  1. Race favorite DETERMINISTIC (c, 3, Liam's Map–Giulio's Jewel, by Speightstown put in a late charge to nail Grand Mo the First (Uncle Mo) in the final strides and take the last turf edition of the Virginia Derby. Marred in traffic for much of the running, the GIII Gotham Stakes winner needed a way through and had to go wide to find it, closing down the center of the Colonial Downs turf course to just get up in time. With the ride, jockey Manny Franco picked up his sixth winner on the closing day card. Lifetime Record: GSW/GISP, 7-3-1-1. O-St. Elias Stable, Langone, Ken, Duncker, C. 2. Whisper Hill Farm's GRAND SONATA (h, 5, Medaglia d'Oro–A. P. Sonata, by A.P. Indy) saved ground when it mattered most, slipped through inside with less than a quarter mile to race and kept on nicely to cause a 15-1 upset in Saturday's GII Kentucky Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs to earn a berth in the field for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar Nov. 2. Drawn widest in a field scratched down to nine with the late withdrawal of Ballydoyle's Chief Little Rock (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the homebred slotted into about sixth position through the opening exchanges as defending champion Get Smokin (Get Stormy) was pressed along through fractions of :23.65 and :47.53 by California raider Balladeer (Distorted Humor). Quietly ridden down the back of the track as the pace up front remained nearly unsustainable, Grand Sonata was shuffled back to the latter third of the field with a half-mile to go and was guided down onto the fence by Tyler Gaffalione. Content to ride for luck passing the quarter pole, Grand Sonata got through a hole at the fence as the front-runners began to feel the pinch. The progressive Highway Robber (Hard Spun) emerged as a late threat, but he couldn't quite get there, as Grand Sonata reported home to the most valuable victory of his career. Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile) was given every chance by Flavien Prat, but could do no better than third, while favored Integration (Quality Road) struck some late trouble and finished off the board. 3. Tenma (f, 2, Nyquist–Amagansett, by Tapit) sat the trip and delivered at odds of 3-1 for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert in Saturday's GI Fanduel Racing Del Mar Debutante Stakes. Fifth early as they sped up front, Tenma hit the gas on the far turn and needed the length of the stretch to reel in Vodka With a Twist (Thousand Words) by a head. So There She Was (Munnings) was third. Tenma's heavily favored stablemate 'TDN Rising Star' Nooni (Win Win Win), unbeaten in two previous career starts, set a pressured pace and tired badly after checking in some traffic on the far turn. The result stood following a stewards' inquiry — not involving the winner — looking into the run around the far turn. Tenma becomes the seventh Grade I winner for Nyquist. 4. Impressive when running up a nearly double-digit winning margin en route to earning a 92 Beyer Speed Figure on debut at Gulfstream July 13, RATED BY MERIT (c, 2, Battalion Runner–Banner Waving, by Speightstown) jumped into stakes company Saturday and set a new stakes record in the Dr. Fager Stakes. The heavy 2-5 favorite, who went gate to write in that maiden romp, prompted the pace from the outside of Neoequos (Neolithic) but always loomed off the far turn. Unleashed past a :44.91 half mile, Rated by Merit rolled home to win going away. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0. 5. A multiple Grade 1 winner in his native South Africa, and the 2023 champion sprinter, Isivunguvungu (SAf) (What a Winter {SAf}) made his North American debut a winning one with a gutsy effort in the Da Hoss Stakes at Colonial Downs. Victorious in the G1 Mercury Sprint last July in Greyville, and also able to claim the G1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Stakes earlier that year in April at Turffontein, he also picked up a placing at the highest level via a blanket finish to run third in the G1 Pongracz Cape Flying Champions Stakes to start his 2023. Second this year Jan. 6 at Kenilworth for his final start at home for Peter Brian Muscutt, Isivunguvungu spent the last several months in some stage of the import process and then having to work back into form at Fair Hill once released to new trainer Graham Motion. All things considered, class was still class, and the betting public was not dissuaded by the lengthy gap in his resume, sending him off as the 2-1 favorite on the back of a five-strong string of bullets at that training center. Unconcerned by the early contact at the start, Isivunguvungu tracked the leading flight through :21.91 and :44.27 splits before cutting the corner to take the inland route home. Taking charge and holding firm, he hit the wire a neck best over MSW Nothing Better (Munnings). Maya Prince (Astern {Aus}) motored in to claim third. #5 Isivunguvungu makes his U.S. debut a winning on in the Da Hoss S. at @colonialdowns for trainer @GrahamMotion with @francojockey aboard! #TwinSpiresReplay pic.twitter.com/YDdzKGp2sI — TwinSpires Racing (@TwinSpires) September 7, 2024 “I can't say enough about what a good effort this was today,” Motion said. “He spent two months in quarantine at the beginning of the year. He is a very special horse. He has a big following in South Africa and I am so happy for those guys. Super happy for the Hollywood Syndicate. Manny [Franco] gave him a great ride. He's a lovely horse.” Motion added, “They've just lifted some of those [quarantine] restrictions [on South African horses]. I think we are going to see a lot more [of them], especially after the performance of this horse. South African horses by nature are very tough.” The Breeders' Cup is the end-goal for Isivunguvungu, but the conditioner admits he and the owners still need to plan what the route there will look like. “We have to decide if we are going to run him again; we have to decide if he is going to be able to get in the Breeders' Cup, which is what we'd really like to do. There's a fine line now with this guy. I think he's done enough fitness wise to get there without another race, so we'll just decide.” Isivunguvungu has a pair of winning sisters in Bat Out of Hell (Saf) (Querari {Ger}) and Thing Called Love (Saf) (Rafeef {Aus}), who thus far has been the dam's last produce after the mare recorded no offspring since the latter. 8. By Mike Love Ashburton trainer Ben Waldron takes a good sized team to the grass at Methven today, with his best chance being Penny Weight ($8.00FF) in Race 6, the Katie Cox Memorial (Fillies and Mares) Mobile Pace. The five-year-old Prodigal Seelster mare will be looking to go back-to-back after an emphatic victory at Ashburton a week ago. “That’s why we’ve persevered with her. We’ve always thought she could win a few but for one reason or another she hasn’t really fired a shot, but she showed what she’s capable of with her win last week. She’s actually quite a nice horse,” said Waldron. “I think if she backs up she’s a horse that I think can go on with it.” Craig Thornley will reunite with the mare. Walsron will take six in all to Mt Harding, and his chances before Penny Weight include two maidens – Destiny’s Dream ($6.00FF) in Race 1, the Mount Hutt Workouts Mobile Pace and Franco Chaplin ($4.20FF) in Race 3, the Ashburton MSA Racing Section pace, with both runners to be driven by John Morrison. “Destiny’s Dream has had a few goes but has been better lately. Has a good draw and should be a first four chance.” Waldron does however heed a warning to punters around the debutant Franco Chaplin. “He is a work in progress. Probably has more gear on him than a space shuttle, but we’ll get there. He’s got a big engine. But I’d warn punters to not go nuts on him just yet – he has a lot to learn.” At the backend of the meeting Waldron lines up Franco Humbie ($7.50FF) in Race 10,the Rainer Irrigation Handicap Pace and the popular Georgie Zukov ($5.00FF) in Race 12, the Matt Smith Construction Mobile Pace, both with John Morrison their pilot. “His (Franco Humbie) trials have been really good but it is his first time from a stand under race day conditions. I don’t think the field is beyond him, so if he does things right he won’t be far away.” “Georgie Zukov is the same – he has trialled well against some good opposition. He seems as ready as he can be but he can take a bit of racing to reach his best – but he is pretty ready to go.” Waldron also lines up trotter Moa Mojito ($41.00FF) in Race 5, the Ashburton Powdercoating and Sandblasting Trot with Craig Thornley to drive. “Her form doesn’t read that well but I thought she was a lot better last week. She wasn’t that far away and punched the wind first up. But I am happy with her.” Today’s meeting also carries a poignant significance as it is dedicated to the memory of Katie Cox, who passed away earlier this year. The event serves as a tribute to Cox’s contributions and enduring legacy within the racing community. Racing commences from 11:44am. View the full article
  9. Off as the 3-1 favorite in the first-ever Grade I event to be contested at Kentucky Downs, Gold Square LLC's HOWARD WOLOWITZ (c, 3, Munnings–Forget Me Not, by Uncle Mo) came with an irresistible run three or four off the inside at the eighth pole and turned back a late challenge from the well-backed Yellow Card (Lost Treasure {Ire}) to take out the $2-million Aristocrat Franklin-Simpson Stakes Saturday afternoon. Away alertly from his high draw, Howard Wolowitz was ridden positively by Irad Ortiz, Jr. and raced wide, but not far from pacesetting Joe Shiesty (Air Force Blue) into the straight. Asked for a sprint a quarter mile from home, he surged to the lead at the eighth pole, where he was joined by Yellow Card–a 15-1 chance on the morning line and away at 6-1–but he turned away that bid and skipped clear to score in the time of 1:14.20 for the 6 1/2 furlongs on the firm turf, just 0.01 off the course record. Howard Wolowitz becomes the sixth elite-level winner for Coolmore America's Munnings and he is the fourth Grade I winner out of a daughter of Uncle Mo. Sales history: $240,000 Ylg '22 KEEJAN. 13. In an uncertain world, he is the solid one, Mr reliable, all class, no issues, no weaknesses. Nurlan Bizakov's pride and joy Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who is so honest he even brought Roger Varian to tears at Deauville, is one of those perpetual group 1-winning stalwarts of the game that come along every so often. Sunday's G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp offers his sternest test to date, with the G1 Queen Anne Stakes and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois hero opposed by two elite 3-year-old sons of Dubawi (Ire) in TDN Rising Stars Notable Speech (GB) and Henry Longfellow (Ire), but no doubt he will give his all once more and they will have to be as courageous as they are top-class to master him. “The horse seems to be going from strength to strength and you have to look forward to competing in these exciting races and taking on some three-year-olds on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how we do,” Varian said. “This time last year it may have been hard to predict, but watching him winter and that performance in the spring, albeit in listed company at Doncaster at March, it just looked like he was starting to become the complete horse.” “I guess that's what we would say he is, he looks the complete horse now,” he added. “He's very mature, he's very strong mentally and has a good, tough attitude. He's also very adaptable, he handles different ground and it all seems to come the same to him, whatever the going description. He's just proving to be a very good horse and they are hard to come by. He's one of them, so we're going to enjoy it.” Testing ground means that both Godolphin's Notable Speech and Ballydoyle's Henry Longfellow are entering unknown territory here, although the latter was deadly on good-to-soft when outclassing his contemporaries in the G1 Vincent O'Brien National Stakes a year ago. Such ease underfoot is probably more of a concern to Charlie Appleby, given the lethal acceleration his stable star showed when dominating the G1 2,000 Guineas and G1 Sussex Stakes. “Notable Speech is in great order. The obvious unknown will be the going–they had a lot of rain in Paris on Thursday, but hopefully we can have a couple of drying days while they will be racing on a fresh strip of ground,” he said. “Charyn looks to be our main opposition but it's a strong field, as is always the case in these top races. This will be the first time he has encountered this type of ground, but we are hopeful he can handle it. It's always a bit of a guessing game until you've actually raced on it.” Interestingly, Henry Longfellow was the short-priced favourite at Goodwood with question marks over Notable Speech and that has flipped following his eclipse there. Hassled on the front end from the outset, the blueblood who had looked so classy when denied late by Rosallion (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}) in the G1 St James's Palace Stakes that saw Notable Speech's flop faded out at the business end but Aidan O'Brien is happy to draw a line through that. “We could not believe that happened,” the Ballydoyle maestro said. “It was our last thought–we couldn't see anyone beforehand to go with him on the front so it was mad, but that's just racing. We got it wrong. It just happened and he was there [in the speed duel] and couldn't get out of it. He had to keep going.” Key to this may be the tempo that the Andre Fabre-trained stalwart Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}) sets on the front end, with extra stamina for this mile potentially a prerequisite given the likely conditions. Also happy to bowl along is Bizakov's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau and G3 Prix Daphnis scorer Ramadan (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) and Patrick Sabban's G3 Prix Messidor winner Caramelito (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), so this shouldn't be the customary tactical affair associated with French racing. First Things First… Elsewhere on the ParisLongchamp card, the G3 Prix la Rochette serves as a prep for next month's G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere with the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure-winning TDN Rising Star Tiego The First (Fr) (Blue Point {Ire}) tackling Al Shaqab Racing, Jean-Claude Seroul and Gerard Augustin-Normand's G3 Prix Francois Boutin runner-up Houquetot (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Godolphin's unbeaten Listed Prix Nureyev winner Ombudsman (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) lines up in a fascinating renewal of the 10-furlong G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange, where Wathnan Racing's trio includes the G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up First Look (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and the unexposed and unbeaten Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Listed Prix Pelleas scorer Map Of Stars (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). 14. By J. Keith Desormeaux As owners and trainers, because of our day-to-day direct involvement with our horses, we have the most at stake, both personally and monetarily, in the success of racing in the State of Kentucky. Because of this, I, with the support of my clients and colleagues are strongly requesting an improvement to the raceday scratch procedure. As much as anyone, we understand the unpredictable nature of Thoroughbred soundness. It should be clearly understood that we are not seeking to end vet checks on race day, but we do vehemently ask for an arbitration process if a horse is determined (by one individual's observation) to be unfit to race. It is incomprehensible (and unfair to the regulatory/state vet), that he/she alone can wield this much power concerning raceday participation. Trainers, owners and attending vets spend their lives with these animals on a daily basis, nt only in an effort to get them to peak health, but to also be able to diagnose lameness and other potential issues. This is why the attending vet and trainer sign off (by regulatory mandate) on soundness before a horse is entered. The attending vet or practice must be respected and counseled if the state/regulatory vet deems it necessary to scratch a horse. Especially given that the state/reg vet has spent basically only a rushed five minutes examining a horse versus the days, weeks and months of observation and care under the attending vet and his or her trainer. Proposed Procedural Changes: Before a scratch can occur, the state or regulatory vet must consult said horse's personal vet in order to review its medical history which may include x-rays and any other vet care performed by the attending vet. It must be reiterated, that the attending vet's personal and professional knowledge of said horse is crucial to any final decision; If a scratch is still deemed necessary, a third-party vet must be consulted and a vote of these three vets take place in order to determine if scratch is necessary. This would now provide total agreement and buy-in from all related parties; The wording of what constitutes a raceday vet scratch must be clarified and clearly defined. In general, it is not the state/regulatory vet's job to determine if he/she thinks the horse is capable of running. They cannot merely have an opinion of a horse's health or ability to run. Their job is not to determine fitness, general health or general diagnostics. Their only job must be to determine if the horse is at risk of a catastrophic breakdown and nothing more. To solely have the ability to wield such power to scratch a horse without a well-substantiated reason or proof rather than a generic statement that “they just don't like the horse today” is not acceptable. We also know that this arbitration could be time consuming if multiple horses are required to be reviewed on race day. I would think that the tracks' potential loss of handle and the parties involved would happily be patient and back up post times if necessary. Or if a rash of potential vet scratches are becoming common, make a 2-3 o'clock post the norm. Thanks for your attention to this important matter. If enough voices are heard concerning this subject, a change for the better surely can be made. 16. Grass track racing resumes post a winter break, at Methven today. It’s a bumper 12 race programme starting at 11.44am. Trials on the grass last week conducted by the Mt Hutt Trotting Club are a good guide to what is usually a tricky day to find winners. Here’s commentator-Trackside presenter Marc Cookson’s best at Mt Harding. Race 1 Mt Hutt Workouts Mobile Pace 7 Verducci : Lightly raced over winter but when he did race it was in strong fields. Four of his 6 placings so far have been on grass. 4 Ultimate Seisation : Settled four pegs with Ricky May on at the Mt Hutt trials. Moved off at the 600 and challenged leader and looked the winner at the 150m, beaten by a fast finishing Franco Chaplin Race 2 Methven Seeds Trot 9 Muscle Dash : Clean beginning from wide barrier at Mt Hutt trials and settled three the markers, hitting the line within a length of the winner. Did plenty of work last time to the races behind a young trotter who has won again since. 4 Madam Patsy : Settled third in a three horse trial then put into proceedings last 600m doing nice work late to beat its race rival here, Monkeycmonkeydoo. Race 3 Ashburton MSA Racing Section Pace 5 Franco Chaplin : Eye catching finish taking the short way home at the Mt Hutt Trials. Good indication of a bold run on Sunday. Race 4 Peter Lagan Standardbreds Mobile Pace 1 Opo : Barrier 1 with Robbie Holmes driving over the Methven mile. Broke its maiden on grass and has placed here at Methven in the past. Gate speed could come from Flo Motion and Sports Babe. Race 5 Ashburton Powdercoating and Sandblasting Trot 3 Take After Me : Another bold showing at start 372 at Ashburton last week. Should be prominent again. 7 Brian Beatt : Going good, consistent races and last week was no different. Worth another each way play. Race 6 Katie Cox Memorial (Filles and Mares) Mobile Pace 9 Rakero Ice : Hard to look past the win at Rangiora going away from them. Start two and moves to the mobile. She should find the front at Methven where on speed could be the place to be on Sunday. Race 7 Betavet Junior Drivers Mobile Pace 9 Kaysans Rock : Only a half length from Piccadilly Pete at Addington when backed to favoritism fresh up. Junior drivers’ race and drawn wide, but on the bold fresh run and the trial for amongst some handy types I would be including him. Race 8 South Island Seeds Handicap Trot 7 MM Sunshine : She was beaten by a maiden who is heading for potential slot races and Derbys. Could find the front and when she finds the front she always remains there or thereabouts. Race 9 Mt Hutt Motels Pace 4 Santanna Mach : A former Wairarapa and Otaki Cup winner on grass. Start number 200 today and dropping out of last weeks 35-54 to a 35-41 this week. Race 10 Rainer Irrigation Handicap Pace 10 Times Are A Changin : A horse that has been hanging out for the return of the grass tracks. With success here at Methven always worthy of an each way play. Race 11 The Dubliner Trot 1 Torvi : Beat stablemate Crazy N Love who won a few days later at Rangiora. Meanwhile Torvi went to the Mt Hutt trials and sat second last on the pegs then moved into cover in the running line at the 800. Let down nicely in the straight fanning out wide to win by a neck. Signs pointing to a prominent resumption. Race 12 Matt Smith Construction Mobile Pace 9 Stephs Boy : Drops in grade and won the “Young At Heart” pacers mile here in November after being driven positively by Blair Orange. Best Bet: Rakero Ice(Race 6) Next Best: Franco Chaplin(Race 3) Value Bets: Muscle Dash(Race 2) Stephs Boy(Race 12) View the full article
  17. G1 Racing's Christmas Parade (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) earned her first stakes victory and group win in the G2 Shion Stakes on Saturday. The filly blitzed the 2000 metres in a new stakes record of 1:56.60. Sent off at 28-5, the Shizuya Kato runner stalked Isola Felice (Jpn) (Satono Crown {Jpn}) from second as that foe sped through splits of :22.90, :46.70, and 1:10.70. The final four furlongs were all under :12 seconds each, with the eventual winner asked for her best inside the final 600 metres. She surged to the lead in upper stretch and fended off the late charge of Mi Anhelo (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) by a neck. Favoured Bond Girl (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) also closed from near the rear of the field to take third, another 1 1/4 lengths behind. The top three finishers have all booked their spots in the G1 Shuka Sho on Oct. 13. Jockey Yukito Ishikawa told NetKeiba, “The track was in great condition, and I had a feeling it could produce a record time, but it still surprised me. She's still a bit immature mentally, but the stable has done a fantastic job fine-tuning her, and I think she has a bright future ahead.” A winner of a 2000-metre Nakayama newcomers affair in December, the dark bay doubled up over 2200 metres there in her 3-year-old bow in February. She was fourth in the G2 Flora Stakes on Apr. 21 and ninth trying dirt for the first time in the Listed Kano Oaks at Kawasaki on June 12, a surface her dam triumphed over four times. This was her first start back. Pedigree Notes She is the 10th stakes winner and seventh group winner for her Shadai-based sire who stood for ¥20,000,000 this season. Kitasan Black is the sire of worldwide star Equinox (Jpn), who entered stud this year, and fellow Group 1 winner Sol Oriens (Jpn). Her dam, the $285,000 Keeneland September yearling Miss Erika (Blame), was consigned by Elm Tree Farm for Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings before selling to Katsumi Yoshida in 2013. She would go on to win five times over turf and dirt in her adopted country in the colours of Masami Aramaki. The winner is the second foal out of a half-sister to GII Fountain Of Youth Stakes and GIII With Anticipation Stakes winner and sire Soldat (War Front). She is followed by a juvenile colt named Debug (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) and a yearling colt by Satono Aladdin (Jpn). 18. Catalina Cruiser (Union Rags–Sea Gull, by Mineshaft), a five-time Grade II winner at a variety of distances, will move from Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, to continue his stud career at Haras Porta Pia in Chile. The deal was brokered by Matt Bowling of Bowling Bloodstock and J.P. Sullivan of Sullivan Bloodstock. Winner of seven of his nine career starts for Hronis Racing and John Sadler, the 10-year-old is the sire of 53 individual winners to date and three stakes horses from his second crop, including GI Curlin Florida Derby runner-up Catalytic, a starter in this year's GI Kentucky Derby. 20. In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar. Trainer Danny Gargan launched the careers of GI Belmont Stakes winner Dornoch (Good Magic) as well as GIII Matt Winn Stakes winner Society Man (Good Magic) during the 2023 meeting at Saratoga. Both starters in this year's GI Kentucky Derby, neither won on debut. Dornoch finished a strong second behind fellow future Classic winner Seize the Grey (Arrogate) in his unveiling in the Saratoga slop while Society Man was a well-beaten seventh first time out behind subsequent five-time stakes winner Valentine Candy (Justify). After unleashing 2-year-old filly Complexion (Complexity) with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance during the Belmont at the Big A meeting earlier this spring (she followed with a seventh-place finish after losing her race in the starting gate in the Schuylerville Stakes on opening day), a trio from Gargan's juvenile class of 2024 stamped themselves as ones to watch despite not visiting the winner's circle at the Spa this summer. “Obviously, last year's crop is probably gonna be hard to beat with two Derby starters out of 16 babies,” Gargan said. “We've had a winner already with Complexion, who's really talented. We didn't have as many babies this year–we only had like a dozen–but we're really proud of the ones we have.” Danny Gargan celebrates Dornoch's win in the Belmont Stakes | Sarah Andrew By the same leading young sire as the aforementioned unplaced Kentucky Derby duo as well as the Gargan-trained 2022 GII Remsen Stakes winner Dubyuhnell, Snowyte (f, 2, Good Magic–Snow Fall, by War Front) crossed the wire a strong second after doing all of the heavy lifting first time out going seven furlongs at Saratoga Sept. 1. Well-backed at 5-2 after firing a four-furlong bullet in :47 4/5 (1/94) Aug. 25, Snowyte was sixth out of the stalls and ridden to the front by Luis Saez from her inside draw. She set a pressured pace through fractions of :22.50 and :45.14, kicked for home as the one to catch, and, after racing down most of the stretch on her left lead, was run down late to finish second by 2 1/2 lengths to second-time starter Quickick (McKinzie). Snowyte earned a 74 Beyer for the effort. QUICKICK, the 2YO daughter of @Gainesway stallion McKinzie, breaks her maiden in the seventh race with @DavisJockey aboard for trainer @TomAmossRacing. pic.twitter.com/lMyo94L11E — NYRA () (@TheNYRA) September 1, 2024 Snowyte, a $250,000 Keeneland September yearling, was produced by a two-time stakes winner and half-sister to MGSW Upperline (Maria's Mon). She is campaigned in partnership by Pine Racing Stables, Belmar Racing and Breeding, LLC and R. A. Hill Stable. Breeder Don Alberto Stable is also on the ownership line. “She's my favorite,” Gargan said. “I think she's gonna be a super-talented horse. It was one of those situations where it was seven-eighths and we never worked her past a half-mile. She didn't have that many breezes, but we went ahead and wanted to get her started to just get a race in her to get her going. She'll probably run back at Keeneland opening week. I think she can be any kind of horse in the future.” After working in company with Dornoch and not backing down one bit in a four-furlong breeze recorded in a visually impressive :47 1/5 (3/175) Aug. 8, there was plenty of buzz surrounding Rookie Card (c, 2, Adios Charlie–Glamalert, by Vindication) as he lined up as the 5-2 second-choice in the highly coveted Travers Day six-furlong maiden special weight. Hustled to the front by Dylan Davis after not getting off to the sharpest of beginnings from his two draw, Rookie Card was hounded from the outside by the slightly favored Todd Pletcher-trained first-time starter Tip Top Thomas (Volatile) through an opening quarter in a sharp :21.95. Tip Top Thomas turned up the heat on the far turn and reached even terms with Rookie Card as they approached the eighth pole. Rookie Card dug down gamely along the rail and wasn't going out without a fight, but just couldn't withstand a final surge from Tip Top Thomas, who got up to win by a head and earn a 'TDN Rising Star' badge in a blanket finish. It was another nose back to third-place finisher Keewaydin (Instagrand), who came storming home down the center with giant strides after tracking the top two throughout. Fourth-place finisher Sovereignty (Into Mischief) rallied from last of 10 to finish a better-than-it-looked fourth in a race completely dominated on the front end. The top three all earned matching 85 Beyer Speed Figures. TIP TOP THOMAS, the 2YO son of @Three_Chimneys stallion Volatile, breaks his maiden in the seventh race with @iradortiz up for trainer @PletcherRacing. pic.twitter.com/5GCePwCdfU — NYRA () (@TheNYRA) August 24, 2024 Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud and Centaur Farms, Inc., the son of Adios Charlie is out of a winning half-sister to GISW Swift Temper (Giant's Causeway). The $165,000 OBS June breezer (:21) carries the colors of R. A. Hill Stable and Gatsas Stables. “It's a big-time raceday,” Gargan said. “We knew we were gonna catch some good horses. He broke just a touch slow and rushed up. They went super fast and came back with a big number. If Todd's horse would've drawn the rail–the rail was dead that day–and we draw the outside and sit the trip instead of rushing, we win the race. It's just unfortunate. He's a really nice horse and we're looking forward to running him back. He's probably gonna run [at Aqueduct] on Sept. 21.” Rookie Card (inside) & Tip Top Thomas throw down in the loaded Travers Day maiden special weight | Sarah Andrew Dragoneer (c, 2, McKinzie–Altamura, by Artie Schiller) rallied smartly from last of 10 after an impossible journey on debut going 1 1/16 miles over the Saratoga lawn Aug. 17. The 13-1 chance hesitated a touch at the start and caboosed the field through fractions of :23.61 and :48.74 over the good going. He began to enter the picture while traveling nicely under a tight hold beneath Kendrick Carmouche heading into the far turn and saved ground along the hedge as they turned for home. He quietly made progress through all of the chaos in the stretch and came rocketing home while racing in tight quarters between horses to finish in a field-best :30.53 while crossing the line third, beaten 1 1/4 lengths behind Concord Green (War Front). CONCORD GREEN shocks the field with a 13-1 upset in the second race, guided by the unstoppable @DavisJockey for trainer Shug McGaughey! pic.twitter.com/qgnN1r4hcI — NYRA () (@TheNYRA) August 17, 2024 Dragoneer hails from the first crop of freshman sire McKinzie and was produced by three-time stakes winner Altamura. He brought $450,000 from Carl F. and Yurie Pascarella, R. A. Hill Stable and Belmar Racing and Breeding, LLC, after breezing in :9 4/5 at OBS March. He previously sold for $135,000 as a KEENOV weanling and RNA'd for $125,000 as a KEESEP yearling. “He just never had anywhere to get through,” Gargan said. “He's a really talented horse, we really like him. It just was a little unfortunate that he had no chance to slip through. He's a two-turn horse and he ran so well. He's gonna run back on the grass Sept. 28 at Aqueduct.” The 'Second Chances' Honor Roll is headed by Horse of the Year Cody's Wish (Curlin), fellow two-time Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) and GISWs A Mo Reay (Uncle Mo), Honor A. P. (Honor Code), Locked (Gun Runner), Paradise Woods (Union Rags) and Speaker's Corner (Street Sense). 21. It's the final day of the meet where the 'turf meets the surf' where trainer Bob Baffert will likely finish the afternoon with an unprecedented 18th winner of the GI Del Mar Futurity, the final major contest of the season before the track gets all decked out in purple for the arrival of the Breeders' Cup in early November. The Hall of Famer saddles three of Sunday's seven intended runners, each capable of walking away with the victory on their best. 'TDN Rising Star' Getaway Car (Curlin) is the most experienced of the trio with two starts to his credit, having wired a local five-furlong maiden by 3 1/4 lengths July 20 before validating 3-10 favoritism against just three rivals in the Aug. 11 GIII Best Pal Stakes. The barn's number one rider Juan Hernandez sticks with the $700,000 Keeneland September yearling over Gaming (Game Winner), who is drawn outside of his stablemate and may have the superior early speed which was on full display when donning cap and gown by a wide margin at first asking Aug. 11. The dark bay colt gets the services of the visiting Flavien Prat, hardly a downgrade. Mike Smith takes over from Martin Garcia aboard the outposted Citizen Bull (Into Mischief), a $675,000 purchase at Keeneland last fall whose debut 84 Beyer Speed Figure on Aug. 17 is just one point shy of the number recorded by Getaway Car in the Best Pal. If any of the Bafferts stub their toe, McKinzie Street (McKinzie) could pull a minor upset and give his young sire a second top-level winner in two weeks. The Tim Yakteen-trainee carried Kazushi Kimura to a front-running victory going 5 1/2 panels, defeating the Baffert-conditioned Emerald Bay (Nyquist), who saluted at 1-5 in his next start. The Baffert barn has one of the chief protagonists for the GIII Del Mar Juvenile Turf in the form of Mischief River (Into Mischief). A full-brother to Grade III-winning distaff sprinter Into Chocolate and to Grade III-placed dirt router Secret Keeper, the $160,000 KEESEP yearling turned $500,000 OBS April juvenile returned better than $16 when graduating first time out at Los Alamitos June 29 and gave a good account of himself when the distant runner-up in the Best Pal. Tiz Happy (Runhappy) was last of the four in the Best Pal, but prior to that posted a 71 Beyer when proving a game first-out winner going five grassy furlongs at Santa Anita June 13. The in-form Kyle Frey will be looking to end the meet on a high note while carrying the same Calumet Farm colors as he did aboard Mixto (Good Magic) in the GI Pacific Classic for Tiz Happy's trainer Chief Stipe O'Neill last weekend. Bred by Brent Harris and Beth Harris, the filly went for $600,000 at the OBS April Sale after she clocked :20 1/5 during the under tack show. The debut runner's dam is D'Fashion (D'wildcat), who out of her eight foals has five to race with as many winners, including MSW Strategic Dreams (Archarcharch). 23. Charlie Fellowes trainee Luther (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Give And Take {GB}, by Cityscape {GB}) followed up a debut success at Salisbury with a runner-up finish back there in last month's Listed Stonehenge Stakes and regained the winning thread with a dominant performance in Saturday's Listed Betfair Daily Tips On Betting.Betfair Ascendant Stakes at Haydock. Steadied to track the leaders in fifth and last off the bridle in the home straight, the 16-5 chance was shaken up to challenge entering the final furlong and lengthened clear in the closing stages to easily outpoint 40-1 outsider Qilin Queen (Ire) (Pinatubo {Ire}) by two lengths. 24. 25. The Montassib Partnership's selectively campaigned 6-year-old gelding Montassib (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}–Felwah {GB}, by Aqlaam {GB}) notched a first pattern-race triumph in June's G3 Chipchase Stakes and outstripped all prior form to claim a career high in a thrilling renewal of Saturday's G1 Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock. The 25-1 outsider found a modicum of cover after an alert getaway and occupied a slot in rear through the initial fractions of this straight six-furlong contest. Nudged closer once past halfway, he came under sterner urging when moving into contention approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to deny 'TDN Rising Star' Kind Of Blue (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}) by a head in a bobbing finish. Montassib's William Haggas-trained stablemate Unequal Love (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) kept on well to finish 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third.
