SOFT 5

If any Man from Mars arrived here they'd be thinking planet Earth has constant RAIN

When NZTR adopted the ridiculous Australian rating 'system' they didn't take into account how crazy a SOFT rating sounds when it's NOT SOFT  at all

Maybe to an Arstralian it is...

NZTR then FAILED to recognise the new system introduced another H to the confusion...the old H9 H 10 to H8 H9 H10

When punters HATE H ratings!

It's terribly misleading...however NZTR and Australia are about to introduce a 7 point rating system...surely they'll sort the nonsense out this time?

Doesn't matter what nomenclature you use if you don't measure using at least two quantitative measures that are reliable, repeatable and consistent across surfaces albeit with specific calibration.

The track ratings in NZ are a nonsense.

When was the last time you saw a penetrometer reading?

Well you may well arks @chiefstipe

When I contacted NZTR and pointed out how many readings Australia provide punters in THREE

They said..;it's hard to get our tracks calibrated...then we tried to bring in the shear reading, providing a shear reader to many tracks...but that didn't work out..."

Get the picture Chief?

Then Mick Pitman was ropable when interviewed by Geggy O'Connor on Trackside this weekend

"why are we running on all thes SOFT tracks in the middle of summer FFS"

pretty much word for word...and he has influence on the trainer's committees but how much weight does that carry?

But they weren't running on a Soft 5 were they?  @Pitman was telling fibs again.  They ran 1:07 and a bit in the Timaru Stakes on a Soft 5 which was upgraded to a G4 AFTER the race.  Arguably it was more like a G2.

Pitty got the track he wanted.

I got the impression he was more referring to the starting track rating for the day on tracks throughout the season

G 4 is still the old EASY after all

Pitty trains his steeds to love hard ground evidently

N.B the Cup was still officially run on a SOFT 5

Nothing about 'retrospectively' which they use if they think the race was run on something differently

So they irrigated it to an H 8 (with 1ml rain Thursday night) and had 8 races on a SOFT 5

Seriously, no wonder Pitty was spitting tacks

It wasn't a Soft 5 or arguably a Good 4.

Use your noggin and look at the times.

Walsh walked the track - I doubt Pitty has for years.

At least they're consistent

When PHELEN THE POWER won in '23... 1.22.76 on a S5

The main point..using the default as an SOFT 5 is NUTS isn't it?

Are our horses now so delicate they can't race on a G3?

Why have they got a G1 rating which NEVER happens apart from Towpaw in a blue moon

And got rid of H11...which happens often in winter?/

It's like they report it to suit those who want a bit of give in the track and deliver it to suit the likes of Pitty.

Stipes ALWAYS ask Jockeys after every race what they think the track rating is

1.38 1600M a G3 na

What's Walshy got to do with it...did he say a G3?

Yeah and at a recent Trenthan meeting the Jockeys told the Stipes they were wrong and they didn't change the rating.

The ratings are pure crap and some trainers know that.
