At the end of the day regardless of whether GRNZ are hitting their KPI's they are doing considerably better than NSW or Queensland.

2024/2025 Season Major 2+ GRNZ KPI = .214%

August 2024 = .476% or over double their KPI figure.

August 2023 = .119% or about half of their current (relaxed) KPI figure.

 

 

You don't have to be concerned about it. However, I am.

With over double the KPI rate in August, they'll have to go the entire month of September with zero Major 2+ injuries to get back even close to their target.

The KPI is wrong in the first place.  Why set a KPI that is half of other jurisdictions and which you largely have little control over.

You see your metrics include injuries that GRNZ have no control over.  For example you can't stop a dog colliding with another dog.

The topic is essentially about dog welfare.  6.3 Greyhounds in a 1000 get injured.  Nearly all recover after dedicated care.

More than 6.3 pet dogs in a thousand are over fed leading to chronic conditions often not treated.

Do you protest against those owners?  I bet your dog is fat and you think you are being kind.

How unlike you to be so concerned about greyhound welfare but since you ask, nope you bet wrong: my vet and I are both very happy with the condition of my hounds who are healthy and happy and at relevant weights for their ages and sizes.

Ah pro racers love your whataboutism, don’t you? As if people only have the capacity to care about one issue at a time. Nope, my emotional range is bigger than that, though of course I can’t speak for you. 
 

As this is clearly an issue close to your heart, what are YOU doing Chief? I’m sure you will find many groups, online and in real life, that you can join to help advocate for overweight pets and educate owners on good pet nutrition or you can speak to your vet professionals or the SPCA to get more information. You could even start an advocacy group yourself!

I didn't set GRNZ's KPI targets, they did.

If no-one takes the time to compare realized injuries to their KPI's, then those targets are basically empty words, something GRNZ has proven themselves to excel at over the years.

You know, empty words like~

• 2014 safety rails for all tracks
• 2022 safety rail for Manukau
• "Welfare underpins everything we do" like~ Sending one dog with a broken leg an hour away to Gore to be operated on, then two weeks later the next dog to incur the same broken leg on 10+ hour long haul to Rangiora for its welfare.

GRNZ expects 2 dogs per 1000 starts to incur a major 2+ injury. One month into the season 5 per 1000 starts have been realized.

 

Is GRNZ alarmed?

Doesn't seem so, because they're not being very transparent about it.

Versus the KPI of 99.8% uninjured.

The fact is that in no high performance event either human or involving dogs or horses is there a 0% injury rate.

Sunday Manukau - abandoned due to rain on the newly refurbished all-weather track.

Monday Southland - meeting now reported.

What a difference a couple of days make.

Two full months complete in the current racing season.

No overall improvement from the first month with reducing Major 2+ injuries.

6 of the 7 tracks running over the KPI.

Southland abandoned after 4 races today due to track problems.

1). The meeting was delayed after race 3 to allow Stewards, club officials, the track curator, and senior trainers to inspect the track. This inspection was prompted by several greyhounds sustaining abraded carpal pad injuries. Remedial work was carried out, with the track to be further monitored. However, following race 4, it was noted that the remedial work had caused a new issue which was unable to be remedied in a timely manner. Following consultations with the track curator, club officials, and Stewards, the track was deemed unsatisfactory for continued racing, leading to the abandonment of the remainder of the meeting.

 

The problems go back to the beginning of the current racing season.

The Stewards make the right call today.

Maybe GRNZ would like to take a look back to what I had to say about Southand on 02 Sept.
