Puts a lot of other things in perspective.  The ripples will spread a long way from this - but it's the family at the centre of it who will be foremost in our thoughts.  Whilst respecting their need to negotiate this tragedy in their space & time & in their own way - we will hope they feel the love & support of all those whose lives they have touched in any way - and indeed the well wishes of strangers too.  Utterly heartbreaking.

Ten-year-old boy killed, father critically injured in Mother’s Day ATV crash

The fatal ATV crash that killed a ten-year-old boy and injured three others was on private property on French Pass Rd.

A 10-year-old boy was killed when an ATV rolled on a rural property near Cambridge on Sunday.

The boy’s father was critically injured.

The property where the crash happened is partly owned by a former rich lister family.

A ten-year-old boy was killed and his father was critically injured in an ATV crash on a rural property co-owned by a well-known equestrian family.

The crash on French Pass Rd, Karapiro, was reported to police at 2.30pm on Sunday.

A 10-year-old boy was killed and his father was critically injured according to Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Dennis Hunt.

Hunt said the boy’s brother and a friend had also suffered serious and minor injuries in the crash which happened in a remote part of the property.

He said he believed the group had been hunting when the six seater side-by-side ATV rolled. He said the injured were airlifted by helicopter.

“It was a hectic time out there,” he said. “It was quite remote and we couldn’t get a 4WD to it. We have to be taken there by the neighbours."

Hunt said he didn’t believe the party were wearing helmets.

The Auckland Westpac Helicopter was sent to the scene and assisted a man in his 40's who needed to be “winched out from a height of 40ft”, according to a spokesperson.

He was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

The property is owned by Shaw’s Property Holdings Limited whose directors include Jonathon and Nelson Schick and Samuel Linder.

Nelson Shick, his wife Sue and son Rodney own Windsor Park Stud - a thoroughbred stud horse farm.

The parents were named on the National Business Review’s rich list in 2001, with an estimated worth of $25 million.

Last year Nelson Schick was awarded a life membership of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.

The Schick family declined to comment.

The property where the crash occurred was also the scene of another serious ATV crash in 2019 when Steven Curin of Curin Contractors suffered a brain injury.

Curin told Stuff it was human error that caused his crash, but did not want to talk further except to say the family involved was “tough” and would get through it.

Hunt also attended the 2019 crash and said it was in an “entirely different” part of the property to Sunday’s incident.

A spokesperson for WorkSafe said their initial enquiries determined the incident was recreational and not work-related.

“For that reason WorkSafe will not investigate and New Zealand Police is the lead agency,” the spokesperson said.
