled insane. It seemed like it was just good people, positive attitudes, no problems.” In addition to the high-caliber racing, the Saratoga season includes The Jockey Club's Round Table on Thursday, Aug. 1; annual induction for the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame on Aug. 2; Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga Sale, Aug. 5-6; as well as other industry events. Jockey Joel Rosario, 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) and 2017 Horse of the Year Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) were elected in the contemporary division in their first year of eligibility. In 2023, Linda Rice won the last race of the meet to tie Chad Brown for the trainer's title with 35 victories. It was Brown's third-straight meet title, sixth overall and Rice's second. In recent years, Brown and 14-time champion Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher have vied for the top spot. Pletcher enters the meet with 698 victories at Saratoga with a record 44 Grade I scores. Five-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. won his fifth Saratoga riding title last summer with 62 victories, 25 more than his brother Jose. As usual, weather conditions will have a huge role in the meet's business success. Rainy weather last summer forced NYRA to move 65 races off the turf, leading to dozens of scratches, and handle fell 9.9% from the 2022 figure when only 16 races were switched to the dirt. While there is at least one Grade I race on each of the eight Saturdays, the $1.25-million GI Travers Stakes on Aug. 24 and the $1-million GI Whitney Stakes on Aug. 3 are the marquee events of the season and anchor huge stakes programs. In 2023, there was the rare meeting of the winners of the Triple Crown races in the Travers. Belmont winner Arcangelo (Arrogate) prevailed in the Travers, which helped him clinch the 3-year-old male Eclipse Award. It is possible that the three race winners could all be in the Travers field again this summer. GI Preakness S. winner Seize the Grey (Arrogate) and Belmont winner Dornoch (Good Magic) are on course for the 1 1/4-miles test. GI Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan (Goldencents), the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races this year, was given time off after his eighth-place finish in the Belmont. He recently returned from his time at the farm to trainer Kenny McPeek's barn at Churchill Downs. “He's on a slow-return right now,” McPeek said. “We're not in any hurry with him. He had a hard winter-spring campaign. We're kind of regrouping with him. No decisions on where he is next.” McPeek did not rule out the Travers, but suggested it would be a reach to have him ready. “We'd like to think we could get him back for the Travers,” McPeek said, “although I'm a little worried about running in that race off a layoff, but we'll see.” McPeek said that the Travers remains a possibility for his star 3-year-old filly Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna), who he said “is begging to run again.” The GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Acorn Stakes winner is scheduled to make her next start in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks on July 20 at Saratoga. “And then we're open on what happens after that, either the [GI] Alabama or the Travers,” McPeek said. During the COVID-disjointed 2020 season, McPeek won the Preakness with Swiss Skydiver after her victory in the Alabama. He may do something similar with Thorpedo Anna, the only 3-year-old in the NTRA top 10. “Let's see how she runs in the Coaching Club,” he said. “We don't even nominate until the other side of it. If she were ultra-impressive in that, yes, I'm going to seriously consider the Travers. But if she has to work at it to beat the fillies, or it depends on who is headed to the Travers. But, we need to get through the Coaching Club first. We don't want to put the cart before the horse, right?” Trainer Danny Gargan secured his first Grade I victory when Dornoch won the Belmont at 17-1 over Mindframe (Constitution) and favorite Sierra Leone (Gun Runner). Gargan is planning to run Dornoch in the GI Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 20, and wants to continue on to the Travers. “I think this horse can win the Travers, if we get the right post and the right set-up,” Gargan said. “He won the Belmont.” Gargan said that when Dornoch turned in a bullet work on June 27, his first breeze after the Belmont, he realized that the colt was ready for more big tests. “We all know he is a little lazy by himself, but the way he breezed was impressive,” Gargan said. “We'll see. I've always been confident in him. I've never ducked anybody. I've never gone anywhere. I want everyone to show up for that. I want them all there.” Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas–who will turn 89 on closing day–has the Travers on his schedule for Seize the Grey. He will prep in either the Haskell or the GII Jim Dandy on July 27 and Lukas said the colt is showing him he is ready for the next section of the season. “He's doing absolutely terrific,” Lukas said. “He's one of those horses that rebounds from his races beautifully. He jumps right back into the program. And because of some of the breeding farms, he just had a complete physical and passed it with A-plus marks. He should have a really strong fall. He really should. He's in a position to step up. Being an Arrogate, I've found that the Arrogates are kind of late developers. They seem to get better as they get a little bit older.” Lukas has been touting his 2-year-olds this year and nine of the 23 horses he brought to Saratoga from Kentucky are juveniles. His first 2-year-old runner will be BC Stable's Innovater (Authentic) Saturday in the seventh, a maiden special weight race. One of his 2-year-old runners last summer was Seize the Grey. In 1984, Lukas made his first appearance at Saratoga and won the Alabama with Life's Magic and the GI Spinaway Stakes with Tiltalating. He competed every year through 2019 at the Spa, but skipped 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic and a downturn in the quality of is stable. He returned two years ago with some new owners and more talent. According to Equibase, he has won 264 races. Twenty seven of his 67 graded stakes wins have been Grade I. “I find this meet a little bit more refreshing,” he said. “I come up here and I've got them all right there in front of me. The last few years, we tried to keep it under 35 or so and I find it kind of refreshing. I enjoy the Oklahoma track and the long trip from my barn down to the main track and so forth, riding with those babies. “The thing I think that stimulates you up here is you bring your 2-year-olds up that you're high on. We didn't bring every 2-year-old, but we brought the ones we think are what I call Saratoga-worthy. That in itself stimulates you to get up and get going and get out there every day. I don't want to say it's a working vacation, because it's not that. My wife and I don't go fishing on Lake George or waterskiing or to a ballet or anything. We just train horses, but it still seems to be a little bit refreshing.” Fitch, the co-owner of King's Tavern, said this has already been a weird summer with a hectic week, followed by three quiet weeks before racing resumes. Fitch said he is excited to get rolling again and embrace the season. “I'm not a big horse guy. I love and appreciate what the track is,” he said. “I'm not a gambler, but I enjoy it for the other reasons, just what it brings to our economy, what it represents to our community. It's a special place.” The post ‘It’s a Special Place’: Racing Returns to Saratoga Thursday appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 7. A total of 240 selected yearlings have been catalogued for the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, with the 103rd edition of the boutique auction scheduled for Aug. 5 and 6 in Saratoga Springs, New York. Sessions will begin each evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion. “Our consignors have supported Saratoga with an outstanding group of yearlings once again this year,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The sire power on offer is strong and diverse, and the depth of pedigree as good as we have had in recent memory. We have siblings to 57 graded stakes winners catalogued, several of which are Grade I.” Recent sales graduates include five Grade I-winning colts in Kingsbarns (2024 Stephen Foster S.); National Treasure (2023 Preakness S., 2024 Pegasus World Cup, and Metropolitan H.); Prince of Monaco (2023 Del Mar Futurity); Seize the Grey (2024 Preakness S.); and Sierra Leone (2024 Blue Grass S.). The sale also has the distinction of producing the two most recent Preakness S. winners in Seize the Grey and National Treasure. “Saratoga offers the highest concentration of quality of any yearling sale in the world,” said Browning. “From catalogues of just 200 or more yearlings, Saratoga has produced five of the sport's most exciting stallion prospects in Kingsbarns, National Treasure, Prince of Monaco, Seize the Grey, and Sierra Leone, as well as back-to-back Preakness winners.” The entire catalogue can be viewed here. 8. Ryan Moore has been booked for the ride on the G1 Coronation Stakes and G1 Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Porta Fortuna (Ire) (Caravaggio) in Friday's G1 Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, for which seven fillies and mares were confirmed on Wednesday morning. With no Ballydoyle representative in the line-up, Moore is free to link up with the Donnacha O'Brien-trained filly, racing for the Medallion-Weston-Fowler-Reeves partnership, with Oisin Murphy who steered her to success in the Cheveley Park back on David Howden's G2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes winner Running Lion (GB) (Roaring Lion) for the Gosdens. Ireland is well-represented in the mile feature, with the Mutual Admiration Society Partnership's Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up A Lilac Rolla (Ire) (Harry Angel {Ire}) hailing from the Paddy Twomey stable and Scott Heider's G1 Matron Stakes runner-up Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) flying the Joseph O'Brien stable flag. Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's dual listed winner Jabaara (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) from the Roger Varian yard, Amo Racing's Adrian Murray-trained Magical Sunset (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and Dash Grange Stud's David Menuisier-trained Sirona (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) complete the field. 9. What Bendigo Races Where Bendigo Jockey Club – Heinz St, White Hills VIC 3550 When Thursday, July 11, 2024 First Race 12pm AEST Visit Dabble Horse racing in Victoria heads to the Bendigo Jockey Club on Thursday afternoon for a stacked 10-race meeting. With persistent rain in Victoria to begin the week, it is no surprise to see the track come up as a Heavy 9. The rail will stick to its true position, with the action from the ‘Nursery of Champions’ set to commence at 12pm AEST. Best Bet at Bendigo: Struck Gold Struck Gold was a dominant victor at Sale on June 11 when stalking the speed and putting the race away in fine style on a Heavy 8 surface. That was over 1212m, and as he steps back up to 1300m, the four-year-old looks poised to string together consecutive victories for the first time in his career. The son of Castledale will need a touch of luck from barrier 13, but if Ethan Brown can find some cover within the first 200m, Struck Gold should prove too strong late. Best Bet Race 9 – #4 Struck Gold (13) 4yo Gelding | T: Anthony & Sam Freedman | J: Ethan Brown (61kg) +240 with Picklebet Next Best at Bendigo: White Bear White Bear is seven weeks between runs and is sure to appreciate the slight drop back in grade to a midweek BM64. The Mike Moroney-trained gelding has not been beaten far in his last four starts in Saturday metro grade, and they’ve all turned out to be strong form races. The last time he was in BM64 company, the four-year-old disposed of his rivals by five lengths at Benalla in a dominant all-the-way victory. Next Best Race 10 – #6 White Bear (1) 4yo Gelding | T: Mike Moroney | J: Zac Spain (61kg) +210 with Dabble Best Value at Bendigo: Savage Love Based on her last-start third at the Bendigo 1600m, Savage Love looks poised to run a big race third-up at the same course and distance. The five-year-old made up a stack of ground in the home straight after being slow away from the barriers, missing by less than a length. If Craig Newitt can dig her out of the gates and have the Tarzino mare settled midfield, it is just a question of whether she can handle the slop. 10. What Hawkesbury Races Where Hawkesbury Race Club – 1 Racecourse Rd, Clarendon NSW 2756 When Thursday, July 11, 2024 First Race 12:20pm AEST Visit Dabble NSW racing heads to Greater Western Sydney on Thursday afternoon, with Hawkesbury Race Club set to host a bumper eight-part program. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and although the track is rated a Heavy 9 at the time of acceptances, the sunny skies predicted in the lead-up should allow the surface to dry out for race-day. Punters can expect a Soft track as the opening event gets underway at 12:20pm local time. Best Bet at Hawkesbury: Captain Eagle Captain Eagle produced a promising runner-up performance on debut at Kembla Grange on June 20. The son of Per Incanto got the perfect run in transit, stalking Madam Rupee every step of the way, getting within a half-length but unable to get over the top in the final furlong. The race-day experience should be a major benefit heading into this second-up assignment, and with Zac Lloyd taking the reins as he steps up to 1300m, watch for Captain Eagle to make strong inroads down the centre of the course when the whips are cracking. Best Bet Race 1 – #1 Captain Eagle (7) 3yo Gelding | T: Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou | J: Zac Lloyd (59kg) +200 with Neds Next Best at Hawkesbury: Barazin Barazin should’ve won his second Australian start at Wyong on June 27, with the French import held up behind the leading pair for the entire straight. Apprentice Benjamin Osmond simply had nowhere to go aboard the son of Siyouni, with the four-year-old given a glorified barrier trial as he went through the wire under his own steam. The 2000m should be ideal third-up into the campaign, and although this guy may need more luck drawn out in barrier nine, trust Jason Collett to slot in for cover before mounting a late challenge down the centre of the track. Next Best Race 3 – #1 Barazin (9) 4yo Gelding | T: Kris Lees | J: Jason Collett (59kg) +600 with Unibet Best Value at Hawkesbury: Lady Extreme While Lady Extreme was disappointing first-up at Kembla Grange on June 20, however, punters should be willing to forgive the effort. The Blake Ryan-trained mare got too far back in an on-speed-dominated race, still managing to close within 2.6 lengths of Ballet D’Esprit. Barrier 13 means Jay Ford may need to retreat to the rear of the field again, but with a strong tempo, and a fair surface on offer with the rail in the true position, Lady Extreme should get every chance to make amends second-up. 11. A lucrative target is now in the crosshairs for Hamilton trainer David Greene with his polytrack specialist Branciforti (NZ) following her win in the D & A Diesel 1300 at Cambridge’s Synthetic meeting on Wednesday. The daughter of Belardo was fresh-up in the midweek meeting and was given the perfect trip in the trail by jockey Sam Spratt, before finding clear running room down the straight where she quickly captured the lead and ran out a 1-1/2 length victor. “She did the job pretty well in a smart field today, it was very encouraging,” Greene said. “I thought it (1300m) might be a bit sharp for her, but being in a fresh state and drawn one she got a beautiful trip. It is the sharpest she has probably been today, she is getting a bit stronger now. “It becomes a bit tricky placing those (higher rated) horses, they don’t have a lot of options on the synthetic after 65 grade. She has got a very good record on there and it was another very good win today.” The Sir Peter Vela bred and owned four-year-old has won three of her seven starts on the synthetic and is now in line to head south to Awapuni next month to contest the $100,000 1300m special conditions race on the synthetic. “I need to speak with Garry Cossey (Pencarrow Stud racing manager), but I think the 1300m race at Awapuni might be an option for her,” Greene said. “She has won three races on the synthetic now and that is what those races are there for, so it would be a nice option for her.” Greene said the $100,000 synthetic races are a great incentive over the winter months. “You keep these type of horses up at this time of year purely for the synthetic,” he said. “She doesn’t really handle the heavy going so it is nice to have a carrot there to be able to aim for. “It (synthetic track) is definitely a horses for courses track, but if they like it then they seem to be able to bounce through there pretty well. If they like it, you want to get them over there as much as possible.” View the full article
  12. Frank Ritchie was thrilled to collect a winning double on the Cambridge Synthetic on Wednesday, mostly due to whom he was able to share the success with. Stunning Maire (Holler) was the first to salute for Ritchie, contesting the Mawhiti Farm 1550 after a luckless run down the straight at Ruakaka when finishing seventh. Returning to her home course, the five-year-old mare was allowed to find cover and settle back in midfield from a wide draw (10) and when it looked as though she might face the same fate, blocked at the top of the straight, jockey Kelly Myers took luck out of the equation when taking a gap and driving her to the line by a half-length to Hammer Time (NZ) (Vadamos). Ritchie was pleased with the performance, while indicating a step-up in distance is likely for the daughter of Holler. “I believe she is a 2000m horse at her peak, but she flies the gate and over races with clear air,” he said. “In more recent times she’s backed off that a bit, and as soon as she can get cover she seems to settle. She got up and won today, but as she goes up a grade, she’ll need to go a bit further. “If she continues to cool it in the early part of the race, I think she can keep improving up another level or two. “I’ll see how she recovers and then look at more opportunities, she’s okay in slightly off-ground but heavy is no good to her so we’ll just look for the right race.” Ritchie went to $40,000 to secure Stunning Maire as yearling at the 2020 Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne, and the mare has earned just shy of $60,000 with three wins for her trainer alongside many of his long-term clients. “She was a beautiful animal and really took my eye,” he said. “Her sire at that stage wasn’t too popular I suppose, but she had a great bottom line and looked magnificent, very athletic and a great walk. “We’ve had a lot of fun with her and the owners in her have been with me since I was about 20 years old, I’ve had their horses ever since. “It’s great, it gives you more joy as they have been good friends for a long time.” Another great supporter of Ritchie’s owns Lemon Curd (NZ) (Per Incanto), who backed up her stablemate’s performance in the following event winning the Colin Bowden Fencing 1300. Having her fifth career start, the daughter of Per Incanto had the benefit of Triston Moodley’s three-kilogram claim and settled three-back off the rail in running. Pacemaker Ready Eddie Go (NZ) (Perfectly Ready) made her work for the win in the home straight, but the filly was too tough and prevailed by a short neck across the line. “I was very happy with her going into the race, her work had been superb,” Ritchie said. “Ironically with her, she’s usually asleep before her races but today she was quite antsy and hot, if I was a punter I’d have backed off a little bit because that’s pretty unlike her, but she got the job done. “Triston said he still had plenty of horse underneath him at the line, so that encourages me to look for more ground with her. “There’s another couple of wins in her I think, going up a grade she’s another looking for more ground and needs a reasonable track so we might just take it easy until the spring comes.” Lemon Curd was bred by her owner Josiah Ma, who purchased her five-win dam Miss Caruso (NZ) via gavelhouse.com in 2019. The mare by Pins won five races and has produced four winning foals. “I’ve had this client from Hong Kong for a long time, going back probably 30 years now and he’s been great. He has lots of horses in Australia and always sends me a couple,” Ritchie said. The filly’s unraced juvenile half-sister by Swiss Ace, Dink (NZ), is with the Ritchie stable and has won and placed in a pair of two-year-old trials. View the full article
  13. Local trainer Jo Rathbone will be represented by two of her well-performed gallopers in Billy Boy (So You Think) and Mr Twinkletoes (NZ) (Zacinto) at Wanganui’s Thursday meeting. A regular front-runner, Billy Boy returned to the winner’s circle after setting his own terms in the Amateur event at Te Aroha last month, and he will step up in grade in the Hilal @ Grangewilliam Stud 2040. “He just likes to roll along in front at a nice pace, Amber (Riddell, amateur jockey) seems to get along with him and rode him really well there,” Rathbone said. “He’s obviously up in grade tomorrow, but he always tries hard.” A former top jumps jockey, Rathbone has sights on a career over fences for the capable stayer and has noted next month’s Grand National week in Christchurch as a possible starting point for his new career. “I’m hoping to have a bit of a team to go down south and he’s definitely one who may head down,” she said. “He went last year and ran a couple of placings on the flat, but he also has his jumping ticket so I will decide over the next couple of weeks whether he potentially has his first jumping race down there. He jumps pretty nicely.” Lightly-raced four-year-old Mr Twinkletoes returned to the trials after his second-up fourth at New Plymouth in early June, preparing him for the Carpet Maintenance & Cleaning 1600. “We went back to the trials as there just wasn’t really a suitable race for him, at times there seems to be a whole lot of options at once then not many,” Rathbone said. “He’s been to Wellington a couple of times and not gone particularly well there, so when you have a horse like him who doesn’t seem to go well at a certain place, you’re a bit stuck for options. “It’ll be the same with him as Billy Boy, we’ll see how he goes tomorrow and decide whether he goes down to Christchurch for some flat races too. “Jumping wouldn’t be in his near future, but all of my horses do a bit of schooling in their work so potentially one day. It all depends on the horse really.” Top apprentice Lily Sutherland will fulfil the rides on both horses, as well as having her third start aboard Nigelnomates (NZ) (Preferment), who despite strongly over racing has performed well in both of his appearances to date. “He’s not the easiest to ride, he can go pretty hard early then decide that he’s maybe had enough and make Lily work quite hard,” Rathbone said. “He does have the ability, it’s just getting him into putting his mind on the job and he can be a bit like that in his track work as well.” The son of Preferment has drawn an outside barrier in the capacity field of 12 for the Manawatu Sound Services MDN (1600m). “I think she’ll (Sutherland) just have to play it by air with the draw, he really does his own thing and might either be fierce or miss the start, as he has done in the past,” Rathbone said. “It is a tricky draw especially from the mile start, but I’m sure Lily will have it sorted. “He’s come through his couple of runs well and he shouldn’t be far away I wouldn’t have thought.” Rathbone will also be represented Koda (NZ) (Belardo) in the Wanganui Insurance Brokers MDN 3YO (1200m) and Julianus in the Wanganui-Taranaki Racehorse Owners Association MDN (1340m), with the latter showing good improvement off a spell first-up at Otaki. “I thought it was quite a nice run first-up and he doesn’t seem to mind a wet track,” Rathbone said. “I can’t see it improving much from a heavy 10 even though we’re having good days, at my place it’s been heavy frosts so that doesn’t allow the track to do much drying. He should handle those conditions though.” View the full article
  14. Cimarron (NZ) has made a smooth transition to middle-distance racing and he looks well-placed to further his record at Ruakaka on Saturday. The son of Charm Spirit’s lead-up form on the track has been hard to fault and trainer-owner Jenna Mahoney has every reason to expect more of the same from the five-year-old in the ITM/GIB Whangarei Gold Cup Stayer’s Final (2100m). Cimarron has a course and distance victory and two minor placings in his four starts beyond a mile and with Warren Kennedy again booked for the ride they again make an appealing combination. “He’s pretty consistent and since we’ve shifted him up over ground he’s getting even better,” Mahoney said. “He was good last time out and he loves the surface at Ruakaka so we’re making the most if it with him.” Cimarron finished runner-up in a Rating 75 contest in his most recent visit to Ruakaka a fortnight ago and has done well in the interim. “He’s only a three-win horse in an open race, but he gets in nicely and Warren is keen to stay with him so I’m happy about that, he rides him really well,” Mahoney said. “I bought him as a yearling and he can have his moments, but generally he’s pretty easy going.” Cimarron was bought out of Windsor Park Stud’s Karaka draft for $50,000 and is a son of the stakes placed Redoute’s Choice mare Betsy. Her dam Quays (Royal Academy) won the Gr.2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and placed at the top level in the Australian Oaks (2400m), Queensland Oaks (2400m) and the Arrowfield Stud Stakes (2000m). Cimarron’s stablemate and Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1200m) contender Fernandez (NZ) has also been in good recent touch at Ruakaka with a runner-up finish two runs back before the Per Incanto mare ran fourth after an interrupted passage. “She is a really consistent horse and is rarely out of the money,” Mahoney said. “She will like the good track up there and I’ve been happy with the last couple of runs. The last race didn’t quite go to plan and she got a bit far back and hopefully she can sit a bit handier.” The other member of Mahoney’s team is Love Affirmations (NZ) who will run in the Northland Business Systems Handicap (1200m). The El Roca gelding was a comfortable winner on the course two runs back and then tailed the field home, but Mahoney is happy to forget that result. “The race just didn’t suit him. He drew the outside gate and Warren (Kennedy) opted to pull back and then they slowed the pace down and sprinted,” she said. “He got left a bit flat on the corner, but he pulled up great and we’ll try and ride him handier this time. He’s better suited that way, it was just the circumstances last time, so we’ll ignore that and move on.” View the full article
  15. Cambridge trainer Shelley Hale will head north to Ruakaka on Saturday to try and plunder some of the lucrative prizemoney on offer in the Winter Championship Finals. Leading her charge will be in-form mare Blue Sky At Night (NZ) (Shamexpress) who will attempt to claim the lion’s share of the $60,000 purse on offer in the ITM/GIB Whangarei Gold Cup Stayers’ Final (2100m). The six-year-old daughter of Shamexpress won her first two races this preparation before finishing runner-up behind Khan Hunter (NZ) (Mongolian Khan) in the Kiwifruit Cup (2100m) at Tauranga last month. Hale has been pleased with her progress and is looking forward to testing her on better footing at Ruakaka, which was rated a Soft5 on Wednesday morning. “She seems in pretty good order,” Hale said. “She is very bright and well, and a bit feisty. She is going very well and it will be interesting transitioning from Heavy tracks to a Good track up there by the look of things. I think over ground she is still well suited.” Hale said Blue Sky At Night will likely head for a spell following her weekend test and will be prepared for some stakes targets later this year. “We thought that we would head towards this series, and she will probably have a short spell after this and we will get her ready for something in late spring, early summer,” Hale said. “I think she is going well enough at the moment to look at something like the Counties Cup (Gr.3, 2100m) and see how we go from there.” Hale will also head north on Saturday with well-related three-year-old Talentoso (NZ), a Tarzino gelding out of a half-sister to multiple Group One winner and now sire Turn Me Loose, who will contest the $60,000 ITM/GIB Progressive Winter Championship Final (1600m). “He has got a little bit of pedigree going for him,” Hale said. “He is doing a nice enough job, he didn’t have a lot of luck early on. He is going to be a better horse with another six months on him, he is still a little bit weak.” Talentoso won two starts back before he was freshened and given one lead-in run last week ahead of this weekend’s lucrative target. “We gave him a week in the paddock after his win (two starts back) and gave him the run over 1400m last Saturday just to clean the pipes to be ready for this Saturday,” Hale said. “There is this nice prizemoney on offer and for a long time we have all grizzled about not enough prizemoney, so we thought we would have a look at this. “He will probably have a month out after this and then we will get him a going a bit later in the spring too.” View the full article

Muswellbrook Best Bet: Bullfighter After two eye-catching barrier trials, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Bullfighter makes his debut. The son of Capitalist secured victory in his most recent piece of work at Randwick on June 14, making every post a winner to score by two lengths. Jean Van Overmeire should be able to dictate terms from barrier two, and provided Bullfighter can steal a cheap sectional in the middle stages, this guy will prove hard to chase down. She finished her last campaign with an impressive runner-up performance behind Genzano at Scone on October 16, careering down the centre of the course to get within 3.5 lengths. She was only asked for a minor effort in a recent jump-out, and although she may lack race-day fitness compared to some key rivals, Lady Ichikawa has the class to account for this lot and break her maiden status. Michael Dee was booked for just the second time on the son of Time For War, heading back toward the rear of the field; although, ultimately drawing the favourable grandstand side of the course. It proved to be a winning move from the star jockey, with plenty of speed taking It’sourtime into the race. He was then able to show his electric turn-of-foot after peeling off the backs of some tiring on-speed gallopers. Runner-up Umgawa ($34) had shown some indifferent form, but was able to find second place, while the trifecta spot went the way of Chassis ($21) who also seemed to relish the hot tempo engaged. 2022: Sirius Suspect proves too slick It was as simple as jump, lead and win in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap for track specialist Sirius Suspect. The Saab Hasan-trained eight-year-old went into the 1200m sprint as a well-supported second favourite as he searched for a fifth win down the Flemington straight. After jumping cleanly from barrier six under Ethan Brown, the son of Wanted controlled the race from the front and gave a terrific kick when asked for a supreme effort, getting away from Shooting For Gold and setting an unassailable margin for Stageman and King Of Sparta to reel in. 2021: The Astrologist sends Group 1 statement The Astrologist managed to take out the Aurie’s Star Handicap at Flemington, claiming his first group success while adding to an impressive form-line as the Spring Carnival approaches. The five-year-old son of Zoustar brought up his third win from his past four starts when holding out Romancer and Too Good Too Hard in the concluding stages of the Group 3 race at Flemington. The horse showed plenty of group 1 potential, after being left vulnerable late on in the Aurie’s Star. The in-form runner hit the lead with 400m to go and managed to keep his rivals at bay. 2020: Ollie salutes again in Aurie’s Star Handicap Champion jockey Damien Oliver has continued his recent domination of the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Stakes, making it four wins in the past seven years and his fifth in total on Home Of The Brave. Godolphin’s Melbourne stable foreman Sean Keogh said Oliver’s quick thinking at the start of the 1200m race secured the win as he had to overcome adversity after receiving a bump from Great Again, who was drawn to his outside. Oliver was then able to stalk Great Again and run him down in the closing stages. Oliver said his mount was sandwiched in the incident but added the horse didn’t jump well anyway and felt he was not overly disadvantaged. Home Of The Brave ($5) defeated Great Again ($4.40 fav) by three-quarters of a length with Game Keeper ($8.50) a long neck away third. 19. Billy Boy will compete at Wanganui on Thursday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images) Local trainer Jo Rathbone will be represented by two of her well-performed gallopers in Billy Boy and Mr Twinkletoes at Wanganui’s Thursday meeting. A regular front-runner, Billy Boy returned to the winner’s circle after setting his own terms in the Amateur event at Te Aroha last month, and he will step up in grade. He jumps pretty nicely.” Lightly-raced four-year-old Mr Twinkletoes returned to the trials after his second-up fourth at New Plymouth in early June. It all depends on the horse really.” Top apprentice Lily Sutherland will fulfil the rides on both horses, as well as having her third start aboard Nigelnomates, who despite strongly over racing has performed well in both of his appearances to date. “He’s come through his couple of runs well and he shouldn’t be far away I wouldn’t have thought.” Rathbone will also be represented Koda and Julianus, with the latter showing good improvement off a spell first-up at Otaki. “I thought it was quite a nice run first-up and he doesn’t seem to mind a wet track,” Rathbone said. “I can’t see it improving much from a heavy 10 even though we’re having good days, at my place it’s been heavy frosts so that doesn’t allow the track to do much drying. He should handle those conditions though.” Horse racing news View the full article

  21. What Happy Valley Races Where Happy Valley Racecourse – Wong Nai Chung Rd, Happy Valley, Hong Kong When Wednesday, July 10, 2024 First Race 6:35pm HKT (8:35pm AEST) Visit Dabble The final Happy Valley meeting of the Hong Kong racing season is lined up for Wednesday evening, with a competitive nine-part program set for decision. The rail is in the B position throughout the night, and with no significant rain fall expected to hit the course proper, punters can expect a Good 4 surface. All the action under lights is scheduled to get underway at 6:35pm local time. Best Bet at Happy Valley: Supreme Agility Supreme Agility appears set to peak fourth-up into the campaign after a barnstorming effort at this track on June 26. The four-year-old was last turning for home on that occasion, making strong inroads but running out of time to get within two lengths of Chain Of Gold. The extra 150m in this Class 3 contest should be ideal, and with Hong Kong’s leading hoop Zac Purton in the saddle, Supreme Agility will prove hard to hold out as he attempts to break his maiden status. Best Bet Race 9 – #3 Supreme Agility (5) 4yo Gelding | T: Pierre Ng | J: Zac Purton (60kg) Bet with Bet365 Next Best at Happy Valley: Prince Of Porty Prince Of Porty looks perfectly placed to pick up his first win of the preparation. He comes through a strong form race at Sha Tin on June 2, only being headed by Lucy In The Sky and Steps Ahead, both of which appear to have plenty of upside. David Hall applies blinkers for the first time as Hugh Bowman hops in the saddle, and with barrier one to aid him on his journey, Prince Of Porty should be figuring in the finish. Next Best Race 7 – #3 Prince Of Porty (1) 5yo Gelding | T: David Hall | J: Hugh Bowman (60kg) Bet with Neds Best Value at Happy Valley: Brave Witness Although Brave Witness is winless heading into start 12, the four-year-old appears close to shirking the maiden tag. His last effort at this course and distance resulted in a runner-up finish behind Cordyceps One on May 1, being forced to sprint off a comically slow tempo. He’s only been defeated by a combined two lengths since that performance, and as Karis Teetan hops aboard from barrier one, punters can expect that trend to continue at an each-way price with online bookmakers. 23. by Christina Bossinakis & Stefanie Grimm Lexington, KY–The onset of the yearling season every summer can be a bit of a worrisome time for many. With the yearlings that have been so painstakingly selected by Fasig-Tipton's team for its first yearling sale of the season, it can often be a bit unnerving whether things will go off without a hitch or not. And at the conclusion of Tuesday's yearling session, it appeared that it had. “It was a fantastic start to the 2024 yearling sales season,” affirmed Fasig-Tipton President and CEO Boyd Browning, Jr. “I think that it clearly exceeded our expectations, even our hopes. Literally the first horse in the ring brought over $200,000 and kind of helps set the tone for the rest of the day.” Having already well established its Freshman Sires Showcase over the past several seasons, Browning was enthused about the results from Tuesday's early trade. “The Freshman Sire Showcase is part of what we do and we've become known for and it's a good way to introduce those stallions to the market,” he said. “[This year was] a fabulous group. It's about as good a group of freshman sire yearlings as we've seen in a long time. So will we have it again? Yeah, we'll have that back again next year.” At the conclusion of Tuesday's session, a total of 154 head sold for gross receipts of $17,319,000 with an average of $112,461 and a median of $90,000. In 2023, 210 yearlings sold (including three post sales) for a gross of $20,507,000. The average closed out at $98,724 and the median was $77,000. “It's not easy, don't get me wrong. The market is not all fantastic and everything sounds great,” he said. “But it was a healthy market. Any time you post increases over last year's results, it's positive. I'm not a huge statistics guy, but I think this sale gave everybody confidence heading into the remainder of the sales season.” The July Sale Next up: The Saratoga Sale Hear more about what to expect from @btbrowning. pic.twitter.com/Uamm3YRWiK — Fasig-Tipton (@FasigTiptonCo) July 9, 2024 Spendthrift's Ned Toffey was equally upbeat about the trade at Fasig-Tipton this week. The operation made a single purchase, acquiring Hip 81, a colt by Spendthrift sire Yaupon for $210,000. Spendthrift was also represented by several of its stallions, including the Uncle Mo-sired Yaupon, who led the day's freshman class with 11 selling for gross receipts of $1,792,000. “It's been very good overall,” said Toffey. “I think maybe there was some anxiety early, but if you stand out here by the walking ring, you see a ton of good-looking, quality horses go by and people respond well to that kind of horse. So we're very happy with today's results.” Commenting on the activity on the grounds in the days leading up to this year's July Sale, Browning said, “[Seeing] the traffic on the sales grounds when I pulled in Sunday morning, I thought, 'It's going to be ok.' Saturday morning was busy, which was important. Sunday morning I had to park a row behind where I normally do and it was refreshing. It felt good on the sales grounds from eight o'clock Saturday morning until almost five o'clock on Tuesday. And a lot of people are smiling.” And the depth of buyers, from pinhookers to end users, was also encouraging to Browning. Among buyers, Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Kenny McPeek, a regular on the July scene, purchased seven yearlings for a total of $1,120,000, including the highest priced, Hip 114, a colt by McKinzie for $275,000. MACLEAN'S MUSIC colt sells for $500,000 at The July Sale! #FasigJuly @HillnDaleFarm Congrats to buyer Resolute Bloodstock, consignor @Gainesway, agt, & breeder @bridlewoodocala!#FloridaBred @florida_horse @jstewartrr @rresoluteracing pic.twitter.com/IXapMMUYFF — Fasig-Tipton (@FasigTiptonCo) July 9, 2024 “We've spent 10 years trying to change the label from a pinhooker sale to a yearling sale,” he admitted. “And we saw significant participation from [Resolute Farm's] John Stewart again, and [trainer] Ken McPeek returned again. There were plenty of trainers on the sales grounds here too.” At the end of the day's trading, the RNA rate came in over 30%, rising from 31.9% in 2023 to 33.3% this year. “There was significant competition across the board for the vast number of horses. Same as always in July,” he said. “RNAs were a little higher than we would like because people have options. They have October and they have some other sales they can attend or save them for the 2-year-old marketplace. So it's always a little higher in that regard.” He explained, “Sometimes it's a hard sell in many regards because it's a physical sale. You have to try and make sure that you get the right type of horses. We live in a world where there is a lot of physical scrutiny. When you look at a horse in March, April or early May, you have no idea how they will vet. Some of them improved and unfortunately, some of them don't mature or go the wrong way. I am pleased overall with our inspection team because they put together a good group of horses from a physical standpoint. Can we do better? Yes, we always try to do better. But that's a little bit easier said than done. But we'll try to tighten the physicals again next year.” At the end of the day, Browning was extremely encouraged by what he saw during July's action, and was eager to see what was to come next in upstate New York next month. “I can't wait until Saratoga,” he said. “I cannot wait until Monday and Tuesday night because we have a really great catalogue. We had a good catalogue here and we saw the reaction to the physicals on the sales grounds over the last couple of days, particularly today. They don't have [prior] form but people want good horses and we've got good horses and we know there's plenty of competition for the good ones. So I am really, really pleased. Now we will start hustling for Saratoga buyers.” Resolute Back On Top With $500K Maclean's Music Colt When it comes to headlines at the nation's biggest sales, John Stewart's Resolute Stud certainly hasn't been far from them. Once again flexing his spending muscles during Tuesday's July Sale of selected yearlings, the buyer and his team extended to $500,000 for a colt by Maclean's Music. Offered as Hip 170, the chestnut was consigned by Gainesway, acting as agent for Bridlewood Farm. “When we saw him on the farm, we thought he was that kind of colt [that would bring this price],” said Gainesway's Brian Graves. “There are always a few anxious moments on the grounds, just with horses shipping in and getting acclimated but, in the end, we were expecting a price like that.” Stewart was equally enthused about his Florida-bred purchase, his first acquisition at the July Sale. “Everything I do is the first time,” he joked when asked about his initial foray at July. “I get to experience everything for the first time. It's a lot of fun.” “He was one of the top 5 colts we came here to buy.” Hear from @jstewartrr on his purchase of Hip 170 for $500,000. @rresoluteracing pic.twitter.com/8ueCJpHD3W — Fasig-Tipton (@FasigTiptonCo) July 9, 2024 He continued, “[Hip 170] was one of the top five colts we came here to buy. We are a little light right now since we just started our breeding operation this year. We just shipped our first 2-year-olds that we bought in September to the trainers. We're a little light on the colts with our yearling stock and so we're looking to stock up on colts right now.” The Mar. 11 foal is out of unraced Jotown (Speightstown), a $550,000 purchase by Bridlewood at Keeneland September in 2017. A daughter of MGSW Jojo Warrior (Pioneerof the Nile), the 8-year-old mare is out of Carson Jen (Carson City), who is responsible for Grade I scorer A Z Warrior and GSW & GISP E Z Warrior, in addition to MSW and GSP J Z Warrior. “The plan came together,” said Bridlewood General Manager George Isaacs. “I personally thought he was the type of colt that could potentially be a sales-topping type. Needless to say, it's an awesome result, we're tickled to death. We wanted to inject a bit of speed into the mare. Maclean's Music had Jackie's Warrior and Drain the Clock, we're big fans of his.” Jotown is also responsible for Spiralizer (Twirling Candy), a $250,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase that flourished into a $550,000 OBS March graduate earlier this year. Trained by Steve Asmussen for Wathnan Racing, the colt won first time out at Churchill Downs June 13. Outlining the team's process in tackling the yearling scene, Stewart said, “I focus on the pedigree side of things, and [advisors] Gavin [O'Connor] and Chelsey [Stone] focus more on the conformation side of things. We made a list of our top 50 horses and they came out and evaluated those horses and based on how all of that lines up, we decide what we're going to buy.” In total, Resolute secured nine lots at the July Sale Tuesday–six colts and three fillies–for gross expenditures of $1.6 million. The operation also purchased a pair of yearlings by Complexity for $250,000 (Hip 108, filly) and (Hip 202, colt) and took advantage of the Freshman Sire showcase with a colt by Maxfield (Hip 1) and paid $60,000 for a colt by Uncle Chuck (Hip 60). Jones.@rresoluteracing @jstewartrr pic.twitter.com/jqhxt73N0N — Fasig-Tipton (@FasigTiptonCo) July 9, 2024 “There are a lot of quality horses here,” he said, remarking on the freshman class on offer at Fasig Tuesday. “It makes you excited with what's coming up at this year's crop of horses that are coming to the market.” Regarding plans for his latest acquisitions, he added, “All of the ones we bought will go to the farm, we'll evaluate them and see where they are and when it's time to send them to pre-training, they will go to WinStar.” According to Stewart, Resolute currently has 43 horses in training and a total of 120 Thoroughbreds. The businessman indicated he has every intention of expanding those numbers further before the end of the season. “I'd like to have about 50-75 horses in training each year, and that's kind of what I'm building up this year,” he confirmed. “I made a significant investment in the industry last year and I am making another significant investment this year. I have 43 mares in foal this year, and I want that to be about 75-80. We've made a lot of progress this year, but we are still building.” Asked his impressions of his first July sale, he admitted, “I actually think it's probably a little unattended here. The prices to me are a little low, that's why I think we're getting some bargains here as opposed to having bought something later this summer at Saratoga. It made sense to buy here.”–@CbossTDN Justify Colt Brings $400K at Fasig July A colt by Justify continued the march of success for his Triple Crown-winning sire when bringing $400,000 from Mickey Gonzalez's Golden Star Farm–the co-second highest-priced yearling of the afternoon–at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale Tuesday. Consigned by Gainesway Farm, Hip 168 is out of Indygita (Indygo Shiner). This represents the extended family of MGSW and GISP Chapel of Dreams (Northern Dancer), a half-sister to leading sire Storm Cat. This term, his juveniles averaged $583,257 for 14 head sold for a median of $375,000. During Tuesday's session, Gainesway Farm sold 16 head for a gross of $3,132,000, including the session topper Hip 170, a colt by Maclean's Music that brought $500,000. The consignment had eight yearlings sell for over $200,000, including Hip 114, a colt by McKinzie for $275,000; Hip 107, a filly by Liam's Map for $225,000, Hip 271, a colt by Twirling Candy for $220,000 and Hip 231, a colt by City of Light that also brought $220,000.–@CbossTDN Uncle Mo Colt To Mayberry Farm April Mayberry struck mid-session for Hip 135, a colt by Uncle Mo who sold on a final bid of $400,000. Out of a graded stakes-placed full-sister to GII Oakhawn Handicap winner Inside Straight (Super Saver) and half-sister to GII Santa Ynez Stakes winner Dance Daily (Five Star Day), the colt was bred by Meg Dumaine, who purchased his dam for $150,000 at Keeneland November in 2017. “I love Uncle Mo,” said Mayberry. “He's beautiful and well balanced with a nice way of going. There really wasn't anything not to like. The Uncle Mo's are lovely. They're very smart, which I appreciate, and they have a good brain. I think you have to have a good brain on top of the ability. They're really nice to work with and usually very pretty.” We've got a new leader at #FasigJuly… A colt by UNCLE MO (hip 135) o/o a full sister to G2W Inside Straight sells for $400,000 at The July Sale! @coolmoreamerica Congrats to buyer Mayberry Farm, consignor Funny Farm KY, & breeder Meg Dumaine. pic.twitter.com/3v6PtrStZI — Fasig-Tipton (@FasigTiptonCo) July 9, 2024 The $400,000 watermark marked the highest sale of the session to that point and matched about what Mayberry was expecting to pay for the colt consigned by Dumaine's Funny Farm KY LLC. “[The price] was actually a maybe a little lower than expected. I think [the price] was right in the middle of what we thought. He'll go home [to Mayberry Farm] and just hang out for awhile. We'll give him some time and we'll break him in the fall like everyone else. He'll go to the races for us. He looks like an early horse for us but it'll depend on our client's program as it's not necessarily what they're looking for. The horse is going to tell us what they want to do but to me, he looks very early.” Yaupon, a son of Uncle Mo who brings his first yearlings to sale this year, had marked success Tuesday and Mayberry was one of many interested in his progeny as well as Uncle Mo as a sire of sires. “We liked the Yaupons quite a bit. In fact, we had a couple that we were interested in but for various reasons, they didn't work out. I think [Hip 135] was very typical of his sire. I like when you can see the sire in them.” —@SGrimmTDN Not This Time Has Top Filly Hip 199, a filly by Not This Time consigned by Blandford Stud (Padraig Campion) as agent, put up the highwater mark for the fillies later in the session at $320,000. Bred by Killora Stud and purchased by the Flying Dutchmen, the filly is out of the unraced Uncle Mo mare Mo Champagne who sold for $300,000 in foal to Justify at Keeneland January earlier this year after Killora had purchased her for just $90,000 at Keeneland January in 2017. The dam is a half to a pair of Grade I winners in millionaire Majestic Harbor (Rockport Harbor) and GI Arkansas Derby winner Danza (Street Boss). Mo Champagne is also a half to the dam of both GSW Totally Boss (Street Boss) and GSW Super Steed (Super Saver). —@SGrimmTDN A filly by NOT THIS TIME (hip 199) sells for $320,000 at The July Sale! Yearlings by Yaupon, who had a $450,000 weanling and a pair of $400,000 weanlings sell during Keeneland November last year, were highly sought after and brought top price, highlighted by Ballysax Bloodstock-consigned Hip 82 who sold for $285,000 to De Meric Sales and Hip 45 out of the Taylor Made Sales consignment who got a final bid of $275,000 from U.S. Racing Stables. Racing Stables and consignor @TaylorMadeSales, agt. pic.twitter.com/agExqtoo0f — Fasig-Tipton (@FasigTiptonCo) July 9, 2024 “Yaupon is very, very consistent,” said Spendthrift's Ned Toffey. “Since last November [when his first weanlings sold], we've seen that he's very consistent in the type that he throws. They look a lot like him. They're very athletic, have great bone and they look precocious–it's a very commercial type. It doesn't surprise me at all that they've sold the way they have. It's just a continuation of what we've already seen.” Spendthrift also enjoyed success Tuesday with By My Standards, who was represented by Hip 37, a colt consigned by Buckland Sales as agent for $200,000. “By My Standards didn't get the numbers and he started at a little lower price point. So while we didn't have the sample size, I know from talking with our breeders and getting out and seeing these offspring that we're really, really pleased with what we're seeing. It's not surprising at all that he can have some very nice individuals.” —@SGrimmTDN Maxfield Colt Reaps Pinhook Score for Gonzalez The action had barely kicked off Tuesday for the July Sale of Selected Yearlings when Hip 1, a colt by freshman sire Maxfield entered the ring. While not usually considered advantageous to be first out of the box, the son of Abundant Flurry (Midshipman) overcame those lingering biases when selling for $220,000 to Resolute Bloodstock LLC. Consigned by Legacy Bloodstock, the dark bay colt represented a career-best pinhooking score for Ocala-based horseman Jorge Gonzalez. “That colt looked like a 2-year-old–he was huge,” said Resolute's John Stewart. “He's a great physical, looks fantastic and he was highly rated in our system. We're really excited about him.” Making this week even more special, Gonzalez also became a first-time father with a son this past Saturday, capping what he termed a 'rollercoaster' week. “It's been a very special week,” he enthused. Of Tuesday's success, he added, “I didn't have much money and I knew I would have to work with whatever issues the horse had. He had a few little issues, which probably turned some people off, but I decided to take a chance. And it worked out. It's a lot of luck.” This in-demand colt by MAXFIELD (Hip 1) is first in the ring and the first to at The July Sale! Congrats to buyer Resolute Bloodstock and consignor @legacybloodstoc, agent. Out of a half-sister to Grade III winner Cigar Street (Street Sense), the yearling hails from the family of two-time Horse of the Year Cigar. “This colt was pretty correct, and I just liked the way he was moving,” recalled Gonzalez. “But I found myself going against a lot of people in buying this horse [in February]. As an individual, the horse was very nice, but the vetting wasn't great so I decided to take my chance, according to my pocket.” A Florida resident for over two decades, Gonzalez has served much of that time as an exercise rider at several high-profile Ocala training operations, including Crupi's New Castle Farm and Kinsman Farm. Gonzalez, who rents a few stalls at a facility in Ocala, currently has five horses making up his equine investment portfolio. “Right now, I am doing a little more pinhooking with yearlings,” he explained. “But I also have pinhooked 2-year-olds in training.” Offering a single yearling at this year's July Sale, Gonzalez confirmed that there will be a few more at this venue in October and at OBS this summer. Commenting on the allure of the colt's sire Maxfield, Gonzalez explained, “I liked [the sire] because he's a big and powerful horse. And people like the new sires.” When asked to sum up Tuesday's profitable afternoon, Gonzalez said, “This is all such a joy. I really love what I do. Things just took off recently and I am fortunate enough to sell the horse today. It's nice to be rewarded for taking the chance.”–@CbossTDN The post ‘A Fantastic Start’–Fasig-Tipton July Launches Yearling Season appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
