Albaugh Family Stables's Catching Freedom (Constitution), the GI Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher, is slated to enter Saturday's $2 million GI Preakness S. at Pimlico Race Course, trainer Brad Cox said Sunday morning via a 1/ST Racing press release. Cox's initial reaction was not to run the colt back in two weeks after the hard race the GII Louisiana Derby winner had under the Twin Spires, in which he finished less than two lengths behind victorious Mystik Dan (Goldencents). However, Catching Freedom has been training so well at Churchill Downs that Cox felt the 3-year-old deserved another chance at a Triple Crown race. Regular rider Flavien Prat will have the mount. “Obviously we like how he's doing,” Cox said. “It's just eight days after the Derby. It's very important to watch the horse. He has been galloping well. I'm happy with the way he's moving. Tomorrow (Monday) is entry day, and we are going to ship tomorrow. We need to get our ducks in a row, and we feel he's shown us enough. “It's not ideal to run back in two weeks at this level, but that's the way the schedule is. This race provides an opportunity to be very competitive in a Grade 1. We don't want to miss that opportunity as long as he's doing well. The Preakness is a very prestigious race. It's not only a Grade 1 but a classic.” Cox has participated in Old Hilltop's featured race only once before, finishing third with Owendale (Into Mischief) and fourth with Warrior's Charge (Munnings) in the 2019–neither of whom ran in the Derby. He had one of the Preakness favorites last year in MGSW First Mission (Street Sense), only to have that horse scratched the day before the race. “We put a lot of focus on the Kentucky Derby, and that obviously does take away from Preakness a little bit,” the multiple Eclipse winning conditioner said. “It's just not as common to run these horses back in two weeks as maybe it used to be. It basically comes down to how the horse is doing, and we're happy with the way he's training. Based off who we hear is running, he stacks up with that group of horses–bottom line.” Cox said Catching Freedom will leave for Baltimore after training Monday morning. A black-type assignment is looming on the horizon for Casino Princess (NZ) (Casino Prince) after she capped a consistent formline with victory in Saturday’s Macmillan Accountants (1560m) at Rotorua. The five-year-old daughter of Casino Prince went into Saturday’s race as the winner of three of her nine career starts. She had placed in another four, including all of her three previous appearances in her current preparation. Casino Princess resumed with a third behind Freeze Frame at Matamata in late February, then was runner-up at Tauranga to the subsequent Gr.3 Easter Handicap (1600m) placegetter Chatahoochee. In her last start at Te Rapa on April 14, Casino Princess had a tough three-wide run and rider Tayla Mitchell dropped her whip, but she still finished a close second behind Zantabulous. Saturday’s $35,000 Rating 75 race marked a deserved breakthrough for Casino Princess. She jumped well from the inside gate and was given an economical run by jockey Michael McNab, settling in fourth behind Madame Le Fay, Extortion and Nigella Lane. McNab moved across heels coming up to the home turn and brought Casino Princess cruising up on the outside of Extortion at the top of the straight. McNab released the brakes and Casino Princess quickly opened up a clear lead. Resuming stayer Pacheco stormed home in the last 150m to provide a late scare, but Casino Princess was far enough in front and held on by a long head. “There was a good speed and I just sat behind that, then tracked up,” McNab said. “She got out at the right time and won well. “She’s in solid form. I’ve been annoying the connections for a little while to get on her, and I finally got on her today. Progressive galloper Orlov (NZ) (Sweynesse) made it consecutive victories and three wins in his last five starts when he dashed home near the fence to take out the feature flat race at New Plymouth on Saturday, the Landmark Homes (1800m). The six-year-old son of Sweynesse is raced by a group including his trainer David Haworth, who co-bred him and had produced a career best performance at his last start when taking out a rating 90 2040m contest at Wanganui, in the process downing handy performers Prince Alby and Aljay who featured prominently in the Listed Rotorua Cup (2200m) further north on Saturday when finishing sixth and second respectively in the black type event. Settled towards the rear of the eight-horse field by rider Kate Hercock, Orlov looked to be battling slightly approaching the home bend as Poser, White Noise and pacemaker Our Jumala had settled down to a three-way struggle. Our Jumala shook off the other pair at the 150m and looked set for victory but hadn’t factored in the finishing burst of Orlow who had a full head of steam at that point as he charged along closest to the fence to dash through and win by a half-a-length at the line. Haworth was delighted with the win as he explained the horse was coming into his own following a wind operation earlier in his career. “He is racing really well of late and it was another good performance yesterday (Saturday),” Haworth said. “We had considered going to Rotorua for the Cup after his last victory, but I felt this was a better option rather than travelling all the way up there and maybe striking an unsuitable track. “He has always had ability but he had to have a wind operation and I think in this campaign he is finally learning how to manage it. “He was coming up nicely and then he got a virus that took him a while to get over but now he is right, and you can see that in his form of late. “That could be his last run in this campaign although we might hold on and try to get him to Trentham if the tracks say alright but that could be a longshot at this time of the year. “It was great to win as the race sponsors (Landmark Homes) sponsored one about eight years ago that his mother (Diamond Cut) won so it is quite the coincidence.” Haworth was also looking forward to Diamond Cut foaling down later this year as she is carrying a foal by Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) winner Noverre who will stand for his third season at Waikato Stud for a fee of $10,000+GST in 2024. Orlov is the first foal of Diamond Cut, a daughter of Guillotine, who won four races in a truncated 13-start career that was curtailed by injury. Two-year-old filly Connello (NZ) (Time Test) produced a powerful home straight sprint in tricky conditions to capture her maiden victory when taking out the AB Electrical Ltd 2YO (1200m) at New Plymouth on Saturday. The Lisa Latta-trained daughter of Time Test was fresh-up off a break following a similar effort at Trentham back in March where she also finished strongly for third behind the promising Sergeant Major. Settled near the rear by rider Chris Dell during the early stages of the race, Connello was more than eight lengths from tearaway pacemaker Pleasing approaching the home bend with Dell hard at work as he urged her to move into contention. Connello picked up the bit nicely early in the run home and quickly joined issue at the 150m before holding out a late challenge from Cambridge visitor Raziah to win by a nose at the line. Latta was pleased to see the way the filly stretched out in the run home as she eyes a black type target for her early in June. “We gave her a freshen up after her Trentham run and the couple of weeks in the paddock has worked well for her,” Latta said. “She is a true little professional and she really found the line nicely and appeared to enjoy the wetter track conditions. “I think she will be a better filly during her three-year-old season but while she is in form we are looking at the Castletown Stakes (Listed, 1200m) for her at Wanganui on the first weekend in June as a nice target.” Dell was all smiles after the victory as he spoke about the performance by his mount. “Race experience always puts them in good stead as she was up against a number of first starters,” he said. “She has been around some good horses lately and has knocked on the door. “She is an honest little horse and she copped the track which is a huge thing going forward.” Bred by Helen Phinney, Tom Johnston and Georgia Brown under their HGT Bloodstock banner along with part-owner David Woodhouse, Connello is out of the Towkay mare Baillieborough and is from a family that traces back to outstanding juvenile galloper Beaufort Lass who was a multiple stakes winner and rated the top filly on the 1981-82 NZ 2YO Free Handicap. By Mike Love Betterthandiva is one of a few horses looking to scrape into the final of the Canterbury Plains Challenge Series as the 10th and final heat takes place at Ashburton today. Orari trainer Lionel Dobbs, with wife Janine, are confident the six year old Betterthancheddar mare will acquit herself well today. “I think she’s ready for it”, said Janine Dobbs. “She’s been working really well and she’s come through her last run pretty good. She should be up with them today provided she gets a good run and everything goes to plan.” Betterthandiva currently sits 15th on the table, with the likes of Kink, Kennedy and Fernz Goldy all looking to secure spots in the top 14 to make the final. “It would be great (to make the final) Lionel’s been training for a few years now and we haven’t had a winner (in the harness code). We do well with the gallopers, but the trotters are a different story.” Dobbs has had 1 placing from 169 starters to the races in the harness code when Pocket Call ran third back in 2019 at Forbury Park. “We’ve got a trotter Just Charlie who qualified a couple of weeks ago who will probably race at Timaru (May 26th) and a Sky Major who we like that is just working up nicely. Plus we have 5 gallopers in work, one of which will race next week at Riccarton. It’s a big enough team.” Betterthandiva has been with Dobbs for her previous six races, which includes three fourths. “She was a bit crook when we first got her. A bad virus and a respiratory infection. So it’s taken a while to get her back, but she loves life at the moment.” Betterthandiva will be driven by John Dunn who has a busy book of 8 drives today. Clarke, the leading trainer for 11 years, and Todd, the top jockey for past four years, sealed a winning treble at Darwin on Saturday. Influential Jack ($3.70) saluted for Clarke at the 13th attempt over 1300m (0-70), Spaceship the $1.40 bookmaker favourite, made it two wins from two Top End starts over 1200m (BM76), and Patriotic King ($3) – Fannie Bay’s 1100m track record holder – prevailed over 1100m (0-64). That’s 13 wins from the last five meetings for Clarke, while it’s eight wins from the past three meetings for Todd. Phil Cole and apprentice Emma Lines, who sit in second place, combined to win the other two races with debutante Moorestown ($2.90 fav) over 1300m (0-58) and Miami Vice ($2.35 fav) in an 1100m maiden. Cole (23) and Lines (22) are likely to finish second behind Clarke and Todd come July 31. Influential Jack, a seven-year-old gelding by Epaulette, shared the early lead with Cole’s Soul Spirit and Chloe Baxter’s Swing With Junior – they were six lengths clear at the 1000m. Sitting three deep, Influential Jack eased back into third place, but once turning for home, he pounced before overcoming Soul Spirit ($2.45 fav) by 0.7 lengths. Swinging for home at the 350m, Spaceship – formerly trained by Robert Heathcote at Eagle Farm – had his mind back on racing before winning by 3.4 lengths from Bel’s Banner ($6) and Star Magnum ($4). Patriotic King, a five-year-old gelding by Starspangledbanner, has been a consistent performer for Clarke, but he hadn’t won since Melbourne Cup Day. Kicking clear at the 1000m, Patriotic King was six lengths clear at the 200m before tiring to finish 2.5 lengths ahead of Cole’s Exceedingly Magic ($12) and Tayarn Halter’s Raffalli ($7). Moorestown, a four-year-old gelding by Shalaa, formerly of NSW, was camped three deep with fellow leaders Awen, a stablemate, and Clarke’s Extreme Emotion. Hitting the front at the final bend, Moorestown went on to claim a tremendous win by 1.7 lengths from Kevin Lamprecht’s Sweet As Scandi ($13) and Extreme Emotion ($7). Miami Vice, a three-year-old gelding by Shalaa, was a first up third in a 1000m maiden in April after leaving Victoria. Although camped on the fence after jumping from pole position on Saturday, he had three rivals for company out in front passing the 900m.
