  5. After the disappointment of City Of Troy last Saturday, it is up to Ballydoyle's fellow TDN Rising Star Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) to seek to redress the balance in Sunday's Emirates-sponsored G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at ParisLongchamp. While the stable's 3-year-olds seem to be gradually creeping into gear with every passing day, there is the sense that they are more than a little rusty as they reappear from winter quarters and the son of Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will have to be near a peak to navigate what is always a tricky encounter around these bends. Along with his more stamina-endowed stablemate Diego Velazquez (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. and G2 Futurity S. winner could be vulnerable first time up with the home contingent sharpened by their trial efforts. A key member of the domestic defence is Nurlan Bizakov's G3 Prix de Fontainebleau winner Ramadan (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), who is re-opposed by Philippe Allaire and Haras d'Etreham's TDN Rising Star Beauvatier (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) after the pair went first and second in the Apr. 14 course-and-distance prep. Beauvatier, who gives the impression he is yet to have a fair crack of the whip, has lucked out again drawn in 10 and the distinct advantage is with his Christopher Head-trained nemesis who has stall five and a less-complicated running style to aid his cause. Bizakov's racing manager Mathieu le Forestier was issuing positive bulletins ahead of the Classic. “His preparation has gone smoothly and Christopher Head is following the pre-established plan,” he said. “All the lights are flashing green. There won't be that many runners, which means we can be more relaxed about our race plan. In a field of 13 runners, that's enough to facilitate a fast-run race, while, by the same token, it should guarantee no hard-luck stories. The race should be a fluid one.” “Victory would be important in so many ways. Le Havre died all too soon after putting the Haras de Montfort and Preaux Stud on the map, so it would obviously make a lot of sense for us to have one of his sons as a stallion prospect.” The Aga Khan has two engaged, but only one live contender in the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained Keran (Fr) (Blue Point {Ire}), who was second to the gelding Lazzat (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) in the seven-furlong G3 Prix Djebel at Deauville last month. “Keran has worked very well and Jean-Claude Rouget thinks that he can stay a mile,” the Stud's director Georges Rimaud said. “It's a gamble that's worth taking.” Louise Procter In Deep In The Pouliches… Unbeaten so far but untried in any kind of black-type contest, White Birch Farm's TDN Rising Star Louise Procter (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) showed enough when dominating the seven-furlong Prix du Belvedere at Chantilly in March to suggest she will play a leading role in the G1 Poule d'Essai Pouliches. She certainly has a draw advantage over Godolphin's G3 Prix Imprudence winner Romantic Style (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), but she needs to have with the latter's G3 Prix Imprudence form looking stronger by the day. After the stellar efforts of the second and third Ramatuelle (Justify) and Tamfana (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) in the 1000 Guineas and the G3 Chartwell S. success of Great Generation (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) on Saturday, Charlie Appleby's representative holds a distinct form edge. How she fares from stall 14 is another matter. Ballydoyle's G3 Staffordstown Stud S. winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf fourth Content (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) looks to provide her late sire with a milestone 100th Group 1 winner, but the same caveat that applies to Henry Longfellow also applies here with her having her first start of the campaign. Scuderia Sagam's G2 Premio Dormello and G3 Premio Primi Passi winner Folgaria (Ire) (Due Diligence) had the Guineas heroine Elmalka (GB) (Kingman {GB}) back in third when extending her tally in Newbury's seven-furlong G3 Fred Darling S. and remains an unknown quantity. Trainer Marco Botti is happy with the post position and said, “I was worried about a wide draw complicating things, but she has got a good draw. Hollie [Doyle] knows the filly well and this is another step up in class from Newbury, even with Roger Varian's filly going on and winning the 1000 Guineas. The form is good and I still think a mile with a bend will suit her better than Newmarket and we think the track at Longchamp will suit her.” Al Shira'aa Farms' G2 Debutante S. winner and G1 Moyglare Stud S. runner-up Vespertilio (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) is charting new territoty for trainer Willie McCreery who said, “We might get the ground we're looking for and we're happy with conditions. It's going to be a tough ask, but I think she's up to showing us her best. I hope the move up to a mile won't be an issue and there are a lot of fillies doing the same in the race. It's a tiny worry, but you have to be confident she will get it and Billy [Lee] will have to ride her like she is going to get it.” Over To Los Angeles… Ballydoyle do not at this stage have the normal clutch of Derby contenders at their disposal, with more beaten than successful in the trials so far this month, so the return of last year's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud winner Los Angeles (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in Sunday's G3 Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial at Leopardstown carries extra significance. In the card's G3 Al Shira'aa Racing “Mutamakina” S. for 3-year-old fillies over the mile trip of the upcoming Irish 1000 Guineas, the Goffs Million winner One Look (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) is the dominant presence taking on Ballydoyle's illustriously-bred G3 Ballylinch Stud Priory Belle S. third Buttons (Ire) (Kingman {GB}). Back at ParisLongchamp, the newly-downgraded G2 St Mark's Basilica Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary hosts the G3 Prix Vanteaux winner Dare To Dream (Fr) (Camelot {GB}), who bids to continue trainer Gavin Hernon's dream scenario that he mapped out at the track last month. 10. Eddie Plesa, Jr. secured his 2,500th career training victory with the 3-year-old gelding Raging Fury at Gulfstream Park Apr. 13. TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack caught up with the highly respected 74-year-old conditioner for a wide-ranging interview to discuss the milestone victory, his trip to the 2-year-old sales in Ocala this spring, the future of the sport and much more. TDN: Let's start things off with your milestone victory. What does it mean to you to reach 2,500 wins? EP: When you hit a number like that, you take pride in the accomplishment and the longevity. You look back and see certain things that you've accomplished during your career–it's been a long career. I feel very fortunate. I've been very blessed in this game. But there's also a bit of melancholy. I'm sure we'll end up getting into that more. But the business isn't the same, there's no question about it. Don't like the way it's going. But it is what it is. TDN: Hold that thought for a moment and we'll circle back to discuss the current state of the industry. Let's just chat a little bit more about your landmark victory first. Did you get a chance to celebrate? Knowing how much you enjoy the 2-year-old sales, I'm thinking you might say that you celebrated by signing some tickets in Ocala the following week. EP: (Laughs)… I went out with family and we toasted. Some close friends came over. Things like that. It was noticed by the people around me and we did celebrate it. Itsmyluckyday | Spendthrift TDN: Looking back at your career, Three Ring and Itsmyluckyday were two of your big horses through the years. But is there one win or memory that sticks out when you reflect on your training career? EP: When Itsmyluckyday won the Grade I in New York (2014 GI Woodward S. at Saratoga), that race really sticks out because–a, it was a Grade I; b, it was at Saratoga; and c, we ran again against the horse that beat us previously (finished second behind the Eric Guillot-trained Moreno in the GI Whitney S.) and there was a little banter going on as far as the Racing Form was concerned. (Guillot) said that he had Voodoo and I said, 'Well, I'll have a medal of Saint Joseph on my horse that day so your Voodoo isn't gonna work.' It was fun. Needless to say, we were able to sell him (Itsmyluckyday began his stud career at Spendthrift Farm before relocating to Ohio) and we did quite well with that and he also made a lot of money for us (on the track). Any comfort that I have now in my life, a lot of it has to do with Itsmyluckyday. Training horses is not a business where trainers make a lot of money. Especially with everyday trainers, you're (robbing) Peter to pay Paul. I've been very fortunate and lucky. My wife kept a handle on things and did all of the bookkeeping. If I were to quit tomorrow, my lifestyle wouldn't change. TDN: How many are you training/how big is your operation these days? Retirement doesn't exactly seem to be on your radar after reloading with some 2-year-olds at OBS this spring. EP: Not very big. I've got 16-18 horses right now. Just kinda cruising. I've got people that have worked for me for a long period of time. My assistant trainer has been with me for over 20 years. I've got a groom that's been with me for probably 26 years. There's a lot of longevity with the people that work for me. I feel a certain responsibility to them. They've been good to me and I would hope they would say that I've been good to them. How much longer am I going to do this? I don't know, the game's changing so drastically and it's even changing faster now than I've ever seen it. So, I don't know. TDN: You wound up with three from OBS April ($150,000 Girvin colt; $60,000 Girvin colt; and a $27,000 Win Win Win filly) and one from OBS March ($32,000 Take Charge Indy colt). You've been a long-time supporter of the 2-year-old sales and also purchased the aforementioned Itsmyluckyday (on behalf of Trilogy Stable and Eddie's wife Laurie for $110,000) at the 2012 OBS March sale. How did things go for you in Ocala this spring? EP: It's a draft system for me. Two-year-olds are what I enjoy most of all. I'll know what the 2-year-olds are that I bought this year at this time next year. I've got some nice horses in the barn now–some stakes horses and stakes-quality horses. That makes you get up in the morning and feel good. If they were just horses, I wouldn't be doing it. I've got some great owners–Karl and Cathi Glassman, David Melin, Marion Montanari, Leon Ellman–and those are the kind of relationships that you enjoy. It makes your job so much easier. Ticking | Lauren King TDN: Any big races coming up for the stable or horses that you're looking forward to running in the near future? EP: The 2-year-olds are a ways away. I've got an older horse Ticking (Bolt d'Oro) whose gonna run in a seven-eighths of a mile stakes race (Big Drama H.) at Gulfstream. We gave a lot of money for him ($675,000 '22 OBSAPR). He's a 4-year-old and he's shown flashes. He needs to break through. Hopefully, this will be the race. I've also got a filly Epona's Hope (Adios Charlie)–she's a 3-year-old and I think that she's a stakes horse. She's won a couple of allowance races. TDN: You touched on it earlier that the business just isn't the same. What are some of the biggest issues that you are concerned about right now? EP: The industry did it to itself. Jurisdictions never worked together. They didn't work together on something as simple as licensing and uniformed medication. When I first came around, stewards were to be feared. If you did something that racetrack ownership and management didn't like, they would kick you out. That seemed to go by the wayside. I think managements of most racetracks are more concerned with how many horses does so and so have. 'Oh, I can't kick him out. He's got 40 horses. He's got 50 horses.' I don't see racing's future as rosy. I see a business that–and it's kind of ironic–Dennis Drazin (the chairman and CEO of Darby Development, the management team that operates Monmouth Park) fought the war to get sports gambling. What did horse racing get out of it? Nothing. I mean really, nothing. Sports gambling comes in. Now what happens? People want to bet on sports. They get away from horse racing. Younger people are not betting on horse racing because they're more interested in sports. You can barely find an article in a newspaper that says anything about horse racing except for the Kentucky Derby. And the coverage is next to nothing. You watch ESPN and there's just a little blurb about the Derby. We've lost our way. We've lost our strength. At one time, we were the only game in town. That's not true anymore. I just read an article that handle betting on horses is down nationwide and it's not a surprise. When I first came around, there was no such thing as year-round racing. We hear a lot about racetracks and horses breaking down. When you run year-round on racetrack surfaces, those surfaces need a break. They need to be revamped. They need time off. And they don't do that. They look for a solution. What's the solution? We're gonna put in a new synthetic racetrack. It's a shortcut. I believe that I've seen the best of it–no ifs ands or buts. I hope I'm wrong. I truly am. I've got three children and I could've brought two into the business. At that time, I had a good business going–50-60 horses–and they would've been an asset to me. But I saw what was going on. One of them goes to work now with a gun at his hip–he's a police lieutenant–and I feel better that he has the job that he does as a civil servant rather than coming into my business being a horse trainer. Eddie Plesa | Coglianese TDN: It certainly doesn't sound like it, but do you feel any better about racing's future with HISA (Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority) now firmly in place? EP: I give them credit for trying. But, it's the same old story. You're bringing in the federal government to police a sport that should've been policing itself. I just think logic is gone. There's logical steps to do things and they just refused to do it. That part of the game is over. They got HISA in and they are trying to do the best that they can. But what experience do they have in the game? It makes it tough on us. TDN: You no longer have to compete against Jorge Navarro and Jason Servis, but do you still feel like a lot of trainers are cheating? How clean do you think the game is right now? EP: It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that some of these trainers that just went away were cheating. I don't think it's as bad as it was, but do I think people are still taking advantage? Yeah, I do. TDN: Any closing thoughts? EP: I've been so fortunate. I feel blessed that I have a great family. I feel blessed that I met a lot of people in this game that were captains of industry–doers and shakers. That's the one thing about being a horse trainer, you meet these people. Barry Schwartz (owned GISW Three Ring) was one. I'd call him and talk about his horses. And he was a 50% owner in Calvin Klein. The average person has no conception or idea about the care and love that these horses get. No idea. It's a great sport and it doesn't get the credit that it should. 12. Norman Williamson set a new record for the highest-priced horse sold at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale when his Justify colt was knocked down to Anthony Stroud on behalf of Godolphin for €2.3 million on what was a banner day for the stallion. The result came less than an hour after Eddie O'Leary broke his own personal record for the highest priced achieved at a breeze-up sale when his Lynn Lodge Stud-consigned Justify colt went the way of Alex Elliott on behalf of Amo Racing for €1 million before the same outfit sold a filly by the stallion to Coolmore deep into the session for €800,000. However, while such sales exemplify the booming trade at the top, the theory that Brexit was to blame for the shakey underbelly to the market at the breeze-up sales in Britain this year was kicked to the curb with just a 75% [down from 83% last year] clearance rate posted on Saturday after a significant number of private sales. The aggregate did climb 3% to €21,769,000 while the average was up by 9% to €166,176 and the median fell by €10,000 to €100,000. Williamson is no stranger to big-ticket results, and can point to Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Native Trail (GB) as being the most high-profile horse that has charted a path from his renowned Oak Tree Farm to Godolphin, but even he admitted to feeling the pressure this breeze-up season. The visibly emotional consignor said shortly after the sale, “It's been a stressful week to say the least. He pulled a shoe after the practice breeze and stood on the nail so we have been minding that for a few days. But then he breezed exceptionally well. His breeze was out of this world-as we all know, he did the fastest time here. “It's been fabulous-I couldn't have dreamed of a result like that. I knew all the right players were on him but I didn't think he'd go to that. But he is by the right sire and he is very good-looking. Godolphin has been lucky with me on Native Trail.” Williamson added, “It's very emotional because so much work goes in behind the scenes. It's probably worse for me because I ride them all myself and know what they are capable of. It's a tough business but it's a great business when it works. It's tougher than ever. They [the buyers] are gone very particular on times and other things. You need the good horses to pay for the others.” The Justify colt represents an outstanding piece of pinhooking from Williamson. Sourced at the Keeneland September Sale for just $150,000, the colt out of black-type High Chaparral (Ire) mare Inchargeofme (GB) looks very well bought now. Williamson said, “He looked like a turf horse when we bought him whereas the Justifys in America are big, dirt horses. Like, Eddie's horse who made a million earlier, he's a big, strong horse and I think that's what the Americans like. I think this lad will suit Europe and there's a lot of High Chaparral to him. I liked that about him. I had a very good horse by High Chaparral called Contributer (Ire) so everything was right for me anyway.” And everything was right for Godolphin, too. Lot 110 is now set to be trained by Charlie Appleby with Stroud left tipping his hat once again to the consignor for coming up trumps with another high-class prospect. He said, “He's a very nice horse and we loved his breeze. The consignor sold us Native Trail so he was one horse we wanted to take home to Moulton Paddocks. It's early days yet but Justify is truly a remarkable stallion.” Asked if he was expecting Coolmore to stage such a staunch counter effort to Stroud's bidding, he replied, “I wish it hadn't [gone to such a level]. Coolmore are fantastic judges so you were going to be bidding against them because he was an outstanding horse.” On the market, he added, “At breeze-ups, there is a percentage who perform very well, so they will be in demand. There is a percentage who don't hit the chart so it is very polarised. “For the consignor, it's a very difficult discipline to get right but, when it does go right, it's a big payday for them. They deserve everything that they achieve and a lot of good horses have come out of the breeze-ups. Vandeek (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) came out of the breeze-ups last year and Native Trail came before him. Over the years, a lot of very good horses have come out of these sales. O'Leary: 'He Could Be A Freak – We'll Never Be Able To Afford Another Justify' O'Leary was left thanking his lucky stars about the fact that he was able to get in on Justify before the share price sky-rocketed. Bought for $135,000 at the September Yearling Sale at Keeneland, lot 62 is out of Galileo (Ire) mare Curlylocks (Ire), herself a full-sister to Churchill (Ire), and the colt certainly lived up to his billing when going the way of Amo Racing. “I was expecting him to sell well as he was very popular and the right guys were on him,” O'Leary said. “It was a magic result. I hope he is seriously lucky for Amo and I thank them very much. He's a double of his Dad. I even have a photograph of his Dad as a yearling to show people how alike they are. Listen, Justify is an unbelievable stallion and we won't be able to buy them again. It's great to be able to sell two of them this week and hopefully they go on to be lucky.” Asked if he was expecting Justify to take off in the way that he has over the past six months, O'Leary added, “No, but I was watching. You could buy a Justify at Keeneland last September. We'll never be able to buy them again. It's magic, but it won't happen again, so we better enjoy it.” Lynn Lodge Stud has sold horses for more than a million before but never at a breeze-up sale meaning even O'Leary could admit that Saturday's result was a special one. He concluded, “Sure it's great-I'll take a million anywhere! It's a fantastic result but what they all make put together is what counts. I've never got this sort of money for a breezer. I got 760,000gns for Great White Eagle (Elusive Quality) and 800,000gns for a Kingman (GB) filly at the Craven but never got a million for a breezer before this. Breezers don't make that sort of money so it's just fantastic. “For a big horse to do what he did, he must be an unnatural talent. He could be a freak-he's so big but yet he's so agile and he knows where his feet are. His knees are closed and his joints are like steel. He found me, I didn't find him.” The Justify colt headlined a strong afternoon's buying by Amo boss Kia Joorabchian. As well as that lot, which was signed for by Elliott, the team also struck early in the session for a Too Darn Hot (GB) filly from Yeomanstown Stud for €800,000. On the Justify colt, Elliott commented, “He's a standout horse for us. What can you say about a horse you think has everything? For the way the stallion has gone, even since September when this horse was bought, he's been doing unbelievable things. He's been bought for Amo Racing and we're trying to buy the best we can. Hopefully he's one of them. “We've got a very big horse in the stable called King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett {GB}). If we can get this horse anywhere near emulating what he's done then we'll all be very happy. He's got size, scope, strength, pedigree, his dam's a sister to Churchill. When you give that money for a horse you need to be pretty sure you're buying the right article and we're all hoping, but, and it's an awful cliche, he's ticked all the boxes.” He added, “Kia is very keen to buy the best he can and hopefully that's what we're doing as a team. You never know what these horses might make, it's just a case of whose appetite is there for the horse. You never really know where they're going to fall but that was what we were thinking he'd cost. If he's good, he could look cheap.” Meanwhile, it was Robson Aguiar who signed for the Too Darn Hot filly, with the Brazilian native revealing that lot 19 would likely be trained by Dominic Ffrench Davis. Coolmore had to be patient to sign for a Justify of their own, but Lynn Lodge Stud's filly [lot 187] by the stallion may have been worth the wait. It was Elliott again who signed for the daughter of G1 Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), bought by Mags O'Toole at Keeneland in September for $110,000. “There's a little bit of deja vu from earlier in the day,” said Elliott. “She's a beautiful filly by Justify out of a Grade 1 winner. She breezed exceptionally well but I think she'll take a bit of time as she's more of a three-year-old type. For her to show that pace and balance and poise in the breeze, she's got the potential to be an exceptional filly.” He added, “We did well here last year buying a filly called Classical Song who ran fourth in the Fillies' Mile. Hopefully this filly can win her maiden and go along the same lines as a two-year-old, but I see her being a Classic type of filly at three. She's been acquired by Coolmore and everyone was keen to get her, but no trainer has been decided yet.” Talking points Blandford Bloodstock was out on its own as the leading buyer after signing for 11 horses to the tune of €2,775,000. Richard Brown was responsible for the headline acts–a €650,000 McKinzie colt from Malcom Bastard, a Blue Point (Ire) colt for €550,000 from Willie Browne and Jim McCartan's Not This Time colt for €460,000. Justify was the dominant force with four lots by the stallion selling for €4,390,000. Not only that, but it was fascinating to see that American-based stallions made up six of the top 10 slots on aggregate and average. It wasn't just the American-bred horses that played a prominent role at Arqana. Owner Mike Repole was a familiar name on the buyers' sheet after snapping up colts by Siyouni (Fr) and Too Darn Hot for €360,000 and €250,000 respectively. Anna Calder of Leamore Horses opened up to TDN Europe this week about what has been her toughest year yet in the consignment ranks. After breaking her leg in January, Calder called on the likes of John Cullinan, Blarney Holland and Roger Marley to help get the horses prepared for the sales. It clearly worked a treat with her Bolt D'Oro colt, bought for $95,000 back in September, selling to Anthony Stroud for €400,000. Up And Down Week For Hassett Some days you are the dog, the next, you are the lamppost. Nobody knows that better than Johnny Hassett who, after suffering a broken leg when holding one of his own horses ahead of the breeze on Thursday, watched on from his hospital bed in France as his Bloodstock Connection cleared over €1 million. Heading that seven-strong draft for Hassett was a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt to Anthony Stroud for €430,000. The profit in that colt wasn't insignificant, either, given he was purchased for €160,000 at Orby Book 2. Hassett also enjoyed a fine result with his Too Darn Hot filly–a €100,000 Orby Book 1 purchase–selling to trainer Fabrice Chappet for €400,000. Recalling how he ended up watching the breeze-up sale from a hospital bed, Hassett said, “I was bringing the Too Darn Hot colt [lot 143] over and sometimes these horses can get a bit excited at the start. He jumped forward, got in front of me a little bit and kicked out. “He kicked me just below the knee at the top of the tibia. The bone is shaped like a funnel and it broke off half the funnel, so he's broken the tibia and part of the knee joint, which makes it quite sore, I can tell you!” The consignor added, “I got taken away in an ambulance but I'm lucky that I have a really good team. I couldn't really talk for the first day or two and I didn't have reception or Whatsapp so they just had to do their thing. They came and met me every night and we went through the lists and then we had a morning meeting between seven and eight.” Bargary Pays Emotional Tribute To Jockey Michael Byrne After selling his Invincible Spirit (Ire) filly for €145,00, Colin Bargary paid an emotional tribute to Michael Byrne, the former jockey who died at the age of 36 last week. A €45,000 yearling purchase at Tattersalls Ireland, the sale to agent Eric Libaud represented one of the best pinhooks to date for Drumonna House, but there was no cheering afterwards at Barn C given the Byrne family were closely in Bargary's thoughts. He said, “She was a quality filly and we're delighted by how she breezed. It's a good result for everyone involved and the team at home but, to be honest, we're all thinking about the Byrne family over here. It's been a very tough week for everyone and things like that just puts things into perspective.” Brother to prominent breeze-up handler Stephen, and son of the former high-class National Hunt jockey turned trainer Michael snr, Michael was best known for his successful spell riding in England. Golden Touch Lot 137 Earthlight colt out of Macrame (Montjeu) Consigned by Shanaville Stables Bought by Hubert Guy Bloodstock for €170,000 having been sourced for just €37,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale Take a bow Eoin McDonagh. The man behind Shanaville Stables recorded a sale to remember when his €37,000 Earthlight colt rocked into €170,000. Out of an unraced Montjeu mare, lot 137 recorded an eye-catching breeze and certainly wasn't missed by the market to deliver a notable result for the first-season sire and vendor. Thought for the day There could have been some serious value going begging at Arqana on Saturday. Many of the top vendors and buyers were in agreement that the catalogue of horses assembled was completely up to scratch but the figures tell you everything you need to know about the trade. The middle market remains in a tricky place and it would make you question whether there is a need for two extra breeze-up sales in Ireland next year. 13. Providing a timely boost to the G1 Poule d'Essai Pouliches prospects of Content (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), John Hennessy's Sea The Boss (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Shaella {Ire}, by Casamento {Ire}) captured Saturday's G3 Al Shira'aa Racing Irish EBF Jannah Rose S. at Naas to set her course towards the Irish Oaks. Only eighth behind that Ballydoyle peer in the G3 Staffordstown Stud S. at The Curragh when last seen in October, the Jessica Harrington trainee who was also behind Content when fourth in Leopardstown's Listed Ingabelle S. in September enjoyed the extra stamina test on this return to deny Madam Celeste (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) late on. Unhurried early by Shane Foley as she raced behind her four rivals, the 7-2 shot had to come around them all turning for home but delivered a powerful surge to overhaul that Ger Lyons trainee in the final 50 yards and score by a neck. “She was good last year and I just ran her back too quick after the Champions Weekend. She doesn't go on soft ground,” Harrington explained. “It was a big ask for her, with three of them having already had a run this year. I thought fitness might catch her out, but she was good and stayed well. She has a turn of foot and showed us that last year, when she won her maiden. 14. Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mystik Dan will continue his pursuit of racing's Triple Crown in the May 18 $2 million Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course, trainer Kenny McPeek confirmed May 11.View the full article
  15. The GI Kentucky Derby hero, Mystik Dan (Goldencents), will run May 18 in the 149th GI Preakness Stakes at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course, trainer Kenny McPeek said Saturday morning via a Churchill Downs press release. “All systems go,” McPeek said. “He'll ship out in the morning.” The champ had a routine 1 1/2-mile gallop at Churchill Downs under retired jockey Robby Albarado, who will be part of the Derby winner's travel team to Baltimore. After an endoscopic exam and bloodwork was analyzed just to ensure everything was normal, the colt was given the greenlight to travel to Maryland. “The horse is doing fantastic,” McPeek said after Mystik Dan trained. “I've already kind of arranged the logistics of it all.” Mystik Dan will get a rematch in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness with Muth (Good Magic), who won the GI Arkansas Derby in late March. “He was ready for the Arkansas Derby,” McPeek said. “I'm not going to use that as an excuse. But he did get turned sideways in that turn, and Brian felt that cost him three or four lengths. But the horse fought back, fortunately… I'm optimistic we can give (Muth) another run.” The draw for the Preakness will take place Monday, May 13. 16. Relishing the step up to an extended 11 furlongs on Saturday, Ambiente Friendly (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}–Roxity {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}) gave the Gredleys something to dream about over the next three weeks with a power-packed display in Lingfield's Listed Derby Trial. Keen initially for Callum Shepherd before enjoying cover behind the early leaders, the 8-1 shot moved to the front with two furlongs to race and left his rivals for dead from there. At the line, the James Fanshawe-trained 80,000gns Craven Breeze-Up purchase who had been fourth in the nine-furlong Listed Feilden S. at Newmarket last month had 4 1/2 lengths to spare over Ballydoyle's 6-4 favourite Illinois (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). 17. In scenes reminiscent of Wednesday's Listed Cheshire Oaks, Saturday's Listed Oaks Trial Fillies' S. at Lingfield resulted in a Ralph Beckett-trained filly getting to the line ahead of a Ballydoyle runner with You Got To Me (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}–Brushing {GB}, by Medicean {GB}) on top where it mattered. Last seen finishing fifth in Newmarket's Listed Montrose Fillies' S. in November, Valmont and Newsells Park Stud's 200,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 purchase set off at a demanding clip under Hector Crouch while her rivals were under restraint waiting for her to crack. Helped by her athleticism as she descended to the home turn, the 7-2 shot kept finding as the remainder closed in and found the line half a length ahead of Aidan O'Brien's representative Rubies Are Red (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was the strongest of the closers. 18. Coolmore America stallion Justify continues to be popular at the Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale, and his colt out of Inchargeofme (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) was knocked down for €2.3 million to Anthony Stroud on behalf of Godolphin later in the day. Coolmore was the underbidder. Sold as lot 110 from the draft of Oak Tree Farm, the bay is from the family of GIII Futurity S. winner and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf third Nagirroc (Lea). His dam was third in the GIII Mint Julep H. Bred by Nursery Place, Manfuso and Wilhite in Kentucky, the February foal was a $150,000 Keeneland September purchase by Norman Williamson last autumn. Stroud commented, “He's a very nice horse and we loved his breeze. The consignor sold us Native Trail so he was one horse we wanted to take home to Moulton Paddocks. It's early days yet but Justify is truly a remarkable stallion.” Asked if he was expecting Coolmore to stage such a staunch counter effort to Stroud's bidding, he replied, “I wish it hadn't. Coolmore are fantastic judges so you were going to be bidding against them because he was an outstanding horse.” New top price! 19. Lot 62, a burly son of Justify and Curly Locks (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), was the first horse to break the seven-figure mark at Arqana's May Breeze-Up Sale on Saturday, selling for €1 million to Alex Elliott, buying on behalf of Amo Racing. Consigned by Lynn Lodge Stud, the chestnut is out of a full-sister to dual Guineas winner and Group 1 sire Churchill (Ire), as well as G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Clemmie (Ire) and G3 Diamond S. winner Blenheim Palace (Ire). He was bred by Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt in Kentucky. Mags O'Toole picked him up for $135,000 out of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He was consigned by @LynnStud. pic.twitter.com/AWdCzKDyka — ARQANA (@InfoArqana) May 11, 2024 Elliott said, “He's a standout horse for us. What can you say about a horse you think has everything? For the way the stallion has gone, even since September when this horse was bought, he's been doing unbelievable things. He's been bought for Amo Racing and we're trying to buy the best we can. Hopefully he's one of them.” He added, “We've got a very big horse in the stable called King Of Steel. If we can get this horse anywhere near emulating what he's done then we'll all be very happy. He's got size, scope, strength, pedigree, his dam's a sister to Churchill. When you give that money for a horse you need to be pretty sure you're buying the right article and we're all hoping, but, and it's an awful cliche, he's ticked all the boxes. “Kia is very keen to buy the best he can and hopefully that's what we're doing as a team. You never know what these horses might make, it's just a case of whose appetite is there for the horse. You never really know where they're going to fall but that was what we were thinking he'd cost. If he's good, he could look cheap.” The post Alex Elliott Snaps Up €1 Million Justify Colt At Arqana For Amo Racing appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 20. An emotional Alex Rae was delighted to see stable star Shock ‘Em Ova (NZ) (Shocking) demolish his opposition at Caulfield on Saturday. The son of Shocking closed from the tale of the field to land the Selangor Turf Club Handicap (1400m) fresh-up under Dean Yendall and had nearly three lengths on closest rival First Accused. “Mum’s quite sick at the moment and it is pretty difficult, but it is nice to get a win with the big fella,” Rae said as he choked back tears. “He’s a very good horse and we have been so patient. I am so grateful to have the owners in this horse that let me basically stuff around with him for three years, but we believe that being by Shocking and being such a big raw talent that he was really going to deliver. “I haven’t been training that long and I certainly haven’t had any horses at the top level, but we have always believed that this horse could potentially head in that direction. I am not sure how good he is, but he is the best I have had.” A Queensland campaign now beckons Shock ‘Em Ova with the Gr.3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1800m) at Eagle Farm on June 1 his next assignment before a possible tilt at the A$1.2 million Q22 (2200m) a fortnight later. “On what he did today he is going to be really competitive in the Lord Mayor’s and it is probably a good opportunity to now start testing the waters against some better opposition,” Rae said. Shock ‘Em Ova has now won five of his 10 career starts with a further four placings and boasts A$412,350 in prizemoney and the long-range plan is the Gr.1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in spring. Shock ‘Em Ova was bred by Eales Racing Pty Ltd and is the first foal to race out of the two-race-winning Domesday mare Domerova, who comes from the family of the Gr.1 Irish St Leger (2800m) Wicklow Brave (Beat Hollow). Shock ‘Em Ova was offered by Rich Hill Stud in Book 2 of Karaka 2020, where he was purchased by the Rae family’s Northumberland Thoroughbreds for $26,000. View the full article
  21. Te Akau Racing’s venture into Victoria continues to pay dividends, with four-year-old gelding Savoir Faire (NZ) (Savabeel) breaking through for his first metropolitan victory when successful at Caulfield on Saturday. The Mark Walker-trained son of Savabeel came from back in the field under apprentice Celine Gaudray to score a surprise victory in the Darren Gauci Handicap (2000m), his third win from 16 starts with a further six placings. Gaudray has ridden four winners from seven rides for Te Akau. “I galloped this horse the other day and thought he was well and truly over the odds,” she said. “He galloped super and I think he was ridden too far forward last start. “Today we drew a gate where we were able to come back and he was actually a bit keen with the blinkers on in behind. I just had to be patient and wait for my runs to open and luck came our way. “Since Te Akau have come here they have given me a lot of support including quite a few city winners. I really appreciate the support from the stable as they have really nice horses and they do a terrific job.” Savoir Faire’s win provided Te Akau Racing with their 15th Melbourne winner this season, with Walker’s Cranbourne Assistant trainer Ben Gleeson thrilled with the way things are tracking. “We thought that if we can have as many winners in a season as we’ve got boxes — which at the moment is still 20 — that would be the first good achievement in our first season,” he said. “But to have 15 of them as metro winners — I think that’s our 18th winner (overall) with a few months left — so if we can go past 20, it would be exceeding any expectation of any small base setting up regardless of the horses. “We haven’t just sent gun horses over. We’ve sent horses that have been low in the ratings, so that is probably the most satisfying thing.” While a few of those wins came from stable star Imperatriz (I Am Invincible), Savoir Faire started at $21 on Saturday and just seven days earlier former Perth-based galloper Midnight Blue (So You Think) scored his first win for the team at $11 at Caulfield. Walker’s 15 wins from just 52 city runners has him placed just outside the top 10 for trainers at metropolitan level in the state, with a strike rate of about 30 percent. Gleeson said the stable has hopes of scoring a few more victories in the two-and-a-half months until the end of the current season. “You’ll see a mare step out next Saturday called Puketiro (NZ) (Savabeel). She ran at Mornington first-up a couple of weeks ago and had no luck. She was behind a wall of horses on the bridle,” he said. “She’ll go to a fillies and mares’ race over 1200 metres down the straight. She’s a really nice mare. I think she’s won five from 10, so she’s a progressive filly for the winter.” He said a recent hurdle winner at Warrnambool will also step up to a bigger race next start. “Leaderboard (Street Cry) will go to the Australian Hurdle,” he said. “He had a trial at Traralgon yesterday to tick him over. We’re going to have a crack and see how we go. By Savabeel out of the O’Reilly mare Etiquette (NZ), Savoir Faire is a brother to dual Group Three winner Milford (NZ). Savoir Faire was purchased by David Ellis for a sales-topping $640,000 at the 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale from the draft of Ohukia Lodge. View the full article
  22. The Andrew Forsman-trained Positivity (NZ) (Almanzor) proved a grade above her rivals when cruising to a near two-length victory in the SA Fillies Classic (2500m) at Morphettville on Saturday. The daughter of Almanzor was sent out a $2.30 favourite after producing good closing sectionals in the Gr.1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) when ninth, and relished the rise in distance on Saturday. Ridden by Damian Lane, Positivity settled just worse of midfield on the rails and travelled like the winner a long way from home, with Lane’s biggest challenge to avoid those labouring in front of him. Lane nursed the big-framed filly around the home bend and made his move centre-track, comfortably reeling in fellow Kiwi Zambezi Khan (NZ) (Mongolian Khan), who finished second, with Gotta Go Guru (Fiorente) beaten five lengths in third. Forsman admitted he had hoped Positivity would be ridden more forward on Saturday, but after again stepping away slowly Lane had little option but to revert to plan B. “I spoke to Damian this morning and said to be mindful that she has run her better races rolling along being up on pace,” Forsman said. “That is how we wanted to do it today, but she bobbed in the air again when the gates opened today so he went to plan B and she was just the class horse of the field which got her out of trouble. But it was a good patient ride and stepping out to 2500m does help.” Forsman said it was likely Positivity would head for a well-earned break, having progressed from a Tauranga maiden winner in January to be a dual Group Three winner and runner-up in the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m). “I would think it is her last run for the preparation,” Forsman said. “She has done a lot. To go over to Melbourne and settle into a new environment plus two trips back and forth to Adelaide, she has done a very good job to get to this point and I think she can have four or five weeks in the paddock now before a spring preparation. “To be fair, this was her target race. Two weeks ago, she went into the Australasian Oaks off the back of a little bit of a freshen-up and a gap between runs. She boxed on okay but that run was always going to set her up well for today and thankfully it has worked out. “It is great for her owner Ben Kwok who puts a lot of investment into the industry in New Zealand and he is a good supporter of mine, so it is always great when you can get a result for him.” Positivity shapes as a nice staying prospect for the future with Forsman having good options at his disposal care of stables in both Cambridge and Flemington. “She is Group One placed in an Oaks which qualifies her for a few good races in the spring. Whether she is good enough, I guess we will find out,” he said. Owner Ben Kwok purchased Positivity for $160,000 out of the Woburn Farm draft during the Book 1 Yearling Sale at Karaka. The daughter of Almanzor was bred by the late Sir Patrick Hogan and Lady Justine Hogan along with Peter Walker. She is out of Walker’s Group One placegetter Pussy O’Reilly (NZ) (O’Reilly) and from an extended family that includes stakes winners Pussy Willow (NZ) (O’Reilly), Dopff (NZ) (Tights) and Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom). Forsman is a fan of young Cambridge Stud stallion Almanzor, with the Cambridge horseman set to be represented by another stakes-winning daughter of the sire in Moonlight Magic (NZ) (Almanzor) at the forthcoming Brisbane Winter Carnival. “I really like them (Almanzors) and we have been lucky enough to have had a few through the stable,” Forsman said. “They have got good attitudes. Their temperaments are good and they seem to just get better and better with time, which helps when you are trying to develop stayers.” View the full article
