TAB For Ever
Lucky day for the winner of Race 1 at Ellerslie today. It was the Final of the popular Pearl series which has provided for Bonus payments for winning mares/fillies in nominated races for paid-up horses throughout the season. The final was well won today by a ONE win horse that had raced just 6 x times and won $23040. Grey Haze was jasmine Fawcett's only ride of day. The filly takes home $23 k for winning. PLUS the Pearl Series bonus of $70k for the owners , one of whom works on the tote at races ! The runnerup won $20k for its owners , the 3rd horse $10k. Impressive ...well done Entain !

Chief Stipe
13 minutes ago, TAB For Ever said: I'm off to mass to pray for you Chief. I just commenting on a great moment for some 'small' owners. All well and good @TAB For Ever and congratulations to those owners who picked up a windfall. However don't overlook the facts: The Pearl Series isn't open to all - you have to pay a nomination fee of $1,150 or $1,725 if late before your yearling races (that cuts out a few "small owners" and trainers from the get go; The Series is only for fillies and mares. That cuts out the "small owners" and trainers with colts and geldings; It is open to allcomers who pay the fees - small, medium, big and humungous. The odds are the larger owners and stables win most of the bonuses. Indeed if you look at the winners to date there aren't that many "small" breeders on the list. I'm not knocking the New Zealand Bloodstock Pearl Series per se (Sponsored how much by NZ Bloodstock Insurance? Now topped up by ENTAIN) but I just asked the question how much revenue did that Final yesterday produce for the NZ Racing industry? The Series is a good one but don't get too rose tinted about it when you put your Industry glasses on. About 18 years ago I owed a share in a horse that picked about $60k in bonuses which I must say helped keeping her in training a lot easier to afford. Indeed in those days it did make a difference but with all those stake increases that @TAB For Ever keeps telling us about I don't believe it has the same impact. 2023/ 2024 Pearl Series Bonus Winners and Placings Venue Date Placing Race Horse Breeding Breeder Matamata 27.03.24 1st Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn 2yo 1050m Boss 'N' Highheels Written Tycoon x Hell Or Highwater Iskander Racing Syndicate Pty Ltd Matamata 27.03.24 2nd Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn 2yo 1050m Amulet Charm Spirit x Celeris D J Brady, A C Montgomery, D E & E Y Nakhle Matamata 27.03.24 3rd Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn 2yo 1050m Viva Glam Savabeel x Style By Design J Gowler, MDR Bloodstock Ltd & Waikato Stud Ltd Wingatui 17.03.24 1st Entain-NZB Insurance Rating 65 F&M 1600m Bellano Savabeel x Glee Waikato Stud Ltd Wingatui 17.03.24 2nd Entain-NZB Insurance Rating 65 F&M 1600m Radiant Reach Vadamos x Eagle's Reach Mrs L M & R L Bonnington Ashburton 14.03.24 1st Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn F&M 1600m Tranquila Iffraaj x Equanimity Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd Ashburton 14.03.24 2nd Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn F&M 1600m So Graceful So You Think x Hayley Grace Seymour Bloodstock Ashburton 14.03.24 3rd Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn F&M 1600m Raccourci Vespa x Cut Off Mrs T E R Goodwin Gore 10.03.24 1st Entain-NZB Insurance Rating 75 F&M 1335m Adiktiv Passion Ghibellines x Cristallo B J Anderton ONZM & Mrs L E Anderton Gore 10.03.24 3rd Entain-NZB Insurance Rating 75 F&M 1335m Classic Diva Proisir x Scarlet Diva Rich Hill Thoroughbreds Ltd Ellerslie 09.03.24 1st Entain-NZB Insurance F&M SW+P 1600m Pearl Of Alsace Tavistock x Irion Pencarrow Thoroughbreds Ltd Ellerslie 09.03.24 3rd Entain-NZB Insurance F&M SW+P 1600m Cheval D'Or Almanzor x Keepa Cheval Archer Equine Investments Ltd Taupo 08.03.24 1st Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn F&M 1200m Vallarta Per Incanto x Irish Cream N & P Balia Family Trust Taupo 08.03.24 2nd Entain-NZB Insurance Rating 65 F&M 1400m Bellezor Almanzor x Victoria Belle B J Lindsay MNZM & Mrs J E A Lindsay Taupo 08.03.24 3rd Entain-NZB Insurance Rating 65 F&M 1400m Grey Haze Dalghar x Vinskible L M Clarke Otaki 06.03.24 3rd Entain-NZB Insurance Rating 65 F&M 1400m Bridal Train U S Navy Flag x Madeira Mrs H J & P J Crofskey Matamata 24.02.24 1st Entain-NZB Insurance F&M SW+P 1400m Karman Line Myboycharlie x World Away Little Avondale Trust Riccarton Park 23.02.24 2nd Entain-NZB Insurance Mdn F&M 1200m Hot Coco War Decree x Frothed Inglewood Stud (N.Z.) Used to get special requests for Weddings, Christenings and Funerals. Good source of pocket money. So after a while as you climbed the Altar Boy hierarchy you got to pick and choose what you did. Bit like racing really. The maidens did the midweek and Sunday regular mass and the Open Class turned up on the big event days. Even better when you got to manage the roster! The best Wedding return was a $10 note (worth a hundy in today's money)!!! I was blonde and angelic looking in those days. Now silver and long past angelic.

It is easier for the bigger stables to target them than the smaller ones. A better option is to increase the lower grade stakes and repair the handicapping system. 1
Wingman
Those last four words 'repair the handicapping system' are the key to a better future. The best betting races are handicaps in the truest sense in that there will be a genuine 8 kilo spread between top and bottom, sometimes a bigger spread. The smaller stables, with that in place and a calendar fit for purpose, currently it isn't, will get a fairer crack at winning 1

Finally you might see the horses being retained and we get back to true Open Class races rather than glorified R85's where if a horse wins out of its class it is penalised essentially forever!

Not if you keep putting a negative spin on items of interest in the NZ Racing scene.....and twist things to influence us young readers who turn to these forums for some interesting info to stoke up our involvement. The Pearl series is one to be embraced...the cost of registration is trifling compared to many other costs of breeding. It's not outside the scope of a small breeder and many on them register their yearlings......if they don't it little wonder they may be labelled a 'small time ' breeder. Think small , stay small ! There are over 100 Pearl races over most grades during the season. It was great to see Ashburton horse Daphne Dior go north for a crack at the final....in a short 5 start career it had finished 2nd in a Pearl race at Kurow and won in a Pearl series race at Kumara. The races are all over NZ . The Bonus for the winning owner is now $20k as well as a small bonus for trainer and register [ breeder ]. Of course the studs will nominate their horses....like prep fees ,vet fees , food and water and grazing , it part of the presentation of the horse for sale. Most notably some of the winners in past year of Pearl bonus have been horses purchased on Gavelhouse ....for around $3k. A horse with some Harness owners Nobellem won a Pearl race at Gore after earlier racing in North.Another cheap export I know the purchasers of raced 3 x times in Pearl races within a couple of months for placing bonuses. It of interest the background of Grey Haze ,Saturdays winners...small breeder , small owners , possibly Gavelhouse graduate......a few dams back up pops Alynda , a Railway Sprint winner ...Group 1 So you quicksanders on here who believe all you read , delve into things a bit. The Pearl Series is a great initiative and that BS about big expense ,only the big breeders etc , boo hoo no males allowed etc etc can be kicked to touch

Doomed
Perhaps follow the harness racing approach, where maidens race for higher stakes than winners. Certainly an unusual approach, but must be working as harness racing is booming countrywide.

Wingman
TAB For Ever you have got to stop going to church...or alternatively, go and stay. You go, get lectured to, then come back and double down giving all on this site a lecture who you derisively refer to as quicksanders. The Pearl series is like KM, pay or not pay. Both are a form of limited lottery as any sane person knows the majority of payees are paying for a lucky few. With that said if you have a cheap filly you would be well advised to pay up with the knowledge that if placed well, one win will probably go close to paying for a seasons bills. So less lectures please and for your penance TAB For Ever, get out your beads and repeat 10 times, "I will one day rise to the ethereal heights of Wingman" 3
